The wait is over. The highly anticipated 2022 T20 World Cup is upon us, with two promising teams set to kick off the tournament. Sri Lanka, fresh off a magnificent Asia Cup triumph, will be seeking not only qualification to the Super 12s, but making a mark in that stage. Namibia, who qualified for the Super 12s last year, have much of the core that performed so admirably in the UAE. So, both units have positives from recent months to build on.

While the Sri Lankans can have visions of challenging higher ranked sides, they must be wary of looking too far ahead too soon. Namibia enter this tournament as a well-balanced outfit, with a number of bowling options to turn to. Thus, a strong start for Sri Lanka – the kind that held them in good stead in the Asia Cup – will be key as they aim to set a platform for Dasun Shanaka and the dangerous Bhanuka Rajapaksa.

So, how Namibia handle Sri Lanka’s big hitters will be key, especially with small straight boundaries at Geelong. Also, how Namibia’s batting lineup copes with the Lions’ mix of strong pace and spin options will make for interesting viewing. If the Namibians can put on a solid show, it will hold them in good stead for the remainder of this all-important group stage.

SL vs NAM Possible Playing XI

Dushmantha Chameera should slot into the XI that won the Asia Cup Final against Pakistan.

Sri Lanka: 1. Pathum Nissanka, 2. Kusal Mendis (wk), 3. Dhananjaya de Silva, 4. Danushka Gunathilaka, 5. Bhanuka Rajapaksa, 6. Dasun Shanaka (c), 7. Wanindu Hasaranga, 8. Chamika Karunaratne, 9. Maheesh Theekshana, 10. Dushmantha Chameera, 11. Dilshan Madushanka/Pramod Madushan Liyanagamage

Namibia have a number of seam-bowling options with David Wiese, Jan Frylinck and JJ Smit as the all-rounders. So, the Namibians could come in with two spin options at least.

Namibia: 1. Michael van Lingen, 2. Divan la Cock/Stephan Baard, 3. Gerhard Erasmus (c), 4. Jan Nicol Lofie-Eaton, 5. David Wiese, 6. Jan Frylinck, 7. JJ Smit, 8. Zane Green (wk), 9. Bernard Scholtz, 10. Ruben Trumpelmann, 11. Pikky Ya France

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Sri Lanka:

  • Kusal Mendis when he opens in T20Is: 20 inns, 602 runs, avg. 31.68, SR 142.65. In all other positions, Mendis has scored 234 runs at an average of 11.14 and strike rate of 97.90.
  • Pathum Nissanka is Sri Lanka’s leading run-scorer in T20Is this year. The opener has struck 499 runs at an average of 31.18 and strike rate of 114.71, with four fifties.
  • In T20Is in Australia, Nissanka has scored 184 runs in five matches at an average of 36.80 and strike rate of 115.72.
  • Bhanuka Rajapaksa had a magnificent Asia Cup. He smashed 191 runs in six matches at an average of 47.75 and strike rate of 149.21. This includes a man of the match 71* off 45 balls in the Final.
  • The excellent Wanindu Hasaranga continues to impress. In 11 T20Is this year, Hasaranga has taken 19 wickets at an average of 17.57 and strike rate of 12.9. Against Namibia last year, he took 2/29.
  • Maheesh Theekshana was man of the match against Namibia last year, with 3/25. He dismissed Stephan Baard, Zane Green and Jan Frylinck.
  • Watch out for the impressive Dilshan Madushanka. He took six wickets in the Asia Cup at an economy of 7.75. Four of these scalps came at the death, where he took a wicket every 7.5 deliveries.

Namibia:

  • Gerard Erasmus is 73 away from 1,000 T20I runs. The skipper averages 34.33 and strikes at 131.48, and he will be vital in setting up a platform for the Namibians.
  • This year, Erasmus has struck 254 runs in eight T20Is at an average of 50.80 and strike rate of 133.68. This includes one fifty and one hundred.
  • All-rounders David Wiese, Jan Frylinck and JJ Smit will be crucial to Namibia’s hopes. Smit has taken eight wickets in just three T20Is this year, while Frylinck has taken seven in eight matches and Wiese has five in five.
  • In 35 T20s this year, Wiese has smashed 492 runs at a strike rate of 161.31. He also has 33 wickets to his name at a respectable economy of 7.74.
  • Bernard Scholtz is conceding just 5.82 runs per over in eight T20Is this year (eight wickets). He dismissed Pathum Nissanka LBW in last year’s T20 World Cup.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Sri Lanka and Namibia have met once before in a T20I. It was at last year’s World Cup, where Sri Lanka bowled Namibia out for just 99. The Lions then chased the target with seven wickets and 39 balls to spare.
  • In that game, Namibia reduced Sri Lanka to 26/3 after 5.1 overs.
  • Dasun Shanaka in T20Is this year: 17 inns, 419 runs, avg. 34.91, SR 143.49.

Simonds Stadium Geelong Pitch Report and Weather

Geelong hosted three BBL games back in January 2022. The average first innings score was 158, but it must be taken into account that Brisbane Heat were severely affected by COVID-19 in their score of 128.

The straight boundaries are short, and one side of the ground is usually shorter too. So, the bowling side will be aiming to be as disciplined with their line and length as possible.

After torrential rainfall across Victoria in recent times, the weather conditions look much more promising. But, there is a chance of showers in the afternoon in Geelong.

Afghanistan cricket board in some financial trouble

Cricket News: Afghanistan cricket board in financial trouble | ICC funds not reaching Afghanistan due to international sanctions

The funds sent by the International Cricket Council (ICC) have not reached the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) since July 2021, ESPN Cricinfo reports. It has become very difficult to transfer money to the country in the wake of international sanctions due to the Taliban takeover in August 2021.

ACB and ICC are engaged in talks to find out an alternative way such as routing the required money via non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Afghanistan. However, they haven’t zeroed upon a solution yet.

The ICC have made it clear to the Afghan board that funds cannot be sent to the country in the absence of a regulatory mechanism.

Afghanistan cricket board only able to remunerate 30 per cent of salaries

So far, the ACB has completed all the outstanding payments of its players and the coaching staff. However, it will be able to remunerate only 30 per cent of the salaries of its staff in Afghanistan.

The ACB was initially supposed to receive $40 billion from the ICC’s commercial rights cycle from 2016-17. It roughly translates to annual funds worth $5.71 billion. However, the sum was based on the ICC’s projected revenue of $2.7 billion during the aforementioned time period. With that amount coming down, the ACB was likely to receive $4.8 million from the ICC this year. However, the board last received money to the tune of $2.5 billion from the ICC back in July 2021.

Meanwhile, the board has arranged UAE residency visas for about 24 of its players in order to ensure that they get to travel across the world for different tournaments and series.

The ICC has even paid vendors on ACB’s behalf whenever the latter has hosted series’ in the UAE. This money is then adjusted with the funds that the ICC is supposed to send to the Afghan board.

ICC funds are the major source of revenue for the ACB considering that international teams do not tour the country and the board’s official T20 league is not broadcast beyond the borders of the country.

AUS vs ENG 3rd T20 Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report

AUS vs ENG 3rd T20 Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report | AUS vs ENG 3rd T20 Dream11 Prediction Today | Canberra Pitch Report

England will be facing off against Australia in the final T20I of their three-match series at the Manuka Oval in Canberra on Friday. The visitors are already leading 2-0 and will be aiming for a clean sweep in what will be a massive confidence booster just prior to the T20 World Cup. The Australians will be looking to make amends after a couple of narrow losses but it appears that they will come into the World T20 in their most optimum T20I XI possible. So without further ado, let us have a look at a comprehensive preview and the Dream XI team predictions for the upcoming T20I between the two aforementioned sides.

AUS vs ENG 3rd T20I Possible Playing XI

Australia will most likely opt for an unchanged XI as this side certainly has the potential to outclass even the best of T20 teams on their day.

Australia: 1. Aaron Finch (c), 2. David Warner, 3. Mitchell Marsh, 4. Glenn Maxwell, 5. Marcus Stoinis, 6. Tim David, 7. Matthew Wade (wk), 8. Pat Cummins, 9. Mitchell Starc, 10. Adam Zampa, 11. Josh Hazlewood

England could rest some of their key players or choose to go for the kill by fielding the same XI that played the last game. We assume that a 3-0 series win in Australia is too fine an opportunity to let go off just before the commencement of a World Cup. Hence, England might as well bring their A-game to the table in Canberra, unless they wish to give Mark Wood a run.

England: 1. Alex Hales, 2. Jos Buttler (c & wk), 3. Dawid Malan, 4. Ben Stokes, 5. Harry Brook, 6. Moeen Ali, 7. Sam Curran, 8. David Willey, 9. Chris Jordan, 10. Reece Topley/Mark Wood, 11. Adil Rashid

AUS vs ENG Head-to-Head Stats & Key Players

Australia:

  • Glenn Maxwell has a rather middling record of an average of 23.62 and strike rate of 140.63 in 14 T20Is against England. He, however, has been out of touch lately with an average and strike rate of only 15.75 and 115.24 respectively in 14 T20Is in 2022 so far.
  • Adam Zampa might be taken to the cleaners by the English batsmen as the leg-spinner has a rather expensive economy rate of 10.43 in five T20Is against the opposition.
  • Even David Warner has a very standard record, i.e. an average of 21.07 to go with a strike rate of 118 in 14 T20Is against the Englishmen.
  • Matthew Wade is in some sublime touch as the southpaw has scored runs at a rate of 150.55 and average of 68.50 across 15 T20Is this year.
  • With 20 scalps in 12 (in 2022) games at an economy of 6.98, Josh Hazlewood will head into the World Cup with a terrific run of games and some outstanding outings on his back.

England:

  • Jos Buttler does not have the best of records in T20Is in Australia. The English skipper has an average and strike rate of 26.57 and 123.18 respectively in seven T20Is Down Under.
  • Harry Brook has made a defining start to his T20I career with the 23-year-old notching 316 runs at an average and strike rate of 35.11 and 149.06 respectively in 13 matches this year.
  • Dawid Malan is back to striking at his finest after a rather timid 2021. This year, the southpaw has scored 430 runs in 14 T20Is at an average and strike rate of 35.83 and 144.30 respectively. Contrastingly, the batsman was scoring runs at a rate of only 116.01 across 16 T20Is in 2021.
  • England will be banking on Alex Hales to deliver the goods at the top of the order. The opener has considerable experience playing T20 cricket in the Big Bash League (BBL) in Australia. Hales averages 33.14 with a strike rate of 151.34 across 60 BBL innings so far.
  • Adil Rashid hasn’t had the best of outings in T20Is in Australia so far. The leg-spinner has picked two dismissals in four games at a bowling average and strike rate of 71.50 and 45 respectively.
  • Sam Curran has been superb in this series, taking wickets in both the middle and crunch death overs.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-head: Matches 23, Australia 10, England 11, 2 N/R.
  • Australia has won only three of their nine T20Is against England since 2018.
  • Moeen Ali has been in some promising touch right throughout 2022. He has notched 458 runs at a strike rate of 164.16 across 20 T20Is. In addition to that, the off-spinner has also taken 12 wickets at an impressive bowling strike rate of 16.
  • Reece Topley has emerged as one of England’s mainstays with the ball with an economy of 7.78 and 17 wickets in 15 T20Is in 2022.
  • The previous game was the first time since 2014 that Mitchell Starc did not open the bowling in a T20I.

Manuka Oval Canberra Pitch Report and Weather

The pitch and the ground pave the way for an even contest between the bat and the ball. The track might benefit batsmen early on but the dimensions of the field are such that the bowlers come into play at some point or the other usually. One can expect a game with the score ranging around 170-180 runs this time around.

After showers during the day, rain is less likely in the evening. The temperature will hover around 11°C at the time of the game.

AUS vs ENG 3rd T20 Match Prediction: Who will win?

Australia have too good of a lineup to not emerge victorious in even one of the games of this series. One can rely on the defending champions of the T20 World Cup to really come to the fore and secure a consolation win in the last game of the series.

T20 World Cup 2022 predictions: Who will win the tournament?

Cricket News: T20 World Cup 2022 predictions: Who will win the tournament? | Predictions for the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia

Australia’s chance to host a T20 World Cup has finally arrived, two years after the postponement of the 2020 edition. The hosts will be out to defend their crown in familiar conditions, but they have questions hanging over the heads. Can Glenn Maxwell and Aaron Finch find their best form, or will the Aussies carry two out of form players in their top six? Can Mitchell Starc dominate the way he has in ODI World Cups? Is a bilateral series defeat to England just a blip or are there deeper concerns?

In addition to dealing with their own internal questions, the defending champions will also have to deal with a number of contenders and dark horses. Fellow Group 1 rivals England and New Zealand are two of the favourites for the title, with Afghanistan and possibly Sri Lanka also presenting a challenge. In Group 2, India will be desperate to end their ICC trophy drought, as will South Africa, who are vying to shake off their history of disappointment in showpiece tournaments. And, of course, Pakistan can never be counted out.

Finding out the answers to such questions should make for a fascinating tournament. The floor is open for individuals to rise to stardom or reach even greater heights, with the coveted trophy up for grabs at the famous MCG on November 13.

Predictions for the 2022 T20 World Cup

In this article, I will look at a few key predictions for the tournament; namely, the four teams to qualify out of round one, semi finalists and the winner.

Teams to qualify for Super 12: Sri Lanka, Namibia, West Indies, Zimbabwe

Cricket News: T20 World Cup 2022 predictions: Who will win the tournament? | Predictions for the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia
T20 World Cup 2022 predictions: Sri Lanka recently won the Asia Cup.

Sri Lanka and Namibia look the strongest on paper in Group A. The Lions, fresh off an Asia Cup triumph, come into this tournament full of confidence and will be backing themselves to take on the higher-ranked teams later in the piece. Namibia themselves have enjoyed a good 12 months too, including qualification into last year’s Super 12s. Indeed, their depth and experience, particularly in the all-rounders department, has them ahead of Netherlands and UAE.

Group B looks tougher to predict. West Indies are the favourites to top the group, and should do so. However, any of Ireland, Scotland and Zimbabwe are capable of reaching the Super 12s.

The reason why Zimbabwe will get over the line is the progress they have made in 2022. They won the Qualifier tournament earlier this year, and had their moments against India and Australia, albeit in the ODI format. Also, there is the Sikandar Raza factor, plus a capable seam attack led by Blessing Muzabarani.

Semi Finalists: Australia, England, India, South Africa

T20 World Cup 2022 predictions: South Africa have the team to do well in this World Cup.

In Group 1, we could easily see a situation where Australia, England and New Zealand all finish level on points. However, New Zealand’s past struggles in Australia is a concern, which is why the host nation and England are best-placed to qualify out of the group. As mentioned earlier, the talented Afghanistan and Sri Lanka (potentially) can cause issues, but making the top two in this group in Australia is a bridge too far for both.

According to the previous prediction, West Indies (winner of Group B) and Namibia (runners up in Group A) are likely to join Group 2 that also consists of Bangladesh. It is difficult to see any of these three winning enough games to finish in the top two, so logically, India, Pakistan and South Africa are fighting for the two spots.

While the absence of Jasprit Bumrah is a blow for India, their batting depth is too hard to ignore. Pakistan are certainly a chance with Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz capable of taking games away with the bat, but Babar Azam’s team often need a game to follow a certain pattern. First, runs up top for Babar himself and Mohammad Rizwan is key. Second, wickets up front from the excellent Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah, who are both a little short on match time, will also help dictate how they travel.

My pick is South Africa. In terms of middle order depth, not many teams boast the talent the Proteas have. Also, their pace attack is up there with the best especially for these conditions, and the Shamsi-Maharaj spin duo has come a long way over the past 12 months. The form of Temba Bavuma is a concern, but there is enough depth to cover.

Winner: Australia

As mentioned, two out of form players in the top six is a concern for the host nation. However, Aaron Finch’s leadership qualities and Glenn Maxwell’s high ceiling can come to the fore. Also, Australia is often a different beast in World Cups, and assuming they qualify to the Semi Finals of a home tournament, they will be very tough to beat.

In addition, Australia boast a powerful batting lineup right the way down their order, plus a bowling attack filled with experience. Tim David’s presence adds another dimension, along with the power and finishing ability of Marcus Stoinis and Matthew Wade respectively. Australia should get enough solid platforms with the likes of David Warner and Mitchell Marsh up top, so they will often be well placed for big totals.

In the end, Australia’s all-round ability, knowledge of the home conditions and record in World Cups will see them lift the trophy come November 13.

Usually when England are in Australia, anyone who even tries to obstruct the field would surely lead to mayhem. It was quite the opposite in Perth on Sunday, with Jos Buttler realising there is bigger fish to fry in the weeks ahead.

While the public widely questioned why there was no appeal, Buttler stood firm on his belief that a long tour, comprising of an upcoming T20 World Cup, requires focus on the task at hand. It was certainly the case for Buttler himself and Alex Hales as they were in fine touch on Sunday, but they will know they will come up against a more experienced Aussie attack this time around.

For Australia, their eight-run loss was not without positives. David Warner’s form is superb, as was Marcus Stoinis’ onslaught in the middle overs. One feels the missing piece of the puzzle remains Glenn Maxwell’s form, and if he fires here, Australia’s confidence can only grow.

AUS vs ENG 2nd T20 Possible Playing XI

Aaron Finch has confirmed he will open. So, Cameron Green is set to miss out.

Manuka Oval Canberra Pitch Report and Weather

Early in the season, Manuka Oval can be a belter for batting, but the bigger boundaries keeps bowlers in the game. Since the start of December 2020, the average first innings score at Canberra is 167.24, with the chasing team winning 11 of the 17 matches.

Partly cloudy conditions are forecast, with a cold evening expected. This may bring about some dew.

NZ vs BAN Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report: NZ Tri-Series Match 5

NZ vs BAN Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report: NZ Tri-Series Match 5 | NZ vs BAN Dream11 Prediction Today | Christchurch Pitch Report

It might seem like Dhaka or Lahore, but it’s Christchurch. Spin is playing a key role in this Tri-Series, and it is officially do or die for Bangladesh who are yet to win a game.

The Tigers’ lack of six-hitting is under the spotlight once again, with the team hitting a total of just five sixes in their two matches so far. Nurul Hasan was Bangladesh’s only six-hitter against New Zealand three days ago, and the task looks tougher today with New Zealand’s spinners bowling beautifully on a tired surface.

After their big win over Bangladesh on October 9, the Black Caps then thrashed Pakistan yesterday. Michael Bracewell won player of the match for the second straight outing, while the form of Finn Allen and Devon Conway is a big positive ahead of the World Cup. More of the same will be the order of the day ahead of what’s likely to be an appearance in the Tri-Series Final on Friday.

NZ vs BAN Possible Playing XI

New Zealand rested Trent Boult for the Pakistan game. They could look to bring him back for this clash.

New Zealand: 1. Finn Allen, 2. Devon Conway (wk), 3. Kane Williamson (c), 4. Glenn Phillips, 5. Mark Chapman, 6. Jimmy Neesham, 7. Michael Bracewell, 8. Mitchell Santner, 9. Ish Sodhi, 10. Tim Southee, 11.Trent Boult/Blair Tickner

Bangladesh could look to play an extra spinner.

Bangladesh: 1. Najmul Hossain Shanto, 2. Mehidy Hasan Miraz, 3. Litton Das, 4. Shakib Al Hasan (c), 5. Afif Hossain, 6. Mosaddek Hossain, 7. Nurul Hasan, 8. Yasir Ali, 9. Taskin Ahmed/Nasum Ahmed, 10. Hasan Mahmud, 11. Shoriful Islam/Mustafizur Rahman

  • Devon Conway has struck scores of 70* off 51 (vs Bangladesh) and 49* off 46 (vs Pakistan) in his last two matches.
  • Finn Allen made it seem he was batting on a different surface yesterday. He smashed a 42-ball 62, which included six sixes. Also, he has a strike rate of 172.00 in seven T20Is vs Bangladesh.
  • Michael Bracewell has taken figures of 2/14 and 2/11 in his past two matches. The off-spinner has found the perfect length, and is taking advantage of a wearing surface in Christchurch. Expect him to be key once again.
  • Mitchell Santner bowled nicely after a shaky start against Pakistan. Like Bracewell, Santner avoids bowling too many deliveries where batsmen can play a big shot off the front foot.
  • Against Bangladesh, Santner has taken four wickets in four matches at an economy of 6.21.
  • Ish Sodhi has taken 14 wickets in just six matches against Bangladesh at an average of 12.28 and economy of 7.58. On a surface where spin is playing a key role, there is a fair chance Sodhi will have figures in the wicket column.
  • Tim Southee in T20Is vs Bangladesh: 7 inns, 14 wickets, avg. 12.35, econ. 7.20.

Bangladesh:

  • The Tigers may be well served sending Nurul Hasan up the order. He has batted with good intent in this series, including a 12-ball 25* against New Zealand a few days ago.
  • Litton Das is Bangladesh’s leading run-scorer this series (50), with two starts to his name (35 and 15). His ability and placement against spin will be vital on a slow, turning surface.
  • Will Shakib Al Hasan bat as low as seven once again? Although Shakib has a poor T20I record vs NZ (133 runs, avg. 12.09), his experience will be vital in playing the spinners.
  • Expect Mosaddek Hossain to get more overs in these conditions. The off-spinner is Bangladesh’s leading wicket-taker in T20Is this year, with 11 in 24.3 overs at an average of 13.63.
  • Another bowler who can thrive on the Christchurch surface is Nasum Ahmed. The left-arm spinner has taken 10 wickets in eight T20Is against New Zealand at an economy of 6.29, many of which came on slow, turning pitches.
  • Mustafizur Rahman has struggled in T20Is in New Zealand (one wicket in four matches), but a slow pitch might suit his cutters nicely.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-head: Matches 16, New Zealand 13, Bangladesh 3.
  • In the last two matches of this Tri-Series, spinners have taken total figures of 10/235 off 37 overs (econ. 6.35).
  • Bangladesh have won just six of 24 completed T20Is since the start of the 2021 World Cup. Only two have come against Test playing nations.

Hagley Oval Christchurch Pitch Report and Weather

The used surface at Christchurch has really suited spin. Pakistan struggled yesterday, crawling to 130, which was nowhere near enough in the end.

Dew is not a factor in a day game, but the captain who wins the toss may look to chase. The team batting second has won all four matches so far in this Tri-Series. There is a chance of showers throughout the day.

NZ Tri-Series Match 5: NZ vs BAN Match Prediction – Who Will Win?

New Zealand should be too strong.

T20 World Cup Prediction: Who will win India vs Pakistan?

Cricket News: T20 World Cup Prediction: Who will win India vs Pakistan? | Looking forward to IND vs PAK at the MCG: Who will win between the two rivals?

Let’s talk about the next T20 2022 World Cup, which will take place in October and November in Australia. Before predicting who will win, let’s first analyze what the possible outcome of some very important matches could be.

One of the most highly anticipated matches in any tournament is India vs Pakistan. This is certainly the case once again, with a capacity crowd expected at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

Each has their strengths, but also some concerns that both sides will be aiming to exploit. With a competitive group 2 expected, victory in this contest could prove critical to Semi Final qualification later in the tournament.

India vs Pakistan

The arch-rivals met last year at the T20 World Cup, in which Pakistan managed to beat India in the tournament for the first time with a historic 10-wicket victory. Also, in the recent Asia Cup, both India and Pakistan won a game each against one another.

Both sides will be equally committed and doing their best to win as it is a very important match and one of the most influential in the Super 12. With some new additions to the Indian and Pakistani line-up, this match will be a delight for the fans. Our prediction for the India vs Pakistan match is to bite your nails, India will win given the greater depth of their middle order.

Australia vs New Zealand

This match will be another important and great part of the tournament. These two sides are neighboring countries like India and Pakistan, and their residents enjoy these trans-tasman contests. Both teams play good cricket and could count on incredible players and quality sportsmanship. It is also a treat for cricket fans from all over the world. According to us, Australia will take the lead on the scoreboard and win this match.

South Africa vs Bangladesh

Bangladesh have struggled in T20Is, especially since the start of the last World Cup. South Africa have shown promising form. If the Proteas are to do well, this is a game they should win. But, Bangladesh did beat South Africa in the ODI World Cup in 2019, so anything is possible.

These two teams will meet in Super 12, and our prediction for the game is South Africa will win this clash due to the power in their lineup and pace attack.

Opinion: Australia’s best XI for the T20 World Cup

Opinion: Australia’s best XI for the T20 World Cup | What should Australia’s playing XI be for the T20 World Cup?

To pick Steve Smith or to not pick Steve Smith? Should Australia play all three of Mitchell Marsh, Marcus Stoinis and Tim David, or does there need to be an insurance option in case of a collapse? Is Aaron Finch still capable of producing match-winning performances?

These questions have been rife in Australian circles ahead of their T20 World Cup defence on home soil. Also, the performances of Cameron Green and Nathan Ellis have put the spotlight on the selectors, with uncertainty remaining as to whether they will indeed be drafted into the World Cup squad.

Australia’s best XI for the 2022 World Cup

Assuming the squad remains as is, Australia will be best served picking the following XI, which offers a threat right down the order. More importantly, there is a clear role for each player.

1. David Warner

Opinion: Australia's best XI for the T20 World Cup | What should Australia's playing XI be for the T20 World Cup?
Australia’s best XI for the T20 World Cup – David Warner

Straightfoward. Arguably Australia’s greatest ever T20 player. The man of the tournament in the 2021 World Cup is heading into the 2022 edition in fine touch, with consecutive 70+ scores against West Indies and England.

2. Aaron Finch (c)

If Australia were to look past Finch, they would have done so at the end of last year’s successful World Cup campaign to give an opportunity for a new captain to settle into the role. However, the selectors have persisted with Finch, and he is in Australia’s best XI currently mainly due to his leadership capabilities and tactical awareness.

Also, Finch’s T20I form, while not great, has been more promising than his wretched ODI form earlier this year. He will be back opening in the England T20Is at Canberra, and his role will be to take advantage of the powerplay and avoid soaking up deliveries.

3. Mitchell Marsh

Time at the crease is vital for Marsh ahead of the World Cup, but his potential was on show as he led Australia to victory in the 2021 Final. His power game will be important for Australia in this tournament, and doubts around his ability against spin can somewhat be quelled by the fact that campaign is being held early in the season where the pitches will be fresh.

4. Glenn Maxwell

Maxwell is under the spotlight, and rightly so. His T20I form this year has been diabolical, hitting just 181 runs 12 innings at an average of 16.50 and strike rate of 118.3.

However, leaving a player like Maxwell out of a World Cup XI is an even bigger risk than playing him. His ceiling is immense, highlighted by an average of 39.10 and strike rate of 167.4 in all T20s this year. Couple that with his bowling and fielding capabilities, and the Big Show can turn a game around in no time.

5. Marcus Stoinis

It can be argued that Australia would not have won the 2021 World Cup without Marcus Stoinis. His knocks against South Africa and Pakistan were crucial in the final analysis, displaying the calmness required in pressure situations.

Also, as shown in his powerful 15-ball 35 in the first T20I against England, Stoinis has improved as a middle order player in recent years. Since the start of 2020, Stoinis has struck 535 runs between overs 7-16 when batting at five or six at a strike rate of 144.20. In the death overs, this bumps up to 446 runs at a strike rate of 167.67.

6. Tim David

Opinion: Australia's best XI for the T20 World Cup | What should Australia's playing XI be for the T20 World Cup?
Australia’s best XI for the T20 World Cup – Tim David

Tim David rounds out the top six. Between overs 16 and 20 in all T20s this year, David has struck 679 runs at a strike rate of 202.08. A player of his calibre can create headaches, forcing opposition think tanks and captains to devise a well-calculated plan to dismiss him as early as possible.

The aformentioned top six means Steve Smith misses out. This is not to say Smith is of no value in T20s, but to suggest he should be in the side in case of a collapse is quite an un-Australian way of thinking. Central to Australia’s success over the years has been the mindset to play attacking cricket on the front foot, with no thought or fear of failure. This top six reflects that.

By playing Smith, you likely lose the proven ability of Marsh at three, power and bowling option of Stoinis, or the sheer brute force of David at the backend.

7. Matthew Wade (wk)

An easy pick. Wade has been magnificent since the beginning of 2021, reinventing himself as Australia’s finisher. In this period, he has smashed 230 runs between overs 16 and 20 at an average of 46.00 and strike rate of 188.50.

8. Pat Cummins

Cummins will be key in the powerplay and middle overs for Australia. His economy rate in T20Is is a respectable 7.28, with 50 wickets to his name in 44 matches.

9. Mitchell Starc

It’s a big tournament for Starc. He has dominated in ODI World Cups, but his 2021 T20 World Cup campaign left plenty to be desired. Nonetheless, his ability to nail those yorkers at the death will be crucial in Australia’s title defence.

10. Adam Zampa

Zampa has quickly become a vital member of Australia’s T20I unit. He was key in Australia going all the way last year, with his control and excellent wrong-un a key asset that Finch will no doubt turn to in the middle overs.

11. Josh Hazlewood

The most improved T20 player in the past couple of years, in Australian circles at least. Since the start of 2021, Hazlewood has taken 74 wickets in 47 T20s at an average of 17.85 and economy of 7.41. Also, he concedes less than ten per over at the death in this period, which is certainly respectable, and he will no doubt be tasked with finishing things off well with the ball.

Calls grow louder for Nathan Ellis to be Australia regular over Kane Richardson

Cricket News: Calls grow louder for Nathan Ellis to be Australia regular over Kane Richardson | Is Ellis in Australia’s World cup squad?

Australia went down in their opening T20I against England by eight runs at Optus Stadium in Perth on Sunday. However, it was pacer Nathan Ellis who grabbed all the eyeballs with his incredible returns of three wickets for 20 runs in his four-over spell. Ellis dismissed the key trio of Jos Buttler, Moeen Ali and Sam Curran to make a strong case for him to be drafted into the team’s scheme of things leading up to the World Cup.

The 28-year-old is not a part of 15-member squad for the mega-tournament. Ellis has picked 15 wickets in his five T20Is so far. His economy rate is a partly 6.40 and he has taken 40.54 per cent of his team’s wickets in these matches. His promising performances have led many to call for him to replace Kane Richardson in the Australian squad. Here are some of the Twitter reactions on this issue since the game on Sunday.

Fans call for Nathan Ellis to replace the likes of Kane Richardson – and even Pat Cummins – in Australia T20I colours

“Nathan Ellis was outstanding on a really good batting surface … he was unbelievable. He’s a fantastic bowler. He’s done it at domestic level, he’s done it every chance he’s had with Australia. He’s been so close a lot of times,” Australian skipper Aaron Finch spoke highly of the promising pacer in the post-match presentation ceremony.

“The fact he keeps fronting up, he’s been 12th man on a lot of tours, the fact that every time he gets an opportunity (he takes it). He trains the house down, he’s just a brilliant person to have around the team,” Finch further lauded the 28-year-old’s work ethic.

Though highly unlikely, it remains to be seen if Australia decides to shake up things in their squad just before the tournament begins in order to defend their T20 World Cup title. The two teams will next meet at the Manuka Oval in Canberra on Wednesday for the second T20I of the series.

As the cold weather continues to engulf Christchurch in early October, the heat ramps up on New Zealand and Bangladesh. In the context of this Tri-Series, both sides are in need of a win to keep up with high-flying Pakistan. However, in the grander scheme of things, both units are in need of form and confidence with a World Cup right on the doorstep.

Bangladesh were in the contest against Pakistan, but their collapse, due mainly to a lack of power in their lineup, saw them fall short. A faster start in the powerplay will certainly help, but dominating this New Zealand attack will be a challenge. Indeed, if the returning Shakib Al Hasan can contribute like the world knows he can, it makes the Tigers a much more formidable outfit.

New Zealand, after a poor tour of Australia, need a win here. Their decision to bat first against Pakistan in the desire to defend didn’t work, as the batting effort and dew saw them fall short of victory. The form of Kane Williamson remains a concern, so a freeflowing knock here is the order of the day, as is New Zealand’s finishing department after a tough outing yesterday.

NZ vs BAN Possible Playing XI

New Zealand may look to stick with the same XI, if Mitchell Santner is still unavailable due to the birth of his first child last week. Also, it will be interesting to see if the Black Caps pick Martin Guptill.

New Zealand: 1. Finn Allen/Martin Guptill, 2. Devon Conway (wk), 3. Kane Williamson (c), 4. Glenn Phillips, 5. Mark Chapman, 6. Jimmy Neesham, 7. Michael Bracewell, 8. Tim Southee, 9. Ish Sodhi, 10. Blair Tickner, 11. Trent Boult

Shakib Al Hasan is set to play. Yasir Ali could be the player to make way, despite his 21-ball 42 last game against Pakistan.

Bangladesh: 1. Mehidy Hasan Miraz, 2. Sabbir Rahman, 3. Litton Das, 4. Shakib Al Hasan (c), 5. Afif Hossain, 6. Nurul Hasan (wk), 7. Mosaddek Hossain, 8. Taskin Ahmed, 9. Nasum Ahmed, 10. Hasan Mahmud, 11. Mustafizur Rahman

NZ vs BAN Head-to-Head Stats & Key Players

New Zealand:

  • Kane Williamson is in need of runs. Against Bangladesh, Williamson has scored 187 runs in four innings at an average of 62.33 and strike rate of 119.11. Can he improve on the strike rate?
  • Finn Allen strikes at 190.24 against Bangladesh. This includes 71 off 29 balls last year. Devon Conway also has good numbers against Bangladesh, with scores of 92 and 15 at a strike rate of 175.41.
  • Bangladesh could play two left-arm spinners, which represents an opportunity for Mark Chapman. He struck 21 runs off five balls against Mohammad Nawaz yesterday.
  • Tim Southee has taken 12 wickets in six matches against Bangladesh. He averages just 11.58 with an economy of just 6.95.
  • Blair Tickner has taken 11 wickets in just five T20s at Christchurch. He bowled with good pace at times against Pakistan yesterday, and he could be a factor again under lights.
  • Trent Boult has taken 22 wickets in 21 innings this year, with an economy of around eight an over. Should he play in this match, it will be his first T20I against Bangladesh since 2017.

Bangladesh:

  • Can Shakib Al Hasan improve on his poor batting record against New Zealand? In 10 matches, he has scored 117 runs at an average of 11.70 and strike rate of 98.32. Also, he has taken six wickets at 43.50.
  • Litton Das looked in good touch against Pakistan. The right-hander scored a 26-ball 35, with his placement a key feature of his game. This year, he has scored 310 runs at an average of 28.18 and strike rate of 137.77.
  • Afif Hossain is Bangladesh’s top scorer in T20Is this year (366). He averages 36.60 with a strike rate of 127.08.
  • Mosaddek Hossain is striking at 141.41 in nine T20I innings this year. He has also taken 11 wickets at an economy of 6.08, and Bangladesh could look at using his off-spin against New Zealand’s left-handers.
  • Taskin Ahmed bowled beautifully against Pakistan (2/25). But, can he improve his record against New Zealand? He has taken three wickets in four matches at an average of 48.00 and high economy of 10.41.
  • Mustafizur Rahman has taken 14 wickets in eight matches against New Zealand. But, most of those wickets have come in the subcontinent. In T20s in New Zealand, the Fizz has taken just one wicket in four matches.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-head: Matches 15, New Zealand 12, Bangladesh 3.
  • 10 of New Zealand’s 12 wins against Bangladesh have come when batting first.
  • Bangladesh have won just six of 23 completed T20Is since the start of the 2021 T20 World Cup. Only two of those have come against Test playing nations.

Hagley Oval Christchurch Pitch Report and Weather

Another cold evening is forecast for Christchurch, with temperatures expected to dip below 10 degrees under lights. Like in the New Zealand-Pakistan game yesterday, there is likely to be a lot of dew in the second innings.

Batting first, New Zealand found the going tough on a slightly two-paced wicket. Under lights, the ball skidded on much better. Expect the captain who wins the toss to choose to bat second.
