The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the format for the 2027 ODI World Cup, which will include new “Super Series” and “Super 7” stages.

These concepts were approved at the ICC’s Annual General Meeting in Edinburgh last week.

2027 ODI World Cup to have “Super Series” and “Super 7” stages

The tournament will still have 14 teams, but, controversially the bottom three placed sides will play a round-robin “Super Series”. The winner will progress to the next round, also known as “Round 1”.

There, 12 teams will participate, split into two groups of six. However, there is a twist with the “Super 7” to feature the top three teams in each group plus the best fourth-placed team in either group. The Super 7 stage will feature 21 matches in a round-robin format, which likely means there will be at least two India-Pakistan matches during the tournament.

The top four teams will then qualify for the semi-finals. First place will take on fourth, while second meets third.

Fans disappointed with ODI World Cup 2027 format

“The changes were introduced to create more meaningful contests, elevate competitive standards, strengthen the competitive structure of both events, and enhance the tournament experience for athletes and fans,” read the ICC’s news release.

However, fans on social media aren’t particularly impressed as the governing body will again limit the opportunities of associate nations.

“Trust the ICC to shrink and marginalise the World Cup. What an insult to anyone that they don’t believe will make big money. Reminds me of the old World T20 format of inviting nations to a qualifying round. So frustrating,” wrote one fan.

“This is very clearly a World Cup format designed to wring the easiest money from existing audiences before the well runs dry and the ODI format itself is binned, rather than one designed with any thought to broadening appeal or bringing in new fans,” wrote another.
