Which bowler has the most wickets after three Tests?

Cricket News: Which bowler has the most wickets after three Tests? | List of bowlers with the most wickets after three Tests

Sri Lanka’s Prabath Jayasuriya has made quite the start to his Test career, so much so that he is among the highest wicket-takers after three Tests in the history of the game.

Jayasuriya, who took the best figures on debut for Sri Lanka, has played key roles in Sri Lanka’s wins over the Aussies and Pakistan in Galle. In the process, he took a remarkable 29 wickets, which is the equal-second most by any player after three matches.

Most wickets after three Tests

Here is the list of the bowlers with the most wickets after three games.

31, Narendra Hirwani, India

Hirwani holds the record for the most wickets after three Tests (31). The legspinner took 16 of them in an incredible debut match against West Indies in Chennai in 1988, before taking eight and seven wickets against New Zealand at Bengaluru and Mumbai respectively.

29, Charlie Turner, Australia

Australia legend Charlie Turner was the original record holder for the most wickets after three Tests. The pacer, who made his debut in 1887 against England, took 29 wickets in his first three games at an extraordinary average of 11.69. He went on to finish with 101 wickets in 17 Tests at an average of 16.53.

29, Prabath Jayasuriya, Sri Lanka

Left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya came into a Sri Lankan side struggling to find control from its spinners. They were disappointing in a heavy defeat against Australia at Galle, one Test after the spinners went wicketless in a victory against Bangladesh in Dhaka.

Enter Jayasuriya. Despite being an infant at Test level, Jayasuriya displayed all his cricketing know-how with a wonderful display of variations in speed and turn en-route to 29 wickets at an average of 20.37.

27, Rodney Hogg, Australia

Another Australian in the list. Pacer Rodney Hogg took an incredible five five-wicket hauls in his first six innings as a Test bowler, all against England in 1978. His first 27 wickets cost just 11 runs apiece – one of the most memorable starts to a Test career in history.

27, Axar Patel, India

Another Indian in the list, as well as another left-arm spinner. Axar Patel might still live in the nightmares of the English batsmen as he tormented them in the 2021 series in India.

The Englishmen looked clueless particularly against his delivery that went on with the arm. Patel took four five-wicket hauls in six innings to finish with 27 scalps after his first three Tests, the equal third-most ever.

For the first time in 24 years, cricket is part of the Commonwealth Games. Women’s cricket will be the centerpiece from a cricketing perspective, as seven nations seek to challenge Australia, who are undoubtedly favourites for the gold medal.

India is first up in a game that could set up their campaign. If you remember, India upset Australia in their first match of the 2020 T20 World Cup, with the spinners producing the goods in Sydney that night. However, if Harmanpreet Kaur’s team are to topple over the Australians, they will need to bat more proactively than they did in their recent tour of Sri Lanka.

In terms of Australia’s preparations, it was stop-start due to the rain in Ireland. The Aussies were too strong for both Pakistan and Ireland in the series, with Meg Lanning moving back to the number one position in the T20I batting rankings thanks to 113 runs in two innings. Also, the bowlers, led by spinners Alana King and Jess Jonassen, were in fine form, and they will be aiming to make early inroads into India’s batting lineup.

ENG vs SA 2nd T20 Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report

ENG vs SA 2nd T20 Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report | ENG vs SA 2nd T20 Dream11 Prediction Today | England vs South Africa 2nd T20I Key Players | Cardiff Pitch Report

It was entertainment of the highest order as England and South Africa played out another memorable T20I. Less than 24 hours later, the two teams will back at it again, as England aim to win their first white-ball series of their home season.

Led by Jonny Bairstow, Moeen Ali and Dawid Malan, England produced their best white-ball batting display since their magnificent Test run. The attacking, unrelenting strokeplay that they are so well known for has come to the fore, and they have an immediate opportunity to replicate that in Cardiff.

For South Africa, the key question is how they can stop the bleeding against a deep and powerful batting lineup. Andile Phehlukwayo’s place is under the spotlight after conceding 63 in his four overs, while the Proteas need Tabraiz Shamsi to rediscover the form that took him to the number one ranking in 2021.

However, despite the 41-run defeat, there is much to be positive about. The emergence of Tristan Stubbs is as exciting as it is thrilling, forming part of a batting lineup that is looking strong on paper, especially when you consider Rassie van der Dussen and Aiden Markram are to come back.

ENG vs SA 2nd T20 Possible Playing 11

England may look to stick with the same team.

England: 1. Jason Roy, 2. Jos Buttler (c & wk), 3. Dawid Malan, 4. Jonny Bairstow, 5. Moeen Ali, 6. Liam Livingstone, 7. Sam Curran, 8. Chris Jordan, 9. Adil Rashid, 10. Reece Topley, 11. Richard Gleeson/David Willey

Aiden Markram and Rassie van der Dussen were rested for the first T20I. It remains to be seen whether they will return. Dwaine Pretorius could replace Andile Phehlukwayo.

South Africa: 1. Quinton de Kock (wk), 2. Reeza Hendricks, 3. Rilee Rossouw/Rassie van der Dussen, 4. Heinrich Klaasen/Aiden Markram, 5. David Miller (c), 6. Tristan Stubbs, 7. Dwaine Pretorius, 8. Kagiso Rabada, 9. Keshav Maharaj, 10. Lungi Ngidi, 11. Tabraiz Shamsi

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

England:

  • Jonny Bairstow made South Africa pay for missed chances yesterday. After his brilliant 90 (53), he now has 428 runs in 11 innings vs SA at an average of 47.55 and strike rate of 157.35.
  • England used Moeen Ali in the middle overs and it paid dividends. The all-rounder smashed a magnificent 52 off 18 balls, taking his career strike rate against South Africa to 180.45.
  • Also, England could be tempted to use Moeen early with the ball. He has dismissed Quinton de Kock four times for 60 runs in 42 deliveries in T20s.
  • Dawid Malan enjoys playing against the Proteas. He smashed 42 off 23 balls yesterday, part of 338 runs in seven knocks vs SA in T20Is (avg. 56.33, SR 159.43).
  • Also, Malan has a good record in T20s at Cardiff: 8 inns, 264 runs, avg. 44.00, SR 132.00.
  • Reece Topley’s dream season continued. He dismissed left-handers de Kock and Rilee Rossouw yesterday on his way to 2/29. Also, the left-armer has taken five wickets in four matches on this ground (avg. 21, econ. 8.08).
  • Chris Jordan was his usual self in the field yesterday, taking another terrific catch. He has the most wickets for England against South Africa in T20Is (15).
  • Adil Rashid in T20s at Cardiff: 6 matches, 9 wickets, avg. 17.78, econ. 7.27. Sam Curran also has good numbers: 5 matches, 7 wickets, avg. 10.57, econ. 6.43.

South Africa:

  • England will be sure to set another strong offside field for Quinton de Kock. So how will he respond? If he gets going, watch out, as he strikes at 160.89 in 10 T20Is vs England (325 runs).
  • What a performance it was by Tristan Stubbs. The youngster smashed 72 off 28 balls, and he will be itching to get back out to the crease today.
  • If Rassie van der Dussen returns, he will be one to watch. He smashed a superb 94* off 60 balls in his last T20I against England. He also scored a century in the ODI series.
  • So too Aiden Markram. He had a brilliant IPL earlier this year (381 runs, avg. 47.63, SR 139.05) and scored 52* off 25 in his last T20I vs England.
  • Lungi Ngidi now has simply incredible numbers against England after his five-wicket haul. He has 17 wickets in just seven matches against them with a strike rate of 9.2. This includes both Roy and Buttler three times each.
  • Kagiso Rabada was wicketless but economical yesterday (4-0-30-0). The pacer, who has nine wickets in seven T20Is vs England, will be better for the run.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-Head: Matches 23, England 12, South Africa 10, N/R 1.
  • England have won six of the past seven T20Is against the Proteas.
  • Jos Buttler has the most runs in ENG-SA T20Is: 16 inns, 438 runs, avg. 33.69, SR 158.12.
  • Rilee Rossouw in T20s this year: 26 inns, 879 runs, avg. 43.95, SR 186.62.
  • David Miller averages just 20.50 with a strike rate of 135.53 vs England. He can fire at anytime, though, as seen in the IPL earlier this year where he scored 320 runs when chasing at a strike rate of 152.38, and was dismissed just twice.

Sophia Gardens Cardiff Pitch Report and Weather

The average first innings score in the Blast at Cardiff this year was just 147.5 (excluding the rain-shortened seven over match between Welsh Dragons and Somerset). The chasing team won four of the seven matches on the ground.

England and South Africa are both capable of smashing that average first innings score. A relatively clear night is forecast.

Will cricket be part of the Olympics?

Cricket News: Will cricket be part of the Olympics? | Cricket using Commonwealth Games for Olympics springboard

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is looking to use its participation in the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022 as a stimulant to further push its quest of getting involved in the Olympic Games.

ICC chief executive Geoff Allardice explained that the board’s annual general meeting (AGM) was held in Birmingham in order to celebrate cricket’s return to the CWG after 24 years.

“We have declared our ambition to be involved in the Olympic Games. We are assisting the LA 2028 organisers and providing any information will help their assessment of different sports with regards to addition to the Olympic programme. But, at this stage, a decision is due next year,” Allardice was quoted in a report by ESPN Cricinfo.

Cricket in the Olympics will help grow the game

Allardice affirmed that putting cricket in multi-sport events like the CWG, Asian Games and the African Games will help for the growth of the game.

“One, it gives a lot of our member countries a seat at the top table for sporting organisations within their country. Two, the coverage of these games reaches new audiences that may not be traditional cricket audiences,” the senior executive form the ICC further opened up on this issue.

Eight teams will be participating in the women’s T20 event of the upcoming CWG in Birmingham. Barbados will be acting as a representative for West Indies whereas India, Pakistan, Australia, England, South Africa, New Zealand and Sri Lanka will make up for the other seven sides. All the matches will be played at the Edgbaston Stadium in Birmingham. The event will begin from 29th July and the final will be played on 7th August.

The Commonwealth Games Federation had stated that around 90 per cent of cricket’s one billion fans reside in the Commonwealth nations.

They hence believed that the game would find resonance not only in Birmingham but also amongst several fans across the competing countries. The ICC along with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) apparently lobbied actively for cricket’s inclusion in the CWG.

ICC set to announce first-ever women’s cricket FTP

Cricket News: ICC set to announce first-ever women’s cricket FTP | ICC to announce Future Tours Programme for women’s cricket

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is set to unveil the first-ever women’s Future Tour Program (FTP) spanning from 2022-25.

ESPNCricinfo reports that teams will primarily engage in three-match One Day International (ODI) series as per this FTP. These series’ will be a part of the Women’s Championships that will help sides qualify for the 2025 ODI World Cup that will be held in India.

Women’s cricket FTP a huge step in the right direction for the women’s game

“The women’s FTP is going to be published. It’s the first time we have had a long-term plan around women’s series that can give broadcasters and fans a certainty about who is playing who and what time of the year,” Geoff Allardice, chief executive officer (CEO) of the ICC, was quoted in a report by the aforementioned website.

Allardice added, “It is structured around the ICC Women’s Championships through from 2022-25 with a lead up to the next World Cup which will be staged in India.”

Accordingly, the long-drawn demand of having a clear and persistent roadmap for women’s cricket might finally see the light of day in the coming times. Cricket boards have shied away from increasing the number and regularity of games in female cricket due to reported reluctance from the broadcaster’s end so far.

However, Allardice explained that he heard positive feedback from his interactions with some women’s cricket captains in an ICC-hosted panel discussion in Birmingham on Tuesday.

The players apparently informed him about that their schedules have become busier than before. The ICC CEO affirmed that the growth of women’s T20 leagues across the world along with these international games will bring about a very solid calendar for female cricket in the future.

Regardless of these developments, women’s Tests still continue to be an optional product. Only 10 Test matches have been played in women’s cricket since 2014 and all of them since 2017 have eventually resulted in a draw. “I can’t really see women’s Test cricket evolving at any particular speed,” ICC chairman Greg Barclay had quipped in a chat with the BBC Test Match Special recently.

Where will the World Test Championship (WTC) Final be played?

Cricket News: Where will the World Test Championship (WTC) Final be played? | ICC announces venue for WTC Finals 2023 and 2025

Lord’s will host the finals for the ongoing and next edition of the World Test Championship (WTC) in 2023 and 2025 respectively. The International Cricket Council (ICC) made this decision in its Annual General Meeting (AGM) that concluded in Birmingham on Tuesday 26 July, 2022.

The inaugural final of the competition was initially supposed to be held in Lord’s in June 2021. However, the venue was shifted to Ageas Bowl due to the Covid-19 restrictions prevalent at that point in time.

“It’s June so that rules out a number of other venues and we’ve got to get certainty around where it’s hosted. We’re out of Covid now so subject to arrangements being made and being able to be hosted out of Lord’s I think that’s the intention,” ICC chairman Greg Barclay had told the BBC Test Match Specialsome time ago.

As of now, South Africa and Australia occupy the top-two spots in the WTC 2021-23 standings. Pakistan, India and West Indies follow the table-toppers in the rankings respectively. New Zealand won the first edition of the WTC by defeating India by eight wickets in the first finale of the competition last year.

Changes in ICC Chairperson Election Process

Moreover, the ICC has gone on to make some tweaks in the process of electing the next chairperson of the board. The polls are due to be held in November 2022 and the victor will be decided by a simple majority instead of a two-thirds one. Incumbent chairman Barclay is likely to fight for another term in office that will run from December 2022-November 2024.

Membership Update

The ICC has also received an update regarding the cricket situation in Afghanistan from its working group in addition to the representatives of the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB). They have put on hold the Ukraine Cricket Federation’s application for Associate membership.

The federation will have to mandatorily fulfil some clauses of the membership criteria, which includes having an appropriate administrative structure and a pathway for women’s cricket as well. Further, Uzbekistan, Cambodia and Cote D’Ivoire have been granted the associate membership status, which takes the count of the total number of members in the ICC to 10, ESPNCricinfo reports.

India, Bangladesh and England set to host Women’s World Cups

Cricket News: India, Bangladesh and England set to host Women’s World Cups | Locations set for T20 World Cups and ODI World Cup until 2027

India has won the rights to host the women’s One Day International (ODI) World Cup in 2025, Cricbuzz reports. The T20 World Cups in 2024 and 2026 will be held in Bangladesh and England respectively. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka is set to be the host nation for the inaugural T20 Champions Trophy in 2027.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has clarified that these countries were awarded the rights on the basis of a competitive bidding process. A sub-committee comprising of Martin Snedden, Clare Connor, Ricky Skerritt and Sourav Ganguly reviewed each bid.

“Accelerating the growth of the women’s game is one of the ICC’s strategic priorities and taking these events to some of our sport’s biggest markets give us a fantastic opportunity to do that and deepen its connection with cricket’s one billion plus fans,” ICC Chairman Greg Barclay was quoted in a report by the aforementioned website.

Women’s World Cups will help accelerate the growth of the game

Meanwhile, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah asserted that India has the necessary infrastructure in place to deliver a successful edition of the Women’s ODI World Cup.

ECB’s interim CEO Clare Connor reminisced Heather Knight lifting the ODI World Cup for England at Lord’s in 2017. He explained that women’s cricket has developed by leaps and bounds since then with a greater number of girls taking up the sport at various professional levels.

“We’re seeing right now the positive impact that the Women’s Euros is having for football, and hosting this global cricket event will give us another incredible opportunity to inspire even more girls to pick up a bat and ball,” Connor further explained.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh will be hosting the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup for the second time. The tournament was played over there back in 2014 and Australia had emerged victorious in that edition of the competition. Moreover, the women’s T20 finals will be extended to 12 teams from the current 10 from 2026 onwards.

The Women’s Champions Trophy is a new format and Sri Lanka will host the inaugural edition of the six-nation tournament in 2027. But it remains subject to their own qualification for the same. Accordingly, three of the four major women’s ICC tournaments set to be played till 2027 are likely to be hosted in the Indian sub-continent.

Will India women win the 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medal?

Cricket News: Will India women win the 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medal? | India aiming to win gold at 2022 Games

Indian vice-captain Smriti Mandhana has expressed excitement about participating in the Commonwealth Games (CWG) as cricket returns to the international multi-nation tournament after 24 years.

The 26-year-old mentioned that the Indian squad will strive to win the gold medal in the Games that will commence in Birmingham from 28 July.

We are aiming for gold – India vice-captain Smriti Mandhana

“Really excited to be part of the Commonwealth games. I think it is something very new for me and our team. We’ve never experienced going out and playing a tournament where other sports are also involved. So, I’m definitely looking forward to it,” the southpaw was quoted in a report by CricBuzz.

“We all know the feeling because we’ve all watched the Commonwealth and Olympics, when the Indian flag goes higher and we hear the national anthem… everyone knows that feeling and definitely we are aiming for gold. I don’t think we’ll look for just a podium finish because when the flag goes higher and the national anthem plays, that’s the best feeling,” Mandhana explained to the aforementioned website.

Commonwealth Games 2022 format

Eight sides will be participating in the women’s event with the teams being segregated in two groups of four countries each.

England automatically qualified for the Games as they are hosting the upcoming edition of the CWG. The next five teams, i.e., Australia, India, New Zealand, South Africa and Pakistan qualified on the basis of their standings in the ICC Women’s T20 Rankings.

West Indies could have taken the next spot but their place was to be determined by a regional qualifier as the team is made up of a group of nations. However, the qualifiers could not take place due to the Covid-19 pandemic and their spot was taken by Barbados as they were the winners of the most-recent Twenty20 Blaze that took place in 2019.

A Commonwealth Games Qualifier (CWQ) was held at the Kinrara Oval in Malaysia to select the eighth team for the tournament. Sri Lanka won that tournament undefeated and are now set to compete in Group B with the likes of England, South Africa and New Zealand.

Group A: Australia, Barbados, India, Pakistan

Group B: England, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka

The top-placed team from both the groups will play against the second-placed side of the opposite group in the Semi Finals. The losers of the Semi Finals will contest each other in the third-place playoff for the bronze medal.

The final will be conducted on 7th August. India’s campaign will begin against Australia on 29th July.

Cricket last featured in the CWG as a 16-team men’s tournament in Malaysia back in 1998. South Africa, Australia and New Zealand had clinched the gold, silver and bronze medals respectively. Women’s cricket will continue to feature in CWG 2026 that will be conducted in Victoria in Australia.

England and South Africa have played some thrilling T20Is over the years. In early 2020, the two teams played memorable contests, with the Proteas winning by one run followed by England’s two-run win two days later.

With both teams possessing great firepower – most notably in the two captains – we could be in for thrilling T20 cricket.
