The second ODI took a similar route to the first, didn’t it?

Ireland suffered another poor start. By the time their fifth wicket fell, they hadn’t even reached 100 runs, and were facing another significant challenge to get to a competitive score. It was Curtis Campher who stepped up again, with the young all-rounder leading the way as Ireland fought hard for the rest of the game.

They had England sweating in the run chase, after Jonny Bairstow once again highlighted his white-ball prowess. Despite the win, England will be after a smoother batting display this time around, as they have been reduced to 78/4 and 137/6 in this series so far. In the end, their long batting lineup, even with the absence of stars, came to the fore.

How will the third game transpire?

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

  • Curtis Campher is enjoying some start to his international career. He has scored 127 runs (59* & 68) and taken three wickets (1/26 & 2/50) this series. It is crucial Ireland bat him higher up the order.
  • Jonny Bairstow’s 82 off 41 balls was some knock. He loves batting at the Ageas Bowl, with his stats at the ground now reading: 5 ODIs, 321 runs, avg. 80.25, SR 126.87.
  • Sam Billings: The man for a sticky situation? Billings has now played two superb knocks this series under pressure: 67* (54) & 46* (61).
  • Is this the game that Jason Roy fires? He has had two low scores this series, but given his white-ball prowess, he has the ability to go big. Ageas Bowl stats: 9 ODIs, 356 runs, avg. 44.50, SR 102.89.
  • Eoin Morgan’s duck in the second ODI had Ireland believing they could pull off an upset. Why? Morgan’s record vs Ireland is superb: 7 ODIs, 305 runs, avg. 61.00, SR: 99.35.
  • Paul Stirling (Ireland’s highest ODI run-scorer) and Andy Balbirnie (1,171 runs, avg. 39.09 since 2018) have not had a happy series so far. They need to provide a solid platform for Ireland.
  • Watch out for Harry Tector? The promising 20-year old came into the series on the back of three straight List A fifties. So, can he build on his start of 28 last game?
  • Adil Rashid set the second ODI up for England with an excellent spell of 3/34. His series figures now read: 20-3-60-4. Also, Rashid has the most wickets in Ireland-England ODIs (12, avg. 16.50).
  • David Willey caused further damage in the powerplay last game, taking two wickets. He has seven wickets for the series, and also showed his capability with the bat in the second ODI (47* off 46 balls).
  • Josh Little has seven wickets in two ODIs vs England (4/45 & 3/60).

Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-Head: 12 Matches, England 10, Ireland 1, NR 1.
  • Ireland’s only win vs England was the all-time classic in the 2011 World Cup. Kevin O’Brien hit a memorable century. However, can he improve on his average of 24.00 vs England?
  • Since the beginning of 2019, the average first innings at Southampton score is 240.29. The team batting second has won four of the past seven completed ODIs at the ground.
  • Ireland have done well to score 172 and 212/9 this series when you consider the positions they were in. They were 79/7 in the first ODI and 91/6 in the second.

ENG vs IRE 3rd ODI: Willey to do well again?

Possible Playing 11

Will England experiment a little more this match? The likes of Liam Dawson and Liam Livingstone were selected in the setup, and could get a look in. Reece Topley has been ruled out with injury.

England: 1. Jason Roy, 2. Jonny Bairstow (wk), 3. James Vince, 4. Tom Banton/Liam Livingstone, 5. Eoin Morgan (c), 6. Sam Billings, 7. Moeen Ali, 8. David Willey, 9. Tom Curran, 10. Adil Rashid/Liam Dawson, 11. Saqib Mahmood

Ireland must look to promote Curtis Campher up the order, as he can help set a good platform.

Ireland: 1. Paul Stirling, 2. Gareth Delaney, 3. Andy Balbirnie (c), 4. Curtis Campher, 5. Kevin O’Brien, 6. Harry Tector, 7. Lorcan Tucker (wk), 8. Simi Singh, 9. Andy McBrine, 10. Josh Little, 11. Craig Young/Boyd Rankin

Ageas Bowl Pitch Report and Conditions

The pitch for the third ODI will be a different strip to the one used in the first two matches. However, one can expect the track to have something in it for everyone, as has been the case in the two ODIs and the Test so far this summer.

In terms of the forecast, a mostly sunny day, with some cloud cover, is expected. The chances of rain is very low.
