Cricket News: Sydney weather forecast for AUS vs NZ T20 World Cup match | SCG weather forecast for Australia vs New Zealand

Do you want the good news first or the bad news? It’s common practice to start with the bad. According to Australian Bureau of Meteorology, there is a 90% chance of rain in Sydney on Saturday; the day Australia’s T20 World Cup title defence is set to begin against New Zealand. The good news is that just 3-6mm is predicted to fall, so there may be a result.

Sydney weather could play spoilsport with full crowd expected

After a magnificent first round, where Sri Lanka, Netherlands, Ireland and Zimbabwe qualified to the Super 12s, the stage is set for a terrific start to the main round. Australia, who have a great record at home across formats against New Zealand, are meant to play in front a full crowd with the match officially a sell out.

However, whether all the fans turn up remains to be seen. Rain is almost certain to play a factor, but there is reason to be hopeful. While there is a very high (95%) chance of showers (and even a storm) in the afternoon and evening, the expected amount of 3-6mm for the entire day suggests there may be enough breaks in the weather to allow for a shortened match at the least, especially given the SCG is one of the best drainage grounds in the world.

Also, according to AccuWeather’s hourly forecast, precipitation levels are only between 28 and 50% between the 6pm start time and expected 9:30pm finish.

The likelihood of rain is another frustrating chapter in the story that is cricket in Sydney. The heavens often open at the sight of international cricket, with the New Year’s Test often affected in some capacity. However, should the rain stay away long enough on Saturday evening, this crucial Group 1 match can end with a result, like Australia’s women’s team achieved in what looked to be more dire circumstances in 2020.

The match is scheduled to begin at 6pm local time, with England then taking on Afghanistan in brighter Perth.
