Shikhar Dhawan has backed Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to play a key role for India in the 2027 ODI World Cup. The former India opener feels that the two experienced batters still have a lot to offer the team and can help India nimbly navigate to the World title next year in South Africa.
Dhawan made these remarks at the launch of the first-of-its-kind STEM lab set up by his foundation in Delhi. Questions have been raised about Rohit and Kohli’s age and their ability to participate in the 2027 World Cup. But both have continued to do well and keep silencing those doubts with their batting.
India’s two senior batters had a good series outing against England in July, even though the three-match ODI series ended 2-1 in England’s favoru. Kohli scored two fifties in the series, while Rohit scored a brilliant century at Lord’s.

Shikhar Dhawan: Virat and Rohit are legends
At the event, Dhawan was asked about Rohit’s and Virat’s future.
“They are legends. They have performed for the country for so many years. Whether it’s Virat or Rohit, all of us have had a relationship since we were around 16 years old. They are two to three years younger than me, and it is a matter of great joy that they are preparing for the 2027 WC now,” he said.
“Rohit’s latest performance at Lord’s has shown that he can perform well when the team is struggling in the series against England. The opener’s hundred was a statement of his technical and mental might in a tough period for the Indian batting line-up.
“Rohit recently scored a hundred at Lord’s. It was a wonderful century and showed how his bat speaks. He has been doing that for so many years, and when a difficult phase came, he responded in the best possible way with his performances.”
When asked about his former teammate from West Delhi Cricket academy, Virat Kohli, Shikhar Dhawan praised him for his immaculately clean consistency & fitness levels in all formats over the years: “As for Virat, no amount of praise is enough. The way he keeps himself so fit and continues to perform at the highest level is remarkable,” he said.
