There must be something that strikes New Zealand at customs when they arrive in Australia.
The Kiwis will be up against it when they face Australia in the second ODI of the Chappel-Hadlee series at the SCG on Sunday after the hosts hammered them by 71 runs in the first game on Friday.
The first game was a day/night affair played in front of empty stands due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The hosts dominated most of the game with openers David Warner and Aaron Finch putting up a stand of 124 runs, followed up with a well-accomplished half century by Marnus Labuschagne.
Australia managed to score 258 runs on a slow SCG wicket; a total that appeared to be a modest one at the halfway mark. But, as things unfolded, it proved to be too big a mountain to climb for the Kiwis who were bundled out for a mere 187 runs in 41 overs.
Martin Guptill top scored with a sluggish 40 with Tom Latham scoring 38 runs. Pat Cummins, Mitch Marsh and Adam Zampa were the stars with the ball for Australia picking up three, three and two wickets respectively.
New Zealand have a lot of work to do in the second ODI on Sunday which will be a day game. They have come off a series win against India and will be hoping to produce a much better performance on Sunday as compared to the one on Friday.
Key Players to Watch/Key Stats
- Steve Smith managed to score only 14 in the first game. He doesn’t fail in consecutive innings too often so he will be a threat.
- David Warner’s love affair with the SCG continued. The swashbuckling left-hander now has 801 runs @ 57.21 at the SCG.
- Marnus Labuschagne loves facing the Kiwi bowlers. He has scored 605 runs @ 86.5 in seven innings in international cricket against them.
- Ross Taylor had an outstanding ODI series against India at home. He is averaging in excess of 60 in ODI cricket since the 2015 World Cup, so he will be looking to follow his low score on Friday with a big one on Sunday.
- Mitch Santner had an impressive first game picking up 2/34 in his 10 overs and will have a key role to play for the Kiwis again on a spin friendly SCG surface. He now has 15 wickets in 10 ODIs vs Australia.
- Adam Zampa also had a fantastic match, picking up two wickets including Kane Williamson with a beautiful googly. Zampa, crucial for Australia, has taken 17 wickets in his last 10 white-ball games.
- Mitchell Marsh was Player of the Match in the first ODI with 3/29. He will be key with the ball again, as will Pat Cummins, who also took three wickets.
- Kane Williamson has been short on runs recently by his standards and will be expected to stand up for his side in a do-or-die affair on Sunday.
- Josh Hazlewood now has the second-most wickets in AUS-NZ ODIs among active players (24, avg. 20.75). Trent Boult, who went wicketless in the first game, has the most (29, avg. 19.24).
- Ish Sodhi (3/51) will be out for wickets again in the middle overs.
Stats and Facts
- The last six one day internationals between these two sides have been evenly contested with both sides winning two games each. One game was a no result and another was abandoned.
- New Zealand, with the defeat on Friday, have now lost seven straight One Day Internationals at the SCG dating back to 2002.
- The team batting first has won the last five ODIs at the SCG.

Possible Playing 11
It is a big match for D’Arcy Short, who has a crucial role to play for Australia in the middle order.
Australia: 1. David Warner, 2. Aaron Finch (c), 3. Steve Smith, 4. Marnus Labuschagne, 5. D’Arcy Short, 6. Alex Carey (wk), 7. Mitchell Marsh, 8. Pat Cummins, 9. Mitchell Starc, 10. Adam Zampa, 11. Josh Hazlewood
Lockie Ferguson had a sore throat following the first ODI, so he has been placed in isolation and has been tested for Coronavirus. If he is out, Kyle Jamieson or Tim Southee should come in.
New Zealand will likely stick with two spinners on a turning surface. Also, Tom Latham becomes a crucial cog in the middle order given his ability to play spin well.
New Zealand: 1. Martin Guptill, 2. Henry Nicholls, 3. Kane Williamson (c), 4. Ross Taylor, 5. Tom Latham (wk), 6. Jimmy Neesham, 7. Colin de Grandhomme, 8. Mitchell Santner, 9. Tim Southee/Lockie Ferguson, 10. Ish Sodhi, 11. Trent Boult
SCG Pitch Report and Conditions
The SCG track was on the slower side on Friday, so it was a good effort by the Australian pacers to bowl as well as they did. With a lot of cricket played on the square this season, the last game of the season is likely to be another slow track.
5-10mm of rain is forecast for Sydney throughout the day, so there could be some stoppages.

Match Prediction
New Zealand seemed a good pick in the first ODI, given that Australia’s schedule in recent times has been quite unforgiving.
The Black Caps have what it takes to bounce back, but their poor record at the SCG and struggles in Australia gives the Australians the advantage in this one.
