SL vs PAK Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report: Asia Cup 2022 Final | PAK vs SL Dream11 Prediction Today | Dubai Pitch Report

Two weeks ago, Sri Lanka were embarrassed on the opening night of the 2022 Asia Cup. They were rolled for 105 against Afghanistan in a batting performance deemed unacceptable by skipper Dasun Shanaka, and faced a do-or-die clash against Bangladesh a few days later. Fast forward to September 11, and the Lions now have the opportunity to lift the Asia Cup for the first time since 2014 courtesy of four successful run chases, including three over 170.

For Pakistan, it’s their chance to win their first Asia Cup crown since 2012. That night, they held their nerve to win a classic by two runs against Bangladesh in Dhaka, and one feels they will need similar composure against a Sri Lanka side playing with great confidence. Granted, the loss to the Lions a couple of nights ago shouldn’t hurt their confidence given nothing was at stake, but they can take some learnings from the defeat.

Ultimately, there will be a lot of attention on the toss. Chasing teams have dominated once again in the UAE, which puts onus on the team batting first to aim for the sky. However, a score of 185+ may be difficult to achieve if the Dubai surface is as tricky as it was a couple of nights ago, one of the various narratives that should make for a cracking battle.

SL vs PAK Possible Playing XI

Sri Lanka could go with an unchanged team for this clash.

Sri Lanka: 1. Kusal Mendis (wk), 2. Pathum Nissanka, 3. Dhananjaya de Silva, 4. Danushka Gunathilaka, 5. Dasun Shanaka (c), 6. Bhanuka Rajapaksa, 7. Chamika Karunaratne, 8. Wanindu Hasaranga, 9. Maheesh Theekshana, 10. Pramod Madushan, 11. Dilshan Madushanka

Expect Pakistan to be at full strength after resting players in the Super 4 match against Sri Lanka.

Pakistan: 1. Babar Azam (c), 2. Mohammad Rizwan (wk), 3. Fakhar Zaman, 4. Iftikhar Ahmed, 5. Khushdil Shah, 6. Shadab Khan, 7. Asif Ali, 8. Mohammad Nawaz, 9. Naseem Shah, 10. Haris Rauf, 11. Mohammad Hasnain

SL vs PAK Head-to-Head Stats & Key Players

Sri Lanka:

  • Wanindu Hasaranga was player of the match two nights ago (3/21). The legspinner now has an incredible 11 wickets in four matches against Pakistan at an average of 9.09 and economy of 6.25.
  • Kusal Mendis has the second-best strike rate of any player with at least 150 runs in this Asia Cup (158.16). Also, he strikes at over 140 as an opener in T20Is, with an average of 33.44.
  • Pathum Nissanka is Sri Lanka’s leading run scorer in the 2022 Asia Cup (165) at an average of 41.25 and strike rate of 118.70. The opener held his nerve to finish with a 48-ball 55* two nights ago against Pakistan.
  • Speaking of strike rates, Bhanuka Rajapaksa is a player who can take down Pakistan’s spinners who will predominantly turn the ball into him. The left-hander has scored 136 runs in four innings against Pakistan at an average of 34.00 and strike rate of 140.20.
  • Dilshan Madushanka is Sri Lanka’s equal-highest wicket-taker in this tournament (6). His battle against Babar Azam will be crucial given the struggles that Pakistan’s captain has had in this campaign.

Pakistan:

  • Speaking of Babar Azam, not only has he had a poor Asia Cup campaign (63 runs), but he has poor numbers against Sri Lanka: 7 inns, 109 runs, avg. 18.16, SR 89.34. Will his class shine through today?
  • Mohammad Rizwan has had another prolific T20 tournament. The keeper-batsman has the second-most runs in this Asia Cup (226) at an average of 56.50 and strike rate of 118.94.
  • Mohammad Nawaz has had a tournament to remember. Expect the all-rounder to be used a pinch hitter in this game as he has a strike rate of 158.69 in this campaign. Also, he has taken the second-most wickets of any bowler (8) at an economy of just 6.05.
  • Shadab Khan has never taken more than one wicket in a T20I vs Sri Lanka. Overall, he has figures of 4/164 in six matches against the Lions at an average of 41.00 and strike rate of 31.5. But, he is in good form and took four wickets in last year’s T20 World Cup knockout against Australia on this ground.
  • Naseem Shah can also influence this game. The seamer, who was rested for the last match, has taken six wickets in this tournament at an economy of 7.00. His confidence will be sky high after hitting two memorable sixes against Afghanistan.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-head: Matches 22, Pakistan 13, Sri Lanka 9.
  • Sri Lanka have won their past four T20Is against Pakistan.
  • Fakhar Zaman vs Sri Lanka in T20Is: 6 inns, 67 runs, avg. 11.16, SR 95.71.

Dubai International Stadium Pitch Report and Weather

The team batting first has won just two out of eight matches at Dubai in this Asia Cup. In the last two games, India scored 212 and then Pakistan caused Sri Lanka a hiccup in pursuit of 121. In the pressure of a Final, a score of 185+ gives the team batting first a better chance.

A warm night is forecast, as is always the case in Dubai at this time of year.

Why isn’t Aiden Markram recognising his Test potential?

Why isn’t Aiden Markram recognising his Test potential? | A look at why Aiden Markram continues to struggle in Test cricket for South Africa

When Aiden Markram first burst onto the scene, Proteas’ fans said a quiet word of thanks that the country’s prayers of finding a player worthy of South Africa’s great teams seemed to be answered. Indeed, the swashbuckling right-hander had an array of shots and the timing to match. In reality, it seemed for all the money in the world that Markram would enjoy an illustrious career.

Five years from his Proteas debut and Markram is at a career-defining crossroads given that his batting averages are far below where a player of his class should be. The one exception would be Markram’s performance in the T20 arena where he currently averages 42.47.

Aiden Markram is averaging under 25 in Tests since the start of 2021

Nonetheless, Markram will be on the plane to Australia but there is less certainty about how many flights he will board in the future when the Proteas depart to play Test cricket around the world.

Chiefly, this comes down to the batsman’s Test average of 34.05 which is, in short, not good enough. Worse, the average drops to just 24.6 since the start of 2021. Ultimately, players representing South Africa who come in to bat at number four need to be averaging above 40 at the bare minimum.

Right now, it doesn’t feel like Markram has the stomach for the battle which is undoubtedly contributing to his cheap dismissals, and led to him being dropped for the third Test against England. To a certain extent, we’ve seen a similar situation unfold in the South Africa and England series with Zak Crawley, whose decision-making with bat in hand whilst under pressure, points toward a player who wants to be taken out of the firing line. Indeed, there were shades of Crawley’s indecision in Markram’s wicket in the second Test when he immediately took on a short ball from Ben Stokes and was subsequently caught behind early on in his innings.

In essence, the shot that Markram played was the last thing that the Proteas’ precarious situation required which again, reveals that this is a man who wants to do anything but bat for South Africa in Tests at the moment. Going back to matches over the past two years, Markram would often look in good touch, but throw his wicket away with a loose shot. Now, the pressure seems to have become too much, and time in the middle in domestic cricket is best for his game.

This is why Test cricket is referred to as the ultimate format as every run has to be earned and against the top nations, no inch will be surrendered.

Yes, it can be an unforgiving and merciless format that will ask tough questions of not only a batsmen’s technique but also their stomach for the fight in the relentless heat of battle. As things stand, Markram looks ready to step aside and let someone else take his place in the trenches.

Aaron Finch retires from ODIs: “Time to give new leader a chance”

Cricket News: Aaron Finch retires from ODIs: “Time to give new leader a chance” | Aaron Finch retires from ODI cricket, will continue as T20I captain

Australia captain Aaron Finch has announced his retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs). Announcing the news on Saturday morning, Finch said it was the right time to step aside and give a new captain a chance to settle in ahead of next year’s World Cup.

The veteran of 145 ODIs has enjoyed a fine career in the format, but has endured a very difficult period. In five ODIs this season against Zimbabwe and New Zealand, Finch made a total of 26 runs, further increasing the spotlight on his role in the team. In the end, he made the call.

“It has been a fantastic ride with some incredible memories,” Finch said. “I have been extremely fortunate to be a part of some brilliant one-day sides. Equally, I have been blessed by all those I have played with and the many people behind the scenes.

“It is time now to give a new leader the best possible opportunity to prepare for and win the next World Cup. I thank all of those who have helped and supported my journey to this point,” he said.

Finch retires from ODIs: “Never my style to be self-indulgent”

Finch revealed that he contemplated finishing his ODI career against England after the T20 World Cup. The third match of that series is scheduled at the MCG, Finch’s home ground, which could have made for a fairytale finish. However, the opener said that it is not his style to think of himself only, but rather allow his replacements enough time to make an impact in the format.

“I could have tried to play the series against England, and that would have been a bit of a fairytale finishing at the MCG, but I think that’s never been my style to be self-indulgent in any way,” he said.

“So it’s important that whoever takes over the captaincy, and whoever opens the batting, is given the best opportunity to take take the team forward and win the World Cup in 2023. I’m very comfortable and confident I would never have made it that far, just with my body as well as a bit of form.”

Finch will continue as T20I captain

Australia will begin their T20 World Cup defence next month against New Zealand. Finch will be leading in that tournament, and will be keen to make runs in T20Is against India, England and West Indies before the showpiece event.

The opener has been in better T20 form this year, with scores of 55, 61*, 24 and 29 in his past four matches. In trying to explain why there has been such a difference in his returns in the two white-ball formats, Finch said that intent is likely to be the difference.

“I think my T20 form has been pretty good for a little while now, [it’s a] totally different format, but I’m really comfortable that I’m still playing well, just haven’t got as many runs in this format,” he said. “Don’t know what the difference is, maybe a bit of intent, a bit of risk-taking that you get away with in T20 cricket.”

Finch has committed to the Melbourne Renegades for this season’s Big Bash League, and will assess his career after that tournament. For now, he will play his 146th and final ODI against New Zealand on Sunday that brings an end to a career that has yielded 5,401 runs and 17 hundreds. Only Ricky Ponting (29), David Warner (18) and Mark Waugh (18) have scored more ODI centuries for Australia.

JAM vs TKR Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report: CPL 2022 Match 12

JAM vs TKR Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report: CPL 2022 Match 12 | JAM vs TKR Dream11 Prediction Today | St Lucia Pitch Report

As we edge closer towards the halfway mark of CPL 2022, Jamaica Tallawahs and Trinbago Knight Riders will do battle in an important clash. Conditions will be warm, and the heat will certainly be on the players to deliver as the race for the final four begins to take shape.

The Knight Riders, arguably favourites heading into the competition given their remarkable depth on paper, have not got going yet. The weather has had a say in that, with a wash out and rain-affected 80-run defeat to Barbados earlier in the week. Given conditions should be good for cricket today, Kieron Pollard’s team will be looking to create some momentum, particularly with regards to their net run rate which stands at an ugly -2.505.

Jamaica, on the other hand, have been solid. The Tallawahs, who lost Andre Russell to today’s opponents, will be motivated to build on their 2-1 start to the season and rebound after a tight defeat in a thriller against St Lucia three days ago. Raymon Reifer made an excellent start to his campaign, but more will be asked of the top order after a poor outing against the Kings. Also, if Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim continue their strong bowling form, the Tallawahs will be tough to beat.

JAM vs TKR Possible Playing XI

Jamaica Tallawahs: 1. Brandon King, 2. Kennar Lewis (wk), 3. Shamarh Brooks, 4. Rovman Powell (c), 5. Fabian Allen, 6. Imad Wasim, 7. Raymon Reifer, 8. Chris Green, 9. Joshua James/Nicholson Gordon, 10. Mohammad Amir, 11. Miguel Pretorius

Akeal Hosein is unlikely to be fit in time for this match as he recovers from a groin strain.

Trinbago Knight Riders: 1. Sunil Narine, 2. Tion Webster, 3. Colin Munro, 4. Nicholas Pooran, 5. Tim Seifert (wk), 6. Andre Russell, 7. Kieron Pollard (c), 8. Terrence Hinds/Jayden Seales, 9. Anderson Phillip, 10. Khary Pierre, 11. Ravi Rampaul

JAM vs TKR Head-to-Head Stats & Key Players

Jamaica Tallawahs:

  • Brandon King has a poor record against TKR: 12 inns, 168 runs, avg. 15.27, SR 111.26. Both Khary Pierre (26 balls) and Ravi Rampaul (three balls) have dismissed King once in T20 cricket. But, he is in good touch at the moment.
  • Rovman Powell is Jamaica’s second-highest run-scorer so far this season. The captain has struck 81 runs at a strike rate of 128.57, with just one dismissal to date. This includes two fours and eight sixes.
  • However, like King, Powell has often struggled against TKR. Since 2016, he has scored just 180 runs at an average of 16.36 and strike rate of 103.45.
  • Mohammad Amir continues to produce the goods in the CPL. The left-armer took 3/25 against St Lucia, with two coming in the powerplay. So far, he is the second-highest wicket-taker in CPL 2022, with seven at an average of 10.00 and economy of 5.83.
  • Imad Wasim also had a good outing last game with 2/15. Given TKR have a number of left-handers in their top four, Jamaica could look to keep Wasim for the slog overs against TKR’s big hitters.
  • In fact, Wasim has Pollard’s number. In all T20s, Wasim has dismissed Pollard three times in 35 balls, whilst conceding just 20.

Trinbago Knight Riders:

  • Sunil Narine has an excellent record against Brandon King in T20s. The spinner has dismissed the opener twice in 29 balls, conceding just 17 in the process.
  • Since 2016, Narine has taken 14 wickets in as many matches against Jamaica at an economy of just 6.07. Also, his 197 runs come at a strike rate of 157.60.
  • Colin Munro has outstanding numbers against Jamaica: 12 inns, 563 runs, avg. 56.30, SR 136.32.
  • Nicholas Pooran averages just 19.08 in 15 innings vs Tallawahs. However, he does fare better in T20s on this ground: 10 inns, 212 runs, avg. 26.50, SR 142.28.
  • Andre Russell will come up against his former team today. On this ground, Russell has slammed 199 runs in 11 innings at an average of 33.17 and strike rate of 203.06. Also, he has taken 14 wickets in 13 matches at a strike rate of 16.14.
  • Ravi Rampaul bowled well against Jamaica last season. The seamer took figures of 2/26 and 2/32.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-head: Matches 21, Jamaica 9, Trinbago 12.
  • TKR have won the last eight meetings between the teams.
  • Imad Wasim vs TKR: 8 inns, 10 wickets, avg. 14.70, econ. 5.44.
  • Tion Webster is TKR’s leading run-scorer so far this season with 65 in two innings. This includes a score of 58.
  • Chris Green’s economy rate of 4.54 is easily the best among bowlers who have bowled at least ten overs in CPL 2022.
  • Kieron Pollard has an incredible record on this ground: 14 inns, 542 runs, avg. 77.42, SR 176.55. Also, he has not been dismissed against Jamaica in six innings since the start of 2019 (162 runs, SR 197.56).

Darren Sammy International Stadium Gros Islet St Lucia Pitch Report and Weather

A warm day is forecast, with a top of about 32 degrees. There is some cloud cover expected at times, which may aid some early swing for the seamers.

In four games on this ground so far in CPL 2022, the average first innings score is 172. This includes three totals in the 160s in the last three games. The chasing team won all of the previous three matches.

Why is Sandeep Lamichhane suspended by Cricket Association of Nepal?

Cricket News: Why did Cricket Association of Nepal suspend captain Sandeep Lamichhane? | Sandeep Lamichhane suspended by Nepal Cricket

The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has suspended skipper Sandeep Lamichhane after an arrest warrant was issued against him in Kathmandu regarding an alleged case of coercion of another individual.

The leg-spinner was a part of the Jamaica Tallawahs in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) at the time of the incident. The franchise announced on Thursday that he will be leaving the tournament with immediate effect, ESPNcricinfo reports.

Prashant Vikram Malla, acting secretary of the CAN, confirmed that Lamichhane’s suspension will stand pending a thorough investigation. The CAN board conducted a meeting before taking this decision. Lamichhane has also been summoned to report to the police in Kathmandu.

Sandeep Lamichhane states his innocence

“I am INNOCENT and keep complete belief in the respectable laws of Nepal. I have decided to take a leave from CPL and go back to my country within few days. I am ready to face all these baseless allegations,” Lamichhane’s official statement regarding this issue read.

He added, “May justice be served to the innocent and right investigation to be done to everyone involved. Hope the law acts equal to everyone.”

Lamichhane has played in several major T20 franchise competitions such as the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Big Bash League (BBL), the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), the Lanka Premier League and the CPL. Back in 2018, he became the first Nepalese player to be picked in the IPL as the Delhi Daredevils (now, Delhi Capitals) acquired him for a sum of Rs 20 lakhs in the mega-auction.

Lamichhane has featured in 70 international matches, including 30 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 40 T20Is. He has taken an impressive 147 wickets and three five-wicket hauls across the two formats.

The 22-year-old is the second-fastest and the third-fastest to reach the milestone of 50 wickets in ODIs and T20Is respectively. Further details of this case will most likely unfold in the coming days.

Twitter reactions to Virat Kohli finally reaching his 71st century

Cricket News: Twitter reactions to Virat Kohli finally reaching his 71st century | Virat Kohli 71st century reactions: fans, players, pundits praise the star player

Indian stalwart Virat Kohli finally notched his 71st international century after a nearly three-year wait since his last ton. The former skipper scored 122 runs off 61 deliveries against Afghanistan in the Dubai International Stadium on Thursday.

Opening the batting in the absence of Rohit Sharma, Kohli remained unbeaten in a knock that brought a sigh of relief to millions of fans of the Indian cricket team.

The 34-year-old has appeared to be in good touch throughout the Asia Cup but he finally broke from his shackles to bag 12 boundaries and six sixes in an innings laden with flair and flamboyance.

The cricketing world reacted vehemently to Kohli’s knock as several stars, ex-players and noted personalities showered praise on him for finally reaching his much-awaited milestone.

Reactions to Virat Kohli finally bringing up the 71st century

CricBlog brings to you some of the top reactions on the occasion on Twitter.

Current and former Pakistan players also praise Virat Kohli on notching up 71st ton

There was a lot of talk about Kohli getting back into his groove prior to the Asia Cup. He had drawn support from several Pakistani cricketers with Babar Azam even putting out a tweet regarding the same last month. Quite a few players from across the border yet again put out their tweets of assurance and appreciation as soon as Kohli brought up his century against the Afghans.

Overall, India capped off a convincing 101-run victory in their final game of the tournament. The Indian team has endured a disappointing campaign and were knocked out of the competition owing to their consecutive losses in the Super-4 stage.

However, Kohli’s form was a major talking point heading into the Asia Cup and the management can take solace from those concerns being answers over the course of the last five games. Under-fire pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar too delivered excellent figures of 4-1-4-5 as he helped wipe off the Afghan batting line-up to secure a consolation victory for the team.

What does the future of cricket look like according to fans?

The future of cricket is one of the hottest topics in the game right now. Amplified by the rise of T20 leagues, international retirements and crammed scheduling, conversations around cricket’s future are almost impossible to miss.

To get a feel of what fans believe the future looks like, CricBlog ran a poll focusing on cricket’s current landscape plus what the game will look like in 15 years, including leagues, Olympics and Test cricket.

Cricket News: What does the future of cricket look like according to fans? | Looking at the future of cricket: How it's changed and where it's heading

Future of cricket: Where do fans see the game in the next 10-15 years?

Out of over 4,700 respondents, 37.4% believed that cricket will be a regular feature in the Olympic games. This is the case for 2028 in Los Angeles, and the hope is that cricket continues to be a part of the Olympics.

44% of respondents expect women’s cricket to go from strength to strength. The Women’s IPL kicked off in 2023, and will see the game flourish even more as the best cricketers from India and around the world compete. Also, with the WBBL achieving record numbers in 2021, fans expect to see more women’s leagues around the world.

Speaking of the IPL, a huge 65% of respondents believe that T20 leagues, including the IPL, will take up 6-9 months in the calendar within the next 10-15 years. In 2022, former India coach Ravi Shastri said that such an event is inevitable given the league’s financial might, highlighted by the mammoth broadcast rights which put the IPL behind only the NFL in terms of value per match.

Also, 75% of respondents believe that IPL franchise owners can hold more power than cricket boards in the future. In April 2023, a report suggested that such owners have approached England players to offer lucrative T20 contracts for millions of pounds per year, making franchises the players’ employer rather than boards or county. Plus, Cricket South Africa is set to take a weakened Test squad to New Zealand as the SA 20 is prioritised given the investment in the league from IPL franchise owners.

Future of Test cricket safe for now in the eyes of the fans

A huge 89.3% of respondents said that Test cricket will still be alive in 2038. The game’s most traditional format, which has delivered endless memories over the years, is also at a crossroads given the rise of domestic leagues around the world. However, fans believe the format still has a place as it is the ultimate test of skill and can balance out the incredible pace at which white-ball cricket moves.

But, Tests are expensive to host for boards around the world. Whether they are financially feasible enough for nations other than England, Australia and India remains to be seen. Perhaps there is a need for the ICC to step in and make Test cricket as accessible as possible for fans. In fact, a number of respondents said there must be a more equal distribution of funds to ensure Tests are financially feasible for nations. Other respondents called for more day/night Tests, more affordable tickets, a reduction in T20Is and better marketing.

Some key Test cricket findings:

  • 46.12% of respondents called for the away team to make a decision to bat or bowl first.
  • 25.11% said less white-ball bilaterals will allow for more build up to and excitement for Tests.
  • 17.36% are in support of four-day Tests.

Will ODI cricket survive the next 10-15 years?

Also 65% of respondents believe that the IPL and T20 leagues will take up 6-9 months of the year. As a result, such a crammed calendar leaves international cricket in a vulnerable place. A number of players, including Usman Khawaja, Moeen Ali and Ravichandran Ashwin, have spoken of the threat facing One Day Internationals (ODIs).

A number of players have retired from ODIs and many others skip series which has prompted even greater discussion as to how ODIs fit in the calendar going forward. While there are plenty of one dayers scheduled in the 2023-27 FTP, 31.9% of respondents believe there will be no more ODIs in the next 10-15 years.

Also, 49.1% of respondents said ODI cricket should go if they had to drop a format to reduce pressure on scheduling, compared to 42.2% for T20Is and just 8.7% for Tests.

Some key ODI cricket findings:

  • 58.47% of respondents said that limiting the number of T20 Internationals will revitalise ODI cricket.
  • 38.76% said there needs to be more set windows for ODIs throughout the year.
  • 36.85% called for more sporting wickets that seam and spin.
  • 29.92% believe only one ball should be used rather than one from each end.

Welcome back, Barbados Royals. After two lean seasons after their triumph in 2019, the Royals have won three from three, led by the all-round brilliance of Kyle Mayers. Also, skipper David Miller’s excellent year is continuing, making for a top order to die for alongside Quinton de Kock. Trinbago Knight Riders were the team to feel the heat most recently, conceding 194/4 with the top three scoring 156 on their own.

St Lucia Kings, who went down to Barbados earlier this year, need a win to solidify their position in the top four. In that game, they crumbled to Mayers, with Faf du Plessis (47* off 20) and Alzarri Joseph (29* off 18) turning things around to eventually just fall short by 11 runs on the Duckworth/Lewis method.

SLK vs BR Possible Playing XI

St Lucia Kings: 1. Johnson Charles, 2. Niroshan Dickwella (wk), 3. Faf du Plessis (c), 4. Ackeem Auguste, 5. Roston Chase, 6. Tim David, 7. Roshon Primus, 8. David Wiese, 9. Alzarri Joseph, 10. Scott Kuggeleijn, 11. Jeavor Royal

Shami sitting at home baffles me – Ravi Shastri

Cricket News: Shami sitting at home baffles me – Ravi Shastri | Shastri says India should pick Mohammed Shami in T20I squad

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has expressed bafflement at Mohammed Shami’s exclusion from the Indian T20I squad. Shastri claimed that the side needed an additional element amongst the pacers amidst the prevalent playing conditions in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The Rohit Sharma-led side headed into the Asia Cup with three frontline pacers in Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Avesh Khan and Arshdeep Singh. Hardik Pandya has been slotted in as the third or fourth-choice fast-bowler according to the team combination. However, Avesh’s illness meant that Hardik has had to come in as the third pacer for the majority of the competition.

The management had the choice of calling in Deepak Chahar as Avesh’s replacement given that the former has been training with the squad. However, they opted to wait for the Lucknow Super Giant (LSG) pacer to recover. Shastri has hit hard on the think-tank for ignoring Shami as he said, “When you need to win, you got to prepare better. I think the selection could have been better, especially for the fast bowlers. You know the conditions here. There’s not much in it for the spinners. I was quite surprised that you came here with just four fast bowlers [including Hardik].”

I’m seeing something different for Shami to be ignored – Shastri

He added, “You needed that extra one… Someone like Mohammed Shami sitting at home and cooling his heels baffles me. After the IPL he had, for him not to be able to make the cut is… Obviously, I’m seeing something different.”

Shami has not been involved in the team’s scheme of things in the T20I format ever since last year’s World T20. He was the leading wicket-taker (20) for champions Gujarat Titans in the previous edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, Shami’s economy in the powerplay (6.62) was a stark contrast to the same in death overs (9.63). India’s issues in the last two games have mainly been concerned around a lack of incisiveness towards the fag end of the innings. Yet, Shastri was adamant that Shami’s presence could have worked in India’s favour as well.

“No one ever wishes to sit out. Of course, there is something called workload management. I would agree with it, to an extent, but at times I think there are some minus points in it as well. I feel that at times when you are in good form and in great rhythm, you shouldn’t stop playing. Of course, at times, I feel, for the sake of recovery, you need to take a break. You have to do it smartly,” the former head-coach explained, as reported by ESPNCricinfo.

India could have gone with an extra pacer in the squad

India has four spinners in the squad of 15, namely: Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja/Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi and Yuzvendra Chahal. Shastri believes that they could have gone with an extra pacer in place of one of these spinners. “You don’t want to be caught in a situation where one guy has a fever and then you have no one else to play. You have to play another spinner, which can be embarrassing in the end,” the former head coach further added.

India will now be facing Afghanistan for their final Super-4 encounter, which will be a virtual dead rubber, on Thursday. The Rohit Sharma-led side will be playing six T20Is, including three apiece vs Australia and South Africa, before kicking off their T20 World Cup campaign against Pakistan on 23rd October in the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

Pakistan triumphed over Afghanistan in an absolute nail-biter in their Super-4 tie in the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.

The Afghan bowlers made life difficult for the opposition despite only defending a modest target of 130 runs. It required two sixes in the 20th over by young pacer Naseem Shah to help Babar Azam’s men seal the game. Fazalhaq Farooqi and Fareed Ahmed struck three wickets each whereas Rashid returned with a couple of scalps to his name.

Shadab Khan and Iftikhar Ahmed top-scored for Babar Azam’s men with 36 and 30 runs respectively. Pakistan’s victory has effectively put India out of the competition. The viewers arguably seemed to enjoy the close contest between the arch-rivals. Many of them expressed their views on Twitter post the match.

Tensions boil over in Afghanistan vs Pakistan clash

There was also physical altercation between Asif Ali and Fareed Ahmed in the penultimate over of the game. Ahmed’s send-off after dismissing Asif took an ugly turn as the batsman appeared to be pushing the pacer back. He even raised his bat in an indication of actually hitting the Afghan bowler as tensions rose with the game hanging in fine balance at that point in time.

Accordingly, the final of the Asia Cup will now be contested between Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the Dubai International Stadium on 11th September. India and Afghanistan will be facing off for their Super-4 match on Thursday evening.

Meanwhile, both Dasun Shanaka and Babar’s men are on a roll right now as an exciting conclusion awaits to this closely-contested edition of the Asia Cup.
