Often when England are in town, the hype and banter ahead of an Ashes series is fantastic. This time around, things are focused more on the weeks ahead, with this three-match T20I series serving as final preparation for two of the World Cup contenders.

Australia are coming off a 2-0 series win over West Indies, with the second victory far more convincing than the first. Tim David’s prowess puts even greater pressure on Steve Smith’s place in the XI, as does the likely return of Marcus Stoinis, who offers a bowling option. This contest in Perth is one where the spotlight is on the batting lineup, with Australia’s first choice bowling attack rested for this match out west. If the likes of Finch, Marsh and co. can fire, it puts Australia in a better place after what has been a shaky home season with the bat so far.

England are also coming off a successful series, overcoming Pakistan 4-3 away from home. The emergence of Harry Brook as an international cricketer is a huge positive, and England now have the luxury of adding Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes in their XI. The fitness of the likes of Liam Livingstone and Chris Jordan is something England want sorted ahead of the World Cup, but their side on paper looks a testing one for Australia’s XI in Perth.

AUS vs ENG 1st T20 Possible Playing XI

Australia’s frontline seamers are rested for this clash. So too Adam Zampa and Glenn Maxwell. With Mitchell Marsh and Marcus Stoinis likely to play, it seems as though Steve Smith will not find a place in the XI.

Australia: 1. David Warner, 2. Cameron Green, 3. Mitchell Marsh, 4. Aaron Finch (c), 5. Marcus Stoinis, 6. Tim David, 7. Matthew Wade (wk), 8. Daniel Sams, 9. Ashton Agar, 10. Nathan Ellis, 11. Kane Richardson

England’s big call will be whether to play Alex Hales or Phil Salt – or even Ben Stokes – as opener with the returning Jos Buttler. Liam Livingstone is still unavailable with an ankle injury, and Chris Jordan may be kept for the Canberra T20Is.

England: 1. Jos Buttler (c & wk), 2. Alex Hales/Phil Salt, 3. Dawid Malan, 4. Ben Stokes, 5. Harry Brook, 6. Moeen Ali, 7. Sam Curran, 8. Chris Woakes, 9. Adil Rashid, 10. Mark Wood, 11. Reece Topley

AUS vs ENG Head-to-Head Stats & Key Players

Australia:

  • David Warner struck form with a 41-ball 75 at the Gabba two nights ago. But, he has a poor record against England: 12 inns, 218 runs, avg. 18.16, SR 111.79. It will be interesting to see how he fares.
  • Aaron Finch has an outstanding record against England. He has scored 594 runs in 13 matches at an average of 59.40 and strike rate of 163.18. Can he find his best form ahead of the World Cup?
  • Mitchell Marsh has scored the most runs of any player in T20s at Perth Stadium. Australia’s number three has smashed 363 runs in 15 innings at an average of 40.33 and strike rate of 156.47.
  • Tim David showed his brute force in a brilliant 20-ball 42 against West Indies. In all T20s this year, David has smashed 1,215 runs at an average of 27.00 and superb strike rate of 172.83.
  • Kane Richardson has taken eight wickets in four T20s at Perth Stadium at an average of 9.63 and economy of 5.13.
  • Nathan Ellis impressed in India recently. He took 3/30 in his only match, part of 12 wickets in four T20Is so far in his career. But, if picked, this will be his first T20 for Australia outside the subcontinent.

England:

  • Jos Buttler is back. The captain has the most runs for England against Australia in T20Is, with 392 at an average of 39.20 and strike rate of 143.58.
  • Alex Hales has plenty of experience playing T20 cricket in Australia. In 65 matches down under, Hales has struck 1,926 runs at an average of 31.57 and superb strike rate of 150.70. This includes a score of 85 at Perth.
  • Harry Brook was out of this world against Pakistan. He scored 238 runs in six innings at an average of 79.33 and strike rate of 163.01.
  • With Finch likely to bat at four, this offers Adil Rashid an opportunity. The legspinner has dismissed Finch twice in 46 balls in T20Is, conceding just 54 in the process.
  • Overall against Australia, Rashid has taken 11 wickets in eight matches at an average of 19.72 and economy of 7.00.
  • Chris Woakes will be key in the powerplay. He has dismissed Warner twice in 24 balls in T20s, conceding just 33. Also, Woakes took 3/26 in his last T20I, against Pakistan.
  • Expect Mark Wood to make the ball fly through on a pacy Perth Stadium track. The pacer took overall figures of 6/44 in eight overs in the recent series against Pakistan, where he was bowling rapidly.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-head: Matches 21, Australia 10, England 9, 2 N/R.
  • England have won four of the past five T20Is between the teams.
  • Matthew Wade between overs 16-20 in T20Is since the start of 2021: 107 balls faced, 209 runs, strike rate 195.3.
  • Watch out Ashton Agar. Against left-arm orthodox since the start of 2021, Moeen Ali has smashed 236 runs at a strike rate of 184.38. However, he has been dismissed eight times.
  • Reece Topley has taken the most wickets for England in T20Is this year (14) at an average of 28.28 and economy of 7.61.

Optus Stadium Perth Pitch Report and Weather

Clear conditions are forecast for Perth, but a cool evening is expected. So, there may be dew in the second innings, which should prompt the captain who wins the toss to chase.

In six men’s T20s on this ground since the start of 2021, the average first innings score is 169.33. The team batting first won five of those matches, but this game is being played earlier in the season, which makes dew a possible factor.

NZ vs PAK Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report: NZ Tri-Series Match 2

NZ vs PAK Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report: NZ Tri-Series Match 2 | NZ vs PAK Dream11 Prediction Today | Christchurch Pitch Report

T20 World Cup preparation continues to heat up in chilly Christchurch as Pakistan look to build on their first up win yesterday, this time against New Zealand. The Black Caps, who often feature in the business end of World Cups, will be seeking to gain important momentum ahead of the big tournament, with this Tri-Series the perfect opportunity to gain form and confidence.

In terms of Pakistan, their victory against Bangladesh was comfortable in the end, but did the match tell us anything different about Babar Azam’s team? The middle order underwhelmed once again, with Rizwan’s ability to bat deep enabling them to reach 167/5. One still gets the feeling that if the Black Caps can pick up early wickets in the powerplay, Pakistan might not have the form in the middle order to recover.

Indeed, that will be the focus for New Zealand today, along with runs for the likes of Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson. Both have been under-par in 2022, so finding form right before the World Cup can be a big boost. With Devon Conway, Glenn Phillips and Finn Allen promising plenty, the Black Caps can go into the showpiece tournament with a well-rounded and confident batting lineup.

NZ vs PAK Possible Playing XI

Daryl Mitchell is out of the tri-series with a fractured finger. Mitchell Santner will join the squad over the weekend after the birth of his first child last week.

New Zealand: 1. Martin Guptill, 2. Finn Allen, 3. Kane Williamson (c), 4. Devon Conway, 5. Glenn Phillips (wk), 6. James Neesham, 7. Michael Bracewell, 8. Tim Southee, 9. Ish Sodhi, 10. Lockie Ferguson, 11. Trent Boult

Pakistan could look to stick with the same XI that prevailed over Bangladesh yesterday.

Pakistan: 1. Mohammad Rizwan (wk), 2. Babar Azam (c), 3. Shan Masood, 4. Haider Ali, 5. Iftikhar Ahmed, 6. Asif Ali, 7. Shadab Khan, 8. Mohammad Nawaz, 9. Mohammad Wasim, 10. Haris Rauf, 11. Shahnawaz Dahani

NZ vs PAK Head-to-Head Stats & Key Players

New Zealand:

  • Spotlight is on Martin Guptill after what has been an indifferent run of form recently. He has the most runs for New Zealand against Pakistan, with 526 in 19 matches at an average of 29.22 and strike rate of 133.84.
  • Devon Conway smashed 99* on this ground against Australia last year. Against Pakistan, the left-hander has scored one half-century in three T20I innings.
  • Glenn Phillips has struck the most T20I runs for New Zealand in 2022 (319). The keeper-batsman is averaging 53.16 with a superb strike rate of 145.00.
  • In T20s at Hagley Oval, Phillips has scored 143 runs in five innings at an average of 28.60 and strike rate of 115.32.
  • James Neesham’s strike rate is 207.60 in T20Is this year. Between overs 16 and 20, this bumps up to 232.9 (184 runs off 79 balls).
  • However, Neesham has historically struggled against Pakistan (31 runs in five innings), so whether he can turn this around here will be interesting to see.
  • Michael Bracewell will be key if Mitch Santner is unavailable. The all-rounder is striking at 206.97 with the bat in T20Is this year. He has also taken nine wickets in six innings. Given the spinners found some grip yesterday, Bracewell could enjoy bowling at Hagley Oval.
  • Tim Southee has an excellent record against Pakistan. The seamer has taken 24 wickets in just 14 matches at an average of 16.50 and strike rate of 14.0.
  • Trent Boult, on the other hand, has poor numbers against Pakistan (7 inns, 4 wickets, avg. 62.25, SR 40). But, he has the class and ability to turn this around.

Pakistan:

  • Mohammad Rizwan continues to amaze. He has made just one single digit score in 13 T20Is in 2022, with eight fifty-plus scores. This includes a match-winning 78* vs Bangladesh yesterday.
  • Babar Azam vs New Zealand: 7 inns, 244 runs, avg. 40.66, SR 118.44.
  • Shan Masood is also key at the top for Pakistan given their middle order worries. He has scored 1,212 runs in 33 T20 innings this year at a strike rate of 138.19 and average of 40.40.
  • Haris Rauf has taken an impressive nine wickets in just four T20Is vs New Zealand at an average of 14.88 and strike rate of 10.6. He has dismissed Martin Guptill twice in nine balls in T20Is.
  • Mohammad Nawaz enjoyed the conditions at Hagley Oval yesterday. He took 2/25.
  • Shadab Khan vs New Zealand: 10 matches, 9 wickets, avg. 28.33, econ. 6.89. He takes a wicket every 24.6 balls on average. But, he is one to watch given he found some spin yesterday.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-head: Matches 25, New Zealand 10, Pakistan 15.
  • New Zealand lead 7-5 against Pakistan at home.
  • Ish Sodhi vs Pakistan: 11 inns, 8 wickets, avg. 38.25, SR 28.5.
  • Kane Williamson has the third-most runs in NZ-PAK T20Is (439) at an average of 33.76 and strike rate of 114.62.
  • It may be worth Pakistan using Shadab Khan at number four. In 19 T20s batting at four, Shadab has scored 543 runs at an average of 28.58 and strike rate of 157.85.

Hagley Oval Christchurch Pitch Report and Weather

The players will have to deal with very cold conditions in this night game. A temperature of about 5 degrees is expected at night, with some cloud cover. No rain is forecast, though.

So, it remains to be seen whether there will be dew, because the captain who wins the toss may choose to bat. In the last 11 T20s on this ground dating back to the start of the Super Smash in December, the team batting first has won nine, including Pakistan yesterday. The average first innings score in these matches is 157.90.

NZ Tri-Series Match 2: NZ vs PAK Match Prediction – Who Will Win?

New Zealand start as favourites at home and should win, especially if they can pick up early wickets.

I idolised Rahul Dravid growing up – Teague Wyllie

Cricket News: I idolised Rahul Dravid growing up – Teague Wyllie | Young Australian Teague Wyllie talks about his batting

18-year old Western Australian batting sensation Teague Wyllie became the youngest player since Ricky Ponting in 1992/93 to hit a Sheffield Shield ton. His 104 off 204 balls against New South Wales was mighty impressive considering the low-scoring nature of the match, and also how the youngster went about accumulating his runs.

In the age of T20 cricket, Wyllie provides a bit of a throwback in terms of a focus on technique, patience and application. Also, his desire to stay focused on the job at hand, rather than celebrations, is a key feature of his attitude. Speaking to reporters after the match, Wyllie said that his father taught him the importance of going on with the job.

“My old boy drilled into me when you get a hundred that the job is not done. So I’ve never been a massive fan of carrying on, because I’m just trying to get the team into a good position.”

“A lot of the lads take the mickey out of me for not taking the helmet off but I just don’t like the attention from it.”

Western Australia captain Sam Whiteman echoed those words, telling ESPNcricinfo that Wyllie is an impressive young man who feels like he’s 28, rather than 18.

“He [Wyllie] said ‘tax accountants don’t celebrate when they do their tax return so I shouldn’t celebrate scoring a hundred'”, Whiteman said. “He loves batting and is an impressive young man. He feels like he’s 28.”

Rahul Dravid is the player I loved growing up – Teague Wyllie

In addition to his father, Wyllie said that Indian great Rahul Dravid had a big impact on how he has modelled his game. In terms of current players, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson is a player Wyllie admires.

“I idolised Rahul Dravid growing up,” Wyllie said. “He values his wicket more than anyone. Growing up I modelled my game on him a bit when it comes to valuing his wicket and batting for long periods. Kane Williamson is another who I try to learn a lot from.”

Cricket News: I idolised Rahul Dravid growing up - Teague Wyllie | Young Australian Teague Wyllie talks about his batting

I love batting and Test cricket is the goal – Wyllie

Cricketers around the world – both young and experienced – are plying their trades in T20 leagues whilst earning large amounts. However, Wyllie’s focus is playing Test cricket for Australia, driven by his desire to bat long.

“Test cricket is the goal and I believe it is the pinnacle when it comes to cricket,” the 18-year old said. “I’ve always loved batting for a long period of time.”

Given he is now more known in cricketing circles, Wyllie has even been warned by the likes of Shaun Marsh regarding the risks of social media. However, Wyllie says he loves cricket too much to get caught up in external noise.

“I’ve spoken to a few of the senior guys…they got rid of social media. I haven’t gotten to that stage.”

“I don’t go looking into social media comments because it’s just white noise and it doesn’t matter that much,” he said. “I tend to stay out of the spotlight. I love batting.”

Western Australia’s next match in the Sheffield Shield is against Victoria starting on October 17 at Junction Oval, Melbourne.

Goal is for SA20 to be 2nd biggest league after IPL: Graeme Smith

Cricket News: Goal is for SA20 to be 2nd biggest league after IPL: Graeme Smith | Graeme Smith sets lofty goal for SA20 League

Former South Africa captain and SA20 T20 League commissioner Graeme Smith has set a high goal for the competition. In an interview with timesnownews.com, Smith spoke about how the league, which has significant financial potential, will help South African cricket going forward.

However, Smith said that the importance of the tournament goes beyond just the revenue it generates, but how those funds are utilised. “It’s not only about revenue for us it’s about being able to build a sustainable product and invest back into the game in South Africa,” he said. “I think we have attracted the right type of partners for that. With six franchise owners, commercially, we are just beginning in the market place but I think there are a couple of key milestones that we have been able to achieve already.”

Aim for SA20 is to be the second biggest league behind the IPL – Graeme Smith

In the interview, Smith spoke of how South Africa can no longer rely on other nations for revenue and survival. Several cricketing nations now have established T20 Leagues, and with more on the horizon, much of the calendar will be taken up by different franchise tournaments.

“It was absolutely crucial [to have a T20 league of our own],” said the former Proteas’ captain. “We can’t rely on everybody else for the financial gain. I think that’s a very risky place to be in world cricket currently.”

“It’s well documented that everybody is kind of positioning themselves and making sure that they are taken well care of. South African cricket needed to do the same.”

Smith also spoke enthusiastically about the league’s potential given the partners it has been able to attract. Positioning the league as one that can sit second behind the IPL was key in attracting investments, and a number of IPL franchises have come on board.

“There are always butterflies in the stomach when you try to build something big”, he said. “When we started this process it was about figuring out how we can develop something that can become substantial, something that puts the 20-over domestic league in South Africa really on the map.”

“If we need to do it, we need to do it really well, position ourselves as the second-biggest league behind the IPL. We also wanted to attract investments and ownership that could help us build a sustainable product.”

Speaking of the IPL, Smith said that the tournament has set such a great standard that no league can match. However, tournaments like the SA20 league can take a leaf or two out of how the IPL has grown over the years.

“The IPL is an incredible tournament,” said Smith. “I think it set the standard for everybody else. I don’t think any league will get to the same level as IPL. We are looking to build something substantial in South Africa and aim to be just behind them is a huge goal because they have set the standard so high. What they have achieved is incredible.”

SA20 League to kick off on January 10, 2023

The inaugural season of the SA20 League will get underway on January 10. The tournament will run into February and consist of 33 matches. MI Cape Town, Durban Super Giants, Johannesburg Super Kings, Paarl Royals, Pretoria Capitals and Sunrisers Eastern Cape are the six teams vying for the coveted trophy.

BAN vs PAK Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report: NZ Tri-Series Match 1

Disclaimer: Links in this article are part of a sponsorship for the 2022 T20 World Cup where CricBlog has received a fee.

How good is a tri-series? In a cricketing world of T20 leagues and bilaterals, which continues the raging debate of the future of cricket, fans of the 1990s and 2000s in particular will feel a sense of nostalgia.

For Bangladesh and Pakistan, this Tri-Series serves as vital preparation ahead of the World Cup. Both have had their T20I struggles in recent times, with the Tigers overcoming UAE in unconvincing fashion after losing 2-1 in Zimbabwe. The men in green, who welcomed England for the first time since 2005, lost the series 4-3 in another example of how reliant they are on Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam.

Perhaps worryingly so close to a World Cup, both sides are still finding their best combinations. Bangladesh have now tried Mehidy Hasan Miraz and the recently recalled Sabbir Rahman at the top, while Pakistan’s middle order must start delivering. Also, some good outings for the bowlers will do confidence a world of good. Let’s see what this contest holds.

BAN vs PAK Possible Playing XI

Bangladesh national selector Habibul Bashar said that Shakib Al Hasan will likely bat at four. However, it remains to be seen if Shakib plays in this game after only just arriving to New Zealand from the CPL.

Bangladesh: 1. Mehidy Hasan Miraz, 2. Sabbir Rahman, 3. Litton Das, 4. Shakib Al Hasan (c), 5. Afif Hossain, 6. Mosaddek Hossain, 7. Nurul Hasan (wk), 8. Mohammad Saifuddin/Yasir Ali, 9. Nasum Ahmed, 10. Taskin Ahmed, 11. Mustafizur Rahman

The spotlight will be on Pakistan’s middle order after a disappointing series against England. Naseem Shah has been included in the squad for this series, but whether he features in this match after just recovering from illness remains to be seen. Also, Shaheen Shah Afridi is with the touring party, but he is reportedly unlikely to feature in this Tri-Series as he aims to fully recover from a knee injury for the World Cup.

Pakistan: 1. Mohammad Rizwan (wk), 2. Babar Azam (c), 3. Shan Masood, 4. Iftikhar Ahmed, 5. Khushdil Shah, 6. Asif Ali, 7. Shadab Khan, 8. Mohammad Nawaz, 9. Haris Rauf, 10. Mohammad Hasnain, 11. Naseem Shah/Mohammad Wasim

BAN vs PAK Head-to-Head Stats & Key Players

Bangladesh:

  • If available, Shakib Al Hasan will be vital, as always. The captain has scored the most runs in PAK-BAN T20Is (292) at an average of 41.71 and strike rate of 127.51.
  • Afif Hossain has scored the most runs for Bangladesh in T20Is this year (341), which included a match-saving 77* against UAE recently. He is averaging 37.88 with a strike rate of 128.67 in 2022.
  • Litton Das will also be key as a senior player. He is Bangladesh’s second-highest run-scorer this year with 275 at an average of 27.50 and strike rate of 138.19.
  • Mosaddek Hossain is striking at 142.85 in T20Is this year, which is the best strike rate among Bangladeshi batsmen who have faced at least 10 balls. Expect him to also play a role with the ball as he is the Tigers’ highest wicket-taker in 2022 (11) with an economy of 5.86 and strike rate of 11.7.
  • Taskin Ahmed has good numbers against Pakistan in T20Is. He has taken six wickets in as many matches at an economy of just 6.21.
  • Mustafizur Rahman has figures of 1/99 in 12 overs in T20s in New Zealand. The left-armer will be key up top in breaking the Rizwan-Babar partnership, as well as the death.

Pakistan:

  • The Mohammad Rizwan juggernaut rolls on. He has struck 1,441 runs in 32 T20s this year at an average of 57.64 and strike rate of 130.05. He will be the key wicket for Bangladesh up front.
  • Babar Azam hit 110* and 87* against England recently, but he hasn’t been at his consistent best since the start of the Asia Cup. Against Bangladesh, he has scored just 93 runs in five innings, with one score of 66*.
  • Shan Masood also had an up and down series against England. But, he has the form this year to make an impact. In 32 T20 innings in 2022, he has scored 1,181 runs at an average of 40.72 and strike rate of 137.97.
  • Can Asif Ali bounce back after a very poor series against England? Pakistan’s finishing option is averaging just 11.32 with a strike rate of 134.38 in 23 matches this year.
  • Shadab Khan’s all-round ability can be a big asset for Pakistan. Against Bangladesh, he has taken five wickets in four matches at an average of 19.20 and economy of 6.40.
  • With the bat this year, Shadab is striking at 148.44 in 24 innings. There is a case for Pakistan to bat him higher the order.
  • Haris Rauf has taken the most wickets for Pakistan in T20Is in 2022 (17). The pacer is taking a wicket every 16.6 deliveries, and he is particularly important in the death overs.
  • If fit, Naseem Shah will certainly be a threat to Bangladesh given how promising he looked in the Asia Cup. In all T20s this year, Naseem has taken 26 wickets in 19 matches at an economy of 8.22.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-head: Matches 15, Pakistan 13, Bangladesh 2.
  • Pakistan have won the last six T20Is against Bangladesh, including a 3-0 series win in November 2021.
  • Since the start of the 2021 T20 World Cup, Bangladesh have won just six of 22 completed T20Is. Only two of those have come against Test playing nations.

Hagley Oval Christchurch Pitch Report and Weather

Cricket is not often played in October in New Zealand, as conditions are still quite cold. A top of just 12 degrees is forecast for this afternoon match in Christchurch, but mostly clear conditions are expected.

In ten matches in the 2021/22 Super Smash at Christchurch, the average first innings score was 157. The team batting first won eight of those matches.

Indian broadcasters believe base price for SA20 League is too high

Cricket News: Indian broadcasters believe base price for SA20 League is too high | Base price for SA20 League considered too high

Several Indian broadcasting companies have officially expressed their disappointment to Cricket South Africa (CSA) over the high base price of the upcoming SA20 league. The CSA has fixed US$240,000, i.e. Rs 2 crore, as the reserve value for each game in the competition.

The bids will have to be placed for 10 years and there will be an incremental 5 per cent rise over in every campaign. The total base value for a season increases up to US $8 million, i.e. Rs 64 crore, and multiple domestic broadcasters believe it to be a high asking price.

In the Invitation To Tender (ITT), the CSA has called for bids for South Africa’s home international games for the Future Tours Program (FTP) from 2024-31.

Stars Sports, Sony, Viacom, Fancode among the broadcasters in the race to acquire SA20 League Media Rights

The base price for each India game and non-India season is US $7 million and US $3 million respectively. There is a contention over this issue as the board has been asked to unbundle the rights for the SA20 and South Africa’s international games by the prospective broadcasters. Star Sports, Sony, Viacom and Fancode are some of the companies in race to acquire the media rights for the SA20, Cricbuzz reports.

“The number of Teams will not increase in the first 5 (five) Seasons of the League, but may in subsequent Seasons. Subject to that, the number of Matches and the format of the League is not guaranteed and may increase, decrease and/or change in any Season and will be subject to change by ACD from time to time in its sole discretion,” the concerned ITT reads.

There will be 33 games in the first season and 34 matches in the following four years as per the concerned ITT.

This particular ITT is concerned around the India subcontinent region and 3rd October and 12th October are the respective deadlines for seeking clarifications and for the submission of bids. Ex-England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) chief executive Tom Harrison is overseeing the media rights sale as he has taken over the role of a commercial consultant to SA20.

Six franchises from the Indian Premier League (IPL), namely: Mumbai Indians (MI Cape Town), Chennai Super Kings (Johannesburg Super Kings), Lucknow Super Giants (Durban Super Giants), Delhi Capitals (Pretoria Capitals), SunRisers Hyderabad (Sunrisers Eastern Cape) and Rajasthan Royals (Paarl Royals) will be a part of the inaugural season of the brand-new SA20 set to be initiated early on next year.

IND vs SA 1st ODI Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report

If you needed a picture of what the cricketing world looks like, here is one. India will play an ODI on the same day their T20 World Cup squad flies to Australia in their quest for glory. Quite remarkable.

The ODI Super League, hampened by postponed matches due to COVID-19, has meant that one dayers such as this series has been crammed into an already packed schedule. South Africa currently sit 11th in the standings, and Temba Bavuma’s team need to view this series as an opportunity to make up ground. If they win 3-0, they will leapfrog West Indies into eighth place, but it is vital they focus on Lucknow first.

For the hosts India in particular, this three-match duel is a chance for those on the fringes to stake their claim once again. This is particularly the case for Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson, who, despite their potential, have fallen down the pecking order.

IND vs SA 1st ODI Possible Playing XI

Shikhar Dhawan will captain the team, with Shreyas Iyer named vice captain. Rajat Patidar, Mukesh Kumar and Shahbaz Ahmed were called up to the squad. Details here.

Expect Shahbaz Ahmed to play the role of left-arm spinning all-rounder at number seven. Ravi Bishnoi may win the wristspin position ahead of Kuldeep Yadav, unless India play two.

India: 1. Shikhar Dhawan (c), 2. Shubman Gill, 3. Rahul Tripathi/Ruturaj Gaikwad, 4. Ishan Kishan, 5. Shreyas Iyer, 6. Sanju Samson (wk), 7. Shahbaz Ahmed, 8. Shardul Thakur, 9. Deepak Chahar, 10. Ravi Bishnoi/Kuldeep Yadav, 11. Mohammed Siraj/Avesh Khan

South Africa will also have one eye on the T20 World Cup, but they could name a strong XI with ODI Super League points a must. However, they may look to rest the likes of Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje.

South Africa: 1. Quinton de Kock (wk), 2. Janneman Malan, 3. Temba Bavuma (c), 4. Aiden Markram, 5. Heinrich Klaasen, 6. David Miller, 7. Wayne Parnell, 8. Andile Phehlukwayo/Dwaine Pretorius, 9. Keshav Maharaj, 10. Lungi Ngidi, 11. Tabraiz Shamsi

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

India:

  • Watch out for Shubman Gill. The classy right-hander has made a great start to his ODI career, with 499 runs in nine matches at an average of 71.28 and strike rate of 105.27.
  • Also, Gill struck scores of 92, 22, 11 and 119 in County cricket last month.
  • Shikhar Dhawan has a terrific ODI record vs South Africa. The left-hander has struck nine 50+ scores in 20 innings, including three hundreds. Overall numbers: 20 inns, 967 runs, avg. 50.89, SR 94.80.
  • Ishan Kishan will be after a big series. He struck 50 in his last knock, against Zimbabwe in August. Also, despite his average of 28.80 after five ODI knocks so far, he does have two fifties to his name.
  • Sanju Samson is striking at 101.14 in his short ODI career so far, so he could play a key role as finisher. The keeper-batsman recently struck scores of 29*, 37 and 54 for India A against New Zealand A.
  • Kuldeep Yadav took seven wickets in three matches for India A against New Zealand A last month. He conceded just 4.08 per over and averaged 14.57 runs per wicket. Also, Kuldeep has taken 18 wickets in just seven ODIs vs South Africa (avg. 15.66).
  • If picked, Deepak Chahar will be key against the SA top order. He dismissed Temba Bavuma twice in the recent T20I series. Also, Chahar provides batting depth – he smashed 54 off 34 balls in his last ODI innings vs South Africa.

South Africa:

  • Quinton de Kock vs India in ODIs: 16 inns, 1,013 runs, avg. 53.31, SR 92.59. This includes an incredible six centuries.
  • Can Temba Bavuma find some form in ODIs? He scored a century against India back in January. Also, he averages 45.12 after 19 ODIs, so he is far more comfortable in this format.
  • Aiden Markram (183 runs, avg. 22.87) and David Miller (373 runs, avg. 21.94) will both be looking to improve their ODI records against India. Miller recently struck a memorable century in the T20Is.
  • Lungi Ngidi has taken 13 wickets in seven ODIs vs India. He is a contender for wickets in this match, particularly at the death with his slower balls into the wicket.
  • Andile Phehlukwayo took the most wickets in the SA-IND ODI series earlier this year (6) at an average of 18.33 and economy of 5.50. Tabraiz Shamsi took four wickets in two matches in that same series.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-head: Matches 87, India 35, South Africa 49, N/R 3.
  • South Africa beat India 3-0 in South Africa back in January.
  • India have played 13 ODIs this year, winning nine of them. South Africa have won five of their eight completed matches.

Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium Lucknow Pitch Report and Weather

This will be the fourth ODI at Lucknow. The previous three were between West Indies and Afghanistan in 2019, where spinners played a key role. The average first innings score in that series was 230, and a slowish wicket may await the players in this match.

Humid conditions are forecast with a chance of thunderstorms right throughout the day and evening. So, expect the captain who wins the toss to choose to chase.

“Didn’t know game was on” – Disappointing crowd for AUS vs WI 1st T20

Cricket News: “Where is everyone?” – Disappointing crowd for AUS vs WI 1st T20 | Reactions to the low crowd in AUS vs WI 1st T20 at Carrara

T20 World Cup fever is heating up around the cricketing world, but that wasn’t exactly the case in Australia’s first home T20I of the season against West Indies in Gold Coast. Sights of the red seats dominated the coverage, providing a reminder of how cricket was played behind closed doors for a while due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It would have been unrealistic to expect a huge crowd for a mid-week T20I against opposition who need to qualify for the main round of the World Cup, but the number of empty seats is still a disappointing sight ahead of such a big and exciting season. The Gold Coast isn’t exactly the city where locals flock in to watch live sport, but the lack of marketing and awareness, confirmed by fans, has contributed to the low crowd.

Fans react to low crowd at Gold Coast for AUS vs WI 1st T20

One tweet read “The Gold Coast is a dead spot for sport. Throw in the very little promotion to stick the boot in and this is your result.” Another tweet in the same thread held similar views, reading “I’m like an hour and a bit away from the Gold Coast in Brisbane and I didn’t even know the game was on until this morning. There’s been no ads that I’ve seen.”

It is estimated that about 5,000 fans turned up for the match.

“Why’s the whole crowd dressed in red”, read a tweet. “Must be 150 fans”, read another.

Australia eventually prevailed with one ball to spare courtesy mainly of Matthew Wade and Aaron Finch. However, the hosts were lucky to come away with the win, with two dropped catches in the final over costing the Windies victory.

Who will replace Jasprit Bumrah in India’s T20 World Cup squad?

Cricket News: Who will replace Jasprit Bumrah in the India T20 World Cup squad? | Rahul Dravid drops hint on Bumrah’s WC replacement

Skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid have together indicated that Mohammed Shami might replace Jasprit Bumrah in India’s final squad for the T20 World Cup. Bumrah’s back injury ruled him out of the upcoming tournament and that has put all the focus on his substitution in the final roster.

Shami and Deepak Chahar are named amongst the standby players for the World Cup. However, the former tested positive for Covid-19 prior to India’s recent series against Australia and South Africa. That hampered his chances of getting any game-time in the T20 format before the team flies off to Australia. Currently, Shami is getting his fitness assessed at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.

Shami is on standby to replace Bumrah – Dravid

“In terms of who the replacement is, we’ll have a look, we’ll see, we’ve got time till October 15th. Shami obviously is someone who’s in the standbys, but unfortunately for us, he couldn’t play this series, which would have been ideal from that perspective,” Dravid was quoted in the post-match press conference after India’s loss in the third T20I vs South Africa on Tuesday.

He added, “He’s in the NCA at the moment – we’ll have to get reports as to how he’s recovering, and what’s his status after 14-15 days of Covid, and we’ll take a call, once I get reports on how he’s feeling, then we can take a call and the selectors can take a call on how we move forward on it.”

Speaking on the same issue, Rohit explained that prior experience in Australian conditions will play a part in finalising Bumrah’s replacement. “We’ve got to get someone in who’s got experience, who’s bowled in Australia, and see what he has to offer. I don’t know who that guy is yet. There are a few guys in the reckoning for that, but we’ll make that call once we reach Australia,” the captain remarked, indicating that Shami could be the preferred choice of the team management.

India will be lacking a genuine pacer having the capability to operate well right throughout the innings in Bumrah’s absence. Shami comes across as a fine replacement in that regard though he hasn’t turned up for India in a T20I ever since the T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) last year. India’s death-bowling woes have been exposed recently with Bumrah being side-lined but whether or not Shami will be able to fill that gaping hole appropriately remains to be seen.
