T20 WC Final AU-W vs SA-W reactions: Australia win sixth title

Australia won the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup for the sixth time on Sunday as they defeated their South African counterparts by 19 runs in the final at the Newlands Cricket Ground. Opener Beth Mooney top scored with an unbeaten 74 to take the Meg Lanning-led side to 156 at the end of 20 overs.

She found little support from the rest of the batters barring Ashleigh Gardner, who notched 29 off 21 deliveries batting at number three. Shabnim Ismail and Marizanne Kapp scalped a couple of wickets each for the Proteas as they rounded off a satisfactory first innings.

However, the pressure of the chase got to them in the second innings as they really struggled to get going and were left with over 100 to chase in the last 10 overs. Opener Laura Wolvaardt played a fine knock of 61 but she took 48 deliveries for the same as the South Africans lacked a definite aggressor who could help fetch them quick runs in the middle-overs.

Seasoned South Africans fail to step up

The likes of Kapp and skipper Sune Luus flattered to deceive and there was little support for Wolvaardt from the lower-middle order comprising the likes of Nadine de Klerk, Anneke Bosch and Sinalo Jafta. Chloe Tryon scored 25 but took 23 deliveries for the same and that really didn’t do South Africa much of a favour especially when the required run rate was skyrocketing as the game progressed.

The frontline Australian bowlers really made the job difficult for the chasing team – with the trio of Meghan Schutt, Gardner and Darcie Brown maintaining an economy rate of 5.75, 5 and 6.25 in their respective four-over spells. They also notched a wicket each and were well-supported by Jess Jonassen who dismissed Tryon and conceded 21 in her three overs.

Mooney and Gardner were named as the Player of the Match and as the Player of the Tournament respectively.

Travis Head held robust discussions with selectors after 1st Test snubbing

Australian middle-order batsman Travis Head has revealed that he held robust discussions with the national team selectors after being dropped from the first Test against India in Nagpur earlier this month. Widely regarded as having been the batter of the Australian summer, Head’s exclusion from the playing XI of the opening game sent shockwaves down the cricketing fraternity.

The southpaw returned to the setup in the second Test in New Delhi and scored a gritty 43 whilst opening the batting in the third innings of the game.

“The conversations were robust, I guess, and everyone has different opinions. But I respect the coaching staff and selectors. I have a really strong relationship with them so think that’s what made the conversations the way they went because there’s respect both ways and we are able to voice our opinions,” Head reflected on the situation post the first game, as reported by ESPN Cricinfo.

Head averaged 50.38 with a strike rate of 80.86 in 10 Tests in 2022. He notched a century in the two-match Test series against West Indies and backed it up with three half-centuries against the visiting Proteas soon after. However, a collective score of 91 across five Tests in Pakistan and Sri Lanka earlier last year pushed him down the pecking order when the Australians landed in India this month.

“It is something I didn’t expect coming here, but sometimes that happens and thought I was able to go through that week and prepare myself for another chance. Now it’s making the most of that,” Head further added.

The 29-year-old explained that he was pleased with his footwork in the second innings of the Delhi Test and that the outing was a step forward with regards to his overall gameplay in the subcontinent. He believes that he adopted a defence-first approach in Sri Lanka and the fact that it didn’t deliver good results over there has pushed him to take a more positive attitude whilst looking to attack from the offset here in India. It is a method that has helped him succeed in Australia and Head is now hoping for similar results to follow suit in the coming two Tests as well.

The left-hander is set to open the batting in the absence of David Warner in the third Test in Indore beginning from March 1.

We can always expect high scoring games at the Lahore Stadium as the pitch offers help to the batters with minimal assistance to the bowlers.

The spinners can come into play in the middle overs to give some breakthroughs to either side. After winning the toss, batting first is always a good option at Lahore so that they can put scoreboard pressure on the chasing side.

No rain predicted at the venue this evening.

AU-W vs SA-W Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report: Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 Final | AUS-W vs SA-W Dream11 Prediction Today | Cape Town Pitch Report

Here we go. For the first time ever, a South Africa team – men’s or women’s – is in an ODI or T20 World Cup Final. Friday was a magnificent day for Suun Luus’ team, prevailing over a strong England side to complete a superb turnaround after the shock first up defeat to Sri Lanka 16 days ago.

In the 2023 T20 World Cup Final, this Proteas side has the chance to achieve history in another way, too. They have never beaten Australia in a T20I in six attempts, including back February 18 where they were beaten soundly with 21 balls remaining. But, this is a new day and whole new opportunity, and there is no doubt that they will give it their all.

And give it their all they must. Australia’s remarkable depth was on show yet again, this time in a thrilling semi-final against India. Their ability to win the big moments, particularly in the field, is a huge challenge for the host nation to overcome. Meg Lanning’s team’s significant experience in finals can come to the fore here, especially if they can get off to a good start to quieten what is expected to be a large and loud Cape Town crowd.

Australia have the luxury of adjusting their batting lineup according to the situation.

Australia: 1. Alyssa Healy (wk), 2. Beth Mooney, 3. Meg Lanning (c), 4. Ashleigh Gardner, 5. Ellyse Perry, 6. Tahlia McGrath, 7. Grace Harris, 8. Georgia Wareham, 9. Jess Jonassen, 10. Megan Schutt, 11. Darcie Brown

South Africa: 1. Laura Wolvaardt, 2. Tazmin Brits, 3. Marizanne Kapp, 4. Chloe Tyron, 5. Nadine de Klerk, 6. Sune Luus (c), 7. Anneke Bosch, 8. Sinalo Jafta (wk), 9. Shabnim Ismail, 10. Ayabonga Khaka, 11. Nonkululeko Mlaba

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Australia:

  • Alyssa Healy owns World Cup finals. In the 2020 T20 World Cup, she smashed 75 off 39 balls against India. In the 2022 ODI World Cup, she hammered a record 170 off 138 balls against England.
  • Interestingly, Healy has struggled against South Africa in the past. She has scored just 31 runs in four innings against them to date.
  • Beth Mooney is coming off a half-century against India. She too has excellent numbers in World Cup finals, with 78* (54) in 2020 (T20I) and 62 (47) in 2022 (ODI).
  • Meg Lanning has struck three 40+ scores in four innings in this World Cup. The only game she missed out was against South Africa, where she scored 1.
  • Tahlia McGrath was player of the match against the Proteas earlier in the tournament. She hit 57 off 33 balls.
  • Ashleigh Gardner is the only Australia player to have won two player of the match awards in this World Cup. She has taken at least one wicket in four of the five games, and has scored 19*, 28* and 31 in her past three knocks.
  • Megan Schutt has taken nine wickets in five matches this tournament at an average of 12.44 and strike rate of 10.6.

South Africa:

  • Laura Wolvaardt has come good at the right time. The classy opener has scored 66* and 53 in her past two knocks.
  • Wolvaardt has made scores of 41 and 19 in her two T20Is against Australia to date.
  • Tazmin Brits is in excellent touch. She scored 45 (36) against Australia last week, followed by 50* (51) vs Bangladesh and 68 (55) vs England.
  • The great Marizanne Kapp found her batting mojo in the semi-final. After a difficult group stage with the bat, she scored a vital 27* off 13 balls against England.
  • Kapp also bowled beautifully against Australia earlier in this tournament. She took 2/21, dismissing Beth Mooney LBW and Ellyse Perry caught.
  • Shabnim Ismail, who took a brilliant 3/27 in the semi-final, has picked up nine wickets in six T20Is against Australia at an average of 14.33 and economy of 6.29.
  • Ayabonga Khaka took three wickets in a game-changing 18th over against England to finish with 4/29. She will be key, especially at the backend of the Australia innings.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-head: Matches 6, Australia 6, South Africa 0.
  • Australia (125/4) beat South Africa (124/6) comfortably with 21 balls to spare earlier in this World Cup.
  • Alyssa Healy is Australia’s leading run-scorer in this World Cup (171) with an average of 57.00 and strike rate of 119.58.

Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 Final: AU-W vs SA-W Match Prediction – Who will win?

Batsmen with most runs in first six Tests

Cricket News: Batsmen with most runs in their first six Tests | Who has the most runs in their first six Test matches?

Harry Brook lit up the Basin Reserve on the opening day of the second Test match against New Zealand with an unbeaten 184 off 169 deliveries to take the visitors to 315 in 65 overs. The 24-year-old has been in sublime touch since debuting last year, garnering praise from all quarters including skipper Ben Stokes who likened him to become an all-format superstar like Virat Kohli.

After this innings, Brook has registered his name in a marquee list of players to have notched the most runs in their first six Test matches. Let us take a look at the greats that the young Englishman has joined in this category.

Who has the most runs in their first six Test matches?

1. Sunil Gavaskar: 912 runs

The Indian stalwart endured one of the most hostile debut tours of all time – facing the ferocious Caribbean pace attack in their own backyard in 1971. However, Gavaskar emerged triumphant out of the challenge, first recording half-centuries in both innings of the first Test before bringing up a century in each of the following three games.

He even scored an unbeaten 220 in the third innings of the fourth Test, thus solidifying the notion that he was up to counter and combat the vicious pace of the West Indian bowling unit. Gavaskar then headed off to England and carried on his form with half-centuries at both Lord’s and Old Trafford, tallying a total of 912 runs in his first six games, which is a record that holds its ground till this day.

2. Sir Donald Bradman: 862 runs

For all that it is worth; even Sir Donald Bradman with a career average of 99.94 had a modest start to his Test career. He scored 19 runs across both innings of his first game against England at the Exhibition Ground in 1928.

However, Sir Bradman followed it up with four centuries and then a double century (254) in his sixth game in Lord’s against England in 1930. His progressive career average had already shot up to 78.36 by the end of his sixth game, which was clear testament of the fact that he was destined for greatness right from the offset. Sir Bradman only went from strength to strength from there on, with his all-time high score of 334 coming in his seventh Test in Headingly against England in July 1930.

3. Harry Brook: 807 runs

With the kind of form that Brook is in, he can very well look to surpass both Sir Bradman and Gavaskar in this list by the end of the ongoing Test match.

Brook shot into fame with centuries in each of the three Tests that England played in Pakistan late last year. His stint in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) enabled him to acclimatize well to the playing conditions over there but he demonstrated terrific versatility to adapt seamlessly to the red-ball format.

He notched 89 and 54 in the first couple of innings of the first Test against the Kiwis last week. Brook then went a step higher and scored a swashbuckling 184 on Thursday. By all means, the batsman is slated to have an incredible Test career and the early signs of the same are there to be seen for all as of now.

Heading towards the match number 13, Islamabad United are coming in with a comfortable win last night and would be raring to go hard again against Quetta Gladiators. Islamabad are back on track and hence they stand second in the points table whereas Gladiators are at the bottom of the table with a single win in four matches.

Islamabad and Quetta both have a quality pace bowling attack. However, even after changing the batting order last game, Abdul Bangalzai has failed to come good and this might force Gladiators to make a change in XI. On the other hand, the capital side, Islamabad, is more likely to go with the same winning combination. All the changes made by Islamabad last night resulted very well as Hasan Ali and Gurbaz had a fantastic match.

A high scoring game can be expected as both the heavy top order sides face each other at the National Stadium, Karachi tonight.

National Stadium Karachi Pitch Report and Weather

The pitch at National Stadium has been fantastic from the batters point of view and hence producing a lot of runs thus far. But as the tournament progresses, the pitch is getting a little bit hard to bat on in later stages of the game when pace is taken off or ball gets older.

The weather hasn’t yet been the obstacle for the games so far and the same will happen tonight; no rain is predicted. But the dew factor comes into play in the second innings and makes it a little bit easier for the team chasing.

Newlands Cape Town Pitch Report and Weather

It will be a pleasant day for a game of cricket in Cape Town. The pitch is good for batting as the ball comes onto the bat nicely. The batters can score big once they are settled in, as shown yesterday where Australia and India faced off in a relatively high-scoring clash.

There will be some help for the pacers in powerplay and the spinners could also get some purchase off the pitch. Before the IND-AUS Semi-Final, the average first innings score here is 150 runs and teams chasing have won five out of the ten games played here.

Another major tournament, another final for this great Australia team. For India, it was the latest near miss, falling short when victory looked theirs.

In a game that had eerie similarities to the 2022 Commonwealth Games Final, Australia displayed the usual fight and composure under pressure to further confirm their status as the greatest ever team in the women’s game.

The turning points? Jemimah Rodrigues hit a superb 43 off 24 balls and her dismissal was vital for Australia. But, Harmanpreet Kaur, who was struggling for form previously, was in sublime touch. She took the equation to 41 off 33 needed, but that is when disaster struck. Attempting the second run, the Indian captain’s bat got caught when sliding into the crease and was run out for the first time in five years. India could then only manage 37 off the final five overs to fall short by five runs.

With regards to Australia, they were blessed with contributions right down the lineup yet again. Darcie Brown was outstanding with the ball, while Ellyse Perry’s fielding highlighted the key difference between the teams. Ash Gardner’s all-round heroics won her player of the match, after crucial knocks by Beth Mooney and Meg Lanning.

And, in the end, that final over – and ball – of the Australian innings proved vital.

Five incredible facts about James Anderson since turning 35

Cricket News: Five incredible facts about James Anderson since turning 35 | James Anderson moves to the top of the Test bowling rankings

James Anderson, at age 40, has taken top spot in the Test bowling rankings following his magnificent performance in the first Test against New Zealand at Mount Maunganui. The ageless Anderson produced yet another exhibition, taking 3/36 and 4/18 to guide England to their tenth win out of 11 Tests under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum.

James Anderson, the machine since turning 35

Anderson has been a terrific bowler for England, with his performances in Australia in 2010/11 and India in 2012 key highlights. However, what he has achieved since turning 35 is nothing short of remarkable, taking his tally up to 682 Test scalps as of 19 February, 2023.

“I just can’t see him stopping,” said Ben Stokes. And how true. Anderson’s longeivity is unlikely to ever be matched, especially given the packed cricketing schedule owing to the rise of T20 leagues. But, even without T20 leagues, a pace bowler playing nearly 200 Tests over a period of 20 years is unthinkable.

With that being said, here are five incredible facts about James Anderson since turning 35.

1. 200+ wickets

Any up-and-coming cricketer would dream of taking 200 Test wickets in their lifetime.

Anderson has achieved this since turning 35.

In this period, the seamer has picked up 202 wickets at an incredible average of 20.56, with ten five-wicket hauls.

2. Second-most wickets of any player in the world since 35th birthday

Only Nathan Lyon has taken more wickets (221) than Anderson’s 202. As of February 23, 2023, Anderson is one of three bowlers to have taken at least 200 Test scalps since July 30th, 2017, with Australia’s Pat Cummins the other to do so (202).

3. Best average and economy among top 15 wicket-takers in Tests since 2017

Out of the top 15 wicket-takers in Test cricket in this period, Anderson’s average of 20.57 is the best. Pat Cummins is next best with 21.33, followed by R Ashwin’s 21.85.

Also, Anderson has the best economy rate, conceding just 2.34 per over. The next best is R Ashwin at 2.62. Anderson’s numbers are simply remarkable when you consider the amount of boundaries hit in a cricket game these days.

4. Fifth-oldest bowler to be ranked number one in Tests

Only four bowlers have ever been ranked the number one bowler in Tests at an older age than Anderson. However, Anderson is the oldest since 1936.

Bert Ironmonger (50 years, ten months), Clarrie Grimmett (44 years, two months), Tich Freeman (41 years, two months) and Sydney Barnes (40 years, nine months) were older than Anderson’s 40 years and six months.

5. Averages below 27 in every country

Since the beginning of 2017, Anderson averages less than 27 in every country he he played in. He is the list of his averages in each nation:

  • Australia: 26
  • England 20
  • India: 16
  • New Zealand: 21
  • South Africa 19.8
  • Sri Lanka: 21
  • Pakistan: 18

The great man is showing no signs of slowing down. He is now just 18 wickets away from becoming the third bowler in history – and first pace bowler – to take 700 Test scalps.

The way he’s going, even Muralitharan’s magical 800 is in sight.

Australia and India will lock horns in the first semi-final of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023.

Australia finished at the top of the points table in Group A with four wins in four matches. They are yet to lose a game in the tournament. The Aussie side is the strongest team in women’s cricket. They have exceptional depth in both batting and bowling. The likes of Alyssa Healy, Beth Mooney, Ellyse Perry, Ashleigh Gardner, Tahlia McGrath, Meg Lanning, Megan Schutt, Darcie Brown and others form a very strong and intimidating team.

Indian, meanwhile, finished in second position in Group B with three wins in four games. Their only defeat came against England. The Indian team is in decent form but there are a few issues which they must fix before the semi-final. Harmanpreet Kaur’s form is a big concern and she must perform in this game if India is to win the match. The batting units lack consistency while the bowlers also need to be disciplined with the ball. India will have to be at their best to give themselves any chance of winning the game.
