India and Pakistan will go head-to-head in a highly-anticipated ICC T20 World Cup match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Sunday, 23rd October.
MCG is renowned to produce sporting tracks that provide for a fine battle between bat and ball. The large boundaries on both sides make fours and sixes difficult to come by.
Pakistan is armed with a splendid pace attack that broke the back of the Indian batting lineup in the World Cup last year. However, the efficiency of that bowling lineup will also be determined by the prevalent weather conditions. The variety that Pakistan has in their bowling unit will benefit tremendously from overcast conditions, and hopefully there will be enough play for a result.
The temperature in Melbourne on 23rd October is expected to hover around the 13°C-19°C mark. However, there is the likelihood of rain throughout the day, which increases the possibility of interruptions during the match. According to bom.gov.au, there is an 80 per cent chance of showers on Sunday, with the range expected to be anywhere between 2-5mm.
This is a significant improvement on the 6-20mm that was forecast earlier in the week. However, the showers are most likely to fall in the evening according to the Bureau of Meteorology, which increases the likelihood of a shortened match.

But, according to AccuWeather, most of the rain is scheduled to fall around noon, with 85% chance of precipitation between 11am and 1pm. From 7pm, the chance of precipitation is just 16%, falling to 7% from 7-11pm. If this turns out to be the case, then it is likely we will see a result. However, Melbourne’s weather is almost impossible to predict at times, so it remains to be seen how the weather plays out.
The overcast conditions could hand an early advantage to both the bowling units. Presently, Pakistan arguably has a better attack at their disposal as the Indian team is coming into this tournament in the absence of mainstay Jasprit Bumrah.

Ireland:
Paul Stirling has the most runs in IRE-ZIM T20Is (377) at a superb average of 62.83 and strike rate of 157.08. This includes a 115* last year.
But, Stirling has to overcome some very poor recent form. Before his 37 in the warm up match vs Namibia, Stirling scored just 19 runs in his previous seven T20s.
Harry Tector is a promising player in ODIs, and he has shown some of that form in T20Is this year: 16 inns, 344 runs, avg. 28.66, SR 133.33.
George Dockrell comes into the World Cup off the back of some great form. In Ireland’s recent five-match series against Afghanistan, Dockrell made scores of 10*, 25*, 58*, 41* and 7*.
Overall this year, Dockrell has scored 332 runs at an average of 33.20 and strike rate of 146.25.

It wouldn’t be to anyone’s surprise if West Indies saw Namibia’s superb win over Sri Lanka as a bit of a warning. Like Sri Lanka in Group A, West Indies are favourites to top Group B, but if complacency seeps in, Scotland are capable of causing Nicholas Pooran’s team significant headaches.
A cold Hobart afternoon will greet the players, but the heat is on right away in what is a very competitive group. Victory here is vital for both sides, as playing from in front is far more comfortable than chasing points in a group that also includes the capable Ireland and Zimbabwe.
Scotland have been short of T20I cricket this year, but they will be hoping their recent ODI form can work for them. West Indies had their moments against Australia recently, and are seeking the perfect start to a tournament where they are fielding a team that looks so different to the experienced one last year. How this Windies side will cope in a new era of sorts will be interesting to see, and former coach Ottis Gibson believes a World Cup brings the best out of the men in maroon.

Kyle Mayers could be the X-Factor for West Indies. His memorable shot against Australia recently is something he is capable of producing regularly. His strike rate of 132.41 in 28 T20s this year can be beneficial for the Windies at the top.
Brandon King had a brilliant recent CPL 2022 campaign. He hit 83* off 50 balls in the Final. In 27 T20 innings this year, he has struck 788 runs at an average of 34.26 and strike rate of 125.48.
Can Nicholas Pooran overcome his horror form? Before his 46 in the warm up vs UAE, he scored just 35 runs in his previous seven T20 matches. If Windies are to do well, one feels Pooran needs to make a strong impact.
Jason Holder is West Indies’ leading wicket-taker in T20Is this year (23, avg. 23.08, SR 15.6). The tall seamer could enjoy the cool conditions in Hobart, where there may be some movement upfront.
Odean Smith looked in good touch in the recent Australia series. He took 1/24 and 1/19, and also struck 27 off 17 in the first T20I down the order. As a pinch hitter, Smith can be a dangerous option for opponents.
Scotland may have their work cut out against Alzarri Joseph. He recently took the most wickets in CPL 2022 (18) at an average of 15.00 and economy of 6.75. He was also brilliant against Australia, where he took 2/17 and 3/21.
Scotland:
George Munsey has the highest strike rate of any Scotland player with at least 100 T20I runs (144.72). He is Scotland’s third-highest run-scorer (1,317), and will be tasked with providing a fast start.
Expect skipper Richie Berrington to bat at number four. He has scored 840 runs at an average of 46.67 and strike rate of 137.70 in that position in all T20s. He averages below 30 in all other positions he’s batted at.
Chris Greaves’ all-round ability will be key for Scotland. He recently scored 31 and 37 against New Zealand in July. Michael Leask will also be key, and he comes into this game in good form after scores of 85, 39, 19*, 5 and 41 in his last five ODIs.
Josh Davey took nine wickets in five matches at last year’s World Cup. The seamer could enjoy the extra bounce on Australian pitches.
Pacer Safyaan Sharif will be key at the death. He is Scotland’s leading wicket-taker in T20Is, with 61 in 53 innings at an average of 24.88 and strike rate of 18.2. Spinner Mark Watt is next with 57, but how much purchase he can find on a fresh Hobart surface remains to be seen.
This will be the first T20I between Scotland and West Indies.

Since its inception in 2007, T20 World Cups have had their fair share of upsets over the years, producing some incredible memories and talking points for years to come. After all, who doesn’t love a great underdog story?
Namibia’s wonderful victory over 2022 Asia Cup champions Sri Lanka sent a reminder of how international cricket can create some of the great moments. It was a superb win, and provides us with an excuse – or opportunity for use of a better word – to look back at the biggest upsets in T20 World Cups.
Boasting a top five of Adam Gilchrist, Matthew Hayden, Ricky Ponting, Andrew Symonds, and Michael Hussey, Australia were expected to make light work of an inexperienced Zimbabwe side. Remember, at that point, the African nation were stripped of their Test status, and were trying to make their way back as a competitive force in international cricket.
The Zimbabweans reduced Australia to 19/3, and the pre-tournament favourites were only able to crawl to 138/9. In the chase, Zimbabwe fell to 70/4 in the 11th over, but Brendan Taylor, just 21 years of age at the time, batted right through to finish with 60* off 45 balls. With four needed off two balls, the ball trickled to the fine leg boundary off Taylor’s boot to seal a famous win and spark wild celebrations.

Bangladesh vs West Indies, Johannesburg, 2007
In the very next match of the 2007 World Cup, Bangladesh pulled off a brilliant win against a Windies side comprising of the likes of Chris Gayle, Marlon Samuels, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Dwayne Bravo. Gayle was out third ball, but the Windies were able to muster 164/8; a total most believed would be enough.
But, Mohammad Ashraful (61 off 27 balls) and Aftab Ahmed (62* off 49 balls) had other ideas. Ashraful, who is arguably the most unfulfilled talent in Bangladesh history, had one of his best days, slamming the Windies attack to all parts of Johannesburg. In the end, the Tigers made light work of the target, reaching the mark with two overs and six wickets to spare.
Incredibly, as of October 2022, this remains Bangladesh’s only win against a Test playing nation in T20 World Cups.
Netherlands vs England, Lord’s, 2009
The 2009 World Cup began in the most memorable fashion possible. England, at Lord’s, lost the tournament opener to Netherlands in a game that Dirk Nannes on commentary described as the “best cricket match I’ve ever been involved in.”
It is even more incredible to think that England raced to 102/0 after 11.1 overs in that game. Can you imagine what odds Netherlands would have been at that stage? But, the Dutch fought back to restrict the hosts to just 162/5, a total they chased down courtesy of Tom de Grooth’s 30-ball 49 and a missed run out by Stuart Broad off the very last ball that resulted in overthrows and Dutch euphoria.

“England have been double-dutched!”, yelled Nasser Hussain on commentary. Five years after the amazing win in 2009, Netherlands did a job on England once again. However, it was much more one-sided in Chattogram, as the Dutch rolled Stuart Broad’s team for just 88 after posting 133/5 on a slow pitch.
Mudassir Bukhari ripped through the England batting lineup with 3/12. Logan van Beek, who is playing in the 2022 World Cup, took 3/9 in his two overs.

Afghanistan vs West Indies, Nagpur, 2016
We all remember Carlos Brathwaite’s name from the famous 2016 World Cup. However, another match worth remembering was Afghanistan’s stunning win over eventual champions West Indies.
After being sent in to bat, Afghanistan crawled to 123/7 courtesy of Najibullah Zadran (48* off 40 balls), who scored more than a third of his team’s runs. The Windies struggled badly against Afghanistan’s mix of clever seam and spin bowling, falling short by six runs despite batting their full 20 overs.
This win, full of self-belief, helped further drive Afghanistan’s growth.
Namibia vs Sri Lanka, Geelong, 2022
Namibia’s historic win over Sri Lanka was their first over a Test-playing nation. It really was a superb achievement given where they were in their batting innings and how Sri Lanka won the Asia Cup only five weeks earlier. After falling to 93/6 with 34 balls remaining, Jan Frylinck (44 off 28) and JJ Smit (31* off 16) staged a remarkable fightback to post 163/7.
The total was way too many for Sri Lanka, who fell short by 55 runs. Frylinck (2/26) and Smit (1/16) were superb with the ball, as were David Wiese (2/16) and the very impressive Ben Shikongo (2/22), who was on a hat-trick at one stage.

What a start to the 2022 T20 World Cup. The underdogs not only won, but they showed what they were capable of. Also, the team that won the toss lost the match, so that is a welcome relief, if you focus on the influence of tosses.
But forget the toss for a moment. Namibia were outstanding. Under pressure themselves with the bat, they rallied on the back of their excellent all-rounders to catch Sri Lanka off-guard. Indeed, from the moment Jan Frylinck and JJ Smit got into their work with the bat, Sri Lanka, the reigning Asia Cup champions, were never in the contest.
With the ball, the exciting Ben Shikongo put on a clinic in the powerplay to leave the Lions reeling. From there, the Namibians kept picking up regular wickets, as only two Sri Lankan batsmen crossed 20 in a very underwhelming performance.
All of a sudden, Namibia are well on their way to qualify for the Super 12s for a second straight year. They were well backed to reach that stage before the tournament began, but not many would have expected them to even beat Sri Lanka, let alone so convincingly. From a Sri Lankan perspective, they can ill-afford any further slip ups against UAE and Netherlands after this significant wake up call.

“It’s been an incredible journey, last year was exciting for us and we’ve now topped that with a great win. Though there’s still a lot of work to do for the rest of the tournament. But yeah it’s been a historic day for us,” said Namibia captain Gerhard Erasmus in the post-match presentation.
Namibia will be looking to build on their great win when they play Netherlands on Tuesday afternoon. Following that match, Sri Lanka will have to pick themselves up quickly against UAE under lights.

Watch out for Vriitya Aravind. The keeper-batsman’s 407 runs this year come at a strike rate of 140.83.
Skipper Chundangapoyil Rizwan was UAE’s leading run-scorer in their recent two-match series against Bangladesh (56). This included a half century (51*) off just 36 balls.

The wait is over. The highly anticipated 2022 T20 World Cup is upon us, with two promising teams set to kick off the tournament. Sri Lanka, fresh off a magnificent Asia Cup triumph, will be seeking not only qualification to the Super 12s, but making a mark in that stage. Namibia, who qualified for the Super 12s last year, have much of the core that performed so admirably in the UAE. So, both units have positives from recent months to build on.
While the Sri Lankans can have visions of challenging higher ranked sides, they must be wary of looking too far ahead too soon. Namibia enter this tournament as a well-balanced outfit, with a number of bowling options to turn to. Thus, a strong start for Sri Lanka – the kind that held them in good stead in the Asia Cup – will be key as they aim to set a platform for Dasun Shanaka and the dangerous Bhanuka Rajapaksa.
So, how Namibia handle Sri Lanka’s big hitters will be key, especially with small straight boundaries at Geelong. Also, how Namibia’s batting lineup copes with the Lions’ mix of strong pace and spin options will make for interesting viewing. Sri Lanka:
Kusal Mendis when he opens in T20Is: 20 inns, 602 runs, avg. 31.68, SR 142.65. In all other positions, Mendis has scored 234 runs at an average of 11.14 and strike rate of 97.90.
Pathum Nissanka is Sri Lanka’s leading run-scorer in T20Is this year. The opener has struck 499 runs at an average of 31.18 and strike rate of 114.71, with four fifties.
In T20Is in Australia, Nissanka has scored 184 runs in five matches at an average of 36.80 and strike rate of 115.72.
Bhanuka Rajapaksa had a magnificent Asia Cup. He smashed 191 runs in six matches at an average of 47.75 and strike rate of 149.21. This includes a man of the match 71* off 45 balls in the Final.
The excellent Wanindu Hasaranga continues to impress. In 11 T20Is this year, Hasaranga has taken 19 wickets at an average of 17.57 and strike rate of 12.9. Against Namibia last year, he took 2/29.
Maheesh Theekshana was man of the match against Namibia last year, with 3/25. He dismissed Stephan Baard, Zane Green and Jan Frylinck.
Watch out for the impressive Dilshan Madushanka. He took six wickets in the Asia Cup at an economy of 7.75. Four of these scalps came at the death, where he took a wicket every 7.5 deliveries.
Namibia:
Gerard Erasmus is 73 away from 1,000 T20I runs. The skipper averages 34.33 and strikes at 131.48, and he will be vital in setting up a platform for the Namibians.
This year, Erasmus has struck 254 runs in eight T20Is at an average of 50.80 and strike rate of 133.68. This includes one fifty and one hundred.
All-rounders David Wiese, Jan Frylinck and JJ Smit will be crucial to Namibia’s hopes. Smit has taken eight wickets in just three T20Is this year, while Frylinck has taken seven in eight matches and Wiese has five in five.
In 35 T20s this year, Wiese has smashed 492 runs at a strike rate of 161.31. He also has 33 wickets to his name at a respectable economy of 7.74.
Bernard Scholtz is conceding just 5.82 runs per over in eight T20Is this year (eight wickets). He dismissed Pathum Nissanka LBW in last year’s T20 World Cup.

Cricket News: Afghanistan cricket board in financial trouble | ICC funds not reaching Afghanistan due to international sanctions
The funds sent by the International Cricket Council (ICC) have not reached the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) since July 2021, ESPN Cricinforeports. It has become very difficult to transfer money to the country in the wake of international sanctions due to the Taliban takeover in August 2021.
ACB and ICC are engaged in talks to find out an alternative way such as routing the required money via non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Afghanistan. However, they haven’t zeroed upon a solution yet.
The ICC have made it clear to the Afghan board that funds cannot be sent to the country in the absence of a regulatory mechanism.
Afghanistan cricket board only able to remunerate 30 per cent of salaries
So far, the ACB has completed all the outstanding payments of its players and the coaching staff. However, it will be able to remunerate only 30 per cent of the salaries of its staff in Afghanistan.
The ACB was initially supposed to receive $40 billion from the ICC’s commercial rights cycle from 2016-17. It roughly translates to annual funds worth $5.71 billion. However, the sum was based on the ICC’s projected revenue of $2.7 billion during the aforementioned time period. With that amount coming down, the ACB was likely to receive $4.8 million from the ICC this year. However, the board last received money to the tune of $2.5 billion from the ICC back in July 2021.
Meanwhile, the board has arranged UAE residency visas for about 24 of its players in order to ensure that they get to travel across the world for different tournaments and series.
The ICC has even paid vendors on ACB’s behalf whenever the latter has hosted series’ in the UAE. This money is then adjusted with the funds that the ICC is supposed to send to the Afghan board.
ICC funds are the major source of revenue for the ACB considering that international teams do not tour the country and the board’s official T20 league is not broadcast beyond the borders of the country.

Adam Zampa might be taken to the cleaners by the English batsmen as the leg-spinner has a rather expensive economy rate of 10.43 in five T20Is against the opposition.
Even David Warner has a very standard record, i.e. an average of 21.07 to go with a strike rate of 118 in 14 T20Is against the Englishmen.
Matthew Wade is in some sublime touch as the southpaw has scored runs at a rate of 150.55 and average of 68.50 across 15 T20Is this year.
With 20 scalps in 12 (in 2022) games at an economy of 6.98, Josh Hazlewood will head into the World Cup with a terrific run of games and some outstanding outings on his back.

Jos Buttler does not have the best of records in T20Is in Australia. The English skipper has an average and strike rate of 26.57 and 123.18 respectively in seven T20Is Down Under.
Harry Brook has made a defining start to his T20I career with the 23-year-old notching 316 runs at an average and strike rate of 35.11 and 149.06 respectively in 13 matches this year.
Dawid Malan is back to striking at his finest after a rather timid 2021. This year, the southpaw has scored 430 runs in 14 T20Is at an average and strike rate of 35.83 and 144.30 respectively. Contrastingly, the batsman was scoring runs at a rate of only 116.01 across 16 T20Is in 2021.
England will be banking on Alex Hales to deliver the goods at the top of the order. The opener has considerable experience playing T20 cricket in the Big Bash League (BBL) in Australia. Hales averages 33.14 with a strike rate of 151.34 across 60 BBL innings so far.
Adil Rashid hasn’t had the best of outings in T20Is in Australia so far. The leg-spinner has picked two dismissals in four games at a bowling average and strike rate of 71.50 and 45 respectively.
Sam Curran has been superb in this series, taking wickets in both the middle and crunch death overs.

Reece Topley has emerged as one of England’s mainstays with the ball with an economy of 7.78 and 17 wickets in 15 T20Is in 2022.
The previous game was the first time since 2014 that Mitchell Starc did not open the bowling in a T20I.

The pitch and the ground pave the way for an even contest between the bat and the ball. Australia’s chance to host a T20 World Cup has finally arrived, two years after the postponement of the 2020 edition. The hosts will be out to defend their crown in familiar conditions, but they have questions hanging over the heads. Can Glenn Maxwell and Aaron Finch find their best form, or will the Aussies carry two out of form players in their top six? Can Mitchell Starc dominate the way he has in ODI World Cups? Is a bilateral series defeat to England just a blip or are there deeper concerns?
In addition to dealing with their own internal questions, the defending champions will also have to deal with a number of contenders and dark horses. Fellow Group 1 rivals England and New Zealand are two of the favourites for the title, with Afghanistan and possibly Sri Lanka also presenting a challenge. In Group 2, India will be desperate to end their ICC trophy drought, as will South Africa, who are vying to shake off their history of disappointment in showpiece tournaments. And, of course, Pakistan can never be counted out.
Finding out the answers to such questions should make for a fascinating tournament. The floor is open for individuals to rise to stardom or reach even greater heights, with the coveted trophy up for grabs at the famous MCG on November 13.
In this article, I will look at a few key predictions for the tournament; namely, the four teams to qualify out of round one, semi finalists and the winner.
Teams to qualify for Super 12: Sri Lanka, Namibia, West Indies, Zimbabwe
T20 World Cup 2022 predictions: Sri Lanka recently won the Asia Cup.
Sri Lanka and Namibia look the strongest on paper in Group A. The Lions, fresh off an Asia Cup triumph, come into this tournament full of confidence and will be backing themselves to take on the higher-ranked teams later in the piece. Namibia themselves have enjoyed a good 12 months too, including qualification into last year’s Super 12s. Indeed, their depth and experience, particularly in the all-rounders department, has them ahead of Netherlands and UAE.
Group B looks tougher to predict. West Indies are the favourites to top the group, and should do so. However, any of Ireland, Scotland and Zimbabwe are capable of reaching the Super 12s.
The reason why Zimbabwe will get over the line is the progress they have made in 2022. They won the Qualifier tournament earlier this year, and had their moments against India and Australia, albeit in the ODI format. Also, there is the Sikandar Raza factor, plus a capable seam attack led by Blessing Muzabarani.
Semi Finalists: Australia, England, India, South Africa
T20 World Cup 2022 predictions: South Africa have the team to do well in this World Cup.
In Group 1, we could easily see a situation where Australia, England and New Zealand all finish level on points. However, New Zealand’s past struggles in Australia is a concern, which is why the host nation and England are best-placed to qualify out of the group. As mentioned earlier, the talented Afghanistan and Sri Lanka (potentially) can cause issues, but making the top two in this group in Australia is a bridge too far for both.
According to the previous prediction, West Indies (winner of Group B) and Namibia (runners up in Group A) are likely to join Group 2 that also consists of Bangladesh. It is difficult to see any of these three winning enough games to finish in the top two, so logically, India, Pakistan and South Africa are fighting for the two spots.
While the absence of Jasprit Bumrah is a blow for India, their batting depth is too hard to ignore. Pakistan are certainly a chance with Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz capable of taking games away with the bat, but Babar Azam’s team often need a game to follow a certain pattern. First, runs up top for Babar himself and Mohammad Rizwan is key. Second, wickets up front from the excellent Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah, who are both a little short on match time, will also help dictate how they travel.
My pick is South Africa. In terms of middle order depth, not many teams boast the talent the Proteas have. Also, their pace attack is up there with the best especially for these conditions, and the Shamsi-Maharaj spin duo has come a long way over the past 12 months. The form of Temba Bavuma is a concern, but there is enough depth to cover.
Winner: Australia
As mentioned, two out of form players in the top six is a concern for the host nation. However, Aaron Finch’s leadership qualities and Glenn Maxwell’s high ceiling can come to the fore. Also, Australia is often a different beast in World Cups, and assuming they qualify to the Semi Finals of a home tournament, they will be very tough to beat.
In addition, Australia boast a powerful batting lineup right the way down their order, plus a bowling attack filled with experience. Tim David’s presence adds another dimension, along with the power and finishing ability of Marcus Stoinis and Matthew Wade respectively. Australia should get enough solid platforms with the likes of David Warner and Mitchell Marsh up top, so they will often be well placed for big totals.
In the end, Australia’s all-round ability, knowledge of the home conditions and record in World Cups will see them lift the trophy come November 13.
