“I’ll be lying if I said that I didn’t have any feelings of disappointment. I certainly was expecting to play a role in the tournament,” the 32-year-old was quoted in a report by ESPNcricinfo.
Disappointed, but focused on India – Bavuma after the SA20 Auction
He added, “From my side, there are definitely feelings of disappointment and also feelings of almost being let down in a way. I don’t think that comes from any point of entitlement from my side.”
Bavuma’s scenario presented a unique case of a national side captain going unpicked for the country’s premier T20 competition. He has led the Proteas in 13 ODIs and 17 T20Is respectively so far. However, Bavuma has been out of international action since June as he was nursing an elbow injury.
“I am cautioning myself to not delve too deep into this whole matter. As much as I’d like to speak more about it, this is probably not the right time. Our focus right now is on India and the World Cup. We are doing what we need to do there,” he further talked about the issue.
Outgoing head coach Mark Boucher insisted that the team backs Bavuma through this time in a way that ‘you’ cannot believe. “The guys were there last night, we were having a couple of drinks, and I could just see the energy around him because I understand the situation he is going through. The bottom line is we are on a journey, and we have been on a journey the last two years,” Boucher provided an insight into the team environment.
He further explained that there is a need to separate the upcoming T20 leagues from the national team focus. Boucher conceded that the happenings in leagues and auctions are uncontrollable but he reiterated that the team has placed its 100 per cent backing as South Africa heads into the T20 World Cup in Australia next year.

Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam rounded up a flawless run chase against England at the National Stadium in Karachi in September 2022. Chasing 200, the Pakistani openers took apart the English bowling line-up. Together, they struck 16 fours and 11 sixes and particularly mercilessly decimated Luke Wood during the course of the innings.
The Pakistani middle-order has come under scanner in recent times. Babar and Rizwan aren’t really new to mastering T20I chases. Last year, they spearheaded Pakistan’s first victory against India in a World Cup tie in the Dubai International Stadium. India had put up an under-par 151 runs in the first innings but the Pakistani openers rendered the Indian bowlers toothless.
They were both cautious yet proactive in their approach and never let the Indian bowlers slip in some tight overs in between. Mohammed Shami had a poor day at the office but none of his other teammates offered enough bite that could trouble the arch-rivals in such a crucial encounter.
5. England vs New Zealand, 143/0, Wellington, 2013
The English T20I side wasn’t really known for its T20I credentials before Eoin Morgan brought about a revolution on that front from 2015 onwards. However, Michael Lumb and Alex Hales had provided a slight glimmer of hope for what rested ahead for their limited-overs fortunes way back in 2013 itself.

Also, Bumrah has a great record against Maxwell in T20s. The pacer has dismissed the big hitter seven times in 65 balls, conceding just 75 in the process.
Australia:
What a performance it was by Cameron Green in the first T20I. The all-rounder turned opener smashed 61 at a strike rate of above 200. This included 16 off six balls against Umesh, 11 off five against Harshal and 21 off eight against Chahal.
Steve Smith’s new approach was on show in Mohali. He struck at 145.83, which is well above his career T20 strike rate of 122.60 against India. Overall vs IND, Smith has scored 141 runs in seven knocks at an average of 23.50.
Can Glenn Maxwell find his rhythm? Against India in India, Maxwell has scored 245 runs in six innings at an average of 49.00 and strike rate of 155.06. This includes a century.
Matthew Wade has a strike rate of 213.1 between overs 16 and 20 in T20Is since the start of 2021. He has smashed 179 runs off 84 balls in this period.

Ganguly, in a note to the board’s affiliated state units, said that IPL 2023 will see teams have home and away games, as was the case pre-2020. For example, Royal Challengers Bangalore will return to the Chinnaswamy, Rajasthan Royals to Sawai Masingh, Chennai Super Kings to Chepauk and so on.
“The next season of men’s IPL will also go back to the home and away format with all ten teams playing their home matches at their designated venues,” Ganguly’s note read. The president’s note also included the Women’s IPL, set for early 2023 after the T20 World Cup ends in February in South Africa. This is in addition to a new girls’ under-15 one-day competition.
“The BCCI is currently working on the much-awaited Women’s IPL. We are expecting to start the first season early next year,” Ganguly wrote.
“We are glad to introduce a girls U15 One Day tournament from this season. Women’s cricket has seen phenomenal growth across the world and our national team has been performing well. This new tournament will create a pathway for our young girls to play at the national and international level.”
Also, according to ESPNcricinfo, a full domestic season in penciled in to start in early September. This includes the Duleep Trophy – in a zonal format – and the Irani Cup, in addition to the Ranji Trophy, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Surprisingly though, Bumrah sat out of the first T20I against the visitors in Mohali on Tuesday. Now, it has emerged that the team management had decided against rushing the pacer back into action straightaway after his long injury layoff.

“I don’t think we bowled well. 200 is a good score to defend, and we didn’t take our chances in the field. It was a great effort from our batters, but bowlers were not quite there. There are things we need to look at, but it was a great game for us to understand what went wrong. We know this is a high-scoring ground. You can’t relax even if you get 200. Fletcher will also be looking to improve on a poor record at Providence Stadium. In 12 innings on this ground, the opener has scored just 143 runs at an average of 15.89 and strike rate of 80.79.
Evin Lewis has also found the going tough at Guyana, with 115 runs in eight innings at an average of 16.43 and strike rate of 72.33. He fares better overall against Barbados, with 360 runs in 12 innings since 2015 at an average of 30.00 and strike rate of 147.54.

If they are to make an impact in the upcoming World Cup, one feels Pakistan need to shelve the desire to anchor for extended periods. The onus is on Babar Azam, who was coy on strike rates in the lead up to this series, to have a much better time of things than in the recent Asia Cup.
Babar and Pakistan will have the opportunity to find form against a new-look England side decimated by injuries. The tourists themselves have had a tough year in T20Is, with poor performances in the powerplay with bat and ball meaning they have a lot of catching up to do. David Willey and the returning Alex Hales will be key in rectifying that.

Pakistan:
The spotlight is on Babar Azam after a poor Asia Cup. The captain has a terrific record in T20s at Karachi National Stadium, with 1,458 runs in 34 matches at an average of 60.75 and strike rate of 133.15.
Shan Masood has had a year to remember. In 26 T20s in 2022, Masood has struck 1,025 runs at an average of 42.71 and strike rate of 139.08.
At Karachi in PSL 2022, Masood made scores of 35 (25), 43 (31), 88 (58), 83 (50) and 26 (18).
Khushdil Shah had a memorable PSL 2022 campaign, where many of the games were played on this ground. In 16 T20s at Karachi, Khushdil has scored 246 runs at an average of 30.75 and strike rate of 138.20. Also, he took the fifth-most wickets in this year’s PSL (16) at an economy of 6.89 and strike rate of 12.1.
No bowler has more wickets in T20s at Karachi than Shadab Khan. The legspinner has taken 32 wickets in just 21 matches at an average of 18.09 and strike rate of 14.91.
Mohammad Nawaz was one of Pakistan’s top performers in the recent Asia Cup. Expect him to have a say in the powerplay and middle overs as England are expected to have at least four right-handers in their top six.

Welcome back, Alex Hales. England are in need of a powerplay boost, and Hales has been magnificent at that stage in T20s this year, with 876 runs at a strike rate of 171.1.
In 14 innings at the National Stadium, Hales has smashed 411 runs at an average of 31.62 and strike rate of 141.24.
Phil Salt has struck 553 runs at a strike rate of 156.2 between overs 1-6 this year. The keeper-batsman will be looking to make amends after a poor PSL 2022 campaign where he scored just 63 runs in eight innings at an average of 9.00.
Watch out for the impressive Harry Brook. He smashed a century in PSL 2022, part of 874 runs in 35 short-form matches this year at an average of 33.62 and strike rate of 156.07.
Moeen Ali will be key as a spin hitter in the middle overs. Between overs 7-16 this year, Moeen has scored 615 runs at an average of 27.95 strike rate of 148.55. Also, there are a few left-handers to target with his off-spin.
