Ajit Agarkar’s future as India’s chief selector is yet to be decided. The BCCI is reportedly looking at the change in position before his current extension ends in September 2026, according to a Dainik Jagran report.
It has further heightened the debate over leadership in the selection committee, with questions raised over Rohit Sharma’s reported retirement plans before the Lord’s ODI, plus the board’s lack of clarity in communication with two stalwarts like Virat & Rohit.
Agarkar’s first term as chief selector ended in June 2025. The BCCI extended his term by one year to allow them time to review the role before making a final decision, and major tournaments like the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup were also approaching.
Talks have begun among the board, but no official announcement has been made about who will lead the selection panel after September.
Agarkar took over as chief selector in July 2023 and has been part of one of the most successful periods for India in white-ball cricket. Under his selection committee, India reached four ICC white ball tournament finals and lifted three major trophies, winning the 2024 T20 World Cup, the 2025 Champions Trophy and the 2026 T20 World Cup.
Why VVS Laxman as Chief Selector?
Ex-India batter VVS Laxman has reportedly emerged as the front-runner if BCCI decides to appoint a new chief selector. Laxman is currently heading BCCI’s Centre of Excellence, where he is responsible for the development of young cricketers, coaching programmes, player education and sports science across various age groups.
Laxman has been closely involved in the board’s decisions on cricket in the last few years. Following Rahul Dravid’s exit in 2024, he was one of the names suggested for the role of India coach before Gautam Gambhir was appointed.
There was also talk of him becoming Test coach when the board considered separating the coaching roles, which didn’t eventuate. He was also interim coach during the recently concluded 2026 tour of Zimbabwe.
BCCI officials feel Laxman’s experience and stature in Indian cricket could make him a good fit for the role. He is also believed to be on better terms with senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
The BCCI is likely to discuss this topic in the upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM) in late September 2026 with coach Gautam Gambhir & captain Shubman Gill after the Sri Lanka Test Tour.
