Ring the bell. It’s time for round two.

The first ODI between two hard-hitting sides promised plenty, and delivered the same, with hours of non-stop action setting the series up beautifully.

West Indies would have been scratching their heads wondering what might have been. They dropped chance after chance in their quest to take a 1-0 series lead, which didn’t allow them to take any semblance of control. A total of 360/8 is one all sides will be pleased with in most conditions, but on what is expected to be another batting paradise, the Windies must be more efficient with the ball and in the field.

England achieved their highest ever run chase in the first ODI. They did it with ease, reaching the target with eight balls to spare. That Jos Buttler was required to face just one ball is a strong message from England, highlighting their batting capabilities from the top right down. Their bowling remains an area for improvement, but if their batting fires, not many sides can stay with them. Will England win their 11th straight ODI against West Indies?

Key to a West Indies win

Chris Gayle scored a fine, whirlwind century, but Joe Root finished with a better strike rate. John Campbell and Shai Hope are two crucial players at the top as Gayle took his time early in the first ODI, and if he’s fit to go in the second, Campbell and Hope can help take advantage of the powerplay. With the Windies’ middle order showing an ability to hit big, the onus is on the top order to have another strong outing, paving the way for the likes of Shimron Hetmeyer, Darren Bravo and Ashley Nurse to play with plenty of freedom. Do the Windies have what it takes to score 350+ again if given the chance?

Also, can the Windies stem the England batting juggernaut? Jason Holder’s men must improve in the field after an awful effort just two days ago, albeit in windy conditions. West Indies were on the back foot from the powerplay, conceding 88, which is an area for improvement in the second ODI as they look to reduce the pressure on themselves. Can they create and take chances as England look to go hard early? What can Oshane Thomas and Jason Holder produce? Will Sheldon Cottrell be a better option for the Windies? With spin a wicket taking option, the performances of Devendra Bishoo and Ashley Nurse will also be key to the result.

Key to an England win

There is little doubt that when England’s batting fires, they will beat just about anyone in the world. Jason Roy and Joe Root were key players ahead of the first ODI after hundreds in the tour match, and they were brilliant on Wednesday, flattening the Windies through a great combination of power hitting and strike rotation. In the second ODI, England’s top four will again be key in raising the pressure on Jason Holder, providing the platform for another huge total as they bat so deep. Will it be another strong outing for England’s batsmen in a World Cup year?

However, Eoin Morgan will be keen for an improved bowling display. They conceded a world record 23 sixes in the first ODI, and given how strong their own batting is, a disciplined bowling effort can elevate them even further. Mark Wood is a player who will be out for a better outing, and so too Liam Plunkett (if picked) and Moeen Ali, in support of Chris Woakes and Ben Stokes who took a combined 5/96 in 18 overs. With competition for places strong on the bowling front, England’s bowlers need to be on point, especially against the Windies’ top order which can open the game up.
