As of late, there have been a lot of Test matches going on. India vs Australia ended recently along with England vs Sri Lanka and Pakistan vs South Africa. Now, England and India are battling each other in a 4-match Test series, and Bangladesh are looking to level their series after a miracle Windies win at Chattogram.

That being said, it is not long when the T20 action comes back to life. T10, on the other hand, is going on in the UAE, but soon one of the best T20 leagues is about to begin. Yes, the tournament under consideration here is none other than the Pakistan Super League.

PSL 6 will be beginning shortly after the T20 series between Pakistan and South Africa concludes. The entire PSL schedule is already out which you can go through below. Since, the current year, 2021, is when the ICC T20 World Cup takes place, so the teams are focusing more and more on playing those T20 matches. As for the Pakistan Super League, it has always been great and many expectations are there this year as well. The whole tournament will be played in the home country and the venues are mentioned later in the article too. The fans are hoping this season to be the best as compared to all the previous ones, and undoubtedly, PSL has got that capability to give tough competition to all the top T20 leagues like the IPL, BBL, or Natwest T20 Blast, etc.

Below, in this article, you can read all you need to know about the Pakistan Super League 2021. Its complete schedule, venue details, and lastly, full teams squad players list are mentioned. So, without any further ado, let’s begin!

PSL 2021 Complete Schedule/Time Table

Just like last year, this time around as well, there will be 34 matches played in the league. The tournament is set to begin from the 20^th of February, six days after the South Africa tour of Pakistan ends. The Pakistan Super League 2021 will continue up till the 22^nd of March when the final will be played in Lahore.

The first match begins at 7 PM PST on Feb 20^th. It will be between the defending champions Karachi Kings, and the 2019 PSL winners, and two-time finalists, Quetta Gladiators. There isn’t a better way to start the tournament than by a match between two champion teams.

PSL 2021 Venue Details

Pakistan Super League 2021 was initially planned to be played across six different venues. The venues were Karachi, Lahore, Multan, Rawalpindi, and in addition, Peshawar. However, due to the Covid-19 measures, the Pakistan Cricket Board opted not to play the tournament across so many venues. Rather, they reduced the venues to only two, and those two include Karachi and Lahore.

So now, the first 20 group matches of the 2021 PSL will be played at the National Stadium, Karachi. The stadium recently hosted the first Test match between Pakistan and South Africa, which the home team won by 7 wickets. Secondly, the remaining matches, including all the knockout ones, will be played at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore. Furthermore, Gaddafi Stadium will also host all the three T20I matches of the Pakistan vs South Africa series.

One team dominated the other for four days. With nearly 400 runs to defend, and with the opposition decimated by absenteeism, it looked like only one result was possible. Surely.

But, as has been the case in a superb 2021 so far for Test cricket, West Indies, courtesy of one of the all-time great debuts by Kyle Mayers, pulled out all the stocks to achieve a memorable victory. As a result, Kraigg Brathwaite’s men travel to Dhaka full of confidence, as their opponents also have to recover from the physical and mental scars of Chattogram.

So, how do Bangladesh bounce back from that? Especially without their main man, Shakib Al Hasan? Bangladesh’s spin-first (and often only) strategy is looking one-dimensional and limited, as Mominul tried to keep faith in three finger spinners and a solitary seamer in the absence of Shakib on the final day at Chattogram. Questions continue to arise about Bangladesh’s ability to win on pitches that don’t spin miles, and that notion will be put to the test in a game they must win to avoid a harrowing series defeat.

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Bangladesh:

On most occasions, if you score a century and take eight wickets, you win player-of-the-match. That wasn’t the case for Mehidy Hasan Miraz, but he had a superb first Test nonetheless (103, 4/58, 7, 4/113).
After Shakib, Mushfiqur Rahim has the next-most runs at Shere Bangla Stadium in Tests (1,181, avg. 42.17). Mushfiq made two starts in the first Test (38 and 18), so he’ll want to build on those.
Can Tamim Iqbal bounce back after a poor first Test? He will be looking to improve on a career batting average of 34.50 vs West Indies.
Mominul Haque is coming off another home century. In fact, Mominul became the first Bangladeshi batsman to make 10 Test centuries. Also, he averages 51.75 in 10 Tests on this ground and 58 overall at home. Key player.
Liton Das looked in good touch in the first Test. He scored 38 and 69.
Taijul Islam enjoys bowling on this ground. He has 44 wickets to his name in eight Tests at an average of 24.02.

West Indies:

All eyes will be on Kyle Mayers. Heading into his Test debut with a First Class average of just 28, Mayers defied belief, scoring an unbelievable 210* to lead West Indies to one of their greatest wins.
Nkrumah Bonner was also a big positive for West Indies. He scored a patient 86 in the record-breaking run-chase.
Kraigg Brathwaite, who averaged just 13 in Bangladesh before the first Test, struck 76 and 20 in Chattogram. Overall, he averages 47.75 in nine Tests vs the Tigers, and the Windies will need him to perform.
Jomel Warrican has taken 15 wickets in three Tests in Bangladesh at an average of 25.73. He bowled nicely in the first Test of this series, taking a total of seven wickets.
What impact will Rakheem Cornwall have on what is expected to be a turning pitch? He took just two wickets in the Chattogram Test, but remains a key player for the Windies.

Stats and Facts

Mehidy Hasan Miraz was player of the match vs West Indies on this ground in 2018. He took incredible match figures of 12/117.
West Indies’ run-chase of 395 in the first Test was the highest-ever successful run chase in Asia.
Mayers and Bonner’s 216-run partnership in Chattogram was the highest partnership by a debut pair in 57 years.

Shakib Al Hasan is out of the Test with a thigh injury, which is a blow. Bangladesh could use this opportunity to bring in another specialist seamer to support Mustafizur Rahman, as Soumya Sarkar could come in for the also injured Shadman Islam.

The SBNS has supported spinners quite nicely over the past five years. After the first innings, the ball begins to take quite a bit of turn, making batting difficult for the rest of the match. The average first innings score in the past five years is 332, with five out of six teams winning the match after batting first.

Warm conditions in the 30-degree region is forecast throughout the Test. Also, the players may have to deal with hazy conditions and poor air quality, according to the forecast.

This man just doesn’t stop, does he?

James Anderson, at 38 years of age, produced an outstanding spell of bowling to help lead England to an emphatic win in the first Test against India at Chennai. Reverse swing was on offer as the Test progressed on an abrasive surface, but the manner that Anderson delivered with such venom and accuracy has been a hallmark of his career to date.

And what a career it has been. If a batsman plays out 20 years of international cricket, he/she will be (rightfully) praised and applauded. Anderson, a pace bowler made his debut way back in 2003, and has shown no signs of slowing down even after a massive 158 Tests – easily the most of any seamer in history. Incredible stuff that all fans, no matter who you support, should appreciate.

The inaugural winners of the Indian Premier League, Rajasthan Royals, have failed to replicate their performance of the first edition. They have had some good players in their squad over the years but they have failed as a team. They’ll go into the auction with Kumar Sangakkara the Director of Cricket and after releasing their last year’s skipper Steve Smith. They have a great core of players and have a great chance to build a very strong team for the upcoming editions of the IPL.

5. Umesh Yadav

Rajasthan has released quite a few pacers; domestic as well as overseas. They have only Jofra Archer, Karthik Tyagi, and Andrew Tye in their pace bowling department and Tye probably won’t start in the first 11. Umesh Yadav, in that case, can be a player they can look to pick. He can give good value with the new ball and they can use him as a powerplay bowler. Umesh was the highest wicket-taker in the powerplay in 2018-19 editions of the tournament with 18 wickets in 24 innings at an economy of 7.46.

He is experienced, has good pace, and can be a good domestic option for the Royals considering their need for the pacers.

4. Krishnappa Gowtham

Everyone was surprised when RR released Gowtham after the 2019 edition of the tournament, as he is a utility player with his off-spin bowling and his ability to tonk the ball lower down the order. Also, Rajasthan doesn’t have an off-spinner in their squad. Despite having players like Rahul Tewatia, Gowtham can be a good choice for Rajasthan.

He has a career strike of 169.09 in the IPL after 19 innings and 159.24 in T20s and he has 41 wickets in 62 games at an economy of 7.60 in T20s with the ball. With the all-round value that Gowtham brings to the table, we can see him back to his previous franchise in IPL 2021.

3. Lukman Meriwala

Rajasthan Royals are known to pick and nurture young uncapped players from India. Many of the current stars of the IPL started their journey in Rajasthan Royals. So, given their need for pace bowlers and their history of picking young players, Rajasthan Royals can go for Lukman Meriwala, the left-arm pacer from Baroda.

The 27-year-old speedster has some great numbers in the domestic arena. He has 72 wickets in 44 T20s at an economy of 6.72 and a strike-rate of 12.9. Also, he was the second-highest wicket-taker of the recently concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) with 15 wickets in 5 games. Meriwala can be a great pick for the Royals for this season and the upcoming seasons as well.

2. Moeen Ali

Rajasthan has quite a few options for the top order and the lower middle order but they don’t have someone good and experienced to bat at the number 4 spot. Moeen Ali can be the perfect pick for them. He can bat at number 4, is a good player of spin bowling, and can also give 4 overs to the side with his off-spin bowling.

He has 3513 runs in 167 T20 games striking at 140.18 at an average of 24.73 and has 110 wickets at an economy of 7.68. Overall Moeen Ali can act as the link between the explosive top and middle-order of the Royals and he also brings the off-spin to their arsenal which they lack at the moment.

1. Mark Wood

The Rajasthan Royals have almost all base covered in the batting department. They have a mix of experienced players and youngsters to form the batting unit.

However, one area where they lack is a good overseas pacer to accompany Jofra Archer. Karthik Tyagi is young while Andrew Tye isn’t the same as he used to be. Mark Wood can be the last piece of the puzzle for them.

Wood is a pacy, hit-the-deck bowler who can trouble any batsman with his bowling. He can bowl with the new ball as well as in the death overs and him paired with Archer can be a lethal combination for the Royals.

The English pacer can boost the bowling attack of RR as we have already witnessed something like that from DC in IPL 2020 with Rabada and Nortje in their bowling line-up. Mark Wood has the potential to be a great pick for them in this auction.

CSA Expresses Disappointment on Australia’s Decision Over South Africa Test Tour | Cricket South Africa expresses disappointment

The effects of the pandemic on the sports industry can still be felt in cricket as Cricket Australia (CA) announced that they are pulling out of the South Africa Test tour due to virus concerns. The said tour is supposed to be held this month and in March.

The news wasn’t taken lightly by Cricket South Africa (CSA) and many fans went on Twitter to express their thoughts on the matter. Many were questioning the fact that CA still went on tour to England last year to play despite the COVID 19 outbreak, and here they are ditching the South Africa tour.

Why Australia Has Come to This Decision

CSA Expresses Disappointment on Australia’s Decision Over South Africa Test Tour | Cricket South Africa expresses disappointment — Nick Hockley said CA offered option to CSA to host series in Australia.

The main reason why CA had to pull out of the Test tour is the latest outbreak in South Africa. CA said that they were left with no choice because of the current situation in the country. CA interim CEO Nick Hockley said that their decision was not been made lightly.

“Due to the public health situation in South Africa, which includes a second wave and new variant of the virus, and following extensive due diligence with medical experts, it has become clear that traveling from Australia to South Africa at this current time poses an unacceptable level of health and safety risk to our players, support staff and the community.”

He further explained the reason they have behind their decision and said, “I don’t think Cricket South Africa could have done any more in terms of biosecurity arrangements. Firstly, South Africa, very sadly, hit the peak of their second [coronavirus] wave.

“And secondly, they have got the more virulent strain which there is still lots of unknowns around that. As we worked through the residual risk and also some questions and challenges [around] if we were to get a case, how and when we could get our players back home, putting the health and safety number one, we were left with no option.”

Hockley also mentioned that they also offered to host the series in Australia. “We did offer to host the series here, but Cricket South Africa made that very clear that they have got lots of other commitments and with quarantine periods and the like, that just wasn’t feasible.”

CSA’s Response to the Situation

Aside from the fans who didn’t take this lightly, CSA itself expressed the disappointment that they have. CSA’s director, Graeme Smith, was frustrated about this. He said, “This was set to be the longest tour in a bio-secure environment (BSE), comprising a three-match Test series that was scheduled to begin with Australia’s arrival later in the month. And so, to be informed about the CA decision at the eleventh hour is frustrating.”

CSA’s medical officer, Shuaib Manjra also talked about the measures that they had in place if the tour wasn’t canceled. Manjra said, “The protocols we had proposed to CA were unprecedented. Firstly we had agreed that our own Proteas team would enter the BSE 14 days before the arrival of the Australian team, thus altering their planning during the current tour of Pakistan. Among some of the other key arrangements made were that all four areas (two hotels and two venues) had a protocol to implement a strict BSE with no contact with anybody outside this area.

“We subsequently agreed to two separate BSEs and had granted Australia full and exclusive use of the Irene Country Lodge [near Centurion], which we shared with Sri Lanka, with a minimum staff present on site. In terms of the arrangements, the Proteas were to move to a separate hotel altogether.

“Furthermore, all hotel staff, match officials, and even bus drivers were to enter the BSE 14 days before Australia’s arrival. Besides, CSA had also committed to importing an Australian tracking system at great cost to ensure proper tracking of close contacts in the event of a positive test. The touring team was also going to be granted VIP access through the airports, after government intervention to ensure this privilege.”

CSA’s acting chief executive also expressed his thoughts on the matter. Pholetsi Moseki said It is indeed sad that after all the engagements and efforts made to ensure a secure visit by our Australian counterparts, the tour has been derailed. CSA has incurred significant costs related to the planning stages and the cancellation of the tour represents a serious financial loss. In this challenging period for cricket and its member countries, we believe the stance taken by CA is regrettable and will have a serious impact on the sustainability of the less wealthy cricket-playing nations.”

Bangladesh dominated for four days. On the back of Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s fine Test century and bag of wickets, no one could have imagined that, in the depths of 59/3 on a turning pitch, the West Indies would go on to achieve the highest-ever run-chase in Asia.

A few weeks after India pulled off a superb victory in Australia, West Indies produced another great advertisement for Test cricket in what’s been a brilliant 2021 so far for the game’s longest format. And it’s down to dream debuts, with one an absolute standout in the history of the game. Kyle Mayers, who was somewhat a surprise selection over the likes of Raimon Reiffer, played the innings of a lifetime. His 210*, after spending plenty of time out in the field throughout the Test, was as unbelievable as it was breathtaking, after Nkrumah Bonner fought hard for his 86 to keep Bangladesh at bay.

It is incredible that a player with a century and eight wickets to his name finishes on the losing side, as well as without the player-of-the-match award. It could have been so different for Mehidy Hasan Miraz had a catch at slip been taken off his bowling when Mayers was on 49, but the day – and Test – truly belongs to one man.

In a superb victory for West Indies lies a harrowing feeling for Bangladesh. The match was theirs to lose, as a Tigers win or draw seemed the two most realistic results heading into day five.

In the end, their strategy of overloading their attack with finger spin and a not-fully-fit Shakib Al Hasan backfired badly.

But, this is a day to praise the Windies. Great days are few-and-far between now, but this is one to savour. A superb victory, led by a superb debut display.
