Ashes 2019: England v Australia 1st Test Player Ratings

Ashes 2019: England v Australia 1st Test Player Ratings. ENG vs AUS 1st Test Player Ratings

“Is this the most intimidating ground in world cricket?”, asked a UK journalist. “This one? I could name 15”, replied Tim Paine.

At 122/8 on the first day, Paine’s statement certainly didn’t look vindicated. The Barmy Army was loving it. Wickets were tumbling as often as England fans booed, with Australia’s batting not holding up to the demands of Test Cricket on the opening day. This was except for Steve Smith, of course, who might have tempted every Australian fan to head to Canberra immediately and campaign for the man to be the new Prime Minister.

England v Australia 1st Test Player Ratings: Smith for PM.

However, you can back England to bounce back because they messed up badly here. James Anderson wasn’t fit. Moeen Ali is not a first-choice specialist spinner. Their top four still has an air of vulnerability about it, despite Burns’ fine Test. Among other concerns, these are their biggest, with England surrendering an Ashes lead thanks to their sixth loss in seven Ashes Tests. Worth booing.

Each player from this Test will be rated out of 10. As always, this is a light-hearted take on the action.

Umpires

Before we take a look at the players, you have to analyse the second-most talked about participants behind Steve Smith. If you feel like you are having a bad time at work, spare a thought for the only two guys in white with no numbers on their back.

Yes, there is always pressure on umpires, but Aleem Dar and Joel Wilson didn’t do justice to their selections in a big Test. All-in-all, there were 15 errors in the match, which is too much. Thank goodness for DRS. Eyesight company Specsavers will be chasing have two very good leads to join their customer portfolio. 1

England v Australia 1st Test Player Ratings: Unfortunate photo…

England

Rory Burns: Burns looked easy meat after the Ireland Test. After all, he seemed vulnerable on both edges. However, he produced a fighting first innings century (rode his luck at times) that put England well in the game here. The challenge will be to back this effort up at Lord’s. 8

Jason Roy: If someone told you that Jason Roy would spend more time batting than James Anderson bowled, you would have thought England would win by 500. In the end, Roy tried to hit 500 off one ball which got him bowled. Awful shot in the context – am still far from convinced that he is the right man to open for England in Tests. 2

England v Australia 1st Test Player Ratings: Easier to explain than Roy’s dismissal

Joe Root: This was more of the same from Joe Root in an Ashes Test. Spent hours in the fielding trying to work out how to dismiss Steve Smith, before getting dismissed after making starts. The England physio is now said to be racing the clock to have Root’s arms in good condition for the next Test after so many calls for a review. 6

Joe Denly: Reviewed his Test career in the second innings. Joe was unsure whether he hit a cricket ball, much like how many England fans are unsure of how he is in the side. 3

Jos Buttler: Will want to delete this game out of his memory like Nick Compton deletes tweets. Dismissed cheaply twice by Pat Cummins. He is one that has to step up for England. 1

Ben Stokes: Solid first innings fifty. England would want more control from Stokes with the ball, given he has an important role to play as an all-rounder. 6

Jonny Bairstow: One cost of England’s ODI rise. One of England’s best Test batsmen four years ago now can’t buy a run in the format. 3

Moeen Ali: How rude of Australia to play with a 12th man. The difference in quality between the two offspinners was as significant as it was crucial. Moeen surely misses out in the next Test, despite his good last 12 months with the ball in Tests. This is unless England choose to pick him as the second spinner. 2

England v Australia 1st Test Player Ratings: Moeen struggled.

Chris Woakes: Too good to be batting down at nine. Also, it was alarming why he didn’t bowl more in the second innings after a solid outing on the first day. 7

Stuart Broad: Broad can tell his grandkids one day that he got Steve Smith out in this Test. He doesn’t have to tell them for how much, though. A quality five-wicket haul on the first day to go past 450 wickets in the process. Also involved in a big partnership with Chris Woakes in the first innings. 8

James Anderson: Bowled four overs but still had more of an impact than some of his teammates. Such was England’s match. Should never have played this Test. Enter Jofra Archer. N/A

Australia

David Warner: Tim Paine owes David Warner a beer for putting him on the boundary. His best moment was showing his empty pockets to the England fans giving him stick. Australia will be after more from Warner with the bat. 2

England v Australia 1st Test Player Ratings: Fun from Warner

Cameron Bancroft: Excellent in the field, but not so much with the bat on his Test return. Should get another chance at Lord’s and needs to make it count. 3

Usman Khawaja: Khawaja could score 15 runs and have that innings talked about for hours to come, such is his pleasing strokeplay. If he can get past his starts in this series, Australia will benefit significantly. 5

Steve Smith: This bloke could be in doubt for the Lord’s Test after carrying the batting lineup for nearly the entire Test. Indeed, Steve Smith had a number of outstanding performances before Cape Town. However, this was the best, holding the fort in challenging circumstances in the first innings to get Australia to a competitive score. He then followed it up with another century in the second. Whether you believe he is the best batsman since Bradman or not, the man should be praised for his hunger for runs. After all, England fans appreciated it too, rating his performance a 10. What a return to Test Cricket. 10

Ashes 2019: England v Australia 1st Test Player Ratings. ENG vs AUS 1st Test Player Ratings
England v Australia 1st Test Player Ratings: 10s all-round!

Travis Head: One of Australia’s solid performers. He was under pressure twice and both times he combined with Smith for crucial runs. The key for Head will be to build on his starts. 7

Matthew Wade: This man knocked the door down with sheer weight of runs across formats domestically and for Australia A. He was rewarded with a Test recall ahead of another bowling option, and scored an excellent second-innings century. One area England will look at is how his head can fall far to the offside, but Wade has stamped his claim early. 8

Tim Paine: Skipper Paine scoffed at the thought of Edgbaston being the most intimidating ground in the world. It was vindicated. But not before a first innings dismissal that Jason Roy would have been proud of. Some second innings runs, good catches and led the team well. 6

Pat Cummins: Didn’t start the Test particularly well but finished it brilliantly. Picked up four second innings wickets to go past 100 in Tests. 8

James Pattinson: A very solid return to Test Cricket. Pattinson will be better for the run, particularly given his short ball wasn’t as effective on a slow pitch. 7

Peter Siddle: You must perform well when one of Josh Hazlewood or Mitchell Starc are left out for you. Siddle contributed so well for Australia, starting with his 44 on the first day. Very steady with the ball and could have had more wickets. Surely can’t be left out of the next Test. 7.5

Nathan Lyon: ‘Gaz’. Australia’s most successful off-spinner. He kept it simple, focusing on challenging the England batsmen on a turning pitch. The world’s current-best Test spinner finished with nine wickets and went past 350 in his career. 9

——

A comprehensive win in the end from Australia to end the Edgbaston hoodoo. But, if we cast our minds back to 2015, results swung significantly with no close game.

England will make changes. They will be out to prove a point at Lord’s, and will be difficult to beat especially if they win the toss. The challenge has been set.

West Indies v India 3rd T20I Preview Dream11

West Indies v India 3rd T20I Preview Dream11. WI vs IND 3rd T20I Preview Dream11 Prediction 6th August 2019

‘Scrappy’ is the term that can be used to describe the first T20I. ‘Better’ can be used to describe the second. ‘Experimentation’ is the theme of the third.

With the series now over, both West Indies and India can look towards giving bench players a run as part of their preparations for next year’s World T20. Both sides have been far from perfect in this series, which gives an opportunity for players to come in and make a mark, with the Indians looking to land their sixth straight win over West Indies in T20Is.

Key to a West Indies win

The powerplay has been a source of disappointment for West Indies in this series. While it is very difficult to do worse than losing five wickets as they did in the first T20I, their very slow start last time out put them on the back foot. This time, the top order needs to put India on the back foot, setting the innings up for success in the middle and death over periods.

The positive though has been their bowling. Their three frontline bowlers – Cottrell, Thomas and Narine – went for less than seven an over combined in the second T20I, which this time requires more support from the likes of Keemo Paul and Carlos Brathwaite. India’s top three, regardless of personnel, will be key wickets given that their middle order remains a little shaky.

West Indies v India 3rd T20I: Windies need Pollard’s T20 experience to come to the fore

Key to an India win

India’s top three, led by Rohit Sharma, set the innings up nicely in the second T20I. However, their finishing is an area for improvement after scoring just eight an over in the final five overs, with the selectors’ insistence on Manish Pandey at five not paying off so far. This game is a great chance to open with KL Rahul, with the prolific T20 player key in setting the innings up for India.

However, Virat Kohli and company will be pleased with how the bowlers have performed. With first-team players rested, various bowlers have been presented with the opportunity to make a mark. Washington Sundar has been superb in stifling the Windies, along with Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Navdeep Saini throughout the series. Whoever is given a chance this time around will be tasked again with hurting the Windies in the powerplay period, of which the follow-up bowlers can build on.

Pitch and conditions

Thunderstorms are predicted to occur just before the start of play in Guyana. As a result, conditions could be similar to what was faced in Lauderhill.

Possible Playing 11

West Indies could look at bringing in the likes of John Campbell, Fabien Allen and Anthony Bramble for an opportunity.

West Indies: 1. Evin Lewis/John Campbell, 2. Sunil Narine, 3. Nicholas Pooran (wk), 4. Shimron Hetmyer, 5. Keiron Pollard, 6. Rovman Powell, 7. Carlos Brathwaite, 8. Keemo Paul, 9. Fabian Allen, 10. Sheldon Cottrell, 11. Oshane Thomas

India could look at a host of changes. KL Rahul could come in to open at the expense of Shikhar Dhawan. The likes of Deepak, Rahul Chahar and Shreyas Iyer could also get a chance.

India: 1. Rohit Sharma, 2. KL Rahul, 3. Virat Kohli (c), 4. Rishabh Pant (wk), 5. Manish Pandey/Shreyas Iyer, 6. Krunal Pandya, 7. Ravindra Jadeja/Washington Sundar, 8. Navdeep Saini, 9. Bhuvneshwar Kumar/Deepak Chahar, 10. Khaleel Ahmed, 11. Rahul Chahar

Two teams, who both finished their respective World Cup campaigns with less than what they originally wanted, begin life after the ODI showpiece. A dose of T20Is kicks off India’s tour of West Indies, with both sides looking for redemption of sorts.

West Indies won’t only look to the right the wrong of a very disappointing World Cup campaign – there is also the small matter of a 3-0 defeat in a T20I series India last November. The power they possess and fearless cricket they play is certainly suited to this format, and can look to pick up momentum ahead of the World T20 in just over a year’s time.

So much attention in India has been on a ‘rift’ between Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma that the Indian skipper has vehemently denied. Focus needs to shift now to a series that can help India climb the rankings, building their own form with the World T20 next year. A mix of youth and experience underpins India’s squad, who will be hoping for better luck than their last visit to Lauderhill.

Key to a West Indies win

West Indies welcome back some big names to their T20I squad. Sunil Narine and Kieron Pollard, who possess so much T20 experience, return to try boost the form of the Windies. Apart from hoping that they will consistently be around until the World T20, the Windies require solid all-round efforts from these two, along with hard-hitting potential such as Evin Lewis, Nicholas Pooran and Shimron Hetmyer in getting the Windies to a big total.

Also, much was made about West Indies’ bowling in the recent World Cup. They were often one dimensional, lacking the variety required to get the better of batting lineups. The return of Sunil Narine can provide control and wicket-taking threat, along with the likes of Sheldon Cottrell and Oshane Thomas who can create opportunities up front. Indeed, the key for Windies would be to get better of India’s three big guns, picking up wickets regularly to limit India’s impact at the death.

West Indies v India 1st T20I: Kieron Pollard plays a lot of T20, and is now back for West Indies

Key to an India win

Some of India’s finest IPL performers will take the field in Lauderhill in an attempt to deliver victory for their national side. The likes of Khaleel Ahmed, Rahul Chahar, Navdeep Saini and Deepak Chahar offered plenty of value with the ball in IPL 2019, and given they all could get a chance throughout the series, the key will be to make a big impression by limiting the Windies’ hard-hitting approach. With frontline bowlers such as Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav rested, this is a chance to make a mark.

Also, plenty rests on Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as often the case. However, India need in-form players in their middle order to take their limited-overs game to the next level. KL Rahul is a player that can fire with the chance to play with freedom, and he will be tasked with getting India into a position where they can launch. He and Rishabh Pant will be out to make a big impression and outplay the Windies’ middle order.

West Indies v India 1st T20I: Shikhar Dhawan is back for India

Pitch and Conditions

This T20I will begin at 10:30am local time in Lauderhill. Some showers and thunderstorms are expected throughout the early afternoon which could impact this game. The pitch in Florida is usually good for batting, with Bangladesh making two 170+ scores against West Indies in 2018.

Possible Playing 11

John Campbell will likely open with Evin Lewis. Also, Kharry Pierre could play if the Windies feel extra spin is needed with Sunil Narine also providing a spin option. Andre Russell has been ruled out of the first two T20Is at least.

West Indies: 1. Evin Lewis, 2. John Campbell, 3. Shimron Hetmyer, 4. Nicholas Pooran (wk), 5. Kieron Pollard, 6. Rovman Powell, 7. Sunil Narine, 8. Carlos Brathwaite (c), 9. Keemo Paul, 10. Sheldon Cottrell, 11. Oshane Thomas

The likes of Shreyas Iyer and Manish Pandey are a chance of selection after strong IPL 2019 campaigns. However, they are both top order players, so placing either in the middle could be a risk. So, both Krunal Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja could play in the middle-late order with India to then play four frontline seam bowlers.

India: 1. Rohit Sharma, 2. Shikhar Dhawan, 3. Virat Kohli (c), 4. KL Rahul, 5. Rishabh Pant (wk), 6. Krunal Pandya/Shreyas Iyer, 7. Ravindra Jadeja, 8. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 9. Deepak Chahar, 10. Navdeep Saini, 11. Khaleel Ahmed

Stats and Facts

  • India beat West Indies 3-0 in a T20I series in November 2018.
  • West Indies won the last T20I meeting vs India in Lauderhill – a thrilling one-run win in 2016.
  • Virat Kohli averages 50+ in all three formats.
  • Sunil Narine was last included in a Windies squad in 2017.
  • West Indies are ranked ninth in T20Is. India are fifth.

Match Prediction

An exciting game is in prospect between two sides who could well have a say in next year’s World T20.

A high-scoring game is possible if the weather permits. Both sides possess good power but I think India’s experience just gives them an edge.

Ashes 2019 1st Test: England vs Australia Preview Dream11

Ashes 2019 1st Test: England vs Australia Preview Dream11 Prediction. ENG vs AUS 1st Test Preview Dream11 Prediction August 1 2019

The World Test Championship has a high-profile start. Irrespective of the fragile batting lineups, the 2019 Ashes promises to be one of the closest fought in recent times, with the last really competitive Ashes series set way back in 2009.

Five Ashes series have been played since. Only once has the away side won, with 2010/11 being the only such instance since 2001. This makes England favourites to regain the Ashes in 2019. Though their batting was a horror show against Ireland recently (Jack Leach won man of the match after bowling just three overs for 26), England’s bowling in these conditions with the duke ball presents a significant threat. Can they make a mark right away?

Australia, like England, have made some big selection calls along with their decision to ban reading UK tabloids. Cameron Bancroft returns to open, and has been warned by Joe Denly to expect some sandpaper stick from the crowd. Mitchell Starc, one of Australia’s premier fast men, is on the verge of being left out. Matthew Wade is to slot in at six. All this change requires a reminder that David Warner and Steve Smith are also back in Test Cricket, with the task of leading an Australian batting lineup that has big questions to answer over the coming weeks. Can the Aussies overcome a horrible Edgbaston record and take a 1-0 series lead?

Also read: Will Steve Smith top the Ashes 2019 runscoring chart?

Key to an England win

James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes are set to lead England’s quest for victory. Uncertain on batting combinations, it is the bowlers who will hold the key after saving England’s blushes at Lord’s recently against Ireland. David Warner and Steve Smith will be key wickets given Bancroft’s return and Usman Khawaja’s form and injury worries, then paving the way to target a middle-lower order that could be the ultimate difference in this series.

But, this is not to say England’s batting doesn’t need to contribute to the cause. Their top order looks very fragile. Rory Burns and Jason Roy are cause for concern given their technical shortcomings. But, they can put doubts to rest with solid starts against Australia’s own potent bowlers, setting a platform for number three Joe Root to make his mark on the match. With Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler back, England will want to ensure they have something to build on rather than having to build England up from a mess.

Ashes 2019 1st Test: Much rests on Joe Root.

Key to an Australia win

England’s top order is fragile so an opportunity awaits Australia. James Pattinson’s return to Australian colours is cause for excitement. Still bowling with excellent rhythm and pace after numerous injuries, Pattinson holds a significant key to success. Indeed, keeping Mitchell Starc out of the side can be cause for some pressure, as he will have to justify the selectors’ faith in him. His battle against England’s top order will be one to watch out for, along with Josh Hazlewood (if picked), Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon, who will be tasked with outbowling their English counterparts.

Also, can Australia make a mark with the bat and raise confidence early? David Warner has been prolific in white-ball cricket in 2019, but this is a different test altogether. Australia will hope for his impetus early, in combination with Bancroft’s patient approach that can wear England down. Usman Khawaja also needs to perform given the likes of Kurtis Patterson were incredibly unlucky to miss the squad, coupled with the fact he is Australia’s number three in an Ashes series. But, Steve Smith holds the biggest key for Australia as the glue that can hold this side together to get enough runs on the board with the likes of Travis Head, Matt Wade and Tim Paine then needed to contribute runs in the middle order.

Pitch and Conditions

Tim Paine was surprised at the Edgbaston pitch, which gave a darker look that coach Justin Langer doesn’t expect to turn green. It could very well be best for batting on days two and three, which makes it an interesting decision for whoever wins the toss. The forecast for the Test is for some showers to fall – possibly each day.

England have named their XI. Jofra Archer will have to wait to make his debut, with Joe Denly to bat at four. Sam Curran also misses out.

England: 1. Rory Burns, 2. Jason Roy, 3. Joe Root (c), 4. Joe Denly, 5. Ben Stokes, 6. Jonny Bairstow (wk), 7. Jos Buttler, 8. Moeen Ali, 9. Chris Woakes, 10. Stuart Broad, 11. James Anderson

There have been some big calls in the Australia camp, with Mitchell Starc set to be left out. Cameron Bancroft will open alongside David Warner, with Matthew Wade to bat at six. Also, Peter Siddle is a chance of playing ahead of Josh Hazlewood.

Australia: 1. David Warner, 2. Cameron Bancroft, 3. Usman Khawaja, 4. Steve Smith, 5. Travis Head, 6. Matthew Wade, 7. Tim Paine (c & wk), 8. Pat Cummins, 9. James Pattinson, 10. Nathan Lyon, 11. Josh Hazlewood/Peter Siddle

Stats and Facts

  • Australia have not won a single match in Edgbaston in any format since 2001. The latest defeat was in the World Cup Semi Final. In contrast, England have won 11 straight in all formats at the venue.
  • England is the last side to win an Ashes series away from home. They achieved this in 2010/11. Australia haven’t won in England since 2001.
  • Cameron Bancroft, Steve Smith and David Warner will play their first Test since March 2018.

Match Prediction

The first match of the series has plenty of uncertainty about it. England’s top order is fragile, which has forced Joe Root to bat at three. Australia have had their struggles in the past against the duke ball.

This has the makings for a bowler-dominated series, and it could start right away. I think England will edge this one out given their strong record at Edgbaston, but Australia could well be in business if they force James Anderson to bowl a lot of overs with his recent injury worries.

Women’s Ashes: ENGW v AUSW 3rd T20I Preview Dream11. England Women vs Australia Women 3rd T20I Preview Dream11 Prediction July 31st 2019

Preview written by Aaron Murphy

Even Australian captain Meg Lanning can’t believe the 12-2 scoreline going into the third and final T20I in Bristol on Wednesday: “It does surprise me a little bit … but it speaks volumes for how much our team has developed over the last six months and potentially how important our professional setup is back home.”

Neither country has completed an Ashes series with fewer than four points since the introduction of the multi-format series, so it seems only fitting that a team that has been demolishing records along the way – be it Ellyse Perry’s 7/22 or Meg Lanning’s 133* – condemns England to their worst result ever.

Key to an England win

England have had few opportunities gifted to them by their professional and classy opposition. But, when they have had the chance to take control, they have handed it back tamely. Tammy Beaumont threw her wicket away within an over of being dropped by Beth Mooney, while they failed to take a single wicket after restricting Australia’s chase to 35 for 3.

The gulf in quality continues to widen since the last 50-over World Cup. England will no doubt be throwing absolutely everything they have left at this final T20I, though morale is said to be mortally deficient after weeks of bruising defeats. It is more evident than ever that England will need to be on their game for the full 40 overs to take this one out.

Key to an Australia win

Australia haven’t let their guards down – bar the first portion of their chase in the second T20I – so it’s hard to envisage them doing so here. They have been relentless, focused on tight bowling and fielding, with their incredible batting depth getting them out of any trouble they may find themselves in.

Possible Playing 11

England may be tempted to give a cap to Essex’s Mady Villiers in a desperate search for victory. Comments from Australian coach Matthew Mott suggest they won’t be relenting when it comes to the final match of the tour.

England: 1. Danielle Wyatt, 2. Amy Jones (wk), 3. Tammy Beaumont, 4. Nat Sciver, 5. Heather Knight (c), 6. Lauren Winfield, 7. Katherine Brunt, 8. Georgia Elwiss, 9. Sophie Ecclestone, 10. Laura Marsh, 11. Kate Cross

Australia: 1. Alyssa Healy (wk), 2. Beth Mooney, 3. Meg Lanning (c), 4. Ash Gardner, 5. Ellyse Perry, 6. Rachael Haynes, 7. Sophie Molineux, 8. Jess Jonassen, 9. Georgia Wareham, 10. Delissa Kimmince, 11. Megan Schutt

Stats and Facts

  • The average first innings WT20I score at Bristol is 150.
  • Four of the last five women’s limited overs matches at Bristol have been won by the team chasing.
  • Heather Knight has reached 20 just once this Ashes series.
  • Meg Lanning has scored 333 runs in T20Is against England since being last dismissed back in 2016.
  • Ellyse Perry is the first and only player – male or female – to have registered the 1000 run-100 wicket double in T20Is.
  • Perry vs Amy Jones in Ashes 2019: 25 balls, 5 runs scored, 4 wickets.

Match Prediction

England almost had Australia on the ropes in game two and still lost comprehensively. Despite my best efforts to picture England salvaging their first limited overs victory, it is likely going to require some kind of superhuman effort from one or more of the Lionesses – something that has so far escaped them across six matches.

Sri Lanka v Bangladesh 3rd ODI Preview Dream11

Sri Lanka v Bangladesh 3rd ODI Preview Dream11. SL vs BAN 3rd ODI Preview Dream11 Prediction 31st July 2019

A series highlighted by Lasith Malinga’s amazing farewell needed an excellent second ODI to capture worldwide attention. It wasn’t the case, with Bangladesh surrendering to hand Sri Lanka their first ODI series win at home in 44 months.

Indeed, it was the second straight clinical performance from Sri Lanka, who will now celebrate Nuwan Kulasekara’s career. Recent form is a welcome change from the very barren run since the beginning of 2017, where they had 12 wins from 54 completed ODIs at one point. The win against England in the World Cup has created a bit of spark, and they have the chance to continue the winning feeling.

On the other hand, one gets the feeling Tamim Iqbal won’t volunteer to be Bangladesh captain full time once Mashrafe Mortaza retires. The fill-in skipper has often looked overwhelmed, searching for ideas as he and his bowlers struggle for form. Can the Tigers turn it around and end this series on a high?

Key to a Sri Lanka win

Ripping through Bangladesh’s top order has been a key theme this series. No Lasith Malinga meant no problem for Dimuth Karunaratne’s men in the second ODI, scything through Bangladesh, held up only by Mushfiqur Rahim and Mehidy Hasan Miraz. The template is set for consistent bowling against a Bangladesh lineup susceptible to losing regular wickets in the absence of Shakib Al Hasan, with the likes of Nuwan Pradeep, Akila Dananjaya and Isuru Udana tasked with inflicting more damage.

Also, how good was it to see Avishka Fernando in full flow? He wowed viewers with an array of drives and pulls that confirmed why he’s one player to watch after a superb World Cup campaign. With Kusal Perera, Kusal Mendis and Angelo Mathews also enjoying life against Bangladesh’s bowling, Sri Lanka can look forward to building another strong total.

Sri Lanka v Bangladesh 3rd ODI: Avishka Fernando is playing beautifully.

Key to a Bangladesh win

Tamim Iqbal has been out bowled in his last six innings. His recent form has been a far cry from what he showed in 2018, where he was Bangladesh’s second leading run-scorer. If Bangladesh are to salvage pride, Tamim and Soumya Sarkar need to provide a strong start that the stuttering middle order can play off. With Mushfiqur Rahim, Sabbir Rahman and Mehidy Hasan Miraz all batting well, Bangladesh desperately need more from their top three and Mahmudullah.

“The way we bowled today, I doubt if even 300 would have been enough,” said Tamim after the second match. Mustafizur Rahman, despite his fine ODI record, needs to be delivering more in the early overs to get his side on the front foot. Also, this could be the time for Taskin Ahmed to be given a run, with the freedom to bowl as quickly as he can to create some impact for a side struggling. Early wickets are key to halt progress, and if Bangladesh continue to fall short in this area, another defeat likely awaits.

Pitch and Conditions

Scattered thunderstorms are forecast, but hopefully rain should have no say in this one. The pitch showed signs of slowness in the second ODI, and the pitch for this match could slow down as the game goes on.

Possible Playing 11

Sri Lanka could test some new players given that the series is over. One player they could give a chance to is Shehan Jayasuriya over Lahiru Thirimanne.

Sri Lanka: 1. Avishka Fernando, 2. Dimuth Karunaratne (c), 3. Kusal Perera, 4. Kusal Mendis (wk), 5. Angelo Mathews, 6. Shehan Jayasuriya, 7. Dhananjaya de Silva, 8. Isuru Udana, 9. Akila Dananjaya, 10. Lahiru Kamara, 11. Nuwan Pradeep

Bangladesh could give Taskin Ahmed a run given they have lost the series. Also, Anamul Haque could be in line for selection if Bangladesh want to give him some game time, with Mohammad Mithun failing to impress in this series to date.

Bangladesh: 1. Tamim Iqbal (c), 2. Soumya Sarkar, 3. Mohammad Mithun, 4. Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 5. Mahmudullah, 6. Sabbir Rahman, 7. Mosaddek Hossain, 8. Mehidy Hasan Miraz, 9. Taijul Islam, 10. Taskin Ahmed/Shafiul Islam, 11. Mustafizur Rahman

  • Sri Lanka’s last ODI clean sweep (series of more than one game) was in June 2016 vs Ireland.
  • Mushfiqur Rahim became the third Bangladeshi to reach 6,000 ODI runs. Tamim Iqbal needs 110 to become the first to 7,000.

Match Prediction

Sri Lanka are well on top of Bangladesh in this series. They have outplayed them in all departments.

Bangladesh have the talent to put on a good display, but Sri Lanka are playing well enough to win again.

5 Ashes 2019 Predictions: Who will step up in the Ashes?

5 Ashes 2019 Predictions: Who will step up in the Ashes? Key players to watch out for in Ashes 2019

Test Cricket’s pinnacle event – The Ashes – is about to kick off for the 71st time since its inception in 1882.

This series is a difficult one to predict. After all, contests over the span of 137 years has Australia just ahead 33-32 in the head-to-head battle. Here, despite the home side enjoying success in an Ashes series on every occasion except one (2010/11) since 2001, both sides have reasons for and against lifting the coveted urn by the end of the five Tests.

I will explore each side’s strengths and weaknesses. Also, below are my five predictions for the big Test series, after thinking long and hard as to what might happen.

1. Leading run-scorer: Steve Smith (Australia)

There are a few contenders for this one. With both sides fragile in the batting department, much could rest on the big guns to deliver the goods in low-scoring battles.

Steve Smith finally returns to the Test format. 16 months since his last Test, Smith exited the game comfortably placed in the top three Test batsmen in the world, fresh off a very prolific 2017/18 Ashes campaign.

Here, he will be faced with a less-than-warm reception from the England crowds. Plenty of boos. Maybe even some more dressed in sandpaper. While this can be a distraction, it will only spur Smith on, coupled with his ability to bat for long periods that gives him an edge over other batsmen struggling to adjust after a big dose of white-ball cricket.

However, a concern for me is how Smith plays the seaming ball, given he opens up quite a bit to the ball moving away. But, he has enough fight in him to overcome periods of pressure. Also, a characteristic of seaming pitches is that there are good conditions for batting in the Test after the track settles, and it is in these instances where Smith’s hunger for runs can hold he and Australia in good stead. His patience is what could get him to outscore another leading contender in Joe Root, who continues to have an LBW issue. David Warner is also one to watch out for, but how he too handles the moving ball early will be key.

5 Ashes 2019 Predictions: Steve Smith will be out for a big series.

Leading wicket-taker: Jofra Archer (England)

Another very difficult pick. This is especially so given both sides will have to make adjustments and tough calls to cater for their best possible attacks, with a number of talented bowlers on show.

Australia possess Pat Cummins, the leading wicket-taker from the last Ashes. However, it remains to be seen if he can get the big wickets to go with his consistent bowling. The same applies to Nathan Lyon in more seamer-friendly conditions. Also, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc could have a say, but the former has been a bit short on cricket lately and the latter is not as prolific in red-ball cricket. This could open the door for the excellent James Pattinson, but will he get five Tests under his belt?

Then, onto England. Possessing a number of prolific bowlers in home conditions, England will be tough to handle throughout the series. James Anderson is a massive contender for leading wicket-taker, but his calf injury is a concern that might stop him from playing all five Tests as England might look to manage him. So too are Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes, who recently dismantled Ireland for 38 when hopes of a stunning Test upset were on the cards.

Jofra Archer is my pick. It is a bold call given that he has never played a Test (and misses the first), but the red-ball format is arguably his best – he has taken 131 wickets in 28 First Class matches at just 23.44. His pace and wicket-taking ability could be a key difference in this series, giving England a key dimension in their quest to regain the Ashes.

5 Ashes 2019 Predictions: Jofra Archer will be a big threat this series.

3. England will have to find another opening batting combination

Who would partner Alastair Cook was a big topic of conversation when Andrew Strauss retired in 2012. With Cook retired, both opening spots are now up for debate.

Jason Roy and Rory Burns became England’s 16th opening combination when they were picked to take the field in the recent Test against Ireland. However, evidence from that Test – as well as their careers – give the impression that England’s search for the perfect partnership will continue (P.S. this goes beyond number 11 Jack Leach showing everyone up).

Jason Roy pushes very hard at the ball well in front of his body. This is dangerous against the moving ball. His constant desire for bat on ball is an opportunity for the Australian new ball bowlers to exploit with early movement. Also, Rory Burns’ technique has come under scrutiny, with Michael Holding claiming on commentary that he is not sure if Burns has the technique to cut it at Test level. A candidate for LBW and caught behind, Burns needs to avoid getting his front pad too far across to off-stump too soon, as well as defending deliveries wide outside off-stump.

These technical problems create doubts over England’s openers to provide good starts. I believe England will be forced to try a new opening combination throughout the series.

5 Ashes 2019 Predictions: England are still searching for their perfect opening combination.

4. There won’t be a drawn match

Barring persistent rain that washes out two or three days, it is very difficult to see how any Test will finish in a draw. The pitch would have to be extremely flat; and even then, both teams’ bowling is stronger than their batting. Indeed, the biggest factor is the disappointing tendency for batsmen to hit out instead of fighting it out in challenging periods, offering the opportunity for wickets.

I expect every Test to have a result, as was the case in 2015, with low-scoring matches a key theme throughout the series.

5 Ashes 2019 Predictions: Who will step up in the Ashes? Key players to watch out for in Ashes 2019. Who will win the Ashes? Who will win Ashes 2019?
5 Ashes 2019 Predictions: The 2015 series had a result in each Test.

5. Series result: England 3-2 Australia

Another tough prediction. Do I go with head or heart? Can this Australian side become the first since 2001 to win an Ashes series in England? Sure, there have been better Australian sides who have been unsuccessful, but those were against better England sides, too. In the end, though, I think England at home will just edge it out.

This is not to say Australia don’t have their advantages. I think their top three is superior to England’s, and this is where they can get ahead. However, England’s middle order, which includes the likes of Ben Stokes (contender for man of the series) and Jos Buttler (and Sam Curran if they choose) has an edge over Australia’s. If Jonny Bairstow can’t find his Test groove, then England have the impressive Ben Foakes to call on. The bowling attacks are also close on paper, but in English conditions, England start as favourites due to their experience, know-how and the Jofra factor.

I don’t think it will be a blowout. I think it will finish 3-2 either way, but am leaning towards England. Australia’s top three, while better than England’s on paper, is still vulnerable against the moving ball. Indeed, so is England’s, but their middle-lower order can bail them out of trouble a little better than Australia’s can.

This could ultimately prove vital in the final analysis.

Women’s Ashes: ENGW vs AUSW 2nd T20I Preview Dream11

Women’s Ashes: ENGW vs AUSW 2nd T20I Preview Dream11 Prediction. England Women vs Australia Women 2nd T20I Preview

Preview written by Aaron Murphy

Is there anything Australia cannot do in this series? England’s unbeaten record at Chelmsford – having not lost any of their 14 international fixtures there – was well documented, but in the end entirely irrelevant. Australian captain Meg Lanning made an absolute mockery of the venue’s “fortress” status with a world record 133 from 63 balls.

Having dealt England their most embarrassing loss since the third ODI in Canterbury, they now move to Hove, where England have managed to win five of nine completed limited-overs fixtures, but just one of four in the shortest format. Their most recent T20I in Brighton saw them bowled out for just 87 – by Australia in the 2015 Ashes.

Key to an England win

The mismatch now seems to be at a point where England simply have to rely on Australia having a bad day with either bat or ball, with the Southern Stars evidently choosing not to relax in the first T20I despite having already retained the trophy. The post-mortem is already well underway, with the ECB backtracking on a potential decision to cancel women’s county cricket for now. Long-term improvement will need to come from the top: Australia have four times as many paid players as England, while the WBBL stands above the pack when it comes to professional domestic competitions.

For now, it comes down to the importance of individual performances: England remain the second-best nation in the world by a long way, thus it won’t be a matter of axing heads at the end of the series, but the likes of Amy Jones (5 runs, 69 runs @ 13.80), Heather Knight (5 inns, 53 runs @ 10.60) and Anya Shrubsole (5 mats, 5 wickets @ 50.60) need to spare themselves some embarrassment.

ENGW vs AUSW 2nd T20I: A passionate take on the first up defeat.

Key to an Australia win

The central advertising campaign for the last Ashes series in Australia has come to life. In an effort to build the profiles of star players, billboards across the country were tagged with the line “if [player A] doesn’t get you, [player B] will!”. Whether it be Alyssa Healy’s 66 or Delissa Kimmince’s 5/26 in Leicester, Elysse Perry’s 7/22 in Canterbury or her 192 runs in the Test, or Lanning’s 133no in Chelmsford, it has never appeared truer.

The Australians have demonstrated, by batting England into oblivion in the Test and by their dominant performance in the first T20I, that they are madly results-driven, even when success has already been achieved. Should this well-oiled and professional machine drop their shoulders, England will need to be ready to pounce.

ENGW vs AUSW 2nd T20I: It was an incredible knock by Meg Lanning.

Possible Playing 11

Sarah Taylor has withdrawn from the remainder of the series to battle with mental health issues, having also missed the 2016 World Twenty20: “Mental health is not something you ‘beat’. It’s a continual management process and at the moment I don’t feel in a good enough place to compete in international sport.” Fran Wilson has been drafted into the squad but, with Amy Jones having taken the gloves in the first T20I, is unlikely to make the XI.

Whether the teams treat the remaining two fixtures as dead rubbers and give some squad players more match practice remains to be seen – there have yet to have been any whispers at time of publication – so for now, we’ll assume they remain unchanged.

England: 1. Danielle Wyatt, 2. Amy Jones (wk), 3. Tammy Beaumont, 4. Nat Sciver, 5. Heather Knight (c), 6. Leah Winfield, 7. Katherine Brunt, 8. Anya Shrubsole, 9. Sophie Ecclestone, 10. Laura Marsh, 11. Kate Cross

Australia: 1. Alyssa Healy (wk), 2. Beth Mooney, 3. Meg Lanning (c), 4. Ash Gardner, 5. Ellyse Perry, 6. Rachael Haynes, 7. Sophie Molineux, 8. Jess Jonassen, 9. Georgia Wareham, 10. Delissa Kimmince, 11. Megan Schutt

Option 2:

ENGW vs AUSW 2nd T20I Preview Dream11

Stats and Facts

  • Beth Mooney has passed 25 in six of her last 11 T20I innings.
  • England have won ten of their last 11 home T20Is when batting first.
  • The average first innings score in T20Is at Hove is 129.

Match Prediction

Hard to see anything other than an Australia win given the way the entire series has played out. That said, a team with nothing to lose can often be a team to be wary of. If England can win the toss and bat first, they ought to play fearlessly and have the talent to set a difficult target.

Sri Lanka v Bangladesh 2nd ODI Preview Dream11 Prediction. SL vs BAN 2nd ODI Preview Dream11 Prediction

The atmosphere was raucous. Colombo was in party mode. Lasith Malinga, one of Sri Lanka’s finest ever limited overs bowlers, got the fitting send off he deserved in his side’s huge 91-run win in the opening ODI.

But, there is the matter of a series to win for Sri Lanka. The challenge now is to refocus after a special day on Friday, tasked with replacing Malinga, who was too good for the Bangladeshi batsmen even though they knew what was coming. Before Malinga stole the show, Kusal Perera set the stage alight with a big batting effort, and another can propel Sri Lanka to their first ODI series win at home since 2015.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, had a day to forget. They assisted in boosting the party atmosphere with poor bowling and fielding, with Tamim Iqbal often looking overwhelmed in his first ODI as captain. His side managed to bring things back in the last 20 overs of Sri Lanka’s innings, but when Tamim was floored by a trademark Malinga yorker, the game was always heading in one direction. Can the Tigers now keep the series alive?

Key to a Sri Lanka win

That man Kusal Perera. Sri Lanka look a very dangerous side when he is in full flow, on show on Friday where Bangladesh had very few answers. Coming in at three, Sri Lanka would benefit greatly from a better outing by Avishka Fernando, who looked rather nervous first time out. With Bangladesh really struggling for penetration in the first half of ODI innings, a strong opening stand can make Kusal Perera even more dangerous. However, can the middle order bat with greater fluency this time around, after a struggle for boundaries at the death in the first match?

Also, Sri Lanka have small task of replacing Lasith Malinga. Such a task is not possible in one match, so how they bowl as a unit will be key. Tamim Iqbal, who will be striving for form, will be a key wicket up top, along with the top order who crumbled badly last time out. Nuwan Pradeep’s ability to nip the ball around and Lahiru Kamara’s pace can be disconcerting up top, but Sri Lanka need to pick up wickets regularly to reduce pressure at the death in the absence of Malinga.

Sri Lanka v Bangladesh 2nd ODI: How will SL go with Malinga?

Key to a Bangladesh win

The absence of Shakib Al Hasan was felt with bat and ball. A lack of control with the ball, combined with a bad top order collapse with the bat had Bangladesh reeling, playing catch up for almost the entire match. Here, top order wickets are the need of the hour in a must-win match, which might require Bangladesh to call on Mustafizur Rahman earlier – it was not until Sri Lanka were 107 after 15 that Mustafizur was introduced on Friday. Can the Tigers remove the dangerous Kusal Perera early and get into Sri Lanka’s middle order?

Indeed, the absence of Malinga will be of relief to Bangladesh’s openers. Both Tamim and Soumya were castled on Friday, and both now have a key role to play in transferring the pressure to Sri Lanka with the series on the line. With Mushfiqur Rahim and Sabbir Rahman strong in the middle order (despite the latter’s anti-climatic dismissal as often the case), the Tigers desperately need a response from their top order to keep the series alive.

Sri Lanka v Bangladesh 2nd ODI: Can Bangladesh deliver a better day for its fans?

Pitch and conditions

Like Friday, conditions will be hot and humid at the R Premadasa Stadium. There is a chance of showers, but they again could be avoided. The pitch is often a good one for batting, with Sri Lanka making 314 last game, with the previous five ODIs yielding a first innings average of 313.

Possible Playing 11

Who replaces Lasith Malinga for Sri Lanka? It could be Isuru Udana, who missed out last game. Also, Sri Lanka have questions to answer – is it worth persisting with Angelo Mathews and Lahiru Thirimanne so close together in key positions? What about the misfiring Thisara Perera?

Sri Lanka: 1. Avishka Fernando, 2. Dimuth Karunaratne (c), 3. Kusal Perera, 4. Kusal Mendis, 5. Angelo Mathews, 6. Lahiru Thirimanne, 7. Dhananjaya de Silva, 8. Thisara Perera, 9. Isuru Udana/Kasun Rajitha, 10. Lahiru Kamara, 11. Nuwan Pradeep

Bangladesh, despite the defeat, could stick with the same team. One possible change could be Taskin Ahmed coming in for either Shafiul Islam or Rubel Hossain.

Bangladesh: 1. Tamim Iqbal (c), 2. Soumya Sarkar, 3. Mohammad Mithun, 4. Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 5. Mahmudullah, 6. Sabbir Rahman, 7. Mosaddek Hossain, 8. Mehidy Hasan Miraz, 9. Shafiul Islam, 10. Mustafizur Rahman, 11. Rubel Hossain/Taskin Ahmed

  • Sri Lanka have not won an ODI series at home since beating West Indies 3-0 in 2015.
  • Bangladesh are still without a win in ODIs at R Premadasa Stadium (nine attempts).
  • Tamim Iqbal needs 129 runs to become the first Bangladesh batsman to reach 7,000 ODI runs.
  • Sri Lanka and Bangladesh played out a 1-1 series draw in 2017. Can Bangladesh level it up this time?

Can Sri Lanka quickly get back to full focus after such a great day on Friday?

I have the sneaky feeling Bangladesh will bounce back with the Malinga factor no longer the case in ODIs. This could very well be an interesting match.

Australia Ashes squad: 3 unlucky players who missed out

Australia Ashes squad: 3 unlucky players who missed out

Friday 9pm Sydney time was much awaited. After much deliberations, Australia’s squad – the one to try win an Ashes series in England for the first time since 2001 – was to be announced.

Australia named their Ashes squad on Friday.

There were surprises which, as always, led to talking points. I believe there are three players who are unlucky to miss out on the Ashes squad, and will cover them below.

1. Joe Burns

Joe Burns, the incumbent Test opener, is very unlucky to miss out on the squad altogether. This is especially so considering he scored 180 in his last Test (albeit against an attack that is not reflective of what Burns will face in England), along with 133 for Australia A a couple of weeks ago.

He averages 40 in 16 Tests. Sure, his big hundreds against New Zealand (on a good batting strip with a 200+ lead) and an inexperienced Sri Lanka side help, but he has every reason to feel aggrieved at missing out on an Ashes squad spot. Trevor Hohns echoed that thought, and has asked Burns to keep belting the door down/

Australia Ashes squad: Joe Burns is unlucky to miss out.

2. Kurtis Patterson

Another last-Test centurion. Kurtis Patterson made an excellent start to his Test career with runs against Sri Lanka, to go with a First Class batting average of over 40 in 67 matches. This kind of record is rare among Australian batsmen looking to break into the Test side, so leaving Patterson out would have been a tough call.

In the end, Matthew Wade’s form was too difficult to ignore. So too Mitchell Marsh’s potential and what he can do. Marnus Labuschagne too has had an excellent English summer so far, with his bowling the key factor in his selection over Patterson.

3. Alex Carey

Alex Carey is less unlucky than the previous two mentioned. However, he could have made the squad as a reserve wicket-keeper. His batting form has been superb, often getting Australia out of trouble in the recent World Cup. He was also one of the few batsmen to get a start on a very difficult pitch in the tour game.

In the end, the selectors felt white-ball form is not enough to win a spot in a Test squad where places are at a premium. While that is certainly fair enough, Carey will instead play for Sussex in the ongoing Vitality T20 Blast, which puts the onus on management to ensure he focuses enough on his red-ball game this summer if he is the man to replace Tim Paine as the Test keeper-batsman for Australia.

Much rests on the next six months in Alex Carey’s red-ball career.

Is there anyone else you feel was unlucky to miss out?
