  • Joe Root averages over 50 in five Tests in South Africa.
  • Ben Stokes returns to the ground where made an incredible 258 in 2016.
  • Kagiso Rabada at Newlands: 5 matches, 30 wickets, avg. 20.56.
  • The last Test at Newlands was a very high-scoring draw.

Key to a South Africa win

An inspired effort by Quinton de Kock took South Africa to respectability in the first innings of the first Test. However, more will be required of the top order in what is expected to be good batting conditions. Can they grind the England bowlers down, of which QdK could then build on further?

Also, it was an inspired effort by South Africa’s seamers last time out. Anrich Nortje highlighted his potential, with Kagiso Rabada coming into the game at the crunch moment: the second new ball on the fourth and final day. If the two quick men along with Vernon Philander can get through England’s top order, a great opportunity awaits.

England’s concentration wavered after extended periods in Centurion. Spurts of brilliance were offset by poor moments, of which the England batsmen need to avoid at Newlands. Who will go on to make a big score, especially in the absence of the capable Rory Burns?

Also, England’s bowlers need to find ways to take 20 wickets. Jofra Archer is in doubt, which puts significant onus on Anderson, Broad and Curran to find enough movement – with new and old ball – to test South Africa’s middle order as soon as possible.

The fifth-ranked Test team at home to the second-ranked side should have a competitive feel to it. When you consider New Zealand’s superb run over the past 18-24 months, this was their chance to confirm their status as one of New Zealand’s best ever Test teams.

They may still hold that title by the time this team disbands, but Australia have dominated. Worse, illness has been spreading through the New Zealand camp over the past couple of days, with Kane Williamson ruled out.

Also, this Test could see interruptions, with smoke still hanging over Sydney from horrible bushfires, as well as some welcome rain forecast for Monday and Tuesday.

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

  • New Zealand haven’t played a Test in Sydney since 1985. So, can Ross Taylor lead the way with a big display?
  • David Warner has an incredible strike rate of 99.48 in seven Tests at the SCG. He has compiled 576 runs at 57.60.
  • Steve Smith played a fighting knock in Melbourne. In even better news for Australia, he enjoys playing in Sydney: 548 runs in six Tests at 68.50.
  • Marnus Labuschagne now makes up a very key part of Australia’s top four. He was the only player to score 1,000+ Test runs in 2019.
  • Tom Blundell was New Zealand’s shining light at MCG. His onside play was particularly impressive in his second-innings century.
  • After being at risk of not playing in the Boxing Day Test, Travis Head responded with a century.
  • Will Somerville is a strong chance of playing this Test. He played five FC games for NSW at SCG, where he took 23 wickets 20.69. He is also a handy lower-order batsman.
  • James Pattinson vs New Zealand: 4 Tests, 26 wickets, avg. 16.27.
  • Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc have taken 19 wickets between them this series.
  • Neil Wagner has had a superb series in what has been a tough outing for New Zealand. He has 14 wickets in two Tests, including Steve Smith four times and David Warner three times.
  • Surprisingly, Nathan Lyon has a poor record at the SCG: 26 wickets in 8 Tests at 47.68.

Key to an Australia win

Australia’s bowlers have been relentless. The Black Caps’ batsmen have had little chance to breathe throughout the series, with the seamers maintaining pressure from both ends. Then, later in the innings, Lyon can hold up an end (and find turn) with the seamers rotating nicely.

Also, will it be another prolific game for Australia’s top six? The top four have generally set a platform this season, and if they do so again, it might be too much for New Zealand to come back from. Keep an eye out for David Warner, Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith as a strong trio.

  • Josh Philippe has been under-par since his 81 in the first game. However, he scored 52 at Marvel Stadium on his last visit.
  • Moises Henriques is the highest scorer in Renegades-Sixers matches: 275 runs at avg. 34.38. Aaron Finch (two half-centuries in a row in BBL09) is next on the list with 210 runs at 35.00.
  • Kane Richardson has taken 18 wickets in his last eight games at Marvel Stadium. Also, he has six wickets in four games vs Sixers.
  • Ben Manenti to get a run? Sean Abbott is out with a side-strain, and Manenti won man-of-the-match in the corresponding game last season.
  • Beau Webster has been a shining light so far for Melbourne Renegades in BBL09: 131 runs in four matches at avg. 131, SR: 155.95.
  • Lloyd Pope took 3/23 last game. He could be a handful on the slow Marvel Stadium track.

It could very well be the case again as they take on Melbourne Stars, one of the favourites for the BBL09 Title. The Stars have enjoyed a strong start to their campaign, leaving Launceston last time out with two points in a rain-affected match.

This one could genuinely go either way in the first game at Spotless Stadium in BBL09.

  • Callum Ferguson is unstoppable at the moment. The current gold-cap holder has scores of 73*, 4 (poor LBW decision), 27*, 52 and 73 so far in BBL09.
  • Marcus Stoinis was man-of-the-match in the Stars’ last meeting vs Thunder.

Key to a Melbourne Stars win

Melbourne Stars’ possible attack looks a good one. Dale Steyn, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Haris Rauf, Daniel Worrall, Adam Zampa and Glenn Maxwell have it in them to maintain pressure on the Thunder right throughout the innings. Can they get the better of the Thunder top three?

The Sydney Thunder spinners have been impressive so far in BBL09. Chris Green, Jono Cook and Arjun Nair have worked well as a unit so far in the tournament.
