As per an Indian Express report and CricBlog’s verified sources, the third and final ODI between India and England at Lord’s on July 19 could be the end of Rohit Sharma’s international career. If it is the case, it will be his last appearance in India colours after a glorious 20-year journey.
The senior selection committee believed to have informed its decision to move on from the veteran opener after the ongoing England series.
Sources suggest that Sharma had a conversation with the selection committee last week during the pre-ODI series preparations in Birmingham. It is also understood that head coach Gautam Gambhir was part of the discussions as the long term plans for the ODI format were assessed, keeping in mind that India have a World Cup in Southern Africa next year.
Rohit Sharma to retire? Selectors are looking to give Yashasvi Jaiswal his deserved run
CricBlog, through its dressing room sources in the Indian team, has learned that selectors are keen to hand opportunities to younger players as the roadmap for the 2027 ODI World Cup takes shape. Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has been waiting in the wings for a chance in the 50-over format, is one of the players being thought of for a bigger role in the Indian ODI setup.
Jaiswal provides the advantage of a left-right hand combination at the top. This is one factor that drives head coach Gautam Gambhir’s team combinations on a regular basis.
As a result, Rohit’s future is now believed to be at a crossroads with the selection committee reportedly not seeing a place for Sharma in India’s plans due to his indifferent form in the past three ODI series against New Zealand, Afghanistan and now England.
Selectors and the team management have reportedly conveyed him to retire on his own terms. Otherwise, Rohit will be dropped in the series against the West Indies team at home in September later this year.
Sharma has been a white ball colossus in Indian cricket over the last two decades, but with selectors now believed to be looking at the next generation and building a squad for the 2027 World Cup, a transition in the one-day team is believed to be here and will be initiated after Rohit Sharma’s possible swansong at Lord’s on 19th July.
