Australia needed a spark with Pakistan sitting pretty at 124/1 in pursuit of 318 in the first innings. Pat Cummins, as he has done so often in recent months, delivered the goods, producing one of his classic spells to finish day two of the Boxing Day Test at the MCG with figures of 3/37.
After a wayward start to his spell, the Australian captain found his groove. First, he dismissed Abdullah Shafique, who played nicely for his 62, thanks to an excellent caught and bowled. But, he saved his best for Babar Azam once again, producing a gem of a delivery to castle Pakistan’s premier batsman through the gate.
Cummins got the ball to nip back beautifully to hit the top of offstump. What is special about Cummins is not only this one delivery, but also how he’s been able to set Babar up throughout this series so far. In the first Test at Perth, Cummins did not leave the good length in the channel, where Babar eventually nicked behind to Alex Carey. In Melbourne, Babar was beaten on the inside edge and heard timber.
The spell turned the match on its head. After Pakistan had visions of challenging the Australians in this Test, Cummins almost slammed the door shut, with the visitors to begin day three on 194/6, still 124 runs behind. With the surface offering movement and some turn, Pakistan face an uphill task to keep the series alive.

Wanindu Hasaranga to SRH for 1.5 crore
He may have struggled with injuries in recent times, but Wanindu Hasaranga to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at his base price of 1.5 crore (approx. US$180,000) is an excellent pick. Hasaranga provides SRH with an attacking option in the middle overs. In fact, out of his 35 IPL wickets so far, 23 have come between overs 7-16 where he strikes every 19.3 deliveries on average.

South African Gerald Coetzee was also tipped to go for higher than his eventual 5 crore (approx. US$885,000). Coetzee has made a huge impression in 2023, where he finished level with Mumbai Indians (MI) teammate Jasprit Bumrah with 20 wickets in the Cricket World Cup. More impressive was the fact he struck every 19.05 deliveries and looked to lift his team’s spirits, especially in the semi-final against Australia.

It’s that time of year again. The MCG Boxing Day Test is back. Australia, both World Test and World Cup champions, are aiming to beat Pakistan again after a convincing victory in Perth headlined by David Warner’s whirlwind century, Mitchell Marsh’s excellent all-round display, and Nathan Lyon’s 500th Test wicket.
Unfortunately for the tourists, rain looks to be their best chance of getting a result in this series. Unfortunately for fans, rain is expected to play a factor on the first day at least. Here is a look at the weather forecast for the showpiece Test match.
MCG weather forecast for Boxing Day Test between Australia and Pakistan
According to the Bureau of Meteorology (bom.gov.au), there is a 60% chance of showers in Melbourne on Boxing Day. Anywhere between 0-10mm is expected to fall. This follows on from Christmas Day where more rainfall (up to 25mm) is forecast. Such conditions may result in more moisture on the pitch due to it being placed under covers for an extended period.
The forecast looks much more promising from Wednesday onwards according to bom.gov.au. Just 0-1mm is expected on day two (27th December), followed by partly cloudy conditions and just a 20% chance of rain on day three.
However, AccuWeather, which is typically considered the most accurate platform, predicts 3.7mm of rain on day two after 5.8mm on day one. Day three is expected to be dry, but day four (29 December) is forecast to have up to 7.6mm of rainfall.
Given the Test is still a few days away, one can hope the forecast will change. Also, the Melbourne weather is notoriously unpredictable. Rainfall was forecast for a recent Big Bash League match between Melbourne Stars and Perth Scorchers on December 12, but the match was completed without interruption.
Pakistan will be aiming to end their run of 15 straight Test defeats in Australia. Their last win was way back in 1995, and three of the five Tests have finished in an innings victory for Australia. Add to that the 360-run demolition in Perth last week, and Shan Masood’s team have their work cut out to turn things around on this tour.

Cricket News: Footage emerges of why Tom Curran was banned for four matches | Footage of Tom Curran intimidating umpire
Seemingly out of nowhere, Sydney Sixers and England all-rounder Tom Curran was suspended for four Big Bash League (BBL) matches for intimidating an official in the leadup to the Sixers’ clash against Hobart Hurricanes back on December 11.
Sixers have confirmed they will appeal the decision after Curran was charged with a Level 3 offence under Cricket Australia’s Code of Conduct. However, footage has since emerged of the incident, and the all-rounder has copped widespread criticism for how he conducted himself.

Curran was working on his bowling run up ahead of the clash, but was running on the playing surface. The umpire attempted to put a stop to it, but Curran continued, and attempted to shoulder charge the umpire on the way through. He only just missed.

Nikhil Chaudhary is a former U19 National representative for India who now lives in Queensland. After a couple of fantastic seasons in the local T20 competition, he was signed by Hobart Hurricanes for BBL 13.
The Hurricanes picked up all-rounder Chaudhary as a local player given his Australian residence. More importantly, his numbers in recent years got him the nod. In the aforementioned T20 competition, he scored his runs at an average of 44.8 and strike rate of 164.3.
Chaudhary is not only a hard-hitting batsman, but also a handy legspinner. He made a very promising debut in BBL cricket, hitting an impressive 31-ball 40 against champions Perth Scorchers when the Hobart Hurricanes were in all sorts of trouble at 4/28 and 5/47. His cut shot was particularly eyecatching, as was his magnificent lofted drive against fast bowler Lance Morris.
Then, he started well with the ball, firing in fast and accurate legspinners during the second innings at Perth Stadium on December 20.
“Goal was to play Big Bash” – Nikhil Chaudhary
Before the season, Chaudhary revealed that his goal was to play BBL cricket when he moved to Australia. He also spoke of how teams can make full use of his talent.
“My first goal when I moved to Australia was to be playing in the Big Bash,” he said.
“I would describe myself as a finisher. I’ll be there at the end in the last couple of overs scoring a couple of big ones and finishing the game for the team that will be my goal for this year.”
Salliann Beams, Cricket Tasmania High Performance General Manager, said that it was Hurricanes Assistant Coach James Hopes who put Chaudhary’s name forward.
“Hopesy put Nikhil’s name forward earlier in the year, and ever since then he hasn’t stopped scoring runs, Nikhil has always batted 5, 6, 7 and he knows it so well… hopefully he’ll get his chance.”
Previously, Chaudhary made the decision to leave India with the aim of playing cricket at a higher level in Australia. He moved to Brisbane in 2020 and made an impression right away which has now landed him that coveted BBL contract.
