Cricket News: Which USA stadiums will host T20 World Cup matches? | T20 World Cup 2024: New York locked in as a venue

New York, along with Dallas and Florida, have been confirmed as the USA venues for the 2024 T20 World Cup. A 34-000-seater pop-up stadium, located about 30 miles east of New York City, is set to host the India-Pakistan match according to Cricbuzz.

The tournament as a whole is another opportunity to grow the game in the country. The International Cricket Council (ICC) have long seen the USA as a market with great potential, and is a reason why they are co-hosting the tournament with West Indies.

“We’re delighted to announce the three USA venues that will host part of the biggest ICC Men’s T20 World Cup ever staged, with 20 teams competing for the trophy.” said ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice. “The USA is a strategically important market and these venues give us an excellent opportunity to make a statement in the world’s biggest sport market.”

“We explored a number of potential venue options in the country, and we were hugely encouraged by the enthusiasm the event generated amongst prospective hosts, reinforcing the growing awareness around cricket’s massive fanbase and its power to unite diverse communities.”

Eisenhower Park New York one of three USA stadiums for T20 World Cup

“We are very excited about the opportunity to use modular stadium technology to present world class cricket in a location that has not previously hosted an ICC global event giving USA cricket fans the chance to watch the world’s best on their doorstep,” Allardice said.

“This technology has been used at previous ICC events to increase venue capacity and it’s routinely used in other major sports around the world. In the USA, it will give us the opportunity to increase the size of the venues in both Dallas and Florida and create what is going to be a stunning venue in New York.”

Earlier this year, the ICC wished to construct a similar venue at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx. However, after resistance from locals and one of the cricket leagues based there, the ICC decided to move plans to Eisenhower Park after negotiations with Nassau County officials.

The 2024 T20 World Cup will kick off on June 4. It will be a 20-team tournament, highlighting T20’s potential to grow cricket worldwide.

The final will be played on June 30.

Bangladesh all-rounder Nasir Hossain has been charged with corruption relating to the 2020-21 edition of the Abu Dhabi T10 tournament. Hossain is one of eight people who have been charged by the ICC’s anti-corruption unit (ACU), all of whom are associated with the Pune Devils franchise.

  • Rizwan Javed and Saliya Saman (domestic players)

According to ESPNcricinfo, the ACU “disrupted” attempts by well-known corruptors to influence Devils’ players and management to influence matches. All eight have been charged with not reporting corrupt approaches plus failing to cooperate in the investigation.

Also, Sanghvi, one of the co-owners has been charged with “placing bets on the results, progress” of a match. Zaidi, Javed, Saman and Dhillon face charges of “being party to an attempt to fix, contrive or influence improperly matches or aspects of matches.”

Javed and Saman also face a separate charge of “offering a reward in exchange for that player engaging in”.

Nasir Hossain, who played his last of his 115 internationals for Bangladesh back in 2018, has been charged for not reporting receiving a gift worth more than US$750. This is mandatory under the ACU code.

All eight have two weeks to respond to the charges from Tuesday, 19 September.

Glenn Maxwell is set to miss the first ODI against India at least, a source close to CricBlog has confirmed. The news comes as further concern for Australia, who are battling numerous injury worries ahead of the World Cup.

Maxwell missed the recently-concluded tour of South Africa due to an ankle issue linked with the serious injury he suffered the night before the 2022 T20 World Cup Final.

“Glenn experienced a short-term flare of impingement-related pain in his left ankle, which is not uncommon in the rehabilitation journey after significant ankle fracture,” a CA spokesperson said earlier this month.

“He has returned to training this week and is preparing to be available for a role in the one-day series in India.”

However, Maxwell’s role in the series is not expected to be from the first game at Mohali as he continues his recovery.

Pat Cummins is also reportedly set to miss the start of the India series. The captain has been recovering from a wrist injury suffered in the final Ashes Test. He previously stated that he should be good to go for the India series, but he is expected to feature later.

The news is more promising for Steve Smith. Smith, who is also battling a wrist injury, said he feels “pretty normal” after getting a cortisone injection. He has been back in the nets and should feature in this series, which serves as vital game time ahead of the World Cup.

Mitchell Starc is another key player coming back from injury. He has been recovering from a groin injury, but will miss the first ODI.

The series kicks off at Mohali on Friday September 22. Indore will host the second ODI on Sunday September 24, followed by the third match at Rajkot on Wednesday September 27.

Mitchell Starc, who is recovering from a groin injury, will miss the first ODI.

Pat Cummins has recovered from a wrist injury and hopes to play all three games. Also, Steve Smith was back in the nets last week. He said he feels “pretty normal” after getting a cortisone injection in his wrist.

“I inside-edged a couple of balls in the nets the other day and my bat turned sharp, and I was like ‘oh, that was hurting before’ and it wasn’t hurting anymore,” Smith said to Nine at a promotional event in Sydney. “So that’s a real positive, and I feel as though I can play all my shots and there’s no pain at all.”

Selectors may look to give Marcus Stoinis some match time to recapture form in 50-over cricket. Since the start of 2021, he has scored 265 runs at an average of just 17.7 in ODIs. Also, how he starts against spin will be under the spotlight, so Australia could look at this series as a chance to regain some form.

The entire game lasted 21.3 overs; less than half of a single ODI innings. Mohammed Siraj was simply unstoppable, taking his powerplay proficiency to new heights. The Sri Lankans had no answer to Siraj, who completely destroyed the lineup as if it were a match between professionals and amateurs.

At one stage, Siraj had extraordinary figures of 6/7 as the hosts slumped to 33/7 before getting rolled for just 50. This included four wickets in the fourth over, where Sri Lanka were all but out of the contest at 12/5.

Siraj then put the icing on the cake with two magnificent deliveries to knock over Dasun Shanaka and Kusal Mendis.

“The guys were bowling quick, all three pacers [Bumrah, Siraj, Hardik] bent their back really well”, said skipper Rohit Sharma. “Siraj got it to bend more than the other two guys. Every day everyone can’t be a hero, you’ll find new heroes everyday and today was Siraj’s day.”

Sri Lanka’s 50 all-out is their second-lowest score in ODI history. Their 43 against South Africa in 2012 remains the lowest, but going past that mark is certainly no consolation, especially as India strolled past the target with a mammoth 269 balls to spare.
