Cricket News: Twitter reactions as Australia DESTROY England: Scott Boland 6/7 | Reactions to England 68 all-out as Australia retain Ashes
Did your Tuesday involve sitting back and enjoying Ashes cricket? Maybe enjoy a nice lunch and a beverage or two?
Instead, you’d need to focus on perhaps fixing something around the house that’s been on the to-do list for a while. Or work on the garden. Maybe watch a movie or two.
In a Test match which saw the lowest number of deliveries bowled to achieve a result in Australia for 70 years (1,084), it was Scott Boland who shone brightest on a dark day for England as the debutant took 6/7 to consign England to an embarrassing 68 all-out. Marcus Harris, who was under pressure heading into the Test, outscored England’s second innings effort by himself in the first innings (760, as Joe Root’s team looked all at sea once again.
But what a day out for Boland. In front of his home crowd, Boland had the ball and English batsmen on a string, with a wicket looking likely to fall on each delivery he bowled. He achieved his first five-wicket haul in 19 deliveries, more than justifying the Australian selectors’ decision to pick him for the match.
England’s capitulation was reflective of the series to date. And it started from the very first ball of the Ashes itself. Apart from a couple of good sessions here and there, England haven’t had a sniff of winning, losing all three Tests by huge margins. It is surely cause for significant repercussions, as all the talk over the past 18 months in particular was how they were preparing hard for this series.
In the end, if any professional worth their soul produces such results after immense ‘preparation’, they’d be fired. Heads must and will roll. It has a 2015 ODI World Cup feel about it, so it will be interesting to see how England respond to such a disgraceful performance.
Australia vs England Boxing Day Test capitulation: the key stats
