Australia vs Sri Lanka 1st Test Player Ratings

Australia vs Sri Lanka 1st Test Player Ratings

Went to grab a drink? You missed a couple of wickets.

Felt like checking what was happening in the New Zealand v India ODI series? Pat Cummins had 10 wickets.

Blinked? You missed it.

Australia, the world’s number six Test side has swept aside Sri Lanka inside three days. Rivals England are having a horror Test in Barbados, and Cheteshwar Pujara has long left Australia (Tim Paine is certainly happy), making it a pretty happy Australia Day. The bowlers dominated, as expected, tearing through Sri Lanka twice as they miss Angelo Mathews like the deserts miss the rain. What was also not unexpected was Mitchell Starc’s struggles, as well as no Australian reaching a century. The Canberra Test is Australia’s last chance to keep a 133-year record exactly that, and improve more with the bat as the performance still left a little to be desired.

Australia vs Sri Lanka 1st Test Player Ratings: Can one Aussie make a century in Canberra?

However, Sri Lanka barely made it over 100 themselves. It was an awful display. It most certainly wasn’t the quickest of Gabba pitches, with the Sri Lankans falling numerous times to loose drives as Australia pitched the ball up nicely. The millions of flies across very hot Australia were sure to provide greater resistance in annoying humans than the Sri Lankan batsmen, who have a whole lot of work to do if they wish to be competitive in the second Test starting on Friday.

Below are my player ratings for the first Test. As always, it is a light-hearted review on the play gone by!

Australia

Marcus Harris: In Canberra, Sri Lanka might look to bowl Dimuth Karunaratne and Niroshan Dickwella first up to Marcus Harris, let him fly to 30, and then get him out. It’s not often a player looks so good at the start of his innings, and then is not able to carry on. Another start unconverted. 6

Australia vs Sri Lanka 1st Test Player Ratings: Marcus Harris running back to the pavilion.

Joe Burns: Addressing the full length ball moving away is crucial for Joe Burns if he wants to get on the plane to England. Because, guess who will be targeting him come Ashes time? Burns will look to deliver with the bat in Canberra, after taking some nice catches in Brisbane. 4

Australia vs Sri Lanka 1st Test Player Ratings: When you spot a little weakness

Usman Khawaja: Usman’s UAE heroics seem a really long time ago. He has unfortunately been one of the summer’s biggest letdowns, which hurt Australia against India but no so much here. Trying to cut a straight ball perhaps isn’t a sign of a lack of confidence. It’s just muddled thinking. 2

Marnus Labuschagne: Reached Australia’s highest Test score of the summer (before Head did), and fell with a century in sight. Labsuchagne possesses a solid technique, but the question will be how hungry he will be for Test runs. With a FC average of 33 (and closer to 40 over the last couple of years), those questions are still asked loudly. The signs are positive, though. 8

Travis Head: Australia’s new co-vice captain (whether you like that or not) had a few nervy moments early, but settled in pretty well. Also missed out on a century with three figures in sight, but his partnership with Marnus Labuschagne really took the game away from Sri Lanka. 8

Kurtis Patterson: Looked promising on debut, and would have loved to have had more support from the middle-lower order. An absolute blinder of a catch on the third day to dismiss Dilruwan Perera. 6

Tim Paine:

Australia vs Sri Lanka 1st Test Preview: Look who’s happy!

A golden duck for the skipper. Was victim of a very good ball, but would like some runs in Canberra after a barren last few innings. Led his side well, but the opposition didn’t offer too much. 2

Patrick Cummins: Absolutely outstanding. Got Australia off and running on the first day, and never looked back. Looked pretty keen for a trip to the beach on Australia Day, completely ripping through the Sri Lankans on the third day. Finished with 10 wickets. 10

Mitchell Starc: Find someone who looks at you the way Mitchell Starc looks at tailenders. Unfortunately, Starc was all over the place, picking up just two wickets in the Test, and those were numbers eight and nine. Reached 200 Test wickets, but should he play in the second Test? 2

Australia vs Sri Lanka 1st Test Player Ratings: Mitchell Starc’s pitch map.

Jhye Richardson: An absolutely outstanding debut. Bowled with excellent pace, targeting the stumps and the outside edge of the Sri Lankan batsmen. Highlight was his great ball to Kusal Mendis in the first innings. Superb stuff, and has to be picked again in Canberra. Australia certainly have found a gem. 9.5

Nathan Lyon: Found turn and bounce, and bowled well. Sri Lanka feared him so much, even with the bat, that they even used up a review on him! 7

Sri Lanka

Dimuth Karunaratne: Raised hopes of a fighting first innings effort. Wasn’t to be. At least he didn’t get out to an out-of-form Mitchell Starc, right? 3

Lahiru Thirimanne: Snicko went off after the ball passed his bat in the second innings, which made for an unlucky dismissal. Showed more character than most of his teammates. “Marais Erasmus used the Snicko as an excuse to get the game finished early and head to the beach for an Australia Day barbecue”, an annoyed Thirimanne said. 5

Dinesh Chandimal: Dinesh Chandimal is now proudly sponsored by “Squared Up”. Did cop a brute of a delivery in the second innings in just his second ball, but the Sri Lankan captain has to deliver in Canberra. 1

Kusal Mendis: A total of 15 runs for the next Mahela Jayawardene. In all seriousness, Mendis certainly has plenty of talent, but if he is to reach his potential at Test level, he has to show greater consistency away from home. Victim of a beauty from Jhye Richardson in the first innings, but his second innings waft was reflective of a player who perhaps had his mind elsewhere. Ugly. 1

Roshen Silva: A player that Sri Lanka would have had an eye on to perform in this game, but the Australian slip fielders will be ready to pounce when he walks to the crease in Canberra. 1

Dhananjaya de Silva: Feet stuck in cement at times. In Australia, your footwork has to be precise, and de Silva needs to get things right ahead of the second Test. 2

Niroshan Dickwella: Plenty of entertainment from Dickwella, playing some extraordinary shots in both innings. “I wouldn’t mind the top order doing their job”, said Dickwella. “I want to be helping the team reach 300+, not 100.” 7

Dilruwan Perera: Bowled well for the most part after getting struck on the thumb. The Canberra track might offer some turn in its debut Test, and Perera will be crucial for Sri Lanka with both bat and ball. Will dream about Usman Khawaja. 4

Suranga Lakmal: This man is always capable of such incredible spells, like we saw in Kolkata vs India in 2017 and New Zealand in Sri Lanka’s previous Test. His performance here was excellent, displaying the fight that some of his teammates need to show as well. Moved the ball nicely. 9

Dushmantha Chameera: An economy rate of 4.24 in eight matches. Very respectable in this day and age…. in ODI cricket. This is Test cricket. Again loose at times, when Sri Lanka are crying out for consistency. 3

Lahiru Kamara: Massive blow with Kamara out of the Canberra Test with a hamstring injury. Bowled with good pace, and looked good when pitching the ball up fuller. Will be a miss for Sri Lanka. 6

So, a happy Australia Day indeed for Australia, with the chance now to pick up their first series win in any format since the Sandpaper Gate.

Can Sri Lanka put together a better fight than the Gabba Test? On the evidence we saw, unlikely.

New Zealand vs India 2nd ODI Preview Dream11

New Zealand vs India 2nd ODI Preview Dream11

A thrashing. An absolute thrashing. Was it an aberration, or something deeper? How could a meeting between world number two and three be so one sided?

New Zealand have to rectify things, and fast. As fantastic as India were in Napier, New Zealand were poor, highlighted by their muddled thinking and plethora of soft dismissals. The fireworks and excitement expected by fans right across the globe turned out to be a damp squib, and the second ODI is now a test of their resolve. They have been fantastic in recent years in home ODIs, but it’s not often they cop a battering so bad that a break in play because of the sun was their best moment of the day. Can they bounce back in beautiful Mount Maunganui?

No credit should be taken away from India. As was the case in Australia, the Indians were right on point from the outset, giving New Zealand very little to pounce on. Mohammed Shami was absolutely outstanding, becoming the fastest Indian to 100 ODI wickets, with India then picking up further reward after selecting both wrist spinners that any side in the world would rip your arm off if offered one. The batsmen then faced the sun as their biggest challenge, giving the New Zealand bowlers little encouragement for the second ODI, sealing a huge win. Can India make it 2-0?

Key to a New Zealand win

The silver lining for New Zealand after a such a disappointing performance is that they can test their ability to bounce back. With a World Cup looming, any opportunity for character building is one to be cherished.

To bounce back, New Zealand’s batmen have to be far better than they were in Napier. Martin Guptill and the now under pressure Colin Munro must get the better of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami to ensure New Zealand have some sort of platform when about to face up to India’s wrist spinners. A strong opening stand (or at least a significant contribution from one of the openers) reduces the pressure on Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson, both of whom let the pressure get to them somewhat in the first ODI. Those two will be crucial in getting New Zealand to a position where they can launch in the death overs, giving freedom to the likes of Tom Latham, Henry Nicholls and Mitchell Santner to go for it.

On the bowling front, it is unfair to judge New Zealand’s bowlers on the first game, with such a small total to defend. However, the template for success, whilst huge, is clear. Getting the better of India’s top three will be crucial, and if Tim Southee and Trent Boult can find movement up top, Williamson might be inclined to attack a little more. Both Lockie Ferguson and Doug Bracewell bowled encouragingly in Napier, so if New Zealand can get the better of the powerplay period, the Black Caps have the resources to keep the pressure on India. Will it be a day where India’s middle order is tested? From New Zealand’s perspective, it just about has to be.

New Zealand vs India 2nd ODI Preview Dream11 Prediction
Image credit: AFP. New Zealand vs India 2nd ODI Preview Dream11 – Kane Williamson has warned against knee-jerk reactions

Key to an India win

India’s bowling attack looks a well-oiled machine, but the challenge is repeating the consistency they showed in Napier. The partnership of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami is talked about almost as highly as India’s opening batting combination right now, as they have set the tone beautifully in each of their four ODIs across Australia and New Zealand. The key question is whether they can get the better of New Zealand’s openers again, giving Kohli the opportunity to attack and introduce his wrist spinners against Williamson and Taylor looking to set a platform. India, just as the case in Napier, will look to continue testing New Zealand’s ability to keep the scoreboard ticking, and if the home side can’t get going, they might very well rip through their middle order again.

One area they will want to improve on is their catching, but if they don’t give New Zealand the chance to launch, say hello to 2-0.

Also, India would be very encouraged by Shikhar Dhawan’s fifty in Napier. He has been a little under par in ODIs dating back to the West Indies series at home. However, a player of his ability can’t be counted out. He will be key at the top, along with Rohit Sharma, in blunting Boult and Southee which can lift the pressure on New Zealand. We all know what Virat Kohli can do, and if India’s top three has a strong outing, India’s middle order is playing well enough in recent times to take advantage. A huge opportunity awaits to lay down another marker.

New Zealand vs India 2nd ODI Preview Dream11 Prediction
Image credit: AFP. New Zealand vs India 2nd ODI Preview Dream11 Prediction – Will Yuzvendra Chahal have another fine outing?

Possible Playing 11

Can’t see New Zealand panicking too much after one game, but one change they could make is bringing in Ish Sodhi. He took five wickets in two games against Sri Lanka at Mount Maunganui recently. Possibly Tim Southee to make way after Doug Bracewell played well in Napier?

New Zealand Possible Playing 11: 1. Martin Guptill, 2. Colin Munro, 3. Kane Williamson (c), 4. Ross Taylor, 5. Tom Latham (wk), 6. Henry Nicholls, 7. Mitchell Santner, 8. Doug Bracewell, 9. Tim Southee/Ish Sodhi, 10. Lockie Ferguson, 11. Trent Boult

It is very unlikely that India will experiment this soon. They have the chance to later in the series with Virat Kohli rested for the final two ODIs.

India Possible Playing 11: 1. Rohit Sharma, 2. Shikhar Dhawan, 3. Virat Kohli (c), 4. Ambati Rayudu, 5. MS Dhoni (wk), 6. Kedhar Jadhav, 7. Vijay Shankar, 8. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 9. Mohammed Shami, 10. Kuldeep Yadav, 11. Yuzvendra Chahal

Dream11 Prediction

New Zealand vs India 2nd ODI Preview Dream11 Prediction

Stats and Facts

  • New Zealand have won three and lost three of their six ODIs at Mount Maunganui.
  • India have won three ODIs on the bounce.
  • Kuldeep Yadav’s figures of 4/39 were the second best by an Indian spinner in New Zealand, behind Anil Kumble’s 5/33.

Match Prediction

I will put my hand up and say I tipped New Zealand to win the first ODI.

However, it is hard to go past India after such an impressive performance on Wednesday. They are looking a good unit at the moment.

New Zealand vs India 2nd ODI Preview Dream11

South Africa vs Pakistan 3rd ODI Preview Dream11

South Africa vs Pakistan 3rd ODI Preview Dream11

A slightly disappointing feel.

This ODI series now has a distraction, after good, competitive cricket was the only item on the menu ahead of a World Cup. The ICC is currently investigating Sarfraz Ahmed after his taunt in the second ODI, which means he will be available for this game (as long as no verdict is handed beforehand). What mindset will he be in?

For South Africa, their cricketing mindset is something they will want to get right. Quinton de Kock and Dale Steyn return after being rested from the first two ODIs, and need to give the side a boost, despite the Proteas leveling the series in Durban. You get the feeling South Africa still have gaps to fill, but with plenty of talent at their disposal, they are capable. Will they take a 2-1 series lead?

It can be easy for Pakistan to focus on issues other than cricket at the moment, but this is where Sarfraz Ahmed needs to lead from the front. That the PCB have merely put out a statement is perhaps conversation for another forum, but Sarfraz will need to have his side focused and ready to perform as best he can. He can come in for criticism regarding his captaincy even at the best of times, so how he responds here will be key. Can Pakistan have a better outing and recapture their series lead?

South Africa vs Pakistan 3rd ODI Preview Dream11 Prediction
South Africa vs Pakistan 3rd ODI Preview Dream11 – Sarfraz Ahmed has to keep full focus on the 3rd ODI

Key to a South Africa win

South Africa have a gem. Rassie van der Dussen, in just his second ODI, held his nerve to get the Proteas home in Durban. However, that South Africa allowed for a situation where Dussen and Andile Phehlukwayo were required to play big knocks (with some luck involved, too) is cause for improvement. Quinton de Kock will be key at the top, and will be looking to continue on from his Test form. Hashim Amla has shown he is in decent touch, and will also be crucial in blunting Pakistan at the top, paving the way for the likes of Dussen, Faf du Plessis, David Miller and Andile Phehlukwayo to build a strong score.

Also, can the Proteas cause more problems for the Pakistan batsmen? In what will make one of the finest romantic movies, Dale Steyn is reunited with his love, Mohammad Hafeez, of whom he has dismissed 15 times in 28 innings across formats. South Africa’s attack was way too good for Pakistan’s top order in Durban, and how they utilise the short ball in Centurion conditions likely to offer bounce is key. Kagiso Rabada, along with Steyn and expected debutant Beuran Hendricks will look to expose the Pakistan middle order early to spin, and then clean up the tail better, which the Proteas weren’t able to do in Durban thanks to Hasan Ali’s brilliant effort. Andile Phehlukwayo put together one of the finest all-round efforts you’ll see in Durban, and he will be key again in offering Faf du Plessis important balance and performance.

South Africa vs Pakistan 3rd ODI Preview Dream11
Image Credit: Getty Images. South Africa vs Pakistan 3rd ODI Preview Dream11 – Will Quinton de Kock & Hashim Amla dominate?

Key to a Pakistan win

Everyone knows what’s coming Pakistan’s way in Centurion. Their struggles against the short ball are still there for everyone to see.. Fakhar Zaman has not fired since Zimbabwe, and has to with his spot under scrutiny and his side needing a strong start. Imam-ul-Haq, who played well in the first ODI, will also be key, but how he and Babar Azam play the short ball after cheap dismissals in Durban will be key. Can Pakistan lay a platform for Shoaib Malik who loves Centurion? Can Mohammad Hafeez overcome his Dale Steyn struggles? Will Sarfraz Ahmed bat at six where his side needs him, and deliver amid the circumstances?

With the ball, Pakistan have reasons for encouragement. They were right in the game in Durban due to their young-gun Shaheen Shah Afridi ripping through South Africa’s top order, and similar is needed in Centurion. This South Africa side is still calling for top six to deliver consistently after shaky moments against Zimbabwe and Australia recently, so Pakistan have the opportunity to pounce. The wicket of in-form Quinton de Kock will be key, along with Hashim Amla and the excellent Rassie van der Dussen. Can Pakistan expose early the likes of Faf du Plessis and David Miller, forcing them to do plenty of rebuilding work?

South Africa vs Pakistan 3rd ODI Preview Dream11 Prediction
South Africa vs Pakistan 3rd ODI Preview Dream11 – Will Shoaib Malik have a big game for Pakistan?

Possible Playing 11

Quinton de Kock and Dale Steyn will slot back into South Africa’s XI. Seamer Beuran Hendricks is set to make his debut. Heinrich Klaasen, Duanne Olivier and Dane Paterson are out.

South Africa Possible Playing 11: 1. Quinton de Kock (wk), 2. Hashim Amla, 3. Reeza Hendricks, 4. Rassie van der Dussen, 5. Faf du Plessis (c), 6. David Miller, 7. Andile Phehlukwayo, 8. Kagiso Rabada, 9. Dale Steyn, 10. Beuran Hendricks, 11. Tabraiz Shamsi

Sarfraz Ahmed is set to play and captain Pakistan as the ICC investigate the incident in Durban. Pakistan will be after a better performance, but might guard against too many changes.

Pakistan Possible Playing 11: 1. Imam-ul-Haq, 2. Fakhar Zaman, 3. Babar Azam, 4. Mohammad Hafeez, 5. Shoaib Malik, 6. Sarfraz Ahmed (c & wk), 7. Shadab Khan, 8. Hussain Talat, 9. Faheem Ashraf, 10. Hasan Ali, 11. Shaheen Shah Afridi

Dream11 Prediction

South Africa vs Pakistan 3rd ODI Preview Dream11 Prediction
South Africa vs Pakistan 3rd ODI Preview Dream11 Prediction
  • Quinton de Kock is coming off a fine Test series, and has an outstanding record at Centurion (four centuries in seven ODIs). He has 562 runs at 80.28.
  • Hashim Amla also has a strong record at Centurion. In fact, he is the leading run scorer at the ground. Rassie van der Dussen, after leaving him out last match, is too good to ignore.
  • Faf du Plessis and David Miller have underwhelming records at Centurion, and haven’t fired yet this series. Du Plessis has 168 runs in seven matches, averaging 28. Miller has 138 runs at 27.60.
  • Shoaib Malik loves Centurion (242 runs at 121.00 in four ODIs).
  • Pick Mohammad Hafeez if you wish to take a risk. Dale Steyn is back, and has dismissed Hafeez five times for 58 runs in ODIs. Andile Phehlukwayo is coming off a career best performance, scoring 69* and 4/22.
  • Kagiso Rabada has just four wickets in five ODIs at Centurion, but a fine bowler can’t be written off. Pakistan’s struggles against the short ball makes him an effective option.
  • Shadab Khan has been solid with the ball this series (three wickets).

Stats and Facts

  • Kagiso Rabada needs five wickets to reach 100 in ODIs.
  • South Africa have beaten Pakistan in three of the last five ODIs at Centurion.
  • South Africa, with their win at Durban, broke a three match losing streak vs Asian opposition in home ODIs.

Match Prediction

Important game for both sides as the series will go past its midway point.

I expect South Africa to win on a pitch expected to have good bounce, on the back of a strong effort from de Kock, Amla and the bowlers.

Perth Scorchers vs Sydney Thunder Preview Dream11

Perth Scorchers vs Sydney Thunder Preview Dream11

Is this it for the pre-tournament favourites? Could we see the men in orange still be stuck in last position after ten matches?

Not many could have predicted perennial achievers Perth Scorchers would be in this position. Their season is just about on the line, sitting four points adrift of fourth placed Melbourne Stars. With a game in hand over the Stars, the Scorchers receive a timely boost with the Marsh brothers and Jason Behrendhorff returning, and have to fire right away in a crunch game. Can the Scorchers bounce back after an unbelievable last-gasp loss to the Hurricanes last Friday?

Sydney Thunder are also in a tight predicament. Following a very unlucky no result last week at the Gabba, the Thunder put in a disappointing display two nights ago against the Renegades, leaving them one point outside the top four. A win here puts them back into the playoffs places, lifting the pressure on the likes of the Stars and Strikers, but they will have to perform well in Perth, a place where they haven’t been particularly great in the past.

Key to a Perth Scorchers win

Much has been made of the Scorchers’ lack of batting prowess in BBL08. The return of the Marsh brothers, particularly in-form Shaun, is a big boost to the Scorchers. Cameron Bancroft, despite a last-start duck, has been in fine form, and he and Michael Klinger will be key in delivering a strong start for the Scorchers. The home side need the complete opposite start to their last, falling to 7/3 against the Hurricanes, before the middle order, led by Sam Whiteman (who’s out injured), staged a recovery. Here, a platform needs to be set for Ashton Turner, the Marsh brothers and Hilton Cartwright to get the Scorchers to a strong total.

Also, can the Scorchers get Shane Watson out early? The Renegades were able to two nights ago, which turned out to be a huge wicket, despite the efforts of Callum Ferguson and Jason Sangha. Jason Behrendhorff has been strong in the powerplay overs this season, meaning his battle with Watson could be crucial to the result. With this Scorchers attack very good on its day, powerplay wickets might be too much for the Thunder to come back from. Can the likes of Nathan Coulter-Nile and Andrew Tye build pressure on the Sydney Thunder at all stages of the innings? Can Tye in particular bounce back at the death, after a fatal three balls against the Hurricanes? All to play for.

Key to a Sydney Thunder win

The Thunder had their moments with bat and ball two nights ago against the Renegades, but ultimately couldn’t sustain it for long enough. They restricted the Renegades to 51/3 after nine overs, and if they can repeat the good start against the Scorchers, they can back themselves to learn from their errors. Gurinder Sandhu was excellent, and will be key tonight on a pitch that might offer extra bounce, along with Daniel Sams and Chris Jordan. With the Scorchers’ batting up and down in BBL08, a great opportunity awaits the Thunder to pounce.

Also, can Shane Watson occupy the crease for a considerable period of time in this one? It is no coincidence that with Watson firing in the two games previous to the Renegades (68 and 100), the Thunder won one and were well on track to win the other. He has the experience and form to set up the innings, allowing the likes of Anton Devcich, Callum Ferguson and Jason Sangha to build on his good work. With Daniel Sams and Chris Green adept finishers, the onus is on the Thunder top order to get the better of a good Scorchers’ attack on paper.

Possible Playing 11

Shaun Marsh, Mitchell Marsh and Jason Behrendhorff are all back in the Scorchers’ 13-man squad. Aaron Hardie, Sam Whiteman, David Willey and Will Bosisto are out.

Perth Scorchers Possible Playing 11: 1. Cameron Bancroft (wk), 2. Michael Klinger, 3. Shaun Marsh, 4. Ashton Turner, 5. Mitchell Marsh (c), 6. Hilton Cartwright, 7. Matt Kelly/Nick Hobson, 8. Nathan Coulter-Nile, 9. Usman Qadir, 10. AJ Tye, 11. Jason Behrendhorff

Jay Lenton is out for Sydney Thunder (one of a few changes), with Matthew Gilkes and Baxter Holt named in the squad. Gilkes will likely play and keep.

Sydney Thunder Possible Playing 11: 1. Shane Watson (c), 2. Anton Devcich, 3. Callum Ferguson, 4. Jason Sangha, 5. Matthew Gilkes (wk), 6. Daniel Sams, 7. Chris Green, 8. Chris Jordan, 9. Nathan McAndrew/Sam Rainbird, 10. Gurinder Sandhu, 11. Fawad Ahmed

Dream11 Prediction

Perth Scorchers vs Sydney Thunder Preview Dream11 Prediction

Stats and Facts

  • Perth Scorchers have won five of the last eight games vs Sydney Thunder.
  • Sydney Thunder beat Perth Scorchers by one run earlier this year.
  • Andrew Tye has taken eight wickets in his last three BBL games.

Match Prediction

Perth Scorchers have put together much improved performances in recent games.

At home, they still look a strong side, and will welcome back the in-form Shaun Marsh. Scorchers to win.

Australia vs Sri Lanka 1st Test Preview

Australia vs Sri Lanka 1st Test Preview

Day-Night Test Cricket returns to Australia as Sri Lanka is the latest side to try add further misery to Australia.

It has indeed been a miserable 10 months for Australia. With no series wins since the Cape Town incident, the situation is getting pretty desperate, which has been the catalyst for changes in the Test side. Two debutants will take the field in Brisbane, with arguably Australia’s best chance of winning a series, hosting a side that had never won a Test down under.

However, Sri Lanka won’t have many better chances to do so. They have expressed their belief at achieving what India did, but whether they can play the moving ball effectively, as well as move the ball for prolonged periods themselves, will be key things to watch out for. They had their moments in the recent Test series against New Zealand, but not for long enough, which is something to address in Australia. Will they cause !an upset?

Key to an Australia win

There is no doubt Australia are favourites, but there is also no doubt that there are a number of things the Australians must improve on from their series against India. For starters, no player scored a century, despite 29 scores of 20 or more from the top seven, which puts the onus on the batting line up to show appetite for the long innings. Joe Burns returns after a fine run in First Class cricket, scoring 1,073 runs in his last 10 matches. Kurtis Patterson is coming off a superb tour game. Usman Khawaja needs to deliver, and Marcus Harris and Travis Head had their moments against India. Will there be centuries, and will it be a collective batting display that keeps the Sri Lankans at bay?

Also, what damage can Australia do with the pink ball? The night sessions in humid Brisbane promises to be very challenging for batting, so strong technique and patience is important not only for the batsmen, but the bowlers, too. Mitchell Starc struggled against India, with his wrist position all over the place, the catalyst for his lack of swing. He will be crucial against Sri Lanka, along with new co-Vice Captain Pat Cummins and debutant Jhye Richardson in hurting Sri Lanka’s quest for a strong total. The likes of Dimuth Karunaratne, Kusal Mendis and Dinesh Chandimal have played well of late, and Australia’s seamers, along with Nathan Lyon, need to get the better of them.

Key to a Sri Lanka win

Sri Lanka struggled badly when the ball moved around in New Zealand, bundled out for 282 and 104 respectively in the first innings of the two Tests. They were three down for not many twice in the first Test of that series, and must avoid that here to ensure the middle order, without Angelo Mathews, is not exposed too much. With batting under lights to be a challenge, it is crucial Sri Lanka have at least one set player, if possible, heading into that period. If they are to bat straight away under lights, solid technique and fight is crucial. If the likes of Dimuth Karunaratne, Kusal Mendis and Dinesh Chandimal can have strong outings, Sri Lanka will be competitive.

Also, will Suranga Lakmal lead from the front? Can Sri Lanka keep their lines and lengths in order against a side that has shown to struggle in converting starts? If the Sri Lankans indeed wish to follow what India did, they will have to be as disciplined with the ball as the Indians were. Discipline, consistency and movement will be crucial for Sri Lanka, who fell off the rails against New Zealand at most times, highlighting they can bowl well for periods, but not sustained long enough. At the Gabba, bowling in partnerships will be crucial to their success.

Possible Playing 11

Australia have named their XI. Joe Burns returns. Kurtis Patterson and Jhye Richardson will make their debuts. Travis Head and Pat Cummins are the co-Vice Captains.

Australia team: 1. Joe Burns, 2. Marcus Harris, 3. Usman Khawaja, 4. Marnus Labuschagne, 5. Travis Head, 6. Kurtis Patterson, 7. Tim Paine (c & wk), 8. Pat Cummins, 9. Mitchell Starc, 10. Jhye Richardson, 11. Nathan Lyon

For Sri Lanka, Lahiru Thirimanne is likely to open with Dimuth Karunaratne. Dushmantha Chameera and Lahiru Kamara are expected to partner Suranga Lakmal in the pace attack.

Sri Lanka possible playing 11: 1. Dimuth Karunaratne, 2. Lahiru Thirimanne, 3. Dinesh Chandimal (c), 4. Kusal Mendis, 5. Roshen Silva, 6. Dhananjaya de Silva, 7. Niroshan Dickwella, 8. Dilruwan Perera, 9. Suranga Lakmal, 10. Dushmantha Chameera, 11. Lahiru Kamara

Australia vs Sri Lanka 1st Test Preview
Australia vs Sri Lanka 1st Test Preview – Can Mitch Starc have a better series?

Stats and Facts

  • Australia have never lost a Test at home vs Sri Lanka.
  • Sri Lanka lost by an innings and 201 runs the last time they played a Test at the Gabba.
  • Kurtis Patterson averages 65 in 14 innings in D/N First Class Cricket.

Match Prediction

Australia have had a tough run of late but I expect them to win this game, with Sri Lanka to be hurting from the loss of Angelo Mathews.

Australia to win and take a 1-0 series lead.

A first glance at England’s Test tour of the Caribbean might bring thoughts of a one-sided contest.

However, this Test series begins with one of the more unlikely unbeaten records, with West Indies not losing to England at home since 2004. The Windies’ recent Test form is awful, easily losing four Tests across tours of India and Bangladesh, but their home form before that made for encouraging viewing. With Windies Test Cricket ailing more and more these days, this is an opportunity to spark some life against a side looking to continue its own good form.

England take the field in the first Test having won just one of their last seven Tests in the Caribbean. However, there is a renewed sense of optimism ahead of a huge year – that also includes home World Cup and Ashes campaigns – after five straight wins, including an eye-catching 3-0 win away to Sri Lanka. Can England inflict further misery on West Indies and claim their first series win on these shores in nearly 15 years?

Key to West Indies win

Oh Jason Holder. Sweet Jason Holder.

West Indies’ inspirational captain is back, and boy did the Windies miss him whilst injured during their tour of Asia. He will be crucial with the ball, possessing the ability to get the ball moving in long spells to keep the pressure on England. However, the onus will also be on Shannon Gabriel and Kemar Roach to extract life out of what is expected to be a sluggish Barbados track. Can the seamers make inroads into the England top order, giving them an early as possible shot at the middle order? What impact will the spinners have? With England possessing a long batting line up, consistency and persistence is key for the Windies.

Also, the batting effort of the Windies will be crucial to how they fare in this Test. Shai Hope has very fond memories of England, and will be key here, along with Kraigg Brathwaite, Roston Chase and the returning Darren Bravo. England will feel confident they have an attack capable of producing the goods on the Barbados track, so how the Windies counter pace and spin, and whether they are in the mood to stick it out for the long haul, will be crucial. If Jason Holder walks in with a strong platform set, it will be a positive place to be.

Key to an England win

England played with great self belief in Sri Lanka, and will have to show the same in the Caribbean against a side who have Jason Holder back. They have an excellent mixture of youth and experience, and the long batting lineup has the potential to cause significant pain to the Windies. The top seven, particularly the openers, Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root will be key in snuffing out any Windies enthusiasm early, paving the way for the two Ben’s – Stokes and Foakes – to continue on the strong effort. With Sam Curran likely to bat as low as nine if picked, England have the resources to score big. Will it come to fruition?

Also, what was impressive in Sri Lanka from an England perspective was the effort all-round with the ball. Spin played a huge role in that series, and could be key here again with the conditions expected. Can Moeen Ali have a better time of things than his last visit to Barbados? What movement can James Anderson extract? Can England build the pressure further on Jason Holder? A great opportunity awaits.

Possible Playing 11

Jason Holder returns for the West Indies, and so too Darren Bravo after a two year exodus.

England could go in with two spinners, with Stuart Broad likely to miss out.

England Possible Playing 11: 1. Rory Burns, 2. Keaton Jennings, 3. Jonny Bairstow, 4. Joe Root (c), 5. Ben Stokes, 6. Jos Buttler, 7. Ben Foakes (wk), 8. Moeen Ali, 9. Sam Curran, 10. Jack Leach, 11. James Anderson

Sydney Sixers vs Hobart Hurricanes Preview Dream11

Sydney Sixers vs Hobart Hurricanes Preview Dream11 Prediction

It is surely now confirmed. Beat Hobart Hurricanes, and you can consider yourself a serious contender for the BBL08 Title.

That’s the huge task ahead of Sydney Sixers today. They bounced back beautifully against Brisbane Heat, thrashing them with ease after they were thrashed by Melbourne Renegades a few days earlier. However, the Sixers should feel they can go to another level, and they have no choice but to tonight, facing a side that is absolutely flying.

Hobart Hurricanes are indeed flying. They absolutely humiliated Adelaide Strikers, the defending champions, on their own turf, and that too after a tough away trip to Perth. Another challenging road trip awaits with the Sixers capable of turning it on, but confidence is sky high in the Hurricanes camp right now, and they have the chance to all but confirm their appearance in the BBL08 semi finals with games to spare.

Key to a Sydney Sixers win

James Vince and Jordan Silk fired nicely against the Heat, but the Sixers need more from skipper Moises Henriques, who continues to underwhelm. A total of 177 on the back of two strong individual efforts against Brisbane Heat is often enough given the Heat’s top heavy lineup, but a more collective batting display is crucial against a Hurricanes side that possesses in form opening and middle order batsmen. Daniel Hughes will be key to delivering a strong start, along with Vince, Henriques and Silk, to ensure that the batting powerplay problems of BBL08 don’t reappear for the Sixers.

Also, can the Sixers attack get the better of the Hurricanes’ top order? They were excellent in bowling the Heat out for less than 100, but a tougher test awaits, with the Hurricanes in tremendous form. Sean Abbott and Tom Curran were strong against the Heat, and will be two crucial bowlers in keeping the pressure on the Hurricanes lineup, along with spinners Steve O’Keefe and Lloyd Pope. If the Sixers can outplay the Hurricanes in the powerplay overs, it just might be their night.

Key to a Hobart Hurricanes win

Matthew Wade and D’Arcy Short flicked Adelaide Strikers aside as if they were nothing. Coming off an incredible win against the defending champions, the challenge for the Hurricanes will be to back up well just 48 hours later, in a string of away games that also included Perth last Friday evening. Wade and Short will be key in keeping a good Sixers attack at bay, creating a platform for the likes of Ben McDermott and George Bailey to pounce. The Hurricanes have the chance to pile the pressure on the Sixers, and a strong batting effort is a good avenue to success.

Also, the return to form of Jofra Archer would have been pleasing to all associated with the Hurricanes. He was excellent against the Strikers, and will be required to lead the way again against a side that has tended to lose early wickets in BBL08. Along with Riley Meredith and James Faulkner, the Hurricanes possess a pace attack that has the potential to re-open the Sixers’ powerplay wounds, and if they can, another victory is just about all but confirmed.

Possible Playing 11

Sydney Sixers have named an unchanged squad from their thumping victory over Brisbane Heat.

Sydney Sixers Possible Playing 11: 1. Daniel Hughes, 2. Josh Phillipe (wk), 3. James Vince, 4. Moises Henriques (c), 5. Jordan Silk, 6. Jack Edwards, 7. Tom Curran, 8. Sean Abbott, 9. Steve O’Keefe, 10. Ben Dwarshuis, 11. Lloyd Pope

Hobart Hurricanes have also named an unchanged squad from their thrashing of Adelaide Strikers.

Hobart Hurricanes Possible Playing 11: 1. Matthew Wade (c & wk), 2. D’Arcy Short, 3. Caleb Jewell, 4. Ben McDermott, 5. George Bailey, 6. Simon Milenko, 7. James Faulkner, 8. Johan Botha, 9. Jofra Archer, 10. Clive Rose, 11. Riley Meredith

Australia vs Sri Lanka Test Series: 3 things Australia must do

Australia vs Sri Lanka Test Series: 3 things Australia must do

Australia’s best chance for a series win since Cape Town is here. England, Pakistan, South Africa and India across formats represented very tough tests that Australia couldn’t quite pass, and they begin the Sri Lanka series as strong favourites.

However, Australia and Tim Paine will need to do more than ask Niroshan Dickwella if he would like to babysit. Or if he would like to play for Hobart Hurricanes, or that you possibly can’t like Dinesh Chandimal as a bloke.

This is a series, as short as it is, where Australia need to start getting back into good habits. Sri Lanka will walk onto the Gabba believing they can do the job, and given Australia’s lack of application at times against India, nothing is out of the question.

Australia, to improve the mood among fans, not only must win this series, but also go about it in clinical fashion. Here are three key things Australia must focus on.

Show hunger with the bat: convert starts

Australia’s top seven had 29 scores of over 20 in the recent Test series against India. None of them were converted to centuries. India had five. In fact, Marcus Harris’ score of 79 in Sydney was the highest score – the lowest highest score for Australia in a series in 100 years.

Much is made about Sri Lanka’s lack of bowling punch compared to India. However, if Australia aren’t hungry for runs, Sri Lanka will always be a chance. One particular example in the India series was Travis Head – Australia’s second leading scorer for the series – playing a loose drive in Melbourne after batting for 95 balls. Footwork was non-existent, and bat was away from the body, with head position nowhere near over the ball. It was a shot you’d see early in an innings, not after 95 balls.

Australia need to begin rectifying the lack of temperament on display vs India, with a focus on converting starts and making big centuries. With Kurtis Patterson in terrific form in the lead up, he could be tasked with leading the way in his debut series.

Be ruthless with the ball – focus on greater efficiency

Sri Lanka might not have Cheteshwar Pujara or Virat Kohli, but they still possess capable cricketers.

Australia lacked penetration at times against India, especially in the last two Tests, showing a complete inability to get the ball moving. With the series kicking off with the pink ball, Australia must emphasise good seam position, which was of scarce occurrence in the recent series. Eyes will be on Mitchell Starc, who was well under par against India, to get the ball swinging again with the new ball. His wrist position wasn’t right in the four Tests against India, and this is a chance to get it right.

Also, with Pat Cummins and Peter Siddle/Jhye Richardson making up the pace attack, Australia need to focus on bowling fuller with surprise short balls, rather than overdoing the short ball.

No complacency

All the talk is about how Australia are favourites. However, this Aussie side is in no position to think this will be an easy win.

The batsmen need to play the ball late, and show appetite for the long innings. The bowlers need to be ruthless with their execution.

This is a good opportunity to break the winless drought, but the way Australia go about it will also determine the mood at series’ end.

Melbourne Stars vs Adelaide Strikers Preview Dream11

Melbourne Stars vs Adelaide Strikers Preview Dream11

Wednesday afternoon BBL action in country Victoria. It is an exciting day for the people of Moe, and another important clash in the race for the BBL08 top four.

Melbourne Stars welcomed back their ODI representatives for their Melbourne Derby clash against the Renegades on Saturday, and it was Marcus Stoinis who was unstoppable. It was a crucial victory for the Stars, arresting a three-match losing run, and resurrecting their finals hopes in the process. They play a side looking to arrest their own slide, and will want to give the people of Moe something positive to remember in the race to the finals.

The side looking to arrest their slide is defending champions Adelaide Strikers. They will take the field less than 48 hours after they were utterly humiliated by the Hobart Hurricanes, which can be a positive, giving the Strikers the opportunity to put a poor night behind them. Their bowling looks a little toothless at the moment, and their batting inconsistent, but as the table remains tight, a win or two puts you right back in the mix. Now is the time for the Strikers to fire.

Key to a Melbourne Stars win

The Melbourne Stars’ attack looks so much more potent with the all-rounders in the side. Marcus Stoinis provided so much quality with the ball against the Renegades, but was part of a brilliant bowling effort where all the other bowlers, bar Tom O’Connell, were in the wickets. In Liam Plunkett, Jackson Bird, Adam Zampa and Dwayne Bravo, along with Stoinis, the Stars have wicket taking ability, and can look to take advantage of a Strikers side struggling a little with the bat. Powerplay wickets are key, especially that of Alex Carey, and then Colin Ingram, the Strikers’ most in form batsman.

Also, can the Stars put together just as cohesive a batting performance? They seemed to rely significantly on Stoinis against the Renegades, who will of course be key again, but also need more from the likes of Ben Dunk, Glenn Maxwell, Nic Maddinson and Peter Handscomb. The Strikers’ attack are coming off a wicketless night, so the opportunity is there for the Stars to pounce. Will they?

Melbourne Stars vs Adelaide Strikers Preview Dream11 Prediction
Image credit: Getty Images. Melbourne Stars vs Adelaide Strikers Preview Dream11: Marcus Stoinis will again be key for the Strikers.

Key to an Adelaide Strikers win

The Strikers have hit a wall, and desperately need their batsmen to step up. They were rolled for 97 against Sydney Thunder a week-and-a-half ago, and then would have even been more under par against the Hurricanes had it not been for Colin Ingram. Alex Carey, a player who threatened to get going against the Hurricanes, must get going here, along with Jake Weatherald who needs to shift the early momentum the Strikers’ way. A solid start against a good Stars attack is crucial, to pave the way for the in-form Colin Ingram to pounce and shepherd the middle order well.

Also, the Strikers’ bowlers must bounce back. They have little reason not to be motivated, as they come up against a side with a good batting lineup, like the Hurricanes. A good start from the likes of Billy Stanlake, Michael Neser and Rashid Khan will be key, because if they start poorly, confidence can continue to fall. An early wicket, especially the one of Marcus Stoinis, could have the Strikers on their way. With Ben Laughlin a key man at the death, the Strikers have the chance to set things up well with accurate bowling right through the innings.

Number two in the world rankings takes on number three. Two sides widely expected to be in the top four come World Cup Semi Final time, and this series promises to be an absolute beauty.

No side in world cricket has a better record at home since the 2015 World Cup than New Zealand. With a fine balance of power and panache, the Black Caps possess a side than can certainly give a strong India side a run for their money. Their top four is as dangerous as any side in the world, and they have the chance to flex their muscle at home against strong opposition. Can New Zealand make a big statement early in the series?

India, in a World Cup year, will be looking for a much better ODI series than their last visit to New Zealand. They have an opportunity to show how far they have come as a team since the 4-0 drubbing in 2014, and will need to play a little better than they did at times in their very recent series against Australia. Just as New Zealand have the chance to lay down a marker, so do India, with a superb shootout between two fine teams on the cards. Will India kick off their tour with a win?

Key to a New Zealand win

Most of New Zealand’s top four and Henry Nicholls were too strong for Sri Lanka recently, but they will face a bigger challenge this time around. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami will sure be a challenge at the top for New Zealand’s openers, and whether Munro and Guptill can fare better than Aaron Finch and Alex Carey did for Australia will be key. With Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor, who is arguably in career best form, to follow, New Zealand have the resources to set a fine platform for the middle order to launch. However, Tom Latham and Henry Nicholls are likely to occupy numbers five and six respectively, so their ability to either take advantage of the top order’s work or rebuild will be crucial. Will they be able to score quickly at will if need be?

Also, New Zealand’s bowling at times against Sri Lanka left a little to be desired. India possess the best top three in the world, so the onus is on Trent Boult and Tim Southee (if picked) to get New Zealand off to a strong start. As Australia found, dismissing at least two of India’s top three relatively cheaply puts you right in the game, and with India’s middle order still under the microscope, New Zealand will be best served challenging them as soon as possible. Can the likes of Ish Sodhi and Mitchell Santner also work effectively as a unit to keep the pressure on India in the crucial middle overs? Also, can New Zealand improve on their displays at the death? A challenging, but exciting test awaits.

New Zealand vs India 1st ODI Preview Dream11 Prediction
New Zealand vs India 1st ODI Preview Dream11 Prediction – Ross Taylor has been outstanding in ODIs since the 2015 World Cup

Key to an India win

MS Dhoni’s excellent series in Australia would have given all associated with India plenty of encouragement. There is little doubt that India’s top three will be vital again, given they have contributed to 52% of the team’s runs in all ODIs since the World Cup in 2015, but how well India play as a unit will be key. Rohit Sharma will be out to improve his record against New Zealand, and Shikhar Dhawan his form of late. The battle between the two opening pairs could be key to the result, as the likes of Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, Kedar Jadhav and Dinesh Karthik would benefit significantly from a strong start. With all four of these players showing excellent form in the recent series against Australia, India will be hoping to really fine tune their batting lineup ahead of the World Cup.

With the ball, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami will be key for India. They were superb in the Australia series, taking 13 wickets between them, placing significant pressure on Australia’s openers. Virat Kohli would love to target Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor as early as possible, which can set up the middle overs period nicely for India, possibly giving them a shot at New Zealand’s middle order with no real platform set. The performance of India’s spinners will be crucial to building further pressure on New Zealand, and if the Indians can keep things tight on Henry Nicholls and Tom Latham as they look to launch, it can go a long way to victory.

New Zealand vs India 1st ODI Preview Dream11 Prediction
Image credit: AP Photo/James Elsby. New Zealand vs India 1st ODI Preview Dream11 Prediction – Can MS Dhoni build on his good Australia series?

Possible Playing 11

Tom Latham returns after being rested for the Sri Lanka series, and will slot in the middle order. With Jimmy Neesham still injured, Mitchell Santner will occupy the main allrounder slot.

New Zealand Possible Playing 11: 1. Martin Guptill, 2. Colin Munro, 3. Kane Williamson (c), 4. Ross Taylor, 5. Tom Latham (wk), 6. Henry Nicholls, 7. Mitchell Santner, 8. Doug Bracewell/Lockie Ferguson, 9. Tim Southee, 10. Ish Sodhi, 11. Trent Boult

For India, the big question will be who makes up the final spot in their bowling attack. Ravindra Jadeja’s ability to take wickets in New Zealand conditions comes into question, with Kuldeep Yadav or Khaleel Ahmed in line for a game.

India Possible Playing 11: 1. Rohit Sharma, 2. Shikhar Dhawan, 3. Virat Kohli (c), 4. MS Dhoni (wk), 5. Kedar Jadhav, 6. Dinesh Karthik, 7. Vijay Shankar, 8. Ravindra Jadeja/Kuldeep Yadav, 9. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10. Mohammed Shami, 11. Yuzvendra Chahal

  • MS Dhoni has an absolutely outstanding record in New Zealand, and is coming off a big performance in Australia, where he scored three straight fifties. In New Zealand, Dhoni has 541 runs at 90. At McLean Park in Napier, Dhoni has 124 runs in two matches, including 84*.
  • Ross Taylor is second only to Virat Kohli since World Cup 2015. In his last 12 innings, he has been dismissed for less than 50 just twice.
  • Shikhar Dhawan has an ordinary record against New Zealand, scoring just 172 runs in seven matches at 24.57. The same applies to Martin Guptill against India, averaging less than 30 in 26 games.
  • Rohit Sharma has got out to Tim Southee five times in ODIs, but he is in good touch.
  • Virat Kohli has played one ODI at McLean Park, scoring 123. He has a superb record against New Zealand, scoring 1,154 runs at 73.
  • Kedar Jadhav offers plenty for India with both bat and ball. He is coming off a fine 61* against Australia.
  • Yuzvendra Chahal is coming off six wickets against Australia, and even though Napier is expected to turn less, Chahal is capable of middle order wickets.
  • Doug Bracewell is a chance of playing giving his all-round abilities.
  • Tim Southee has an awful record at McLean Park, taking just five wickets in nine ODIs at an average of 97.20.
New Zealand vs India 1st ODI Preview Dream11 Prediction
New Zealand vs India 1st ODI Preview Dream11 Prediction – Can Virat Kohli outplay his opposition number Kane Williamson?

Stats and Facts

  • New Zealand beat India 4-0 in 2014.
  • New Zealand have the best home record of any side at home since World Cup 2015 (75% win rate).
  • Shikhar Dhawan needs 10 runs to become the 13th Indian player to reach 5,000 in ODIs.
  • Mohammed Shami needs one wicket to reach 100 in ODIs.
  • Ross Taylor’s dot ball percentage of 43.2% is the lowest of any batsman since beginning of 2018. His last six ODI scores read: 181*, 80, 86*, 54 and 137. If he gets a fifty in this game, he will become the second player in history to get seven fifty-plus scores in ODIs.

Match Prediction

What a match this promises to be.

Two good sides makes this one a tough pick, but on the back of excellent performances from Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor, New Zealand might take this one out in a close match.
