Exclusive: Bangladesh bowling coach Allan Donald on Angelo Mathews timed out dismissal

CricBlog has gained exclusive audio of Allan Donald sharing his thoughts on the Angelo Mathews timed out dismissal

Bangladesh bowling coach Allan Donald has shared his thoughts on the Angelo Mathews timed out dismissal, which dominated headlines around the cricketing world during and after Bangladesh’s victory over Sri Lanka at Delhi on November 7.

Mathews, who walked in to bat with Sri Lanka four down in the 25th over, was all but ready to face his first delivery before his helmet strap broke. After calling for a new helmet, Bangladesh appealed for a timed out dismissal, with captain Shakib Al Hasan choosing to uphold the appeal twice when prompted by the umpires.

In the end, Mathews was given out, sparking widespread reaction. CricBlog has gained exclusive access to the reaction of Donald, who was seen talking to Mathews just after the Sri Lankan was dismissed.

Below is the transcript of the interview.

Allan Donald interview: “I wanted to go out there and say ‘enough is enough'”

“I think it [the timed out dismissal] really overshadowed a clinical performance by Bangladesh. I’m sort of a bit still shocked about it to be honest. It’s just my values that I have as a person and as a cricketer.

I certainly have never, ever in my entire life since I was playing cricket at age group, club cricket, provincial cricket, international cricket… never, ever, ever have seen anything like that.

Last night I sat in bed and I just thought ‘what just took place there?’ For me, the question I asked was ‘what just happened there?’ I even sat in the changeroom and I was dead quiet. We didn’t shake hands [with Sri Lanka], and you walk on the field, and I knew what was going to come after Sri Lanka had fielded… it was just going to be a very, very blank reception and that it certainly was.”

Donald’s immediate reaction…

“My immediate reaction when that happened – and this is just my instincts would have taken over – is I almost actually thought of going on that field and saying ‘enough is enough, we don’t stand for this. We are not that kind of team who stand for this.’

That was my immediate thought. Things happen so quickly, but you’re talking about authority and I’m not the head coach, I’m not in charge. I just saw Marais Erasmus say ‘please, Angelo you can now depart the ground.’ And, seeing Angelo pick his helmet up and then walking off and throwing it against the advertising boards; it just was…. I was surprised.”

“I just don’t want to see things like that…”

“You talk about the respect and the dignity for each other and for the game. The spirit of the game. I just don’t want to see things like that. That’s just me. I just don’t want to see that sort of thing in our game where, OK someone was sharp out there and said ‘well, you can appeal.’ I was like ‘really? This is not going to happen. This cannot be happening. This can’t be happening!’

But we saw it. I don’t know, mate, my instincts would have immediately told me get out there and say ‘hey, that’s just not going to happen. It’s just not going to happen.'”

Overshadowed a great Bangladesh win…

“It really overshadowed a great win. It absolutely; not really, it absolutely overshadowed everything because there was a lot of niggle out there; there was a huge amount of niggle when Sri Lanka started bowling.

There was anger. The only word you can use, really, is anger. At the end of the day, then like I normally do, I’m almost out there on the park first shaking hands and I just knew that these guys were heading for one place and that’s the dressing room. There was no eye contact at all, no conversations, nothing.

I don’t know, a lot of these cricketers today can call me old fashioned but I just don’t think there is any place for it. I just don’t think so.”

Allan Donald recalls Shoriful Islam replacing his boots in a Test match vs Ireland…

“And you talk about mankad now. If you’re going to mankad, it’s a rule, and we’re talking about two rules here that’s actually in the game. The most sensible thing would have been to just to say ‘OK, no worries mate, sort your helmet out quickly. You have time to replace it.’

I take an incident that happened to Shoriful Islam where he came out in the wrong shoes against Ireland in a Test match. He had green boots on with whites, and it took him time to take those boots off; well over time, well over. Talking about exactly the same incident and nothing was said. Nothing. Not a thing. Not a word.”

On running out the non-striker…

“We’re talking about mankading people, and for me, if you’re going to mankad someone, it’s a rule, it’s out there… You need to warn the batsman if you’re going to mankad him. “Don’t do that, don’t steal ground”… that’s sort of thing.

It [the timed out] was disappointing to see. I can understand Shakib taking his chance. His words were ‘I was doing everything to win’. You can sense in my voice that I don’t like it… I don’t like that sort of thing. It was really difficult to watch that unfold… one of Sri Lanka’s all-time greats walking off the field without a ball bowled to him been given out for time.

That’s where I stand on that.”

Reactions to Angelo Mathews getting timed out by Shakib & Bangladesh

Cricket News: Reactions to Angelo Mathews getting timed out by Shakib & Bangladesh | Fans react on Twitter to Angelo Mathews becoming the first player to be timed out in internationals

Bangladesh vs. Sri Lanka is one of world cricket’s most thrilling rivalries. Drama often ensues when these two teams meet, and it was the case again in their World Cup clash at Delhi.

The clash, which only had bearings on qualification for the 2025 Champions Trophy, sprung into life in the 25th over. Angelo Mathews, who walked to the crease after the dismissal of Sadeera Samarawickrama, was all but ready to face up until his helmet strap broke. Mathews then signaled to the dressing room for a replacement helmet, afterwhich Shakib Al Hasan appealed to the umpires for a timed out dismissal after the two-minute time limit had elapsed.

According to Ian Bishop, the umpires approached Shakib twice and asked him if he wanted to withdraw his appeal. The Bangladesh captain refused. Marais Erasmus then confirmed to Mathews that he was out, marking the first-ever timed out dismissal in international cricket.

40.1 and 40.2 explains the rule, which does not cater for equipment malfunction.

40.1.1 “After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 2 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out.”

40.1.2 “In the event of an extended delay in which no batter comes to the wicket, the umpires shall adopt the procedure of Law 16.3 (Umpires awarding a match). For the purposes of that Law the start of the action shall be taken as the expiry of the 3 minutes referred to above.

40.2 Bowler does not get credit The bowler does not get credit for the wicket.”

However, the incident sparked significant reaction on social media, with criticism aimed at Shakib for choosing to uphold his appeal rather than show sportsmanship.

Reactions to Angelo Mathews timed out against Shakib – against the spirit or fair play?

Criticism of Shakib:

Fans, pundits and former players had their say on Twitter. Many believe that Shakib’s actions were uncalled for given Mathews was not deliberately trying to waste time, but wanted to sort out his safety equipment.

In support of Shakib:

There were also arguments for Shakib, with those in support claiming that what he did was within the rules. Also, there are views that Mathews should have been more diligent.

Sri Lanka, courtesy of a brilliant Charith Asalanka century, ended up with 279 after falling into trouble at 135/5. Bangladesh entered their chase having scored 250 just once previously in the 2023 World Cup.

Will Glenn Maxwell play against Afghanistan?

Star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is expected to return for Australia’s showdown with high-flying Afghanistan at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on November 7.

Maxwell missed Australia’s crucial 33-run win over arch-rivals England on Saturday after suffering a concussion in a golf cart incident last Monday (30 October). The Afghanistan game comes eight days after the all-rounder suffered the injury, which is said to pass the necessary protocol for a return.

“I think they (Maxwell and Marsh) are straight back in. We’re so excited to get Mitch back and then Maxi, I think it’s an eight-day protocol (that ends) on the day (of the Afghanistan match) so I think he’s all good to go,” said fellow all-rounder Cameron Green following Australia’s fifth-straight win in the World Cup.

Glenn Maxwell likely to play against Afghanistan, Mitchell Marsh also available, Steve Smith suffering from vertigo

According to cricket.com.au, Maxwell batted for nearly an hour in the nets and engaged in running drills on Friday night. The training formed part of an important process implemented to ensure the all-rounder was managed properly following the injury.

Last Thursday (November 2), Cricbuzz correspondent Bharat Sundaresan said that Maxwell was jogging with the team. “Glenn Maxwell having a bit of a jog around with the rest of the team under the close supervision of the physio is a promising sign as he recovers from the concussion suffered on Monday,” he tweeted.

Mitchell Marsh, who also missed the England game, is available for the Afghanistan clash after joining up with squad on Sunday evening. He travelled back to Australia following the passing of his grandfather, Ross.

As a result, Australia could have their full squad to choose from for the first time in this tournament. But, reports came through on Monday afternoon that Steve Smith has been suffering from vertigo, which could put him in doubt for the Afghanistan clash.

If Smith is out and Australia select both Marsh and Maxwell, one of Marnus Labuschagne or Cameron Green will likely miss out. Labuschagne is fresh off an important 71 against England, which lifted him to Australia’s second-highest run-scorer in this tournament.

Pat Cummins’ team will have to be on their game against an Afghanistan side that has won its past three matches. Hashmatullah Shahidi’s team is playing with great confidence, and will back themselves to test Australia with their spinners. If they win, they will move level with Australia on points.

Australia’s possible XI vs Afghanistan (if Steve Smith does not play): 1. Travis Head, 2. David Warner, 3. Mitchell Marsh, 4. Marnus Labuschagne, 5. Josh Inglis (wk), 6. Glenn Maxwell, 7. Marcus Stoinis, 8. Pat Cummins (c), 9. Mitchell Starc, 10. Adam Zampa, 11. Josh Hazlewood

Twitter reactions to Virat Kohli’s 49th ODI century – goes level with Sachin Tendulkar

The great Virat Kohli has added another string to his bow, notching up his 49th ODI century on his 35th birthday to go level with Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar. With India gunning for their eighth-straight win in the 2023 ODI World Cup, Kohli took control and achieved the feat in just his 277th innings, an incredible 174 fewer than Tendulkar, who took 451 innings to reach the mark.

A capacity crowd at Eden Gardens, and hundreds of millions watching online and on television celebrated yet another Kohli hundred. After a superb early onslught by Rohit Sharma against the South Africa fast bowlers, Virat settled in and held the Indian innings together on a challenging Kolkata pitch. On a surface that offered turn and inconsistent pace, Kohli rotated strike magnificently, partnering with Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja to help take India to a formidable 326/5.

The knock was also testament to Kohli’s supreme fitness. Conditions have been sapping and unforgiving throughout this World Cup, with testing heat and humidity across the country. However, Virat never let up, finishing with just ten fours in his 101 with the rest in singles and twos.

Reactions to Virat Kohli’s 49th ODI century: Star number 3 leads the way as India thump high-flying South Africa

From there, India never let up. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj kept things tight early, with the latter getting the key wicket of Quinton de Kock. Mohammed Shami, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja took over, with the left-arm spinner finishing with superb figures of 5/33 as the Proteas had absolutely no respite against a relentless attack.

The defeat raises further questions around South Africa’s ability to chase totals. As they dominate teams when batting first, the Proteas have lost two matches when batting second (against Netherlands and India) and scraped home by one wicket against Pakistan.

“Well played Virat. It took me 365 days to go from 49 to 50 earlier this year. I hope you go from 49 to 50 and break my record in the next few days. Congratulations!!” tweeted cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar.

https://twitter.com/on_drive23/status/1721179773961908442

India marked another day of dominance with a superb 243-run win over South Africa. Their final group game is against the Netherlands at Bengaluru. South Africa will go up against high-flying Afghanistan at Ahmedabad before the semi-finals.

IND vs SL Twitter Reactions – Siraj, Shami, Bumrah bowl Sri Lanka out for 55

Cricket News: IND vs SL Twitter Reactions – Siraj, Shami, Bumrah bowl Sri Lanka out for 55 | Reactions to India’s massive 302-run win over Sri Lanka at Mumbai

India have once again made a mockery of Sri Lanka, bowling them out for under 100 for the third time in the past four meetings. Mohammed Siraj, just as he did in the recent Asia Cup Final, destroyed the Sri Lankan top order to have figures of 3/0 off 1.5 overs at one stage, after Jasprit Bumrah dismissed the in-form Pathum Nissanka LBW first ball off a delivery that is almost impossible to play.

But, the beauty of the Indian attack is that there is no breathing room. After the early Siraj and Bumrah onslaught, in came Mohammed Shami. The man of the match went on a rampage, dismissing Charith Asalanka and Dushan Hemantha in his first over to reduce Sri Lanka to a scarcely believable 14/6 after ten overs. From there, he dismissed Dushmantha Chameera, Angelo Mathews and Kasun Rajitha to finish with 5/18 and become India’s all-time highest wicket-taker in ODI World Cups.

It was truly an exhibition from India’s pace-bowling brigade. On a surface offering movement and a touch of inconsistent pace, the fast bowlers did not let up, with the Sri Lankans simply having no answers as a wicket looked likely each and every delivery. At one stage, the lowest ever ODI score of 35 was under threat as the Lions fell to the depths of 29/8, but the efforts of Kasun Rajitha (14) and Maheesh Theekshana (12*) gave Sri Lanka their only consolation on a wretched day.

Key stats from the rout:

  • Mohammed Shami became India’s leading wicket-taker in World Cups with 45. He has achieved the feat in just 14 innings.
  • Sri Lanka’s top five contributed just two runs. This is the lowest of any team in ODI history.
  • The 302-run win is India’s second-biggest ever in ODIs. The biggest ever is 317, also by India against Sri Lanka earlier this year.
  • India have bowled Sri Lanka out for 73, 50 and 55 in three of their past four ODIs. The Lions scored 172 on the other occasion.

IND vs SL Reactions: India destroy Sri Lanka by 302 runs at Wankhede

We must also not forget India’s solid batting performance, where they struck an imposing 357/8 on a surface that was somewhat tricky for batting. Shubman Gill (92), Virat Kohli (88) and Shreyas Iyer (82) all struck half-centuries. Here are some reactions India’s massive victory; their seventh-straight in a perfect World Cup campaign so far.

“Don’t worry about tomorrow. Cherish the Team India that you have today. You may never see such domination again,” tweeted Sportskeeda’s Anuj Nitin Prabhu.

“For decades if batters in India were the headline act fast bowlers were the accompaniment tracks more often than not. What Bumrah, Shami and Siraj have done is turned fast bowling into the special attraction band, one that seems to churn out platinum albums for fun,” tweeted Cricbuzz’s Bharat Sundaresan.

NED vs AFG Dream11 Prediction Fantasy Cricket Tips Possible XI Pitch Report: ODI World Cup 2023 Match 34 | Lucknow Pitch Report

Players from both the Netherlands and Afghanistan camps will both have some amazing stories to share in the future about this World Cup. But, they won’t want the good times to end just yet. They meet in a tantalising clash at Lucknow in match 34 of this World Cup; a match that has big ramifications on the semi-final spots.

The Afghans, if they win today, will go level on points with Australia and New Zealand. The consensus throughout this World Cup by some parts of the media is that there hasn’t been a surprise element or story in this tournament, but stand up now if you had Afghanistan level with Australia and New Zealand by November 3. They have been outstanding, adding another string to their bow by chasing targets superbly against fellow Asian teams Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

But, the Netherlands won’t die wondering. They have shown both South Africa and Bangladesh that they can be dynamite when defending a total. With Scott Edwards batting and captaining the side well, you can be sure the Dutch won’t lie down with their semi-final hopes still alive. However, they need more from their indifferent top order.

ODI World Cup 2023 Match 34: NED vs AFG Possible Playing XIs

Roelof van der Merwe, who missed the Bangladesh game due to illness, could return for this game.

Netherlands: 1. Vikramjit Singh, 2. Max O’Dowd, 3. Wesley Barresi, 4. Colin Ackermann, 5. Scott Edwards (c & wk), 6. Bas de Leede, 7. Sybrand Engelbrecht, 8. Logan van Beek, 9. Shariz Ahmad/Roelof van der Merwe, 10. Aryan Dutt, 11. Paul van Meekeren

There is the possibility of Afghanistan playing four spinners at Lucknow. They went with that approach at Chennai against Pakistan.

Also, Ikram Alikhil dislocated his finger against Sri Lanka, so Najibullah Zadran may come in his place with Rahmanullah Gurbaz to take the gloves.

Afghanistan: 1. Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), 2. Ibrahim Zadran, 3. Rahmat Shah, 4. Hashmatullah Shahidi (c), 5. Azmatullah Omarzai, 6. Najibullah Zadran, 7. Mohammad Nabi, 8. Rashid Khan, 9. Mujeeb Ur Rahman, 10. Naveen-ul-Haq/Noor Ahmad, 11. Fazalhaq Farooqi

NED vs AFG Dream11 Prediction: Fantasy Cricket Tips

Netherlands:

  • Since the start of 2022, Scott Edwards has scored 1,261 runs at an average of 46.7 and strike rate of 94.7 in ODIs. This includes three half-centuries in as many matches against Afghanistan (208 runs, avg. 69.33).
  • Edwards will have a key role to play against Rashid Khan. He has scored 40 runs off 54 balls without dismissal.
  • Bas de Leede may be expensive in this World Cup, but he is a genuine wicket-taker. He has picked up 11 wickets in this tournament, part of 26 scalps in 2023. But, the Netherlands need runs from their star all-rounder, who averages just 19 in this campaign.
  • Paul van Meekeren put on a clinic against the Bangladeshis. He took 4/23 in the big win for the Dutch.
  • Aryan Dutt has a key role to play on a pitch that can provide turn. The offspinner has taken eight wickets in six matches in this World Cup at an impressive economy of 4.96.

Afghanistan:

  • Rahmanullah Gurbaz will be looking to bounce back after his duck against Sri Lanka. He was enjoying a good run of form before the last game, hitting 224 runs in five matches.
  • Gurbaz scored a century in January 2022 against the Netherlands. He hit 103 (127) on a slow pitch at Doha.
  • Rahmat Shah has found his form. The experienced right-hander has struck two straight half-centuries to help guide Afghanistan to wins. He also has a half-century in three matches vs Netherlands.
  • Azmatullah Omarzai is a good pick for fantasy teams. The supremely talented all-rounder has taken five wickets in this World Cup along with 203 runs. His last innings was a superb 63-ball 73* against Sri Lanka.
  • Mujeeb Ur Rahman has taken seven wickets in three matches against the Netherlands. He can be a handful for the Dutch with his variations. Same with Rashid Khan, who has six wickets in three matches against the Dutch.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Afghanistan beat Netherlands 3-0 in Qatar in January 2022. The Afghans won all three matches batting first, hitting 222, 237 and 254.
  • Hashmatullah Shahidi has scored two half-centuries in three ODIs against Netherlands. He is also Afghanistan’s leading run-scorer in this World Cup with 226.
  • Is a big score awaiting Ibrahim Zadran? The opener has made scores of 22, 22, 28, 14, 87, and 39 in his last six innings.
  • Max O’Dowd is having a horror run in this World Cup, hitting just 61 runs in six innings.
  • Logan van Beek has taken a wicket every 29.22 deliveries in this tournament.

Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow Pitch Report and Weather

The Lucknow track was very tricky for batting in the recent India-England clash. The seamers found movement and Kuldeep Yadav spun the ball significantly.

In four matches in this World Cup, the average first innings score is 252.75. Both the team batting first and second have won two games each. But, with spin available, setting a total may be the way to go.

A warm and mostly clear day is forecast with a top of about 31 degrees.

Australia possible playing XI vs England: Glenn Maxwell OUT, will Stoinis play?

Cricket News: Australia possible playing XI vs England: Glenn Maxwell OUT, will Stoinis play? | Australia’s possible playing XI vs England at Ahmedabad

In a major blow for Australia, superstar all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has been ruled out for at least the England game after suffering a concussion in a golf-related incident. Maxwell reportedly fell out of a golf cart earlier this week, which leaves a considerable hole in Australia’s lineup given how much they rely on his all-round ability.

In further news, Mitchell Marsh has also been ruled out of the England game at least as he has left India for personal reasons. His return date is unclear at this stage,. Marcus Stoinis’ impending return does provide Australia with a boost, but the team needs significantly better returns with the bat from the all-rounder given he hasn’t hit a 50+ score since the 2019 World Cup. But, there is arguably no better time than a match against the old enemy to achieve it.

Australia’s possible XI for England match at Ahmedabad: 1. David Warner, 2. Travis Head, 3. Steve Smith, 4. Marnus Labuschagne, 5. Cameron Green, 6. Marcus Stoinis, 7. Josh Inglis (wk), 8. Pat Cummins (c), 9. Mitchell Starc, 10. Adam Zampa, 11. Josh Hazlewood

Australia with questions vs England: Both Stoinis and Green set to play?

Australia had questions to answer even before the Maxwell drama. Their batting in the middle overs in this World Cup has left plenty to be desired. This was especially the case against New Zealand at Dharamsala after Travis Head and David Warner blasted a magnificent 175 in 19.1 overs.

Mitchell Marsh in particular has found it tough to get going against spin in the middle overs. Marsh has faced 111 deliveries against spin between overs 11 and 40 in this World Cup, hitting just 72 runs at a strike rate of 64.9. But, his departure from India means Steve Smith will bat at three for the England match.

Batting coach Michael di Venuto said all-rounder Marcus Stoinis “should be right” for the England match. He and Cameron Green are likely to replace Maxwell and Marsh given both offer the possibility of runs.

In terms of Maxwell, it is unclear when he will return. After England, Australia will take on confident Afghanistan at the Wankhede on Tuesday, which may be too soon for the all-rounder. Then, Pat Cummins’ team will meet struggling Bangladesh at Pune on November 11; the game in which Maxwell may make his comeback.

Australia will miss Maxwell’s services. He has smashed 196 runs at a strike rate of 148.48, including the fastest ever Australian and World Cup ton in 40 balls. Importantly, Maxwell’s offspin has been mighty effective, conceding just 4.82 per over across Australia’s first six games.

Fans slam Bangladesh after another poor display at the 2023 World Cup

Cricket News: Fans slam Bangladesh after another poor display at the 2023 World Cup | Netherlands smash Bangladesh at Kolkata

Bangladesh came into the World Cup with a host of issues. Not only was their batting of great concern, but they burnt bridges with arguably their greatest ever batsman Tamim Iqbal, sparking a public back-and-forth where players and administrators were keen to throw each other under the bus.

Despite those concerns, there was hope the Tigers could put together a good showing. After all, the tournament is played in the subcontinent which should, in theory, suit their bowling attack and give their batsmen the confidence of familar conditions.

However, their performances have been nothing short of abject, losing five consecutive matches convincingly after a decent first up win over Afghanistan. Their latest effort was a horror show against the Netherlands at Eden Gardens, falling well short of the 230-run target set thanks to a fighting knock from captain Scott Edwards.

While the bowlers lacked the finishing touch to end the Netherlands innings earlier than it did, the batsmen looked clueless against a Dutch attack that enjoyed the conditions on offer. As Bangladesh fans streamed out of the stadium at the fall of Mahmudullah’s wicket, one can only wonder as to the vision and strategy that the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) have in place to ensure the team competes better in ICC events. The batting still relies on Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah and Shakib Al Hasan, with the latter so out of form and focus that the end of a glittering ODI career could sadly just be around the corner.

On the other side, the Netherlands deserve this triumph. Their response to a 309-run hammering at the hands of Australia is indicative of a team with excellent fighting spirit. Once they got a foothold in this game, there was no letting up as both the seamers and spinners kept the pressure on a Bangladeshi batting lineup that did not have the spirit or answers to counter. Paul van Meekeren led the way with 4/23, well supported by Bas de Leede (2/25) and Aryan Dutt, Logan van Beek and Colin Ackermann who all took a wicket each.

Reactions: Fans slam Bangladesh after another poor performance in the 2023 World Cup

“We should question Bangladesh’s Full Member Status and the non-Status of Netherlands,” one fan tweeted. “Bangladesh’s worst WC campaign since 2003. So much work undone,” tweeted another fan.

AUS vs NZ Twitter Reactions: Australia hold off Ravindra, Neesham to seal thrilling win

Cricket News: AUS vs NZ Twitter Reactions: Australia hold off Ravindra, Neesham to seal thrilling win | Reactions to Australia vs New Zealand classic at Dharamsala

Remember all the talk about the absence of close matches in this World Cup? Well, like London buses, two have come around in very quick succession.

Following on from the Pakistan-South Africa thriller, Australia and New Zealand delivered their own. And what a memorable game it was. From the blistering and scarcely believable start from Australia’s openers to Rachin Ravindra further enhancing his status as one of the game’s best young players, this Trans-Tasman clash just about had it all.

New Zealand kept pace right throughout an incredible chase, taking the game to the very last ball. Their play in the middle overs, courtesy of Ravindra in particular, outshone Australia’s, whose identity between overs 10 and 40 is still unknown. Mitchell Marsh believed it was the best time to prepare for the upcoming Pakistan Test series, leaving more for Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, and crucially, Glenn Maxwell, to do.

388 looked like plenty, but we live in a cricket world where such a total is not safe. Especially on a belter of a batting surface at Dharamsala. Mitchell Starc, another concern for Australia, looked off colour, but Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Adam Zampa all enjoyed enough good moments to ensure Starc had enough to defend, which he just managed to in one of the all-time finishes.

Ravindra, who became just the second player after Sachin Tendulkar to hit two ODI World Cup hundreds before turning 24, set things up for New Zealand with a superb 89-ball 116. Jimmy Neesham was the man to take the Black Caps home, but despite his own fine half-century, he fell agonisingly short. Credit should go to Pat Cummins who batted and bowled beautifully in the final ten overs, coupled with razor-like precision with his field placements under pressure.

AUS vs NZ Reactions: Travis Head stars as Australia hold off spirited New Zealand by just 5 runs

In the end, the day belonged to Travis Head who won man of the match for his breathtaking 109 off 67 balls. Coming back from a fractured hand injury, Head didn’t miss a beat, taking to the strong New Zealand attack as if they were park cricketers.

Here are some of the reactions to what was a thrilling encounter.
