Cricket News: Twitter reactions as Shami, Bumrah lead India to win in Centurion | India win their first Test in Centurion: Twitter reactions
In the past, producing a lively pitch would almost guarantee a win against India. Now, producing such a pitch is a big risk, which is testament to the rise of India’s pace bowling stocks.
The magnificent Jasprit Bumrah and ever-reliable Mohammed Shami backed up KL Rahul’s masterful century to lead India to a 113-run win; their first ever victory in Centurion. It is another episode in what has been a brilliant 12 months for India, notching up their fifth win in nine away games to Australia, England and South Africa since last year’s Boxing Day Test at the MCG.
It is quite the recovery after the 36-all out abomination a little over a year ago. Rahul and co. led the way with the bat, while the bowlers never let up throughout the Test. Shami was outstanding, taking eight wickets in total, while Bumrah overcame an injury scare to produce a second innings masterclass.
Indeed, the delivery to Rassie van der Dussen is one that will be etched in the memory of many Indians for years to come.
In the process, India became the first Asian team – and just third overall – to win a Test in Centurion. For South Africa, there is quite a bit of thinking to do ahead of the second Test at Johannesburg on January 3. Kagiso Rabada will be better for the run, but more is required of their batsmen especially as Quinton de Kock will be unavailable for the remainder of the series. Dean Elgar showed his usual gritty character, but more is needed from the others.
With South Africa’s lack of cricket in recent times and key players missing, India had to look at this series as their best chance to win their first Test assignment in South Africa. And they have made the perfect start. Here are some of the Twitter reactions:
