England ODI and T20I captain Harry Brook has revealed why he chooses to skip the Indian Premier League (IPL), citing a significant workload across all three formats.
Brook’s outstanding 79* off 35 balls in the fourth T20I against India led to calls on social media for his return to the IPL. However, Brook, who is also a crucial member of England’s Test side, says he doesn’t see a world where he can play in the world’s biggest T20 league at this stage.
Enjoyed my time in the IPL, but I don’t see myself playing in it at the minute – Harry Brook
Speaking to the media ahead of the fifth T20I in Southampton, Brook says playing all three formats – and captaining two – requires focus. Also, he sees the March-May window as the perfect opportunity to work on his game and fitness away from the hustle and bustle of international cricket.
“I think going to the IPL is a great experience. I really enjoyed my time when I went to the IPL, but unfortunately I don’t see a world in how I can play at the minute from my personal point of view,” Brook said.
“Playing all three formats and captaining two of the sides. I’ve got a lot on my plate with that.
“And that 3 months is a perfect time for me to have a break and work hard on my fitness and my game and try and be as best as I can for English cricket in the summer and whatever we have in the winters as well.”
Brook in such form makes him one of the most dangerous batters in the world. He has the ability to access all parts of the ground no matter the length of the delivery.
If he continues on his trajectory in white-ball cricket, England could have a strong say in the 2027 ODI and 2028 T20 World Cups.
