He came to Lord’s not just with a bat but with a truckload of courage and determination as well. He endured the questions, the pressure, the noise of what was to come. By the time Rohit Sharma walked out to bat on Sunday, many had already assumed it could be the end of the road.
The story was all over the map. Could he still do that? Could Rohit Sharma handle the pressure of a game where every run was seen as a comment on his future?
And then Rohit responded with a first century by any Indian in an ODI at Lord’s. Every shot off his blade made the voices of doubts a past with his name on the honors board forever in the future.
Rohit Sharma hits a special hundred at Lord’s
It wasn’t the easiest knock of his career. It wasn’t the most fluent hundred he had ever scored. There were times when the old certainty was gone and times when he felt the pressure in every movement.
But that was precisely what made it special.
This was Rohit Sharma, one of the greatest white ball batters of all time, in the middle of one of cricket’s most famous grounds with his future being discussed all around him. England were the opposition. There was tremendous pressure. The pace of Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue was there to be exploited. Every mistake would be remembered.
The same question was coming back every dot ball… can he still overcome the pressure?
Stop Me If You Can, Ego of a Lion
For a while the answer was not clear. Then Rohit settled into his groove. The pull shots began. Then came the hook. The shots that defined his white ball career began to return slowly. The timing was cleaner and confidence grew and the pressure started to come off him.
This was not a player trying to impress a selector. This was a guy trying to prove something to himself. A hundred came with a boundary and the whole meaning of the innings was transformed. We will remember the number 100 but the manner in which it was scored is just as important.
But the selectors still have a choice to make. The BCCI can always say the team has to move forward. Management can still have their own ideas of the future. But that did not matter today.
There was only Rohit Sharma, his bat and the 22 yards at Lord’s. He had been ready for this. He had been ready, even with the doubts. He’d still thought he could do something. And today that belief paid off.
This was a hundred that wore defiance without needing to shout. A hundred who said he was done just because people decided he was. A hundred said that the decision about the future could be made by others, but the answer on the field had to be respected.
2027 World Cup still in the air. There are no guarantees. Nothing has been decided. But Rohit Sharma has done what he can do. He has faced the questions, coped with the pressure and answered with the bat and gave us his 34th ODI ton.
