How many more thrillers can Zimbabwe players and fans handle? Has the great Pommie Mbangwa lost his voice yet? What does their game against Netherlands have in store for us?
Craig Ervine’s team is now in must-win territory after their heartbreaking three-run loss to Bangladesh on Sunday. They can still qualify for the semi finals if they win this match and upset India on Sunday, but the focus needs to be squarely on performing well against a Dutch team looking for a win.
Indeed, this game will be a test for both batting lineups who have been under-par in recent games. The Netherlands have struggled with the bat right throughout the tournament, even crawling to small targets in the first round. Zimbabwe too have had their issues, with questions around their top order that their bowling attack is doing enough to cover for.
The first game of the 2022 T20 World Cup at Adelaide has the potential to be a nail-biter. Can the Dutch cope without the injured Bas de Leede? Who can step up in his absence? Can the Zimbabwe attack continue on their merry path, or will Paul van Meekeren be the star of the day?
ZIM vs NED Possible Playing XI
Zimbabwe may be tempted to bring in Wellington Masakadza as another spin option in Adelaide. However, Zimbabwe do have a number of spin options already.
Zimbabwe: 1. Craig Ervine (c), 2. Wessly Madhevere, 3. Milton Shumba, 4. Sean Williams, 5. Sikandar Raza, 6. Regis Chakabva (wk), 7. Ryan Burl, 8. Brad Evans, 9. Luke Jongwe/Tendai Chatara, 10. Richard Ngarava, 11. Blessing Muzarabani
Bas de Leede will very likely miss this game after suffering a nasty blow to the face from a Haris Rauf bouncer. Netherlands may bring Vikramjit Singh back into the XI or play a middle order player like Tim van der Gugten or Teja Nidamanuru.
Netherlands: 1. Max O’Dowd, 2. Vikramjit Singh, 3. Stephan Myburgh, 4. Colin Ackermann, 5. Tom Cooper, 6. Scott Edwards (c & wk), 7. Roelof van der Merwe, 8. Tim Pringle, 9. Brandon Glover/Logan van Beek, 10. Paul van Meekeren, 11. Brandon Glover
Key Players to Watch/Key Stats
Zimbabwe:
- Sikandar Raza blew the Dutch batting lineup away in the Final of the T20 World Cup Qualifier tournament earlier this year. The spinner took 4/8, but the Bulawayo surface was a slower track than what is expected in Adelaide.
- Raza has had a brilliant tournament to date. He has smashed 145 runs at a strike rate of 145.00. He also has nine wickets to his name, and will be sure to test a Netherlands side that has had its issues against spin.
- Sean Williams played beautifully against Bangladesh (64 off 42 balls). He will be seeking to improve his record against Netherlands: 4 inns, 65 runs, avg. 16.25.
- Craig Ervine vs Netherlands: 3 inns, 98 runs, avg. 32.67, SR 136.11.
- Blessing Muzarabani has taken nine wickets in five innings in this T20 World Cup (avg. 14.00, SR 12). He is yet to play a T20I against Netherlands.
- Richard Ngarava is conceding just 6.75 runs per over in this tournament. With the Dutch having lost their last 18 wickets for just 214 runs, Ngarava will be key in opening up the Netherlands’ batting lineup early.
Netherlands:
- Max O’Dowd is Netherlands’ top run-scorer in this World Cup (161). Also, he has scored 98 runs in three matches against Zimbabwe at an average of 32.67 and strike rate of 136.11.
- Colin Ackermann has provided solid resistance in recent games. He has struck scores of 62, 17 and 27 in the past three matches.
- Skipper Scott Edwards has made three double-figure scores in his past four games, but has not gone past 21. Could this be the game where he sends himself to bat higher up the order?
- Paul van Meekeren has been one of the stories of this World Cup. The seamer has taken seven wickets at an economy of just 5.66. Zimbabwe lost four wickets in the powerplay last game, and van Meekeren has conceded just 4.60 an over at this stage, along with three wickets.
- Roelof van der Merwe for Netherlands against Zimbabwe: 2 matches, 87 runs, avg. 87.00, SR 177.55 & 5 wickets, avg. 11.20, econ. 7.00.
- Brandon Glover has taken four wickets in two games against Zimbabwe at an average of 10.75 and economy of 5.38.
Other Stats and Facts
- Head-to-head: Matches 4, Zimbabwe 3, Netherlands 1.
- Earlier this year, Zimbabwe (132) beat Netherlands (95) in the Final of the T20 World Cup Qualifier tournament. Sean Williams top-scored with 28.
- Tom Cooper has been in awful form, and his numbers at Adelaide are poor: 15 inns, 222 runs, avg. 17.08, SR 116.84.
