Harry Brook – Melbourne Stars

After trying to pinch Rashid Khan from Adelaide Strikers, Melbourne Stars then landed Harry Brook as their first pick. The dynamic batsman is set to take the Stars to new heights in 2023/24, as he has made a huge impression not only in Test cricket, but T20 leagues around the globe.

In all T20s, Brook has hammered 2,970 runs at an average of 34.13 and superb strike rate of 150.22. He is the only player to have scored centuries in the IPL, PSL and The Hundred.

Tom Curran – Sydney Sixers

Alex Hales – Sydney Thunder

Hales, who recently retired from international cricket, boasts the most runs of any non-Australian in BBL history. Sydney Thunder will be thrilled to have the services of Hales once again, who has scored 1,747 runs for the franchise at an average of 35.65 and strike rate of 150.73.

Jamie Overton – Adelaide Strikers

Jamie Overton will join Adelaide Strikers’ promising brigade of fast bowlers. Also, Overton can provide plenty of batting value, which the Strikers will welcome after falling away badly last season. He smashed 202 runs at a strike rate of over 180 in the 2023 Hundred.

Sam Hain – Hobart Hurricanes

Sam Hain represents a good pickup for the Hurricanes. Hain performed admirably for Brisbane Heat last season, with an average of 45.25 in his nine matches.

Overall in T20 cricket, Hain has scored an impressive 3,605 runs at an average of 40.50 and strike rate of 134.81. Out of 118 innings, 27 have resulted in a 50+ score.

James Vince – Sydney Sixers

Vince has been a mainstay of the Sixers lineup in recent years. He is set to feature once again. The classy number three has hit 1,547 runs for the franchise at an average of 31.45 and strike rate of 131.48. He has enjoyed batting at the SCG, with 651 runs at 38.29/136.19.

Also, Vince enjoyed strong campaigns in both the Blast and Hundred competitions in the 2023 English summer.

Sam Billings – Brisbane Heat

Sam Billings is a solid pickup for the Heat. In 37 innings in the BBL, Billings has struck 1,014 runs at an average of 30.73 and strong strike rate of 141.62. He should provide value in the league stage before departing for the UAE ILT20.

Zak Crawley – Perth Scorchers

Zak Crawley came of age in the 2023 Ashes series. While he didn’t fire for Hobart Hurricanes last season, he has the ability to deliver the goods for the Scorchers who are in need of an opener of the departures of Cameron Bancroft, Faf du Plessis, Adam Lyth and Stephen Eskinazi.

Laurie Evans – Perth Scorchers

The talented middle-order batsman has been cleared to play for the moment, but his participation in this year’s BBL remains in the air given final judgement awaits regarding his doping case.

Paul Walter – Brisbane Heat

29-year old Paul Walter can provide all-round value to Brisbane Heat. Walter, who boasts 112 matches of T20 experience, has struck 1,551 runs at a strike rate of 143.87. Also, he has picked up 62 wickets at an average of 25.51 and economy of 8.89 with his left-arm seam.

Adam Hose – Adelaide Strikers

Adam Hose will return to the Strikers. The middle-order batsman was solid last season, with 312 runs. Also, he played well in the Blast earlier this year, with 397 runs at an average of nearly 40.

Rehan Ahmed – Sydney Sixers

Impressive young legspinner Rehan Ahmed is set to make the Sixers even stronger. He made an immediate impression in international cricket, taking seven wickets on Test debut in Pakistan. The 19-year old, who has played 42 T20s for 40 wickets at a respectable economy of 7.68, should enjoy conditions at the SCG.

While batting first, South Africa managed to post a below-par total of 164/8. Barring Temba Bavuma, Aiden Markram and Tristan Stubbs, no other batter could apply himself at the crease, as the innings never got the required momentum. While bowling, the Proteas bowlers looked toothless, as four of the six bowlers leaked runs at ten or more per over.

For Australia, most of the things went right again.   • Rassie van der Dussen has failed to play a long innings this series, something he is known for. However, Dussen is a quality player and can dismantle any bowling lineup on his day. He would need to be cautious against Jason Behrendorff early on.

  • Lungi Ngidi has been very expensive in the first two games. However, Ngidi had done fairly well at this venue before this series and can churn out a match-winning performance again. In ten innings, Ngidi has 15 wickets at a strike rate of 14.33 in T20s in Durban.
  • Tabraiz Shamsi has also performed poorly in this series thus far. He has 14 wickets at a strike rate of 21 in the T20s at this venue. A fine bowling performance might well be around the corner.

What do you think of England calling up Gus Atkinson to the squad?

I think it’s an outstanding call. I’ve seen quite a bit of him over the last year and a bit. He’s got genuine pace, good control, I think it’s a great opportunity for him.

I think he’s earned that opportunity. I’m really looking forward to watching him bowl when he gets the opportunity and hopefully he does. I saw one game where he bowled up to 94 or 95 mph, so he’s going to be quick and quicker than anyone at the minute and hopefully he does well. 

Do you think it’s easy for a young player to hit the ground running in such a big event?

It’s one of those things when it gets to that level you can find out if someone is able to play at that level. It might sound a bit obvious but some people take to it and some people struggle slightly.

I think he’ll be fine. He’s got that confidence around him, he plays at Surrey so he’s got a lot of experience around of him. Jason Roy and more who have been there at that top level so I have no doubt he’ll be fine. I think he’ll hit the ground running and do well. 

Do you think pace will be key in India [in the WC]?

I think pace will definitely help. The wickets will be completely different. The ball will reverse out there, I used to enjoy bowling in India, I’ve been out there quite a few times.

It never bothered me, I think it was due to the fact I grew up bowling at Sophia Gardens mind where the wicket was really slow compared to others around. I was used to bowling on slow wickets. It’s one of those things where you have to learn and adapt and I think the bowlers will have to think on their feet at times but that’s what international cricket is about.

You have to be able to adapt to any given situation and try and do the best for your side really. 

Jofra Archer not in the main squad

I really feel for Jofra. I’ve been there, done that, got the t-shirt when it comes to injuries and setbacks. I love watching Jofra bowl. I think he’s absolutely box office. Good pace, good skill, and he’s just one of those bowlers that when he does bowl, people sit up in their seats and watch.

I can totally understand where he’s probably been mentally over the last couple of years, he’s had setback after setback; his elbow, his back. He’ll be doing his utmost to get back into the team and into the squad just maybe he’s not quite ready yet. 

Travelling reserve?

If he’s fit, I can’t see why they wouldn’t put him in the team. He’s outstanding. If he is fit and firing and he’s bowling like he can, why not? He’s one of those people you’d want in your side every day of the week and twice on Sunday. If he is fit and firing I think he’ll play. 

Test cricket? Ashes 25/26?

How long is a bit of string, we don’t really know. We don’t know what his aspirations are, does he even want to carry on playing Test cricket. That’s a question he has to think about in his own head and in his own mind and what he has to do to carry on playing international cricket and cricket in general around the world.

He’s done so well when he has been fit but I think only Jofra knows. I’d love to see him in the Test team, I think he ticks so many boxes. He’s got immense pace, he’s a gun fielder and he can hold a bat as well. If there’s a chance to have him back in the Test side, I think he’s the only one who knows but I’d love to see him back in it. 

England 2nd favourites at the moment

I don’t see why they can’t go all the way. It will be tough going out to India.

India are favourites on home turf but at the end of the day you never know, it’s always on the day isn’t it? Whoever plays the best, it either goes your way or the other and that’s cricket. England could win it, they’ve got a really strong squad, fingers crossed. I’ll be watching and I’ll be looking forward to it because England are turning into a very good one-day outfit. 

Stokes back

When I saw the news, it was almost a repeat of Moeen Ali in the Ashes. But Ben reminds me of Andrew Flintoff in many ways, where he will do what’s best for the side, and that is play.

I could never ever see him saying no. Whoever asked him to come back, he was going to say yes every day of the week.

It’s great to see him back, he is just one of those guys. I played against him when he was younger and I’ve seen him develop through the years, he’s one of those that you’d want in your trenches. When it hits the fan, then you’d always turn to Ben Stokes so him being in the squad makes the other teams around the world think ‘oh god he’s back in the squad’. It’s a massive positive for England and let’s see how he does. 

Jos’ leadership

I think Jos has been doing a great job. He’s got a good cricket brain on him, you can see that with some of the decisions he’s made. He’s a good leader. He’s quietly spoken off the field, but when he’s in charge, the boys know exactly what he wants from them.

I think the character that he is is just brilliant. He leads from the front and the way he goes through the game and I think he’s an outstanding captain. I think the England boys will be rallying to do as well as they can for him. 

Virat Kohli last dance?

He’s 34, it won’t be his last dance. Look how fit he is. He’s a competitor. But then again it’s down to him and if he’s thinking about it. We don’t know. 34, and a batsman.

I still think he’s got a good few years in him. He looks after himself, he’s a professional.

I really enjoy watching him. He’s a fighter, he’s a scrapper. He’s one of the world’s best batters who has ever played the game. I’m looking forward to seeing him play but I think he’s got enough fire in his belly to keep on going, 100%.

The Australian tour of South Africa begins with the first T20I to be held in Durban on Wednesday. The two sides will square off in three T20Is and five One Day Internationals (ODIs) as they prepare for the World Cup starting in India from October 5.

Australia, the five-time world champions, will be looking to reclaim the title, which they last won in 2015. However, the visitors do not have a full-strength squad at their disposal in South Africa. Here is a list of the players, including several key stars, who are missing the tour due to various reasons.

Which Australian players are unavailable for the South Africa tour?

Steven Smith

The batting mainstay will be missing the entire South Africa tour as he continues to recover from a wrist injury. In fact, the player was battling the same throughout the Ashes and was wearing a splint earlier this month to expedite his recovery. However, he will be returning to the scheme of things for the three-match ODI series in India later in September.

Mitchell Starc

The left-arm pacer has stayed back in Australia to recover from a groin injury that he picked up in England. Starc holds the key for the team during major tournaments like the World Cup but it is still unclear whether he will be coming back into the squad for the ODI series against India.

Pat Cummins

The Australian skipper suffered a small fracture in his wrist as well and will hence miss both the T20I and ODI series against South Africa. Chair of selectors and former captain George Bailey has insisted that they are undertaking a conservative approach for this tour as the players battled significant workload during the World Test Championship (WTC) final and Ashes.

Cummins should be fit in time for the ODIs against India.

Glenn Maxwell

Glenn Maxwell has flown back from South Africa after aggravating his left ankle. It is the same leg that he broke in a freak birthday party incident last year. However, he is confident he will be fit for the India ODIs.

Matthew Wade is his replacement.
