Cricket News: Twitter reactions as Ross Taylor announces retirement | New Zealand great Ross Taylor announces retirement
Ross Taylor, one of New Zealand’s greatest ever players, has announced that he will be retiring during the Black Caps’ home season.
Taylor took to Twitter to announce the news. The upcoming two-Test series against Bangladesh will be his last in the whites for New Zealand, before signing off in the ODIs against Australia and The Netherlands later in the season.
“Today I’m announcing my retirement from international cricket at the conclusion of the home summer, two more tests against Bangladesh, and six odi’s against Australia & the Netherlands,” wrote Taylor on his official Twitter account.
“Thank you for 17 years of incredible support. It’s been an honour to represent my country #234“
Taylor’s international career will span just on 16 years after making his ODI debut vs West Indies way back in 2006. He has gone on to score 8,581 ODI runs at a superb average of 48.20, along with 7,584 Test runs at 44.87 and 1,909 T20I runs at 26.15.
In fact, he is New Zealand’s highest-ever run-scorer in both Tests and ODIs – a feat that no doubt has him as one of the true greats of New Zealand cricket.
Ross Taylor retires: Twitter reactions
Taylor had a magnificent career, and the reactions are fitting of that. Former West Indian cricketer and current commentator Ian Bishop took to Twitter to congratulate New Zealand’s leading run-scorer.
“Can’t say that I knew Ross Taylor to any great extent. But the few times I spent in his presence conversing with him, I came away thinking, ‘what a lovely and decent person he is’. Finish strong Rosco,” tweeted Bishop.
Current New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson also praised Taylor, speaking about how special it was to win the World Test Championship alongside him.
“Ross Taylor is a world class player, our best with bat over a long period – it was a pleasure to involve in many partnerships – the World Test Championship final was really special for us,” said Williamson.
