Sydney Thunder vs Melbourne Renegades Preview Dream11

Sydney Thunder vs Melbourne Renegades Preview Dream11

Fourth plays third in the race to the BBL08 Finals.

After harping on about it for seemingly an age, the competition is in need of close games, especially with the Australian Open Tennis going really strongly, as always. Given the inconsistency of both these sides, anything can happen.

Sydney Thunder’s least favourite ground is the Gabba, and no longer because they have never won there. The floodlight failure last week just about robbed them of a vital win, but the efficiency of their performance is something they can be encouraged by. They come against a side that won’t be too surprised with the slower conditions at Spotless Stadium, so the challenge will be to continue the good form they have showed in their last couple of matches.

Melbourne Renegades’ win-loss pattern continued on Saturday night, losing to Marcus Stoinis’ Melbourne Stars. If the pattern is to continue, their bowlers will hurt Sydney Thunder on the way to a victory, just like they did to Brisbane Heat and Sydney Sixers in their previous two wins. With the Strikers losing badly yesterday, can the Renegades create breathing space between them and other top four challengers?

Key to a Sydney Thunder win

Jos Buttler left for England duty in West Indies, and Shane Watson has come to life. The Thunder skipper has taken responsibility brilliantly, scoring 68 and 100 in the last two games, leading from the front. He will be crucial to the Thunder’s chances tonight, as he has the ability to get them off to a flyer and then hold things nicely in the middle overs. However, the support he gets will also be key, with the return of Jason Sangha an important boost in the middle order, who needs to step up along with the likes of Anton Devcich, Callum Ferguson and Daniel Sams.

Also, can the Thunder bowlers restrict the Renegades batsmen on one of the slower pitches of BBL08? Chris Jordan and Gurinder Sandhu started beautifully against the Heat before the floodlight drama intervened, and both will be key in setting up a platform the spinners to do their thing. Fawad Ahmed, Jono Cook and Chris Green have all enjoyed life at Spotless Stadium at most times this season, and if they can pick up regular wickets, the Thunder will force Mohammad Nabi and Daniel Christian to play rebuilding knocks, which will go a long way to victory.

Key to a Melbourne Renegades win

Will it be a night the Renegades’ top order fires? Aaron Finch has struggled for form in recent times, but BBL allows for freedom with the bat. How he fares against opposition captain Shane Watson can be crucial to the result, setting up the platform for the likes of Tom Cooper, Sam Webster, Mohammad Nabi and Daniel Christian to pounce on the Thunder attack. Conditions might be on the slower side at Spotless Stadium, which was on display when Adelaide Strikers struggled last week, so how well the Renegades deal with the Thunder spinners will be key. Given the Renegades play their home games on the slow track at Marvel Stadium, they shouldn’t be in for too much of a shock.

Also, can the Renegades remove Shane Watson early? The likes of Kane Richardson, Harry Gurney, Mohammad Nabi and the returning Chris Tremain (if picked) will be crucial at the top to give the Renegades a strong foothold in the match. However, Cameron Boyce, who has been a little short on wickets of late, has a key role to play against a Thunder middle order that has shown to lose quick wickets at times in BBL08. All to play for as the finals near.

Possible Playing 11

Jason Sangha, who was playing for Cricket Australia XI vs Sri Lanka, is back in the Sydney Thunder squad. Sam Rainbird is also back, replacing Nathan McAndrew. Arjun Nair took four wickets vs the Strikers on this ground last week, and could play ahead of Cook.

Sydney Thunder Possible Playing 11: 1. Shane Watson (c), 2. Anton Devcich, 3. Callum Ferguson, 4. Jason Sangha, 5. Daniel Sams, 6. Jay Lenton (wk), 7. Chris Green, 8. Chris Jordan, 9. Gurinder Sandhu, 10. Jono Cook/Arjun Nair, 11. Fawad Ahmed

Melbourne Renegades have made three changes to their 13-man squad. Marcus Harris is now on Australian Test duty, and Jack Wildermuth and Joe Mennie are also out. Beau Webster, Chris Tremain and Jon Holland are in.

Melbourne Renegades Possible Playing 11: 1. Aaron Finch (c), 2. Mackenzie Harvey, 3. Sam Harper (wk), 4. Tom Cooper, 5. Cameron White, 6. Mohammad Nabi, 7. Daniel Christian, 8. Cameron Boyce, 9. Kane Richardson, 10. Harry Gurney, 11. Jon Holland/Chris Tremain

Dream11 Prediction

Sydney Thunder vs Melbourne Renegades Preview Dream11 Prediction
  • Sam Harper is coming off a duck against Melbourne Stars, but he is likely to bat higher up the order than opposition keeper Jay Lenton.
  • Aaron Finch has struggled for Australia in recent times, but the BBL could be the platform for him to fire. Incidentally, he was man of the match in his last game vs Sydney Thunder.
  • Tom Cooper has scored 119 runs in his last four innings at 39.66. He is finding form nicely.
  • Shane Watson has scored 68 and 100 in his last two innings, and is an excellent choice for captain.
  • Daniel Sams as the Thunder finisher makes my side. Anton Devcich has made a solid start to BBL life with two starts, and Mohammad Nabi has five wickets in his last two matches.
  • Fawad Ahmed has taken 10 wickets in BBL08. Eight have come at Spotless Stadium.
  • Chris Jordan has taken two wickets in four overs in BBL08.
  • Cameron Boyce has taken just two wickets in his last five games, and seems to enjoy the quicker pitches. Harry Gurney, with his variations, could be a big factor on the Spotless Stadium track.
  • Kane Richardson is equal top wicket taker, and was man of the match last season vs Sydney Thunder, where he took 4/22.
Sydney Thunder vs Melbourne Renegades Preview Dream11 Prediction

Stats and Facts

  • Melbourne Renegades have won their last four games against Sydney Thunder.
  • Aaron Finch has top scored for his side the last two teams he has played Sydney Thunder.
  • Shane Watson is the first and only player to score a century in BBL08.

Match Prediction

Two evenly matched and inconsistent sides go at it in an important game.

Given the Renegades’ strong record against the Thunder, I will pick them to get an important win in the race to the finals.

South Africa vs Pakistan 2nd ODI Preview Dream11

South Africa vs Pakistan 2nd ODI Preview Dream11

Here we go.

South Africa demolished Pakistan 3-0 in the Tests, and the tourists bounced back superbly in the first ODI, taking a 1-0 series lead thanks to a solid performance that didn’t allow the Proteas to get going.

South Africa were indeed on track for a big score, but couldn’t accelerate well enough in the period leading into the 40th over of their innings. The lead up overs saw a run rate hovering around five for the period, which allowed Pakistan a foothold in the game, even with such a fantastic platform set by the top three. There were positives to take from the first ODI for South Africa, but improvements are a must to avoid going 2-0 down in a home series in a World Cup year.

There were indeed plenty of positives from Pakistan. Some of the strokeplay from their batsmen was simply sublime, and they held their nerve as the chase could have got tense towards the end. It has been a challenging tour so far, but Sarfraz Ahmed’s men have a great opportunity here to build confidence with a World Cup just around the corner. Can the Pakistanis further boost confidence and consistency between matches away from home?

Key to a South Africa win

Hashim Amla, Reeza Hendricks and Rassie van der Dussen set up a fine platform for the Proteas in Port Elizabeth, but the inability to shift gears effectively enough hurt them dearly in the end. A total that should have been close to 300 ended up at 266/2 – a score that is reminiscent of ODI cricket 15 years ago. At Durban, South Africa will be hoping for another strong platform at the top, but this time you might see a few more risks in the lead up to the death overs, given South Africa’s finishing ability in David Miller. If Hashim Amla is able to bat through again, you feel things might be a little more rosy for the Proteas this time around.

Also, can Kagiso Rabada and Imran Tahir have greater impact with the ball? They shared just one wicket between them at St George’s Park, which enabled Pakistan to place greater pressure on the other bowlers, particularly Andile Phehlukwayo and debutant Duanne Olivier. Rabada and Tahir will be key in setting the tone for the Proteas, with the likes of Olivier and Pretorius to play strong supporting roles. Can the Proteas push the Pakistanis back with early wickets including the prized scalps of Imam-ul-Haq and Babar Azam to place more pressure on the likes of Fakhar Zaman, Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik?

South Africa vs Pakistan 2nd ODI Preview Dream11 Prediction
Image Credit: Getty Images. South Africa vs Pakistan 2nd ODI Preview Dream11 – Faf du Plessis has an excellent record at Kingsmead

Key to a Pakistan win

Pakistan took just two wickets at St George’s Park, but it was how tight they kept things that would have pleased Sarfraz Ahmed and Mickey Arthur. Just when South Africa looked to accelerate, they put the squeeze, limiting the boundaries. At Durban, the aim will be to put the squeeze again, lifting the pressure on the Proteas’ top three, who are more accumulators. Early wickets can put the pressure on Faf du Plessis and David Miller, who both would much rather like to come in and cause damage after a platform has been set. Shadab Khan bowled beautifully at Port Elizabeth, and he will be key in the middle overs, and potentially even more effective if the likes of Hasan Ali and Usman Khan Shinwari (if picked) can hurt South Africa at the top.

Also, as mentioned, some of the strokeplay from Pakistan’s batsmen in their chase at Port Elizabeth was simply stunning. Fakhar Zaman looked good for his 25, but Pakistan will want more from him in Durban, especially as he has the ability to let Imam-ul-Haq settle into his innings. A strong platform from the openers and Babar Azam, who also played some exquisite strokes, will be vital in opening the game up for first game hero Mohammad Hafeez to take advantage. With Shoaib Malik and Sarfraz Ahmed itching to go better than their first ODI efforts, Pakistan have the resources to go 2-0 up. A big opportunity awaits.

South Africa vs Pakistan 2nd ODI Preview Dream11 Prediction
South Africa vs Pakistan 2nd ODI Preview Dream11 – Mohammad Hafeez was superb in the 2nd ODI

Possible Playing 11

Aiden Markram was left out of the side in the first ODI, and probably won’t get back in just yet with each of the top three in the runs. His attacking approach would be something South Africa would benefit from, but it remains to be seen if he gets picked.

South Africa Possible Playing 11: 1. Hashim Amla, 2. Reeza Hendricks, 3. Rassie van der Dussen, 4. Faf du Plessis (c), 5. David Miller, 6. Heinrich Klaasen (wk), 7. Andile Phehlukwayo/Dane Paterson, 8. Dwaine Pretorius, 9. Kagiso Rabada, 10. Duanne Olivier, 11. Imran Tahir

Pakistan could stick with the same formula that got them the win at Port Elizabeth. One option is bringing back the talented Shaheen Shah Afridi, possibly for Imad Wasim or Usman Khan Shinwari. However, Durban is typically slower, so Imad might get another game, with Shinwari possibly the likeliest to be replaced.

Pakistan Possible Playing 11: 1. Imam ul Haq, 2. Fakhar Zaman, 3. Babar Azam, 4. Mohammad Hafeez, 5. Shoaib Malik, 6. Sarfraz Ahmed (c & wk), 7. Shadab Khan, 8. Faheem Ashraf, 9. Imad Wasim, 10. Hasan Ali, 11. Usman Khan Shinwari/Shaheen Shah Afridi

Dream11 Prediction

South Africa vs Pakistan 2nd ODI Preview Dream11 Prediction
South Africa vs Pakistan 2nd ODI Preview Dream11 Prediction
  • South Africa will likely take a lot more risks to get the scoreboard moving, meaning the middle order players will get a run.
  • Faf du Plessis has an outstanding record at Kingsmead: two centuries in five matches, including his most recent ODI at the ground vs India.
  • Hashim Amla and David Miller also have good records at Kingsmead. Amla is coming off a century, and has three fifties and a century at this ground. Miller has 435 runs in nine ODIs at an average of 72.50 and SR of 108.21.
  • Rassie van der Dussen is also in superb form, which makes him a difficult choice to leave out here.
  • Babar Azam is one of the world’s premier ODI batsmen, with scores of 46, 92 and 49 in his last three innings. Imam-ul-Haq is also in fine touch.
  • Mohammed Hafeez was brilliant at St George’s Park, and is the best all-rounder option from both sides. Shadab Khan also offers excellent all-round ability.
  • Kagiso Rabada is a controversial exclusion. His record at Kingsmead makes for grim reading: Four wickets in four matches at an average of 53.
South Africa vs Pakistan 2nd ODI Preview Dream11 Prediction
South Africa vs Pakistan 2nd ODI Preview Dream11 – Imam-ul-Haq was impressive in the first ODI

Stats and Facts

  • Pakistan have four of six ODIs at Kingsmead vs South Africa, including the last two.
  • South Africa have lost six of their past seven ODIs at home against Asian opposition.
  • Hashim Amla became the quickest to 27 ODI centuries, beating Virat Kohli by two innings (167 vs 169).

Match Prediction

Really tough pick.

Pakistan would have picked up plenty of belief from their first ODI win.

However, South Africa have the quality to bounce back, and I think they will get a victory in a close match here, on the back of their middle order.

Adelaide Strikers vs Hobart Hurricanes Preview Dream11

Adelaide Strikers vs Hobart Hurricanes Preview Dream11

A repeat of the BBL07 Final. All the makings for a fine clash. Will we get one after a very one sided match between the Sixers and Heat yesterday?

Adelaide Strikers, last season’s champions, are one of the sides in a mid-table logjam. They have been good at times, and poor at others, much like the sides around them on the table. They come against comfortably the most consistent side in BBL08, which represents an opportunity for the Strikers to lay down a marker as the fight for a top four spot heats up.

Hobart Hurricanes will now make their second challenging trip in two matches after a hard-fought win vs Perth Scorchers. That they won despite D’Arcy Short and Matthew Wade getting out cheaply, plus Jofra Archer being removed from the attack due to two infringements, which was a show of their championship qualities. Will they continue to build momentum into the playoffs?

Key to an Adelaide Strikers win

Alex Carey returns from Australian ODI duty, where he did not have the best of series against India. He possesses plenty of talent, though, and the BBL can be a great platform for free play. He will be vital at the top for the Strikers, along with the likes of Jake Weatherald and Colin Ingram, with Travis Head now on Australian Test duty. With the Hurricanes possessing wicket taking and run scoring ability right throughout their lineup, it is crucial the Strikers’ top order sets a strong platform for its middle order to launch.

Also, will the Strikers’ bowling attack get the better of Hobart Hurricanes’ top order? The return of Billy Stanlake is a boost, given the good signs he showed at times in the third ODI against India. He will be key at the top in limiting Matthew Wade and D’Arcy Short. However, as the Hurricanes showed in Perth, George Bailey and James Faulkner, along with Ben McDermott, are still very dangerous players, which puts onus on the likes of Rashid Khan, Ben Laughlin and Michael Neser to deliver.

Adelaide Strikers vs Hobart Hurricanes Preview Dream11 Prediction
Image credit: Getty Images. Adelaide Strikers vs Hobart Hurricanes Preview Dream11 Prediction: Alex Carey will be key for the Strikers.

Key to a Hobart Hurricanes win

It was a fine win for Hobart Hurricanes at Perth, but that they nearly lost after reducing their opposition to 7/3 is cause for improvement. Jofra Archer has been below his lofty standards at times in BBL08, and has to bounce back against strong opposition after a disappointing night. He, along with James Faulkner and Riley Meredith will be key in targeting an Adelaide Strikers’ lineup that will rely significantly on top order runs to have a chance in this one. Can the seamers provide a platform for the spinners to target a middle order needing to both rebuild and get a move on?

Also, can the Hurricanes’ top five combine to make life difficult for the Strikers? D’Arcy Short and Matthew Wade will be key at the top, and a strong platform paves the way for the impressive Caleb Jewell, Ben McDermott, George Bailey and James Faulkner to continue the strong form they have shown in recent times. It will especially be key how they deal with Stanlake at the top, Rashid Khan in the middle overs, and Ben Laughlin at the death. The Hurricanes have a chance to avenge their loss in the BBL07 Final by putting a dent in Adelaide’s BBL08 finals hopes, and they will be up for it.

Adelaide Strikers vs Hobart Hurricanes Preview Dream11 Prediction
Image Credit: Getty Images. Adelaide Strikers vs Hobart Hurricanes Preview Dream11 Prediction – Will Matt Wade outplay his opposition number, Alex Carey?

Possible Playing 11

Alex Carey and Billy Stanlake return for Adelaide Strikers. Offspinner Michael Cormack has also been added to the 13-man squad.

Adelaide Strikers Possible Playing 11: 1. Alex Carey (wk), 2. Jake Weatherald, 3. Colin Ingram (c), 4. Matt Short, 5. Jono Wells, 6. Jake Lehmann, 7. Rashid Khan, 8. Michael Neser, 9. Liam O’Connor/Michael Cormack, 10. Ben Laughlin, 11. Billy Stanlake

Hobart Hurricanes have named an unchanged 13-man squad for this clash. Clive Rose could possibly come in for David Moody.

Hobart Hurricanes Possible Playing 11: 1. Matthew Wade (c & wk), 2. Matthew Wade, 3. Caleb Jewel, 4. Ben McDermott, 5. George Bailey, 6. Simon Milenko, 7. James Faulkner, 8. Johan Botha, 9. Jofra Archer, 10. Riley Meredith, 11. David Moody/Clive Rose

Dream11 Prediction

Adelaide Strikers vs Hobart Hurricanes Preview Dream11 Prediction
Adelaide Strikers vs Hobart Hurricanes Preview Dream11 Prediction
  • Either Matthew Wade or Alex Carey are good options. However, while Carey is a fine player, he has been struggling for form a little. It feels Wade has been threatening to make a good score.
  • Colin Ingram has 201 runs in his last five innings, including two fifties.
  • Jake Weatherald’s last innings against Hobart Hurricanes: 115 off 70 balls.
  • George Bailey is in terrific form, scoring two fifties in his last two innings. He has 242 runs in BBL08 at an average of 60.50.
  • Caleb Jewell looked excellent on debut, hitting 32 in Perth. He offers good value.
  • D’Arcy Short is the competition’s leading run scorer (368).
  • Matt Short misses out in the all-rounder position, given he has scored just 40 runs in his last six innings.
  • James Faulkner and Riley Meredith are equal fourth in the leading wicket taker chart in BBL08 with 13 wickets each. Faulkner is also a good finisher with the bat if needed, as on display last game vs Perth Scorchers.
  • Ben Laughlin has five wickets in his last three games, and is a good option for death over wickets. Jofra Archer has been under par in recent times (three wickets in last five games, and removed from attack vs Scorchers), which means he misses out.
Adelaide Strikers vs Hobart Hurricanes Preview Dream11 Prediction

Stats and Facts

  • Adelaide Strikers have won five of their last seven matches vs Hobart Hurricanes.
  • Adelaide Strikers beat Hobart Hurricanes to lift the BBL07 Title.
  • The home team has won the last seven matches between the sides.

Match Prediction

Promises to be an exciting clash.

Adelaide Strikers are coming off eight days rest, after they were hammered by Sydney Thunder. Hobart Hurricanes are flying after a last-gasp win vs Perth Scorchers.

Tough one to predict, but given the Hurricanes’ fine form, I will predict a close Hobart win.

Sydney Sixers vs Brisbane Heat Preview Dream11

Sydney Sixers vs Brisbane Heat Preview Dream11

Five games to go for Sydney Sixers. Six for Brisbane Heat.

Both sides are coming off poor showings in their respective last games, and the time is now to rectify that, as the group stage starts to reach its business stage.

Sydney Sixers were particularly horrible in their thrashing at the hands of the Melbourne Renegades. Their batting performance lacked runs and was full of soft dismissals, with the game as good as over even before Tom Curran played a fine lone hand. The Sixers have put together some fine performances in BBL08, but a poor one is always around the corner, and the time is now to put consistent performances together. A win tonight will put the Sixers in the top four – can they step up?

Brisbane Heat have also been up and down in recent matches, with a floodlight failure the catalyst of a very lucky escape in their last match against Sydney Thunder. Their reliance on their top order is still there for everyone to see, and need a big performance once again from their top three if they are to keep their finals push alive. However, they have shown some form with the ball – particularly last week vs Melbourne Renegades – can they cause further problems for the Sydney Sixers’ lineup?

Key to a Sydney Sixers win

Lots of top order and powerplay wickets have hurt the Sixers on a number of occasions in BBL08. This again was at the fore of their latest capitulation, falling to 16/3 after 4.5, 29/4 after 8.2 and 51/5 after 11 overs to render the game as good as over against the Renegades. Here, the top order must deliver to give the Sixers a chance to compete against a side that prides itself on top order runs. Jack Edwards is yet to fire in BBL08, and the time is now for him, along with Daniel Hughes at the top who has shown some good form this tournament. Can they put on a good opening stand, paving the way for the likes of James Vince, Moises Henriques and Jordan Silk to set a strong platform for Tom Curran to go hard in the death overs? To win the game, this is the template the Sixers must follow.

Also, the Sixers have the resources to pick up powerplay wickets. Brisbane Heat rely significantly on Brendon McCullum, Max Bryant and Chris Lynn to score big runs, so if the Sixers can get at least two of these three out relatively early, they have a strong foothold in the game, just as was the case in the New Years’ Day clash between these sides. Steve O’Keefe with the new ball might be a viable option against the Heat, who love pace on the ball, and will be key along with Tom Curran and Sean Abbott who are perennial wicket takers in T20 cricket. Will it be the night of the Sixers?

Sydney Sixers vs Brisbane Heat Preview Dream11 Prediction
Image credit: Getty Images. Sydney Sixers vs Brisbane Heat Preview Dream11 Prediction – Sean Abbott has an excellent record v Brisbane Heat

Key to a Brisbane Heat win

Max Bryant, Brendon McCullum and Chris Lynn have been central to the Heat’s victories so far in BBL08, and the same remains. They were 10/2 in no time vs Sydney Thunder, and it was likely game over, which highlighted the importance of the top order. An opportunity is available tonight to get into the BBL08 top four, and if the top three can set a platform, the Heat middle order possesses power especially in the form of Ben Cutting that can take advantage. A strong batting performance that sees the Heat top order significantly outperform the Sixers’ can go a long way to victory.

Indeed, a big question is whether the Heat attack can open up the Sixers’ top order wounds. Jack Prestwidge, if selected, can be a key bowler, given the encouraging signs he showed against Sydney Thunder. However, the likes of Josh Lalor, Brendan Doggett, Mujeeb ur Rahman and Mitch Swepson need to ensure a cohesive bowling performance, much like the Renegades did the other night, to pile on the pressure on the Sixers from all angles. Can they have the Sixers relying on Tom Curran and Sean Abbott for runs?

Possible Playing 11

Sydney Sixers have picked the same 13-man squad from their awful night against the Renegades. They are likely to stick with the same XI.

Sydney Sixers Possible Playing 11: 1. Jack Edwards, 2. Daniel Hughes, 3. James Vince, 4. Moises Henriques (c), 5. Jordan Silk, 6. Josh Phillipe (wk), 7. Tom Curran, 8. Sean Abbott, 9. Steve O’Keefe, 10. Ben Dwarshuis, 11. Ben Manenti

Brisbane Heat have added spinner Matt Kuhnemann to their 13-man squad, replacing Mark Steketee. He could possibly be chosen over Jack Prestwidge.

Brisbane Heat Possible Playing 11: 1. Max Bryant, 2. Brendon McCullum, 3. Chris Lynn, 4. Jimmy Peirson (wk), 5. Alex Ross, 6. Ben Cutting, 7. Mitchell Swepson, 8. Jack Prestwidge/Matt Kuhnemann 9. Josh Lalor, 10. Brendan Doggett, 11. Mujeeb ur Rahman

Sydney Sixers vs Brisbane Heat Preview Dream11 Prediction
Sydney Sixers vs Brisbane Heat Preview Dream11 Prediction
  • Jimmy Peirson is likely to bat higher up the order than Josh Phillipe.
  • Daniel Hughes has an excellent record against Brisbane Heat. He scored only two against the Heat earlier this season, but his previous three scores read: 37, 46 and 85.
  • Only D’Arcy Short has more runs in BBL08 than Chris Lynn. Max Bryant continues to offer excellent value.
  • Moises Henriques was man of the match against Brisbane Heat earlier this season. Tom Curran continues to have an outstanding season, and can offer plenty with both bat and ball. He is coming off a fine 44 vs Melbourne Renegades.
  • Jordan Silk has a good record at the SCG this season, but misses out just over Hughes and Henriques who have enjoyed success against the Heat in recent times.
  • Sean Abbott also has a fantastic record against the Heat, taking 4/11 last season when the Sixers rolled the Heat for 73.
  • Mujeeb ur Rahman is blowing hot and cold at the moment, taking just five wickets in his past six games. Brendan Doggett has seven in his last five.

South Africa vs Pakistan 1st ODI Preview Dream11

South Africa vs Pakistan 1st ODI Preview Dream11

By Abdul Shakoor: @abdulshakoorcric.
A horrendous Asia Cup, a drawn ODI series against New Zealand, and the only comfortable wins coming against Zimbabwe last year tells you the story of Pakistan’s ODI woes.

In contrast to their T20 heroics, Pakistan need a confidence boost in ODIs ahead of the World Cup to go to England prepared, having some wins under their belt.
It surely is a test for Pakistan, not only to regain the fans who are frustrated from the Test series but to make a good statement and redeem themselves in the form of good competition they have to put forward.
On the other hand, South Africa are coming from a good tour of Australia with a 2-1 victory in the ODIs. They have good openers, a solid middle order, fancy finishers, raw pace and some legspin of high quality. They won’t go even a little bit down with ease.
Though Quinton de Kock and Dale Steyn won’t be available for the first two ODIs, they will still benefit from the likes of Aiden Markram and Duanne Olivier.

Also read: Light hearted Australia vs India ODI Series Player Ratings!

Key to a South Africa win:

Aiden Markram and Hashim Amla will be the important batsman for South Africa if they emulate their Test performance in the ODIs. The middle order will be balanced by Faf du Plessis who is an excellent player in the middle overs alonside the doppelganger of Martin Guptil, Henrich Klassen who showed some glimpses of his talent in the recent past. David Miller will also be key, especially given his fine record at St George’s Park.
Pace attack will be good enough and they will aim to not miss Dale Steyn (except Babar Azam) too much. Phehlukwayo has been a wicket-taking bowler in the middle overs and can pick wickets in uncanny fashion. Spin department will be strengthened when Imran Tahir will go from Port Elizabeth to Pakistan on his celebratory run.

South Africa vs Pakistan 1st ODI Preview Dream11: Faf du Plessis has called Pakistan the better ODI side

Key to a Pakistan win:

Pakistan will find it easy if Fakhar Zaman play nothing like the Tests and goes back to his old avatar.
“We expect Fakhar to play his natural game”, Sarfraz said recently.
Surely, Pakistan will find it very comforting if he gets Pakistan to a respectable score. He will be the key for Pakistan, along with either Imam ul Haq or Shan Masood, in setting a platform for Pakistan.
Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik, the experienced campaigners, have to carry on the innings in the middle as fireworks of Asif Ali won’t be available as he has been dropped. Similarly Sarfraz has to do more to justify his captaincy alonside Babar Azam on whom the eyes of fans will be stuck.
Also, Pakistan’s bowling attack have to show their overseas capabilities and Hasan Ali has to step up. Pakistan think tank is currently in the dilemma of going for a batting all-rounder, Hussain Talat, or the bowling all-rounder (according to Mickey Arthur), Faheem Ashraf. Shaheen has been an excellent pick for Pakistan and will be one to keep an eye for.

South Africa vs Pakistan 1st ODI Preview Dream11: It has been a tough time for Sarfraz Ahmed

Possible Playing 11

Rassie van der Dussen is in line to make his ODI debut with Quinton de Kock rested. The same applies to Duanne Olivier with Dale Steyn rested.

South Africa Possible Playing 11: 1. Hashim Amla, 2. Aiden Markram, 3. Rassie van der Dussen, 4. Faf du Plessis (c), 5. Heinrich Klaasen (wk), 6. David Miller, 7. Andile Phehlukwayo, 8. Dwaine Pretorius, 9. Kagiso Rabada, 10. Duanne Olivier, 11. Imran Tahir

Shan Masood is in line to make his ODI debut for Pakistan, and open with Fakhar Zaman.

Pakistan Possible Playing 11: 1. Shan Masood, 2. Fakhar Zaman, 3. Babar Azam, 4. Mohammad Hafeez, 5. Shoaib Malik, 6. Sarfraz Ahmed (c & wk), 7. Shadab Khan, 8. Imad Wasim, 9. Faheem Ashraf/Usman Khan Shinwari, 10. Hasan Ali, 11. Shaheen Shah Afridi

Dream11 Prediction

Stats and facts:

  • Interestingly enough, Pakistan has scored the highest ODI total at Port Elizabeth – 335.
  • Pakistan have never lost an ODI to South Africa at Port Elizabeth (two wins, one game rained off).
  • David Miller averages 113.50 from four innings at St George’s Park.

Match Prediction

Expecting this to be a lot more closely fought than the Tests.

However, South Africa are on a good run at the moment, compared to Pakistan who are struggling against higher ranked sides. South Africa to win.

Perth Scorchers vs Hobart Hurricanes Preview Dream11

It’s second last vs first, but has the potential to be game of the tournament.

BBL08 desperately needs a high-quality thriller, and this has the potential to deliver, with perennial achievers Perth Scorchers taking on high-flying Hobart Hurricanes.

However, it has not been perennial achievement for Perth Scorchers in BBL08. They sit seventh with three wins, which is something not many could have predicted before the tournament. However, they have won their last two matches on the back of good performances, and with the table tight at the moment, the Scorchers have the chance to break into the top four. The Hurricanes will be tougher opposition than the Stars (without their ODI players) and Sixers, so will the Scorchers step up at a key stage of the tournament?

Hobart Hurricanes have had a magnificent season so far, sitting pretty on their own at the top of the BBL08 table. They swatted away Melbourne Stars with ease, but like the Scorchers, they face a tough test today. They also swept the Scorchers aside easily earlier in the campaign, and a fantastic opportunity awaits to all but lock in their spot in the BBL08 playoffs, leaving their opponents with an even bigger fight to make the top four.

Key to a Perth Scorchers win

Cameron Bancroft and Ashton Turner were superb against the Sixers, and will be key again against a firing Hurricanes attack. Those two are in good enough form to help the others bat around them and set up a competitive total against an opposition top order that has conquered most in BBL08. Bancroft and Turner against a strong attack are vital to whether the Scorchers can say they have turned a corner. This is a step up from the Stars and Sixers, and the Scorchers must put on a solid display, which includes strong contributions from the likes of Michael Klinger, Hilton Cartwright and David Willey.

Also, whether the Scorchers can overcome the Hurricanes’ top order, especially D’Arcy Short and Matthew Wade, will be crucial to the result. Nathan Coulter-Nile and David Willey have more wickets in them than they have shown, and they will be crucial at the top to set a platform for AJ Tye and Usman Qadir, who have both been good in recent matches. With Jason Behrendhorff, Jhye Richardson and Ashton Agar unavailable, the Scorchers need a collaborative bowling effort that asks questions of the Hurricanes from all avenues.

Key to a Hobart Hurricanes win

Hobart Hurricanes possess a fine top order, which has had an impact in BBL08 thanks to the in-form openers. D’Arcy Short has continued on his fine BBL form from last season, and if he bats through to the latter part of the innings, the Hurricanes will be set for a strong total as he allows others to bat around him. Matthew Wade is one of those, who has also often ensured the Hurricanes get a strong start, which paves the way for Ben McDermott and George Bailey to capitalise. Will the Hurricanes overcome a Scorchers attack that will throw everything at them?

Also, expect the Hurricanes’ bowlers to enjoy conditions at Optus Stadium. The pitch has provided some pace and bounce in BBL08, which is perfect for Jofra Archer and Riley Meredith, who both extracted pace out of what is a slower pitch at the MCG a few nights back. These two will be key in targeting a Scorchers’ lineup that is only just finding its feet, with Cameron Bancroft and Ashton Turner two big targets. If the Hurricanes get the better of them, it will go a long way to victory.

Possible Playing 11

Ashton Agar is out of BBL08 with a fractured finger. Will Bosisto takes his place in the squad.

Perth Scorchers Possible Playing 11: 1. Michael Klinger, 2. Cameron Bancroft (wk), 3. Sam Whiteman, 4. Ashton Turner (c), 5. Hilton Cartwright, 6. Will Bosisto, 7. David Willey, 8. Nathan Coulter-Nile, 9. Matt Kelly, 10. Andrew Tye, 11. Usman Qadir

Hobart Hurricanes have made one change to their squad, with Jake Doran currently playing for Cricket Australia XI against Sri Lanka, where he has made an unbeaten century.

Hobart Hurricanes Possible Playing 11: 1. Matthew Wade (c & wk), 2. D’Arcy Short, 3. Alex Doolan, 4. Ben McDermott, 5. George Bailey, 6. Simon Milenko, 7. James Faulkner, 8. Johan Botha, 9. Jofra Archer, 10. Clive Rose, 11. Riley Meredith

Dream11 Prediction

Perth Scorchers vs Hobart Hurricanes Preview Dream11 Prediction
Perth Scorchers vs Hobart Hurricanes Preview Dream11 Prediction
  • Cameron Bancroft v Matthew Wade: Two in-form keeper batsmen. Cameron Bancroft gets the nod thanks to his super outstanding form in the past two matches. 59 against Melbourne Stars followed by 87* vs the Sixers.
  • Ashton Turner is one of the in-form batsmen in BBL Cricket, mustering 200 runs in his past four innings. He has hit 15 fours and eight sixes in this period.
  • D’Arcy Short is the competition’s leading run scorer. Like the Scorchers’ batsmen, he will likely face a tougher test against the Scorchers bowlers, but he is in terrific form. Offers a good deal with the ball, too.
  • Ashton Agar’s last three games vs Hobart Hurricanes (most recent first): 2/19, 2/14 and 1/22. However, he is out of BBL08 with a fractured finger, so Matt Kelly, who was impressive in the last match, takes his place.
  • James Faulkner has 10 wickets in BBL08, placing him in the top ten wicket takers.
  • AJ Tye has six wickets in his past two games, and is hitting his groove.
  • Riley Meredith is coming off four wickets in his last game, and might enjoy the pacy Perth conditions.
  • Nathan Coulter-Nile has gone wicketless in his past two matches, but took four wickets in his previous two games at Perth. He is worth persisting with.
Perth Scorchers vs Hobart Hurricanes Preview Dream11 prediction
Image Credit: Getty Images. Perth Scorchers vs Hobart Hurricanes Preview Dream11: David Willey is a player who has not stepped up in BBL08.

Stats and Facts

  • Hobart Hurricanes have won the past two meetings between the sides, after Perth Scorchers won the previous six.
  • Number of sixes in BBL08: Perth Scorchers 18, Hobart Hurricanes 40.
  • In four BBL matches at Perth Stadium, three have been won by the team chasing.

Match Prediction

I will hold my hand up and say that I did not expect Hobart Hurricanes to go this well. The positions on the points table should suggest that this will be a one-sided game, but the Scorchers will be very competitive in this one.

Will they have enough in them to win?

I originally said yes, but the loss of Ashton Agar is a big blow, given the balance he provides to the side. Hurricanes to win.

Melbourne Renegades vs Melbourne Stars Preview Dream11

Melbourne Renegades vs Melbourne Stars Preview Dream11

A thriller yesterday. Finally.

Now, the Australian ODI players are back for both sides for the Melbourne Derby tonight. Could we have two fantastic games in two nights in a BBL08 tournament that has lacked them?

This one indeed has all the ingredients for a fine game, but will the pitch at Marvel Stadium allow for good cricket? One can hope.

Melbourne Renegades once again highlighted the pattern of their BBL08 campaign, thrashing the Sydney Sixers mid-week. That too was after their own 101-run loss to Brisbane Heat, after they smashed Brisbane Heat by eight wickets just a few days earlier. Kane Richardson in his post-match interview at the SCG highlighted the need for greater consistency, and they have a fine chance to lay down a marker against a side that has its stars back.

No pun intended, that side is Melbourne Stars. They welcome back four of their Australian big guns, and boy do they need them after three straight heavy defeats. Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Peter Handscomb and Adam Zampa will be welcomed with open arms as the season starts to reach its business end, with all of seven teams still vying for three finals spots, given the Hobart Hurricanes are just about there. The Stars’ form was very impressive before their players went on Australian ODI duty, and now they have the chance to bounce back and get their season on track.

Key to a Melbourne Renegades win

At their best, the Renegades’ bowlers can rip through sides in this BBL08 tournament. They are the only team to beat Hobart Hurricanes so far, and dismantled both the Brisbane Heat and Sydney Sixers, both of whom have good players in their lineups. The Renegades have been mostly effective at Marvel Stadium this season, and will need to be against a Stars side possessing a good batting lineup. Kane Richardson, leading wicket taker in BBL08, will be crucial, along with the likes of Harry Gurney, Dan Christian, Jack Wildermuth and Mohammad Nabi in keeping the Stars batsmen quiet. Can the Renegades pick up crucial wickets in the powerplay to pile the pressure on a Stars middle order that will aim to be aggressive?

Also, will this be the platform for Aaron Finch to find his best form? He has struggled in Australian colours this season, but his one BBL08 innings yielded 43 runs, which is the minimum kind of return the Renegades will be hoping for at the top. Tom Cooper is hitting form, and he and Cameron White will be key, along with Marcus Harris and Sam Webster who have both shown good form at times for the Renegades. If the Renegades’ top order can set a strong platform, they have the resources in Mohammad Nabi and Daniel Christian to take advantage.

Melbourne Renegades vs Melbourne Stars Preview Dream11: Can Tom Cooper continue his good form?

Key to a Melbourne Stars win

Melbourne Stars have the resources now to challenge any side in BBL08. Marcus Stoinis, in superb form before leaving for ODI duty, will be vital at the top in setting a strong platform for the Stars. The men in green in recent games have struggled for a full batting performance, either starting well and finishing poorly, or starting poorly and finishing well, so the onus is on the top six to ensure that they counter a Renegades attack that has largely enjoyed Marvel Stadium this season. Can the likes of Ben Dunk, Glenn Maxwell and Dwayne Bravo ensure a strong night for the Stars, ideally off a strong performance from Stoinis?

Also, the Stars need to believe they can target an inconsistent Renegades lineup. Aaron Finch is out of touch, and Marcus Harris will be keen for more runs, along with Cameron White who has largely struggled in BBL08. The key for the Stars will be powerplay wickets, which forces the likes of Mohammad Nabi and Daniel Christian to have to play rebuilding knocks to get the Renegades out of trouble. Can Marcus Stoinis also deliver with the ball? What about Adam Zampa after a decent showing in the third ODI? Can Dwayne Bravo put on an improved showing? With Liam Plunkett and Jackson Bird showing some wicket taking form in BBL08, a cohesive bowling effort is crucial for the Stars.

Melbourne Renegades vs Melbourne Stars Preview Dream11: Dwayne Bravo will be a key player

Possible Playing 11

Aaron Finch returns for Melbourne Renegades, replacing Beau Webster in the 13-man squad.

Melbourne Renegades Possible Playing 11: 1. Aaron Finch (c), 2. Marcus Harris, 3. Cameron White, 4. Sam Harper (wk), 5. Tom Cooper, 6. Mohammad Nabi, 7. Daniel Christian, 8. Jack Wildermuth, 9. Cameron Boyce, 10. Kane Richardson, 11. Harry Gurney

As mentioned, four of Melbourne Stars’ ODI players are back.

Melbourne Stars Possible Playing 11: 1. Marcus Stoinis, 2. Ben Dunk, 3. Nic Maddinson, 4. Glenn Maxwell (c), 5. Peter Handscomb (wk) 6. Dwayne Bravo, 7. Evan Gulbis, 8. Liam Plunkett, 9. Adam Zampa, 10. Tom O’Connell, 11. Jackson Bird

Dream11 Prediction

Melbourne Renegades vs Melbourne Stars Preview Dream11

Stats and Facts

  • Melbourne Stars beat Melbourne Renegades easily on New Years’ Day.
  • Stars have won nine of last 11 games vs Renegades.
  • Melbourne Renegades have won three of their past four matches.

Melbourne Stars, with their players back, look a good side.

I predict they will win this game and get back on track.

Australia vs India ODI Series Player Ratings

Australia vs India ODI Series Player Ratings

Australia let the trophy slip a little at the start of the series, plonking Glenn Maxwell at seven and thinking Nathan Lyon and Peter Siddle were the right options. Then, Maxwell just about dropped it.

Congratulations to India on another successful ODI series – their 10th success in 11 campaigns since the 2017 Champions Trophy. However, if we are honest, it was closer than anyone surely could have expected it to be, with Australia’s selectors picking an eyelash, making a wish and blowing it in the air hoping that some of their selections would pay off.

There is no doubt the effort was there for Australia. Luck wasn’t quite. But, at the end of the day, this is a side that is as comfortable in their ODI strategy as viewers watching Theresa May put together some ‘dance moves’. It was a very similar score at the 40-over mark in each of the three ODIs for Australia, with the main difference that Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell were needed to do a rebuilding job at the MCG, which had fans thinking that this side was just about screwed, with a two year wait for an ODI series set to continue. Thanks also to nervous moments with the ball and in the field, the wait indeed continues.

For India, MS Dhoni showed that this is his world, and we are all just living in it. Everything happens on his watch, with some fantastic support, this time from Kedar Jadhav. India know they can be a lot better, but that they have won in Australia without being at their best is cause for optimism. In a time where Hardik Pandya’s case is seemingly about to reach the Supreme Court or United Nations General Assembly, the need for a sixth bowler was proved in style in the decider by India.

In this piece, I will rate each player out of ten for the series. As always, feel free to leave a comment!

Australia

Aaron Finch: Someone call 911. Front pad and stumps under severe attack. Man, aged in his 30s, identifying as Australian captain, just lets a white ball demolish them. An awful series from Finch, who, even as Australian captain, is no certainty of a World Cup spot. Serious problems. 2

Australia vs India ODI Series Player Ratings
Image credit: AAP. Australia vs India ODI Series Player Ratings: A winless run wasn’t broken, but the stumps were.

Alex Carey: Another disappointment in this series. Now, even Carey, Vice-Captain of the side, is not a total certainty for England. He looks to be more suited to the lower order. His lowlight a pull shot in the second ODI that a number 11 would have even been disappointed with. 3

Usman Khawaja: Australia needed more from Usman Khawaja right throughout the summer. His Test series was under par, and despite three starts in the ODI series, he was far from his free-flowing best. That languid style looks good when you’re scoring, but when you’re not, you become known as the Mesut Ozil of cricket. 5

Shaun Marsh: Play Test cricket with a white ball and Shaun Marsh will surpass Donald Bradman. Loves the white ball game does Marsh, and it was a fantastic series form him. 224 runs in three matches. 8.5

Peter Handscomb: One of the positives for Australia in this series. Like Marsh, Handscomb looks at home in ODI cricket, scoring 151 runs at a strike rate of 103.42. 7.5

Marcus Stoinis: Threatened to do more. If Stoinis can improve his strike rotation at the start of his innings, he will be an even bigger asset than he already is. Disappointing bowling at the death in the deciding ODI. 6

Glenn Maxwell: Everyone knows Maxwell should be batting higher, except those selectors. Stuck at seven, everyone knows if he is out cheaply, Australia are not getting not much more on the board. Dropped the crucial catch of Dhoni in the decider (my grandmother could have caught it), after a good performance in the second ODI. 5

Australia vs India ODI Series Player Ratings
Australia vs India ODI Series Player Ratings: The trophy went down!

Jhye Richardson: One of Australia’s shining lights in the series. His coming of age, and can tell his grandkids he got the great Virat Kohli out three times in a single series. Figures of 6/112 across 30 overs in the series. Superb. 8

Adam Zampa: “Hey Adam, you showed some promising signs in the South Africa ODIs and the India T20Is, but we will pick a Test bowler in your place. Then, when he won’t take a wicket, we will throw you into the decider. Good luck.” Time for the selectors to treat Zampa a little better than they are. Just 34 off his ten overs kept Australia in the game. He gets a seven for his third ODI performance. 7

Australia vs India ODI Series Player Ratings
Australia vs India ODI Series Player Ratings: When Nathan Lyon gets a shot at India ahead of you.

Peter Siddle: Unfortunately, Australia couldn’t send Peter Siddle out as a winner in his final ODI, but the guard of honour was special! The Siddle experiment didn’t work, with just a single wicket across three matches. Looked mostly ineffective. If he’s on the plane to England as part of the World Cup squad, then that’ll do me. 3

Australia vs India ODI Series Player Ratings
Australia vs India ODI Series Player Ratings: Cricketers far and wide came along to thank Peter Siddle in his final ODI for Australia.

Billy Stanlake: Unlucky not to get the wicket of Virat Kohli. Bowled with good pace and intent in his only ODI of the series. Gets five for his third ODI performance. 5

Jason Behrendhorff: Series ended early due to a back injury, but promising start to his ODI career. Whether he can deliver at the death remains a question. 6

India

Rohit Sharma: The highlight a superb century at Sydney that had us in awe of his class in white ball cricket. Tried to repeat his ugly hoick from the Adelaide Test in the Adelaide ODI, and finished disappointingly in Melbourne. Still, a fine series. 8

Shikhar Dhawan: Certainly wouldn’t have India panicking as much as Australia are regarding Aaron Finch, but that was an under par series from Shikhar Dhawan. Still the second best opening batsman this series! 4

Australia vs India ODI Series Player Ratings
Australia vs India ODI Series Player Ratings: Great times for Finch and Carey

Virat Kohli: Bounced back well after a rare failure, with the highlight an unbelievable century at Adelaide. Kohli, given the perfectionist he is, would be slightly disappointed to get out twice in key moments. Still a solid series from a fine player. 7.5

MS Dhoni: Personally thanked Glenn Maxwell after the game for a dropped sitter. In all seriousness, there were signs of the vintage Dhoni in this series, and remember, he was only dismissed once. That was via LBW in Sydney, which pitched outside leg. His scoring rate in Sydney gave fans high blood pressure, and then had fans on the edge of their seats in Adelaide and Melbourne. However, he was cool as ice in warm conditions, even battling a groin injury as the series drew to a close. An excellent series for MS, making a case for that number four spot. With India backing him, four is his best spot. 8.5

Australia vs India ODI Series Player Ratings
Image credit: AP Photo/James Elsby. Australia vs India ODI Series Player Ratings: MS Dhoni delivered in both successful chases for India.

Kedar Jadhav: If you want to know what a street smart cricketer is, then look no further than Kedar Jadhav. He has commentators in a state of total shock every time he comes on to bowl. Has them in even more shock when it’s mighty effective. Followed up his bowling effort with a magnificent 61* that had Dhoni cruising and India fans shouting with joy. Crucial knock to get India home. He gets an 8.5 for his third ODI performance. 8.5

Vijay Shankar: Six overs for 23. Virat Kohli in heaven after the sight of Khaleel Ahmed and Mohammad Siraj going to all parts in the first two ODIs. 5

Ravindra Jadeja: Rarely a big wicket taker in ODIs, but hey, at least it’s not as barren for Jadeja as it is for Nathan Lyon and Peter Siddle. There was some superb fielding by Jadeja this series, including an amazing run out of Usman Khawaja in Adelaide. 6

Bhuvneshwar Kumar: Forget Ariana Grande. Bhuvneshwar Kumar has dropped the latest big hit, grateful for Aaron Finch. Finished the series as leading wicket taker. Superb in Adelaide and Melbourne especially, enabling India to get off to strong starts, as well as restricting Australia at the death. 8.5

Australia vs India ODI Series Player Ratings
Australia vs India ODI Series Player Ratings: Bhuvneshwar Kumar is so grateful for Aaron Finch.

Mohammed Shami: Impressive series for Shami, partnering Bhuvi Kumar beautifully at the top of the innings. Finished with five wickets at an economy of just over five. Solid. 7

Yuzvendra Chahal: India constantly leaving Chahal out of the ODI side is like having a stylish, effective BMW and leaving it to dust in the garage. He absolutely tore Australia apart in the final ODI, with a focus on bowling great lengths, challenging Australia’s footwork on a turning pitch. He gets 10/10 for his third ODI performance. 10

Mohammad Siraj: You don’t choose the RCB life. The RCB life chooses you. 1

Khaleel Ahmed: RCB said to be keeping a close eye on Ahmed for IPL 2020. 1

Ambati Rayudu: Entered the series looking to further lock down the number four spot. Leaves Australia wondering if he will have that spot in the World Cup. A disappointing series from Rayudu, with his innings in Adelaide a bit of a pain to watch. 2

Kuldeep Yadav: Surprised to not see Kuldeep in Melbourne. Below his best, yes, but always class. Not his series, though. 3

Dinesh Karthik: Magnificent second ODI performance to get India home. Always tries hard when he gets a chance. 6.5

There we have it.

A series that was a lot closer than expected. I am still in disbelief that the series went to a decider, but India won the key moments, and deserved to win.

It caps off a fine tour for the Indians. For Australia, the wait for a series win in any format since the ball tampering incident remains.

Australia vs India 3rd ODI Preview Dream11

Australia vs India 3rd ODI Preview Dream11

A decider. In a series between a side that hasn’t won an ODI series in two years against one that has won nine of its last 10 ODI assignments.

Surprised? You’re not alone.

Not surprised? You’re an optimist.

Or a pessimist, depending on which team you support.

One thing is for sure, though, is that the decider promises to be a good clash in what’s been an exciting, competitive series.

Australia were close to picking up a series win in Adelaide, where they were arguably favourites after Virat Kohli’s dismissal. Their attack on paper looked one quality ODI bowler short, and it proved to be the case, with a defeat in the final over after fighting till the end. Shaun Marsh has continued his magnificent form, which set Australia up for a big finish with the bat as was the case in Sydney, but the result didn’t go their way. Will they turn it around in Melbourne and win their first series in two years?

India, thanks to their big guns, kept the series alive. It was a fantastic run chase, which highlighted the importance of the top three, and that the middle order can add the icing on the cake. However, like Australia, India aren’t without their own concerns. Their bowling combinations were slightly off in Adelaide, and the Indians will need to be on point with their team selections and performance to finish what’s been a fine tour on an even bigger high.

Key to an Australia win

Given the numbers and how this series has panned out so far, Shaun Marsh is undoubtedly crucial to Australia’s chances. He was key in setting a platform in the first ODI, and was central to the batting effort in the second. However, Australia desperately need more from Alex Carey and the out of form Aaron Finch at the top to reduce the pressure on Australia’s 3-5, who must step up given the lack of batting nous after Glenn Maxwell. The Australians have made clear their plans to set up the innings for Stoinis and Maxwell, so Usman Khawaja and Peter Handscomb will also be key in producing partnerships to ensure their finishers aren’t in too early.

Also, can Australia get the better of at least two of India’s top three like they did in Sydney? Jhye Richardson will be crucial at the top with Jason Behrendhorff out with a back injury, given he has been Australia’s key wicket taker so far this series. However, just Richardson will not be enough for Australia, who need Peter Siddle and the incoming Billy Stanlake and Adam Zampa to deliver with the ball in a crunch game. Nathan Lyon has been dropped after not taking a wicket this series, in a move by the selectors that has thrown Adam Zampa into the fire. However, there is no time better than a decider for Zampa, along with Siddle, to show what they are made of in effectively supporting the frontline bowlers.

Australia vs India 3rd ODI Preview Dream11 Prediction
Image credit: Getty Images. Australia vs India 3rd ODI Preview Dream11: Aaron Finch continues to struggle.

Key to an India win

India’s top three, thanks to a strong opening stand and the brilliant Virat Kohli, set the tone for a good chase in Adelaide. These three will undoubtedly be key again, not only because they have delivered two-thirds of India’s ODI runs since the start of 2017, but because of the influence they have on India’s middle order. MS Dhoni was superb at the death, fighting brilliantly in the heat, along with Dinesh Karthik who was magnificent in keeping the score moving. They were enabled the freedom thanks to a strong platform. India, to win the series, will need another collaborative batting effort, with Kohli at the forefront, better shot selection at key times from Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma, as well as better strike rotation from Ambati Rayudu, if picked.

Also, just as India require a collaborative batting effort, the same applies with the ball. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami have been brilliant in building the pressure on Australia earlier, but the change bowlers have undone the good work. Mohammad Siraj struggled on debut, and could be replaced by Yuzvendra Chahal. Regardless of the personnel, though, India have a great opportunity to get the better of Australia’s top five to leave Stoinis and Maxwell between a rock and hard place. If those two need to rebuild and fail, it’s curtains for Australia.

Australia vs India 3rd ODI Preview Dream11 Prediction
Australia vs India 3rd ODI Preview Dream11: India needed Virat Kohli to step up in Adelaide, and he did brilliantly.

Possible Playing 11

As mentioned, Australia have dropped Nathan Lyon, with Adam Zampa his replacement. Here is a memo to the Aussie selectors: How can a player be expected to perform if they are constantly in and out of the side? That too for a Test bowler this series? Even worse, thrown into a decider expected to deliver right away? It’s asking a lot for Adam Zampa to come in and fire right away, but that’s the task required.

Australia Possible Playing 11: 1. Aaron Finch (c), 2. Alex Carey (wk) 3. Usman Khawaja, 4. Shaun Marsh, 5. Peter Handscomb, 6. Marcus Stoinis, 7. Glenn Maxwell, 8. Adam Zampa, 9. Jhye Richardson, 10. Peter Siddle, 11. Billy Stanlake

The question for India is who supports their main four bowlers. Their best option is Yuzvendra Chahal, given Khaleel Ahmed and Mohammad Siraj have both struggled to stem the scoring this series. Also, Vijay Shankar or Kedar Jadhav are a chance of playing, which means Ambati Rayudu could miss out.

India Possible Playing 11: 1. Rohit Sharma, 2. Shikhar Dhawan, 3. Virat Kohli (c), 4. Ambati Rayudu/Vijay Shankar, 5. MS Dhoni (wk), 6. Dinesh Karthik, 7. Ravindra Jadeja, 8. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 9. Mohammed Shami, 10. Kuldeep Yadav, 11. Yuzvendra Chahal

Pitch and conditions

Weather is expected to be much cooler in Melbourne than in other parts of Australia, where there is a continued heatwave. A high of 27 degrees is expected, and the pitch is tipped to provide some assistance for the seamers with the new ball.

Dream11 Prediction

Australia vs India 3rd ODI Preview Dream11 Prediction
  • MS Dhoni has outplayed Alex Carey, and has proven to be an important foil in India’s middle order this series.
  • Shaun Marsh has four centuries in his last eight ODIs, and is in fine form. Peter Handscomb looked good in Adelaide, before lazily getting stumped. He offers good value.
  • Rohit Sharma has a superb record at the MCG, scoring 341 runs in six matches with two centuries. Shikhar Dhawan also has a fine record at MCG, scoring 237 runs in four matches, including a fine century against South Africa in the 2015 World Cup.
  • Bhuvneshwar Kumar is all over Aaron Finch right now. Finch, despite scoring a century in his last ODI at the MCG, is a risky pick now given his form. He has scored 228 runs at 15.20 across all formats since the beginning of the Australian international season.
  • Kuldeep Yadav strikes at 65 balls per wicket in final games of an ODI series. Do teams pick him better later? Perhaps, but the large MCG ground could suit him. Yuzvendra Chahal is also an option, but has a lack of cricket under his belt, as well as just 13 wickets in his last 11 ODIs at 37.84.
Australia vs India 3rd ODI Preview Dream11 Prediction
Image Credit: Getty Images. Australia vs India 3rd ODI Preview Dream11: Jhye Richardson will be key for Australia.

Stats and Facts

  • Australia haven’t won an ODI series since beating Pakistan 4-1 in 2016.
  • India have won nine of their last 10 ODI assignments.
  • Australia have won their last three ODIs against India at the MCG.

Prediction

This series deserves a good finale.

Will Australia or India lift the trophy?

I think India will win as they are just ahead of Australia in a few key areas, especially the top order. India to win 2-1.

Brisbane Heat vs Sydney Thunder Preview Dream11

Brisbane Heat vs Sydney Thunder Preview Dream11

The important games come thick and fast in BBL08. Just four points currently separate second and last, with Melbourne Renegades (in second) currently having played more games than anyone else, except for Sydney Sixers. Two points separate tonight’s opponents, which makes it a crucial game for both sides at the Gabba.

Brisbane Heat have won three of their past four games, which included a win via D/L method against Sydney Thunder last week. Inconsistency remains an issue for the Heat, shown by their two performances against Melbourne Renegades over the past week. However, the good cricket they have played is a confidence booster, especially with the likes of Brendon McCullum, Chris Lynn and Max Bryant in dangerous form. They have the chance now to break into the top four after losing their first three matches, and play a side whom they have an excellent record against.

Sydney Thunder sat in second place before the Renegades’ huge win against the Sixers yesterday. Like the Heat, the Thunder too are coming off a huge win, thumping one of the favourites Adelaide Strikers by 71 runs on Sunday. With the BBL08 group stage heading towards its business stage, the Thunder have an opportunity to push away from other top four challengers. However, they have won two of their past six matches, and need to show greater consistency both within games and across matches. Will they overcome the Heat?

Key to a Brisbane Heat win

Brisbane Heat are on a good run of results at the moment, mostly down to the strong form of their top order. Brendon McCullum has three fifties in a row, and will be key again in applying the pressure on the opposition, creating greater freedom for Max Bryant and Chris Lynn to fire. Bryant and Lynn are also in fine form, and against a Thunder attack that has shown to struggle against attacking batting in BBL08, a big opportunity awaits. Remember, these three dominated the Thunder last week, and will be out to do it again to create a platform for a middle order that needs to step up.

Also, it would have been very pleasing for coach Daniel Vettori to see the Heat blow the Renegades away with the ball. Coming off their biggest ever win in BBL history, the Heat bowlers need to now perform across matches. Shane Watson and Anton Devcich will be crucial wickets at the top to target a Thunder middle order that struggled a touch against Adelaide Strikers on Sunday. Will it be another good night for the Heat?

Shane Watson played his best innings by far in BBL08 in the last match. He took the Strikers’ attack apart, which paved the way to a competitive total. With Jos Buttler now in the Caribbean, Watson will again be crucial to the cause. However, he needs greater support from the likes of Anton Devcich, Callum Ferguson and Daniel Sams to ensure the Thunder are well placed for a competitive total. If they rely on one player, or a just a few spurts of brilliance, a defeat likely awaits.

Also, like the Heat, the Thunder restricted their opponents to under 100 in their last game. The men in green blew the Strikers away on a slow Spotless Stadium pitch, but the Gabba challenge will be different, with good batting conditions expected. The crucial question is can the Thunder get the better of the Heat’s top three? The likes of Gurinder Sandhu and Daniel Sams will be vital in setting up a platform for the spinners to maintain pressure on a Heat middle order that has been under par this tournament. Can the Thunder push clear of the other top four challengers?

  • Jay Lenton’s 27 off 16 balls vs Adelaide Strikers gives him the nod over Jimmy Peirson (85 runs across seven matches in BBL08).
  • Chris Lynn has a brilliant record against Sydney Thunder. His last four scores against them are: 75 (32), 85* (48), 25 (9) and 54 (30).
  • Brendon McCullum has three fifties in a row, and Max Bryant has a double figure score in every game, passing 30 four times with 26 fours and eight sixes for the tournament.
  • Shane Watson is coming off a man of the match performance against Adelaide Strikers. He also had a good match the last time he played at the Gabba, scoring 56 (34).
  • Callum Ferguson has two ducks in his past three innings, so Anton Devcich is perhaps a safer option with his all-round capabilities.
  • Brendan Doggett has six wickets in his four BBL08 games so far.
