The modern era or new era of cricket is that of the T20s. Be it franchise cricket or T20 Internationals, the T20 format is the most popular format of cricket in current times.

So, has Test cricket lost its popularity in this T20 era? Not quite. Test cricket is still as popular as ever because it has its own charm and uniqueness.

One Day cricket, on the other hand, is kind of a mix of both T20 and Tests. It’s not as long as the Test matches but isn’t as short as the T20s either. Surprisingly ODI cricket has lost its popularity, and is often the most irrelevant format in the game.

Decreasing Popularity of ODI Cricket

It’s mostly because of the new rules that were implemented in the past and also due to the rapid rise of the T20 format. Franchise cricket continues to grow rapidly, and Test cricket has its own importance. So, why are ODIs the least popular format at the moment?

You can say that the ODI World Cup is still the most important and popular tournament in cricket. Yes, but what about when there’s no World Cup? When was the last time you witnessed an enthralling, competitive ODI series? You may have to give it some thought and I’m sure that you will recall a series between the big cricketing nations like India, Australia, and England.

It’s clear that ODI cricket is not the same as it was in the past. People who don’t like the One Day format can say that it’s not as competitive and is kind of boring these days and it’s true to an extent too.

One Day Cricket in the current era is the batsman’s game. Everyone likes seeing sixes and fours in a game but most of the ODI games are not competitive as they used to be. Even scores over 330 are mowed down. So how can ODI cricket be relevant again? How can those in suits ensure its revival?

How to Revive ODI Cricket?

The ODI Super League is a terrific concept to help revive ODI cricket. However, there are a few things within the ODI match itself that can be altered to ensure its attractiveness.

1. Ditching Two New Balls

When was the last time you saw reverse swing in a One Day game? I don’t think you can recall it. The art of reverse swing is extinct in ODI cricket. This is because of the two new balls rule, i.e. one ball for each end in ODI cricket, which has resulted in the extinction of reverse swing.

Reverse swing kept the bowlers and the balance between bat and ball in the game. But two new balls, flat pitches, and small boundaries have tilted the game too far towards the favor of the batters. ICC should ditch the two new balls rule in ODIs to keep the format relevant and it will make the matches more interesting for the viewers.

2. More Matches for Associate Nations/Lower-Ranked Teams

Small Nations likes Ireland, Netherlands, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan, Scotland, and even Sri Lanka Bangladesh should get to play more games against big teams like India, Australia, England, and the others.

In the current times, the big nations mostly play amongst themselves and due to that, the small nations don’t get the chance to play against strong teams. Even teams like Sri Lanka and Bangladesh rarely get to play against the likes of England, Australia, or India.

The ODI Super League will allow more teams to play each other with context, and eventually help the smaller teams, and the game itself, to grow.

Cricket is a very unique sport as it has three different formats and all of them have their own importance.  One Day Cricket is unique too and shouldn’t end up being completely irrelevant as fans have some very fond memories with the format.

3. Return of Batting Powerplay

Batting powerplay was a part of the game until 2015. The batting team had the option to take the batting powerplay in the last 10 overs. Only three fieldiers were allowed outside the 30 yard circle.

It had a different dimension to the game, especially in close chases when the batting side had only one or two batters left at the crease. But in the current situation it needs to be implemented correctly or the game will tilt even more towards the batsmen.

Ditching the two new balls and the (possible) return of reverse-swing will make ODIs even more interesting. The Big Bash League introduced the same concept named as the “Power-Surge” and it surely made the game exciting. Runs were scored but a lot of wickets fell as well during the “power-surge” period. The same effect can happen in ODI cricket, with the fielding captain forced to keep fielders inside the circle, which can also bring about some wickets.

Unbelievable. England, who started the series with a completely new-look team, have achieved a 3-0 series whitewash.

Their opponents? The current Champions Trophy holders Pakistan, who won the trophy in England.

England’s white-ball depth is just unreal. Only the most optimistic England fan could have even thought of a 3-0 series victory with their whole first squad in isolation. Take a bow, James Vince. Saqib Mahmood should join him. As should Lewis Gregory, Brydon Carse and Phil Salt. The run-chase of 332 from a position of 165/5 shows that an England team, no matter the personnel, are never down and out.

For Pakistan, this series was nothing short of a major disappoinment. Favourites heading into it, they end it with a sense of embarrassment given that the England XI, excluding Ben Stokes, contained just 26 ODIs of experience before the series started.

Worse, of those 26, James Vince accounted for 16.

Despite Babar Azam’s superb 158, Pakistan’s ODI record vs top 4 ranked ODI teams (New Zealand, India, England, Australia) since the start of 2017 makes for even more grim reading. Yes, they won the Champions Trophy in that period, but they haven’t been able to match it with the best teams for long enough. Of 31 completed ODIs, Pakistan have won just six – a win percentage of a shocking 19.35%.

The inexperienced Indian brigade is in Sri Lanka for a white-ball series comprising three ODIs and as many T20Is, starting 18 and 25 July respectively.

With senior players in the UK for the high-profile Test series against England, the second-string Indian team led by Shikhar Dhawan will face the Lankan challenge. The 20-member Indian squad includes as many as six uncapped players who have been selected in the absence of numerous first-choice players.

This series will provide the young cricketers with the stage to impress the national selectors and management ahead of the T20 World Cup in UAE.

ICC Super League points will be up for grabs in the upcoming ODI series, so there is additional motivation for the India players to perform. The Indian team management has already made it clear that the men in blue will be looking to win all the games they will play in Sri Lanka.  Starting with the One-day series, the spotlight will be on the talented uncapped players who will be looking to make the most of the given opportunities in the series. Nitish Rana

The left-hander has made a name for himself by consistently performing well for Delhi in domestic tournaments and also for Kolkata in the IPL. Rana has shown his class and pedigree with the bat, and in the past few seasons has been on the verge of getting a national call, which many believe he should’ve gotten earlier.

The 27-year-old got his fame mainly from the IPL, but his List A record is much better than his IPL and overall T20 record. In 60 List A games, Rana averages 40.4 for his 1940 runs at a strike rate of 84.8. In this year’s domestic one-day competition (Vijay Hazare Trophy), Rana was the top-run getter for Delhi with 398 runs in seven matches at an average of 66.33. With the ability to play spin and seam equally well, Rana can be a perfect bid in India’s new-look middle order in the coming 50-over games.

Krishnappa Gowtham

Unlike many players in the squad, Gowtham didn’t get a single game in the first phase of IPL 2021, which is why his selection raised questions over the criteria of the selections. The Karnataka all-rounder has impressive numbers in List A cricket with the ball. In 47 games, he has bagged 70 wickets at an economy rate of under 5 runs per over.

In addition to picking up wickets, he bats well down the order. He has shown that he can tonk the ball a long way and his career strike rate of over 140 in List A cricket suggests exactly that.

India’s main focus will be centered around the T20 series. Knowing the relevance of the T20 World Cup and India’s first choice pool of players in this format, it is most likely that if Gowtham plays he will get his chance with the one day team. The plus point of Gowtham is that he has got the control while bowling with the new ball and in typical subcontinent conditions in Sri Lanka, you need your slow bowlers to bowl the crucial overs and make use of the conditions.

Ruturaj Gaikwad

Ruturaj often takes his time at the start of his innings, opposite to Sehwag’s approach. He has a measured approach to his game. Even in T20 cricket, he takes a few overs to settle in and the 50-over format gives you a lot of time as a top-order batsman.

Gaikwad, who has been a consistent run-scorer for India A and Maharashtra, has scored 2,681 runs at an average and strike rate of 47.87 and 97.59 respectively in his four-year-long List A career. In 58 innings, the right-handed batsman has scored seven centuries and 16 half-centuries.

He also looked quite good in the intra-squad practice game a few days back. If he somehow managed to catch coach Rahul Dravid’s eyes, then we might see him wearing the blue jersey soon. The Indian team is traveling with too many top-order players, but the experience of playing with India A certainly pushes his case ahead of the other possible debutants.

The trainwreck that is Australia’s Caribbean T20I series has another stop. Now, it’s not a matter of if the Aussies will fire, but rather it’s a necessity that they do to keep the series alive. Their performance in the second T20I was worse than their first from an all-round perspective, going down by a massive 56 runs. From the moment Shimron Hetmyer and Dwayne Bravo got a hold of the Aussie attack – including the out-of-form Mitchell Starc – Australia were never in the game.

Another poor batting display hampered the touring side, who must surely be still scratching their heads as to what their best combinations are. With the T20 World Cup fast approaching, such a predicament is certainly not ideal, but the pressure of keeping a series alive might just be the catalyst for a shift in form.

Don’t tell that to West Indies, though. The men in maroon are coming off their own series defeat against South Africa, and they have gone some way to putting that behind them in this series to date. In both games, the depth of the Windies came to the fore, with Andre Russell, Shimron Hetmyer, Dwayne Bravo and all the bowlers keeping Australia at bay. Do it one more time here and the series will be wrapped up.

West Indies:

  • Shimron Hetmyer is a danger man in the middle overs of a T20. His 61 off 36 balls won him player of the match in the second T20I, after starts in his previous two T20Is (31 and 20).
  • Andre Russell is enjoying a much better series vs Australia (51 off 28 balls and 24* off 8 balls) than he did against South Africa (62 runs, avg. 15.50). In nine T20s on this ground, Russell strikes at a superb 221.13 per 100 balls. He has also taken two wickets in four overs this series.
  • Time for Lendl Simmons to convert a start? He has made scores of 27 and 30 in this series, getting out just as he was starting to get settled.
  • Dwayne Bravo has been superb with both bat and ball in recent times. He is coming off a score of 47* (34) last game and has taken 11 wickets in his last seven T20Is.
  • Hayden Walsh Jr is enjoying some series. He has taken three wickets in both games (3/23 and 3/29) and he will be looking to do more of the same here.
  • Expect Obed McCoy to return in this game. McCoy has taken 17 wickets in his last nine T20Is (including 4/26 in the first T20I). He has gone wicketless only once in these last nine matches.

  • In New Zealand earlier this year, Aaron Finch was under pressure of making scores of 1 and 12 in the first two T20Is. He then bounced back with scores of 69, 79* and 36. Can he do the same here?

ODI cricket returns to Ireland in what is a crucial series for the home side. The Irish, who languish in 10th spot with seven defeats in nine matches – including a 2-1 series defeat to The Netherlands – need points desperately if they want to qualify directly to the 2023 ODI World Cup.

The test awaiting them here certainly promises to be a tough one. South Africa are riding a wave of a successful tour of the Caribbean, where they held their own superbly in the T20I series. The Proteas still aren’t the completed package in ODI cricket, but the potency of their pace attack, form of Quinton de Kock and Aiden Markram, and a middle order looking for more consistency should hold them in good stead.

And, of course, Temba Bavuma’s side will be after critical Super League points. South Africa currently sit bottom of the table, but have played the least number of games along with Zimbabwe, so this series presents a very viable opportunity to make strides up the table.

Ireland:

  • Paul Stirling will be crucial at the top for the home side. The right-hander is the leading run-scorer in ODIs in 2021 (546 runs, avg. 78.00), with three centuries and two half-centuries in eight ODIs. He will be aiming to improve his record vs South Africa which reads: 3 ODIs, 59 runs, avg. 19.66.
  • Skipper Andy Balbirnie will also be key. He has been struggling in ODIs this year (8 ODIs, 161 runs, avg. 23.00), so a turnaround is essential for his team.
  • Ireland are set to welcome back classy all-rounder Curtis Campher. The South African-born Campher has scored three half-centuries in eight ODIs, as well as eight wickets.
  • Josh Little was a huge positive for Ireland in the series against The Netherlands. He took eight wickets in the three matches (3/32, 4/39, 1/35). His pace will be key in making the South African batsmen uncomfortable.
  • Craig Young took three wickets in his only ODI vs South Africa, back in 2016. However, he went for a huge 81 runs.
  • Barry McCarthy has the most wickets of any bowler in ODIs at Malahide (7 matches, 13 wickets, avg. 30.15).

South Africa:

  • How good has Quinton de Kock been since he was relieved of the captaincy? He was superb in the West Indies, scoring 255 runs in the five T20Is at an average of 51.00. Also, he has made a score of 82 in his two ODIs vs Ireland.
  • Aiden Markram has also been brilliant in 2021. He has scored 292 runs in seven T20Is at an average of 41.71 and strike rate of 158.69, and will be looking to transfer this form to ODIs.
  • Temba Bavuma scored a century on his ODI debut against Ireland back in 2016 (113).
  • Rassie van der Dussen averages an extraordinary 80.90 in 23 ODIs. David Miller’s 60 runs against Ireland have come at a strike rate of 153.84.

So, here we are for the middle game of the series, where India will be looking to keep it alive. The Women in Red will be happy with this and they are charged up for the second game which is to be played at Hove. It is a must-win clash for the Women in Blue as they will be willing to take the series to the last game as well. Both teams would want their key players to perform well and to be at their best in the important game on Sunday.

India Women need to be better in both departments.   • Team India’s leading bowler Shikha Pandey will have to play as a key factor if India wants to level up the series on Sunday. She was most economical and took three important wickets in the previous game. She has taken six wickets in seven innings against England so far and would like to take a few more in the remaining games. She can also contribute some runs while batting.

  • Both England openers Tammy Beaumont and Danielle Wyatt gave a fine start to their innings in the first T20I. In addition, they would love to continue this form, which can help their team to win. Tammy has scored 226 runs in 12 innings (avg. 20.54) whereas Danni has 364 runs (avg. 30.33) to her name against India. 
  • Nat Sciver was in stupendous form and was hitting very brutally. She hit eight fours and a six in her score of 55 (27). She also contributed in the bowling department as she took a wicket. Sciver has scored 241 runs in 11 innings and scalped four wickets against India.

It had been a while since Australia played any international cricket. However, the glaring issues in their T20 batting remain despite some new faces. Faced with a seemingly easy scenario of 41 runs to win in 60 balls with six wickets in hand, Australia decided to put all common sense to the side and play as if they needed 141 runs. The shot selection was atrocious, as they surrendered the perfect opportunity to start their tour on the perfect note.

However, in Australia’s weakness we can see West Indies’ strength. Such is their depth that they can never been written off, and that applies not only to their bowling effort, but also the effort of Andre Russell with the bat. His 28-ball 51 took the Windies to a defendable total after Josh Hazlewood further pressed his claims for more games in T20Is with a superb powerplay bowling performance.

Now, the Windies have the chance to take a 2-0 series lead and build some momentum. After their series defeat to South Africa, and without the services of regular skipper Kieron Pollard in the opening game, a 2-0 series lead can build some great confidence with the T20 World Cup approaching.

  • Andre Russell struggled against South Africa (62 runs, avg. 15.50). He produced the goods yesterday after getting dropped early on, scoring 51 off 28 balls to rescue the Windies’ innings. He has now scored 133 runs in T20s on this ground at an average of 33.25 and superb strike rate of 211.11.
  • Can Evin Lewis bounce back after a duck in the first T20I? He was recently West Indies’ leading run-scorer in the series vs South Africa (178, avg. 35.60, SR 160.36).
  • Kieron Pollard missed the first T20I owing to a hamstring injury. If he is available, then Australia needs to watch out as Pollard has smashed 541 runs at an average of 90.17 and strike rate of 177.38 in T20s on this ground.
  • How well is Obed McCoy going? The left-armer continues to bamboozle batsmen with his slower ball, which has resulted in 17 wickets in his last nine T20Is (including 4/26 yesterday). He has gone wicketless only once in these last nine matches.
  • Hayden Walsh Jr enjoyed a very successful return to the Windies team. His 3/23 helped kickstart the Aussie collapse. Fabian Allen was also good with the ball (2/24), and produced some superb catching in the field.

  • Matthew Wade was looking in superb touch (33 off 14 balls) before slapping one straight to deep point. Wade’s batting was all-the-more impressive given he usually struggles in T20 chases. When batting first, he has scored 1,946 runs at 36.72 (SR 149.12). When batting second, the numbers drop significantly to 18.02 and 118.09 respectively.
  • Mitchell Marsh scored a fine 31-ball 51 yesterday (along with 2/26), but would have been disappointed to not finish the job for Australia. Marsh has been in fine form on this tour, with scores of 56 (28) and 31 (21) in the intra-squad matches before the first T20I.
  • Josh Hazlewood was outstanding in the first T20I, producing figures of 3/12. During the powerplay, he took figures of 2/3 in three overs, including a maiden. It will be fascinating to see how the Windies batsmen respond.
  • Ashton Agar has taken 19 wickets in 12 T20Is since the start of 2020, including two five-fors. He will be key in conditions that can assist spin, along with Adam Zampa. Both went wicketless in the first T20I, as did the struggling Mitchell Starc.
