A competitive showing for Nepal will add to what has been a strong year. They rallied late to qualify for the 2023 ODI World Cup Qualifier tournament, where they showed good signs, scoring 290/8 against Zimbabwe and hitting 238 against West Indies. Multan is set to be sold out, so this represents a great opportunity for the Nepalese to showcase their talent in front of a big audience both in the ground and on television.

For Pakistan, they come into this tournament on the back of a hard-fought 3-0 win over Afghanistan. The bowling attack was strong for the most part, while there was enough from their middle-lower order to suggest the top order can get enough support. New fantasy gaming platform Super11 has been unveiled as the title sponsor of the 2023 Asia Cup. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) announced the partnership on their social media accounts ahead of the start of the tournament.

“The battle for Asian Supremacy is upon us! Presenting our official title sponsor for the Men’s ODI Asia Cup 2023, @Super11games!,” the tweet read.

Super11

Super11 is a new fantasy platform that will be launched with the start of the Asia Cup. Omar Khan, Super11 CEO, said “It is with great pride that Super 11 has signed on to be the Title sponsor of the Asia Cup.”

“With the growing popularity of cricket tournaments like the Asia Cup it will allow fans to see the best teams battle it out in the longer format of the game.”

“Already the buzz around the Asia Cup and the India vs Pakistan games is at an all-time high and we are confident that this association will help in bringing fans closer to the game that we all love.”

Also at the presentation ceremony was Pakistan legend Wasim Akram, who is a brand ambassador.

2023 Asia Cup Details

The 2023 Asia Cup will be played in the ODI format ahead of the World Cup. Sri Lanka are the defending champions, beating Pakistan in last year’s final, which was played ahead of the T20 World Cup.

This tournament is co-hosted by Sri Lanka and Pakistan. Sri Lanka will host nine matches, while Pakistan will host four.

The competition will begin with two groups of three teams. India, Pakistan and Nepal make up Group A. Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan make up the group of death that is Group B.

The top two teams in either group will qualify for the Super Four stage. There, each team will play each other once, with the top two then qualifying for the final.

  • Tournament start date: August 31, Pakistan vs Nepal, Multan.
  • Super Four start date: September 6, Lahore.
  • Final: September 17, Colombo.

ODI cricket, now often lingering in the shadows of the T20 juggernaut, can enjoy the spotlight over the next three months. The World Cup is fast approaching, with the preceding 2023 Asia Cup serving as important preparation.

However, with the Asia Cup comes more than just preparation. Great pride is at stake between rival nations, with India-Pakistan and the ever-eventful Sri Lanka-Bangladesh contests sure to create plenty of talking points in the early stages of the tournament. And, there is possibly Pakistan vs. Afghanistan to look forward to once again.

2023 Asia Cup format details

Before we delve into some big predictions, here are some details on the tournament.

  • Teams: India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan.
  • The 2023 Asia Cup will comprise of 13 matches, with nine taking place in Sri Lanka and the other four in Pakistan.
  • The first stage will be two groups of three, with the top two qualifying for the Super Four stage.
  • In the Super Four stage, each team will play the other once. The top two sides will qualify to the Final.

Such a tournament, which is filled with stardom, is always challenging to predict. With a combination of cricketing logic (somewhat) and a gut feel, here are four predictions for the tournament.

2023 Asia Cup predictions

Leading run-scorer: Virat Kohli

There are a number of contenders for leading run-scorer. Shubman Gill and Babar Azam are two names that spring to mind.

However, there seems to be a swagger about Virat Kohli this year. More often than not, he has looked in strong touch across formats, with centuries flowing after a long drought.

Also, Kohli loves the ODI Asia Cup. In eight matches, Kohli has struck three centuries with a total of 525 runs at an average of 65.6 and strike rate of 99.4. On pitches expected to aid turn throughout the tournament, expect Kohli’s strike rotation and incredible fitness to come up trumps.

Leading wicket-taker: Shaheen Shah Afridi

Speaking of turning pitches, the likes of Kuldeep Yadav, Rashid Khan and Maheesh Theekshana are contenders for leading wicket-taker.

However, Shaheen Shah Afridi swinging the ball up-front is a sight to behold. Also, the left-armer will be key for Pakistan at the death, which brings about wicket-taking opportunities.

Add to that Shaheen’s motivation to perform against India in particular, and he has what it takes to finish atop the list.

Super Four teams: India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh

India and Pakistan will have no issues reaching the Super Four stage. Nepal have enjoyed a very promising year to date, but the step up to the two cricketing powerhouses means competitiveness – rather than victory – is a far more realistic goal.

Group B is mighty difficult to predict. Sri Lanka are the current Asia Cup champions, winning the T20 edition last year. Bangladesh are a solid ODI unit, while Afghanistan have plenty going for them.

After much deliberation, Afghanistan and Bangladesh will qualify to the Super Four stage. Sri Lanka are ravaged by injuries to key bowlers including Wanindu Hasaranga (likely to miss at least group stage) and Dushmantha Chameera (out of entire tournament).

Bangladesh have had their issues in the past against high-quality leg and mystery spin. The Tigers will have plenty of quality spin to deal with, facing up to Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, and Maheesh Theekshana, among others. However, Sri Lanka’s injuries are a huge blow for the co-hosts.

Sri Lanka play a crucial game at home against Bangladesh on Thursday (31 August). This game could decide who goes through. Of course, Afghanistan are no certainties, but their progress in recent years, bowling attack, and promising performances recently against Pakistan holds them in good stead.

Winner: Pakistan

India deservedly start the tournament as favourites. But, this will be the time Pakistan break their Asia Cup drought dating back to 2012.

Pakistan, the number one-ranked side in ODIs, look settled. Their middle order is one area of possible concern, but the length of their batting order is a big advantage. Also, their pace battery offers different points of attack, while their spinners are wily customers. Add to that the consistent Babar Azam and Imam-ul-Haq, and Pakistan should have decent starts more often than not.

India, in comparison, have a few more teething issues. Shreyas Iyer, who is likely to occupy the number four spot, is just coming off a serious back injury. KL Rahul, the number five, will miss the first match and has been out of action for an extended period. Jasprit Bumrah has had just the three T20s worth of international action since September last year, while Prasidh Krishna has only just returned from injury as well. Also, the make up of India’s XI, with the specialist bowlers likely to bat from number eight onwards, is a point of discussion.

Indeed, India are capable of bringing it altogether. But, this Asia Cup might serve as important match time for a number of players to adequately prepare for the World Cup.

While Bangladesh, Afghanistan and co. are capable of going far, Pakistan have what it takes to lift the trophy this time.

Naseem hit two boundaries to seal a memorable and thrilling win, wetting the appetite further for the approaching Asia and World Cups.

So, this third ODI could be anything. The second match was a stark contrast to the first, with Afghanistan’s openers piling on 200+ less than 48 hours after the team was rolled for 59. Rahmanullah Gurbaz may have went to sleep wondering how a score of 151 doesn’t win you the player of the match award, but ultimately Afghanistan as a side fell just short in the crucial moments.

Ahead of the Asia Cup, the Afghans will be seeking a confidence-boosting win. For Pakistan, the middle order is in the spotlight.

  • Zadran has not been dismissed by Haris Rauf (23 balls, 17 runs) or Naseem Shah (20 balls, 10 runs) in ODI cricket.
  • Imam-ul-Haq has been dismissed by off-spin three times against Afghanistan. Mohammad Nabi (six wickets in six ODIs vs Pakistan) has dismissed him twice, while Mujeeb Ur Rahman (eight wickets in four matches vs Pakistan) dismissed him in the last match.
  • Rashid Khan went wicketless in the second ODI (0/53). He has the class to bounce back. The legspinner has dismissed Babar Azam seven times in 119 balls in white-ball cricket.

Pakistan:

  • Imam-ul-Haq has struck three half-centuries in four ODIs against Afghanistan. Imam has been prolific in ODIs since the beginning of 2022: 15 inns, 844 runs, avg. 60.3, SR 88.4.

The Matildas’ terrific 2023 World Cup campaign has ignited the debate in Australia: what is the country’s national sport?

Over 11 million Australians tuned into the Matildas’ World Cup semi-final against England, setting a record for the most viewed television program in Australia since records began in 2001. The fanfare around the nation, following on from similar scenes for the Socceroos during the 2022 men’s World Cup, has seen calls grow louder that football/soccer is Australia’s national sport.

Football’s participation numbers at junior levels is the best of any sport. However, Australia has been mighty successful in cricket, with the sport played far and wide. The Australian Football League (AFL) creates buzz in a number of states, especially Victoria, with strong crowds, the biggest TV deal, club memberships and more.

But, what do the fans believe? Betting agency TAB launched a fan poll named The Great Sport Debate, inviting Australians to have their say.

Fans vote on Australia’s National Sport

The poll finished with 16,334 votes. AFL came out on top with 33.7% of the votes (5,509), followed by cricket with 21.4% (3,493). Soccer (i.e. football) came in at third at 18.3% (2,994), followed by rugby league at 16.9% (2,765) rounding out the top four.

TAB also had a question on who Australia’s best national team is. The Australian men’s and women’s cricket teams, with multiple World Cups between them, finished top with 31% of the votes (5,056). Matildas came in second at 22.1% (3,612), followed by the Kangaroos rugby league team.

Former Australia fast bowler and current commentator Brendan Julian went in to bat for cricket. During The Great Sports Debate TV program, Julian said, “We’ve got the Melbourne Cricket Ground, we have the Sydney Cricket Ground, we have the Gabba, we’ve got the WACA. Every major sporting ground is named after cricket.”

“Cricket is played nationally around the country,” he continued. Then speaking to AFL legend Barry Johnson, Julian asked “do you know why AFL was invented? It was to keep the cricketers fit in winter!”

“Football is all about World Cups. We can’t bag netball because I have two daughters. Rugby league, they don’t even play it in Perth and Adelaide,” he said.

Talking about Australia’s women’s team, Julian said, “The women’s team would probably be the best sporting team in the country in the past 20 years. They’ve won seven World Cups, six T20 world titles. The 2020 final at the MCG? 92,000 people.”

Ahead of big tournaments, the batting remains the key concern for the Afghans. Whether they have enough runs to counter quality attacks is the question, so today is a big test of their mettle less than 48 hours after a heavy defeat. Indeed, eyes will be on their experienced players to lead the way and set a platform against Pakistan’s attack.

For Pakistan, their batting left plenty to be desired. Although it was a slow pitch, their inability to rotate strike at times is cause for improvement. They will want Babar Azam to arrest his recent slide in form, while attention will also be on the middle order in the quest to either rebuild or finish the innings.

Cricket fans continue to be divided on English Test skipper Ben Stokes’ return from ODI retirement ahead of the World Cup scheduled to be held in India later this year. The star all-rounder had hung his boots from the 50-overs format after receiving the Test captaincy in 2022. As he sought to manage his workload, Stokes decided to devote attention to red-ball cricket and T20Is, which resulted in England winning the World Cup in the shortest format later in the year in Australia.

However, England’s white-ball coach Matthew Mott had always remained insistent that Stokes could come back to represent the national team in the ODI World Cup. The Three Lions are looking to defend their crown – the one that they had lifted courtesy of Stokes’ heroics at Lord’s in June 2019. Accordingly, the player will be preparing for the tournament starting with the New Zealand series that will be held in England in September. Several supporters and critics have divisive views on the player’s decision.

“Ben Stokes coming out of one day retirement, I found that interesting. It was a bit of, ‘Me, me, me’, there isn’t it? It was, ‘I’ll pick and I’ll choose where I want to play and when I want to play’, and, ‘I’ll play in the big tournaments’,” former Australian Test skipper Tim Paine remarked on the situation.

He added, “The guys who played for 12 months, ‘Sorry, thanks. But can you go and sit on the bench because I want to play now?’ I don’t know, he’s not bowling. Harry Brook or Ben Stokes? As a bat. It would be very close, very, very close.”

England batter Harry Brook had to sacrifice his place in the squad to make way for Stokes. Brook has been one of the most pivotal players for England coming up the ranks across formats in the last couple of years.

The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)p layer has played three ODIs so far. He has 86 runs to his name and already has a half-century to his name. He has played 20 T20Is and has 372 runs in the shortest international cricket format. Brook, however, has no qualms on missing out from the World Cup squad to a player of Stokes’ pedigree.

“He (Stokes) is one of the best players to ever play cricket, so I can’t really complain, can I? Obviously it’s disappointing (to be omitted), but I can’t do anything about it now, you’ve just got to move on. I’m trying not to think about it any more. I’ve not had much conversation with (coach) Matthew (Mott) or (captain) Jos (Buttler). They said with Stokesy coming back, I was probably going to miss out this time,” Brook said.

However, former England international Kevin Pietersen is not a big fan of the Brook’s ouster from the roster. Pietersen hailed Brook as a tremendous talent, who is tailor-made to star in the modern-day cricket. He was astonished at the call, though it came at the expense of Stokes finding a way back in the team.

“I’m absolutely flabbergasted that (Brook) cannot make England’s World Cup squad because he is pure quality. I just cannot believe it. I saw this guy at Headingley two years ago when The Hundred took off and I immediately saw a superstar. I saw someone playing 360, who could hit the same balls over extra-cover or midwicket,” Pietersen commented a couple of days back.

Regardless of the comments, Stokes’ leadership, all-round skillsets, and match-winning abilities are second to none. He has time and again inspired England to win big matches in major tournaments from precarious situations. His retirement, from day one, was an exercise to protect his body amidst the turmoils of red-ball cricket and the T20 World Cup last year. Mott had always maintained that a call on this decision would be taken closer to the World Cup and hence the U-turn was arguably always on the cards.

Australia will tour South Africa in August and September 2023 for eight white-ball matches comprising of three T20Is and five ODIs.

The visit is Australia’s first since February and March 2020. They won the T20I series 2-1 but lost the ODI leg 3-0.

Mitchell Marsh, who was named Australia’s T20I captain, will also lead in the ODIs after Pat Cummins was ruled out with a small fracture in his wrist. The Australians will also be without Mitchell Starc and Steve Smith, who are also managing injuries, along with a number of others who resting after a hard-fought Ashes series.

The three-week long tour promises to be a challenging one against talented Proteas’ white-ball teams.

SA vs AUS 2023 schedule – three T20Is and five ODIs

T20I series:

Kingsmead Durban will host all three T20Is. The last men’s T20I on this ground was back in February 2020. The Proteas fell short by two runs against England in a thrilling, high-scoring match.

The three-match series will serve as preparation for both teams with the next T20 World Cup less than a year away in West Indies and USA.
