Think of an intense exercise. Full throttle for a while, sweating it out in non-stop physical activity. What follows is the cool down period, and final stretches to help the body recover.

This T20I series is exactly that. It is a chance for England to recover from underwhelming Test and ODI series. They were expected to leave the Caribbean with a number of trophies, but now risk leaving without a series win in any format. Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes and Moeen Ali have been rested ahead of IPL 2019, which provides opportunities for a number of players to stake their claim.

West Indies, somewhat surprisingly, have stuck mainly with their ODI side. Jason Holder is set to play his first T20I in two years – and captain it – which is a clear effort from the Windies to keep their ODI side playing together. Of course, T20Is are no preparation for a 50-over World Cup, but seeing England leave the Caribbean with no series win would be some feeling. Will it be more joy for the Windies?

Key to a West Indies win

England’s bowlers can’t escape from Chris Gayle just yet. Man of the series in the ODIs, Gayle often played as if it was a T20I, nonchalantly smashing 37 sixes in the series. He has the quality – and form – to create carnage in the powerplay overs, and force England to chase their tail throughout the innings. Also, spotlight will be on the likes of John Campbell, Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer. They all had their moments in the ODI series, but could have delivered a little more, which makes their contributions an interesting prospect in the quest for a big total.

Also, can West Indies rip through England with the ball again? Bowling England out for 113 a few days after conceding 418 is one of the most remarkable turnarounds you’ll ever see. Oshane Thomas and Sheldon Cottrell were strong in the ODIs, and Carlos Brathwaite was the only bowler of either side to go under six an over. Along with Jason Holder, the Windies have a seam attack that is capable of getting wickets. However, can they force dot balls to heap further pressure on England. What role will Devendra Bishoo play, after an awful ODI series? England have rested players, but power remains, placing onus on the Windies’ bowlers to be disciplined with the ball and bowl to their fields.

West Indies vs England 1st T20I Preview Dream11: Chris Gayle had an ODI series to remember.

Key to an England win

England have absentees, but their expected side still contains plenty of danger players. Alex Hales further proved his worth in the ODIs, and will be a key man at the top. Joe Root has vowed to improve in this format, and the in-form Eoin Morgan will be a key cog in the middle order. With Sam Billings and Jonny Bairstow excellent white ball players, and Dawid Malan keen to prove a point, a strong powerplay has the potential to be turned into a strong total.

Also, what can the maligned England attack deliver? The likes of Tom Curran, Chris Jordan and David Willey arguably have a chance to stake their claim for time in the ODI side, given how England struggled with the ball in the recent series. The wicket of Chris Gayle early will be crucial, which can then be followed by a fruitful powerplay. If England can deliver early on, it sets the tone for the remainder of the innings, with pressure on the Windies middle-lower order to fire.

Possible Playing 11

Andre Russell flew from the PSL to be part of the Windies squad. However, his knee has flared up again, as it continues to give him problems.

West Indies: 1. Chris Gayle, 2. John Campbell, 3. Shai Hope (wk), 4. Darren Bravo, 5. Shimron Hetmyer, 6. Jason Holder (c), 7. Carlos Brathwaite, 8. Ashley Nurse, 9. Devendra Bishoo, 10. Sheldon Cottrell, 11. Oshane Thomas

Plenty of changes in the England camp, with the likes of Sam Billings, David Willey and Dawid Malan set to play. Incredibly, David Willey, a player who has opened many times in T20s, could bat at 11.

England: 1. Alex Hales, 2. Sam Billings, 3. Joe Root, 4. Eoin Morgan (c), 5. Dawid Malan, 6. Jonny Bairstow (wk), 7. Joe Denly, 8. Tom Curran, 9. Chris Jordan, 10. Adil Rashid, 11. David Willey

Match Prediction

There is not a huge deal of context to this series with the 50-over World Cup this year and the 20-over version next year.

However, we can expect some fireworks. West Indies look confident, and I will back them to take a 1-0 series lead.
