Rohit Sharma is likely captain Mumbai Indians (MI) for the 2027 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. That is according to a report in The Indian Express, who revealed that MI are seeking some stability after a tough few seasons.

MI won just four matches in IPL 2026. The franchise was reportedly keen to go back to Rohit as captain during the season, but opted not to. However, MI were always going to move on from Hardik Pandya as skipper, with the all-rounder now a chance of moving to Kolkata Knight Riders (KRR) or Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

But, if Hardik doesn’t get a move, he is reportedly willing to play under Rohit’s captaincy.

Rohit set to be captain of Mumbai Indians according to report

MI have had an overhaul in the coaching department. Mahela Jayawardene is no longer the head coach, with Kieron Pollard announced as his replacement. Bowling coaches Lasith Malinga and Paras Mhambrey have left the franchise, as has fielding coach Carl Hopkinson. Robin Uthappa has been named as batting coach with T. Dilip brought in as fielding coach.

With the changes, there is the belief MI needs an experienced captain to steer the ship. According to a source, Rohit put Tilak Varma’s name forward for the captaincy, but Varma is likely to be an option for the future rather than now.

“Rohit initially had suggested Tilak Varma’s name but the franchise has requested him to take over captaincy which he has now agreed. There were series of talks that had happened before him flying to New Zealand and Rohit’s suggestions were sought during appointment of new coaches as well,” a source told The Indian Express.

MI had come in for criticism when they replaced Rohit Sharma with Hardik Pandya as captain ahead of the 2024 season. The franchise has struggled for the most part since, finishing tenth, fourth and ninth in the past three seasons.
