Life after Kyle Coetzer officially begins for Scotland. The former captain recently announced his retirement from T20Is, passing the baton on after an excellent career leading Scotland to bigger and better things on the field.

However, there is quite a big distraction hanging over the heads of everyone in Scotland cricket. A shocking indepndent report revealed Cricket Scotland to be institutionally racist, with 448 examples of racism found in the Changing the Boundaries report by Plan4Sport.

Indeed, what promised to be a nice occasion with the visit of an established Full Member nation is bathed in institutional turmoil. Now, the players will need to put all that aside and deliver against New Zealand, as the series serves as fantastic preparation for T20 World Cup later this year.

The Black Caps come into the series off the back of an efficient 3-0 series win in Ireland. Glenn Phillips was particularly brilliant, but contributions throughout the lineup would have been most pleasing, and they will be aiming for more of the same.

  • George Munsey is the only Scotland player to strike at over 140 in T20Is (146.31). In nine T20s at Grange Cricket Club, Munsey has struck 192 runs at an average of 24.00 and strike rate of 148.84.
  • Richie Berrington has the most runs of any player in T20s on this ground. The new skipper has struck 251 runs in eight innings at an average of 41.83 and strike rate of 121.84. This includes four 30+ scores.
  • However, Berrington comes into this series in poor form in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 tournament. After his 107* vs USA in late May, Berrington made scores of 13, 15, 1, 3, 0 and 4*.
  • Calum MacLeod has a key role to play as an experienced member of the Scotland team. He has just one 30+ score in nine T20s on this ground (overall average of 21.00), so how he fares here will be interesting to see.
  • All-rounder Michael Leask struck a brilliant 42* off 20 balls against New Zealand in the 2021 T20 World Cup. Also, Leask has the most wickets (13) at Grange Cricket Club at an impressive average of 15.08 and economy of 6.53.

New Zealand:

  • Martin Guptill struck 93 off 56 balls against Scotland back in November 2021. What made the knock so impressive is that it was played during the day in hot Dubai.
  • Guptill scored 15 off 8 against Sharif, 38 off 16 against Evans and 19 off 12 against Greaves that day.
  • Glenn Phillips produced two man of the match performances in the recent three-match series vs Ireland. Overall, he struck 148 runs at an average of 148 and strike rate of 132.14.
  • James Neesham smashed 53 runs in the Ireland series at a strike rate of 220.83. The all-rounder also took two wickets.
  • Lockie Ferguson was in fine form in Ireland. The pacer took five wickets in two matches at an economy of 4.50.

Cricket Australia (CA) has confirmed that Disney Star has bagged the media rights to broadcast Australian cricket throughout India and other Asian territories.

The seven-year agreement will begin from 2023 onwards as Star will televise the international games played in Australia along with the men’s and women’s versions of the Big Bash League (BBL). Sony Pictures Network India (SPNI) are the present right holders of the same.

Star the host broadcaster for Australia matches in India after bagging the IPL rights

Star’s recent victory of the TV broadcast rights of the Indian Premier League (IPL) sparked hopes within the CA that it will bring about extensive cross-promotion of the BBL.

Nick Hockley, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of CA, expressed that Disney Star is synonymous with cricket in India. He gleefully talked about the excitement of working with the broadcaster to ‘showcase the outstanding cricket played in Australia every summer’.

“The magnitude of this association is testament to the enduring rivalry and respect that exists between Australian and Indian teams, the excitement and popularity of WBBL and BBL, and the high regard of Australian cricket in India and global markets more broadly,” Hockley was quoted in a report by CricBuzz.

He added, “There was significant interest in our rights and we are very grateful to our current rights holder Sony for their partnership which will continue throughout this season.”

On the other hand, Disney Star will be delighted at securing these rights as they lost out to the Reliance Industries-backed Viacom 18 in the digital broadcasting race for the upcoming cycle of the IPL in the media rights auction last month.

“Disney Star has been delighting millions of Indian fans by showcasing marquee cricket across our linear and digital platforms,” Sanjog Gupta, Head of Sports at Disney Star, was quoted in an official report by the CA.

Gupta added, “Some of the most memorable moments for Indian fans have been produced in Australia and we look forward to elevating many more such moments with our unique brand of story-telling, programming, local activations and tech-enabled experiences in association with Cricket Australia.”

Meanwhile, CA is embroiled in a legal tussle with its home broadcaster Channel Seven back in Australia. The free-to-air television network kicked off a course case against the CA whilst citing several breaches in their agreement.

Australia legend Ricky Ponting says the defending T20 World Cup champions should pick Tim David for this year’s tournament. The former captain, now commentator and Head of Strategy at Hobart Hurricanes, believes David is the kind of player that can get Australia over the line in their title defence.

While Australia did win last year without David, a number of teams will be aiming for improved displays down under in October. So, Australia need to look to improve themselves, and Ponting believes the big hitter could be the final piece of the puzzle.

“If I was a selector, I would love to have someone like that in my team,” Ponting said. “If he’s playing or not, just to have that sort of striking power ability around, he’s an out and out match-winner.

Tim David can be like the Andrew Symonds of 2003 – Ricky Ponting

Ponting compared David’s hitting to the late Andrew Symonds, who tragically passed away earlier this year. Specifically, the former captain looked back on Symonds’ incredible 2003 World Cup campaign – a tournament that Symonds came into under lots of pressure but had Ponting’s backing.

“He’s [David] the sort of player that could actually win you a World Cup. He’s not just the average run-of-the-mill guy that might just sneak into a squad,” Ponting said.

“I mean, he actually reminds me a bit of someone like an Andrew Symonds back in the 2003 World Cup. You know if you get them in and you give him an opportunity they’re a chance of winning a tournament for you. That’s how I’d be looking at him right now. I know there are some other great world-quality players in the middle order for Australia. But probably none of them boasts the resume as good as Tim’s over the last two years.”

David should have played more in IPL 2022 – Ponting

Tim David has been terrific in T20s around the globe, including the IPL where he delivered spectacular performances. Mumbai Indians dropped him after just two matches, but he then showed what he is capable of.

“He’s been incredible in almost every tournament that he’s played around the world, the last 12 or 18 months,” Ponting said. “He was probably a little bit unlucky not to play more in the IPL this year to be honest, with the way that he started with Mumbai and then didn’t come back until right near the end and played some match-winning knocks then.”

For Australia, they have the task of fitting him into the XI. The likes of Aaron Finch and Matthew Wade have previously spoken highly of David, but where he slots in is cause for debate.

On paper, Steve Smith’s place looks most under threat. Smith, before the Sri Lanka series earlier this year, was told to shed the ‘anchor’ tag and play with total freedom. However, Australia will need to make a call as to who could play that role better in a big tournament – Smith or David.

The 2022 men’s T20 World Cup will kick off on October 16 as Sri Lanka take on Namibia. Australia’s first match will be against New Zealand on October 22 at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Then, when you thought England’s batting was a worry, South Africa’s was worse. The Proteas were out of the contest when they plunged to the depths of 6/4, and the visitors will be seeking the kind of performance they put together in the opening ODI of the series.

Indeed, in a season where the batsmen have found the going tough in ODIs, the top order that sets the best platform might emerge with the series trophy. England, usually reliable in this format, are not in the best batting form. South Africa, coming off an 83-all out, have some bouncing back to do.

  • Adil Rashid has taken the equal-most wickets of any player in ODIs at Headingley. The legspinner has 12 wickets to his name in six matches at an average of 27.25 and strike rate of 28.9.

South Africa:

  • Quinton de Kock is the player who can take the game away from England in quick time. He still averages a brilliant 57.07 in 14 ODIs against England, with three fifties and three centuries.
  • Rassie van der Dussen was strangled down the legside in the second ODI after a masterful 134* in the opening match.
  • Since the start of 2021, van der Dussen has struck 792 runs in 16 ODIs at an average of 72.00. This year alone, he has hit two centuries and two fifties in eight knocks.
  • Aiden Markram was out without facing a ball in the second match. He played beautifully in the first ODI (77), and the Proteas will be hoping for more of the same.
  • Dwaine Pretorius is always improving as a white-ball bowler and that was on show in the last ODI. He finished with 4/36, and had 3/9 at one point courtesy of his excellent variations.
  • Anrich Nortje conceded 10.25 an over in the last match. However, his wicket-taking ability is clear to see. The pacer has the most wickets of any bowler in this series to date (6).

Jonny Bairstow has assured that he will continue to play all three formats of international cricket following Ben Stokes’ retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs). English Test skipper Stokes hung his boots from 50-overs cricket as he expressed his inability to cope with the tightly-packed cricketing schedule.

Accordingly, Bairstow is now the only English player likely to feature in every format of the game. He has already played four Tests, two ODI series’ and is set to feature in the T20Is against South Africa this summer.

Bairstow has been in an imperious run of form recently with his Test career getting reinvigorated under the tutelage of Brendon McCullum.

“I don’t know if it’s good or bad that I’m one of the last all-format players,” the wicketkeeper-batsman was quoted in a report by ESPNCricinfo. The 32-year-old reflected on the closely-knit fixtures with several international matches overlapping with each other. There was an instance last month when England was playing New Zealand in a Test series at home whilst the ODI team contested in a three-match ODI series in the Netherlands.

“But you know me well enough now: I’ll be trying to play all of them for as long as possible. I’ll be going all out for as long as I can. There might come a time when you do have to make a decision for different reasons, but that’s part and parcel of life and cricket, but in the near future I can’t see me making a choice because I’m loving being part of all three squads,” Bairstow opened up on the issue. 

He added, “They’re all individual squads and they’re great to be a part of. It’s exciting. You go into a new one and you’ve got a freshness and new faces and energy around them, because you’re going into a new format.”

Bairstow has already featured in eight Tests and five ODIs in 2022. In addition to that, he played a significant part of the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Punjab Kings this year.

The Yorkshire player will also turn up for the Welsh Fire for their first three games of the Hundred. Later on, he will be expected to don a crucial role for England in their World T20 campaign Down Under later on this year. Bairstow lamented upon the lack of training days prior to games. He even expressed discontentment over the players’ inability to do anything regarding the scheduling.

“The schedule is the schedule. It’s difficult to say if you want to play less but Stokesy (Ben Stokes) has a point in some ways about the overlapping games that there are. There used to be lead-ins to series and training days before games, but there are back-to-back games coming up now,” he was quoted in the aforementioned report.

Stokes had drawn an analogy of the authorities’ treating players like cars whilst speaking of the back-to-back set of games that England is slated to play. Bairstow concurred with that comparison and conceded that playing each game with full intensity might make the players devoid of the same going ahead.

Pakistan players Babar Azam, Mohammed Rizwan and Shaheen Shah Afridi are set to participate in the Big Bash League’s (BBL) inaugural draft for international players.

Other overseas stars set to take a part in the draft include the likes of Kieron Pollard, Rashid Khan, Dwayne Bravo, Faf du Plessis, Colin Munro A total of 170 players are believed to have put their name in for this exercise that is aimed to reinvigorate the BBL.

However, only 28 of those names have been publicised so far, Daily Telegraph reports. The BBL 12 draft will be held on 28th August and it will be broadcast live on Fox Sports.

The Melbourne Renegades are set to get the first pick in the overseas players draft after being drawn first in the league’s weighted lottery process.

Azam and Rizwan have emerged as certified T20 stars with their incredible performances in the shortest format of the international game for Pakistan in recent years. They are the top-two placed batsmen in ICC Men’s T20 Rankings respectively and were integral in Pakistan’s impressive run to the semi-finals in the World T20 last year.

Azam notched 939 runs, including nine half-centuries and a century, at an average and strike rate of 37.56 and 127.58 respectively in 29 T20Is in 2021. In the same calendar year, Rizwan scored 1326 runs at an average of 73.67 in 29 T20Is. He bagged 12 half-centuries and a solitary century as the wicketkeeper-batsman’s stocks shot up exponentially in the T20 format.

Shaheen Shah Afridi – Pakistan’s Bowling Lynchpin

Less than a week after West Indies and India finished their last ODI campaigns against different opponents, they meet in the first of three matches at Port of Spain. Relevancy, always a key topic in ODI cricket, will be a key discussion point once again as this series is not part of the Super League but was squeezed into the calendar anyway; the kind of scheduling that Ben Stokes spoke out about after he retired from the format.

In terms of this series, India, even without a number of regulars, are odds-on favourites to win. The Windies have been diabolical in ODI cricket, losing 11 of their 15 matches this year including a 2-1 loss at home to Ireland and a thumping 3-0 defeat at the hands of Bangladesh just last week. Worse, they have batted first 12 times since the beginning of last year, and only played out their full 50 overs on three occasions. If they can’t bat out their 50 overs here, chances are India won’t even need to bat given a win will look guaranteed.

For India, it is an opportunity for a number of players to impress. The likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shreyas Iyer are high on the watchlist given the spotlight has been shining on them in recent times. Also, the bowling attack, after an excellent display in England, will be looking to make inroads into a Windies’ batting lineup that struggled badly against Bangladesh.

Most teams are directing their focus on T20Is with the 2022 T20 World Cup fast approaching. However, the ODI World Cup is due to be held in India next year and hence equal focus must be laid on the 50-over format simultaneously. The series provides India an opportunity to test their bench strength against the Nicholas Pooran-led West Indian unit.

However, he averages 36.62 with a strike rate 92.20 in 77 List A innings. He has scored four centuries and 13 half-centuries in his List A career so far and his proficiency against spinners makes him the ideal fit for the middle-order.

5. Suryakumar Yadav

Suryakumar Yadav will be marshalling the middle-order in this setup. He is coming on the back of a remarkable century in the recent third T20I vs England. The 31-year-old will be looking to cement his spot in the playing XI in the run-up to the ODI World Cup next year.

6. Deepak Hooda

Deepak Hooda could be tasked with finishing duties in this particular squad. He averages 38.53 with a strike rate of 93.86 across 76 List A matches. Hooda has donned a variety of roles in recent games for the Indian side but paucity of top-order opportunities might force him down the order at least for this series.

7. Ravindra Jadeja

Ravindra Jadeja will continue to hold the crucial number seven slot in the team. The leg-spinner has taken 13 wickets at a bowling average of 25 and 29.46 in seven ODIs against the West Indies. The 31-year-old is likely to cause troubles to the Caribbean batsmen in tandem with Jadeja in the middle-overs.

11. Arshdeep Singh

The management seems to have taken a liking for Arshdeep Singh’s incredible ability to bowl well in the tough overs. He comes in with the tricky left-arm angle as well and has particularly shown calibre to contain the flow of runs in the death overs. One can expect him to be given a fair chance in the next three ODIs at least.
