Which team has the most ducks in a single Test innings?

Cricket News: Which team has the most ducks in a single Test innings? List of most ducks in a single Test innings

Bangladesh was bundled for 109 in the first innings of their opening test vs West Indies in Antigua. More glaringly, as many as six batsmen from the team were dismissed for a duck. Shakib Al Hasan would have surely envisioned a better start to his captaincy tenure, but it wasn’t to be.

In fact, Shakib along with opener Tamim Iqbal were the only ones who provided some resistance with their scores of 51 and 29 respectively. However, this game presented Cricblog an opportunity to go down the memory lane and explore instances when the most ducks were recorded by a team in a Test innings. Interestingly, there have been multiple occasions when six players of a side have gotten out for a nought!

There have been five instances of an innings consisting of six ducks since 2000. Bangladesh have been involved in three of them.

Most ducks in a Test innings since 2000

Bangladesh vs West Indies, Antigua, 2022

Bangladesh looked absolutely out of sorts on the opening day of the test in Antigua. Kemar Roach, Jayden Seales and Alzarri Joseph tormented the visitors with the new Duke’s ball. Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mominul Haque, Nurul Hasan, Mustafizur Rahman and Khaled Ahmed were sent packing for a duck as West Indies managed to wrap up the entire innings in 35.2 overs itself.

Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka, Mirpur, 2022

More embarrassingly, Bangladesh had actually recorded such a dismal feat just last month in the first innings of their test vs Sri Lanka in Mirpur. Kasun Rajitha and Asitha Fernando had shared the spoils and picked nine wickets between them. However, Bangladesh had managed to get to 365 in that innings due to a mammoth 175 from Mushfiqur Rahim and 141 runs by Litton Das. Sri Lanka eventually ended up winning that game by 10 wickets.

New Zealand vs Pakistan, Dubai, 2018

New Zealand were stuck in a similar situation in 2018 as Bangladesh are today. The Kiwis could put up only 90 runs in their first innings of the second test in Dubai in response to Pakistan’s 418. Ross Taylor, Henry Nicholls, Colin de Grandhomme, Ish Sodhi, Neil Wagner and Trent Boult got out for a duck. Yasir Shah dismissed five of them en route to his record eight-wicket haul to steer Pakistan to a memorable victory in that game.

India vs England, Manchester, 2014

India and England were tied at 1-1 whilst heading into the fourth game of their five-match Test series in 2014. However, MS Dhoni’s men were blown away by the ageless duo of James Anderson and Stuart Broad and the team put up only 152 runs in the first innings. Murali Vijay, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Pankaj Singh were dismissed for a duck. Anderson and Broad scalped three each amongst these six wickets to ensure that England took a 2-1 lead getting into the final game of the series.

Bangladesh vs West Indies, Dhaka, 2002

It must be a concerning sign for Bangladesh cricket that their test credentials haven’t arguably improved well enough in the last two decades. Back in 2002, a fierce West Indian bowling attack had bowled Bangladesh out for 87 in the second innings of their test in Dhaka.

Mohammed Ashraful, Alok Kapali, Khaled Mashud, Enamul Haque, Tapash Baisya and Talha Jubair were the ones who didn’t trouble the scorers in their way back to the dressing room. Jermaine Lawson and Vasbert Drakes took six and three wickets respectively to help West Indies win the test by a whopping margin of an innings and 310 runs.

IND vs SA 4th T20 Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report

IND vs SA 4th T20 Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report | IND vs SA 4th T20 Dream11 Prediction Today | India vs South Africa 4th T20I Key Players | Rajkot Pitch Report

India will square off with South Africa at Rajkot in a must-win encounter on Friday. Rishabh Pant’s men managed to keep the series alive with a convincing win at Vishakhapatnam in the third T20I on Tuesday. However, the home team will have to win the remaining two on the trot now to emerge victorious in this tightly-contested home series.

The South African batting really stepped up to the challenge in the opening two T20Is. However, the Indian bowlers struck back fiercely to make up for a disjointed effort with the bat in Vizag. Both the teams have plenty to play for in the fourth match and that has kept the interested and excitement around the series quite upbeat so far. Without any further ado, let us get into the in-depth details of the upcoming game.

IND vs SA 4th T20 Possible Playing 11

The Indian team surprised many by naming an unchanged XI in Vizag after consecutive losses in the first two games. However, they derived a positive result out of the match and hence it is likely they will continue with a similar team on Friday.

India: 1: Ruturaj Gaikwad, 2: Ishan Kishan, 3: Shreyas Iyer, 4: Rishabh Pant (c & wk), 5: Hardik Pandya, 6: Dinesh Karthik, 7: Axar Patel, 8: Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 9: Harshal Patel, 10: Avesh Khan, 11: Yuzvendra Chahal.

South Africa would arguably not press the panic button merely after one loss. They have come across as a confident unit so far and will probably continue with the same XI in this game. Only Quinton de Kock’s recovery from his wrist injury could trigger a change in their lineup.

South Africa: 1: Temba Bavuma (c), 2: Reeza Hendricks/Quinton de Kock, 3: Rassie van der Dussen, 4: Heinrich Klassen, 5: David Miller, 6: Dwaine Pretorious, 7: Wayne Parnell, 8: Kagiso Rabada, 9: Anrich Nortje, 10: Keshav Maharaj, 11: Tabraiz Shamsi.

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

India:

  • Dinesh Karthik has struck three half-centuries and scored 224 runs at an average of 32 in 10 T20 matches in the Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA) Stadium.
  • Ruturaj Gaikwad has notched 122 runs at an average of 30.50 and strike rate of 141.86 in four T20 games in this ground.
  • Axar Patel fares well in his home state. The left-arm off-spinner has taken nine wickets in seven games at an economy rate of 7.26 including a three-wicket and four-wicket haul each in Rajkot.
  • Bhuvneshwar Kumar has taken seven wickets, which includes two three-wicket hauls, at an economy rate of 7.75 in three T20 games in this ground.
  • Yuzvendra Chahal will be India’s strike bowler and the dimensions of the ground might work to his benefit. He has taken seven scalps in four games in Rajkot, which indicates that it has been a happy hunting ground for the leg-spinner.

South Africa:

  • Temba Bavuma will have to be wary of losing his wicket to Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the pacer’s opening spell. Bavuma has scored only six runs in the 16 deliveries that he has faced off Bhuvneshwar in T20Is. The fast-bowler has also dismissed the South African skipper once.
  • South Africa are set to pit Heinrich Klassen’s power in the middle-order against Yuzvendra Chahal’s prowess with the ball. Klassen has 74 runs at a strike rate of 246.7 against the wily leg-spinner and this match-up will have an instrumental role in deciding the eventual outcome of this game.
  • The visitors can consider using David Miller’s power-hitting to shake up India’s bowling plans in the middle overs. The 33-year-old has scored 31 runs off 17 deliveries of Axar Patel in T20Is. This is a match-up that Miller will fancy coming up against and he can optimise the ground conditions in Rajkot for the same as well.
  • Bavuma might have to shield Tabraiz Shamsi against Shreyas Iyer in the middle-order. Iyer strikes at a rate of 215.8 against the leg-spinner and South Africa might have to constrain that to not cede a significant advantage to the home team after the powerplay, although Shamsi did dismiss Iyer in the last match.
  • Will South Africa adopt a different bowling strategy in the first six overs to get rid of Gaikwad and Kishan? The openers have fantastic records against Anrich Nortje and Kagiso Rabada respectively. For instance, Gaikwad has scored 67 runs in 36 deliveries with nine fours and three sixes against Nortje in T20 cricket so far. It is a high-risk game as Nortje has dismissed Gaikwad twice too.
  • Keshav Maharaj has a middling T20I bowling record in India. The off-spinner has taken three wickets in as many games but has conceded runs at an economy of 11.29.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-Head: Played 17, India 10, South Africa 7.
  • South Africa has never lost a T20I series in India. They won the one in 2019 whereas the 2015 one had ended in a 1-1 draw.
  • India last lost a T20I series way back in February 2019 against Australia at home.
  • Rishabh Pant has an average of 12.60 and a strike rate of 112.50 in five T20Is against South Africa. The Indian skipper has struggled to find his form in this series as well.
  • Axar Patel has picked only three wickets in six games at an economy rate of 9.71 vs South Africa.

Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium Rajkot Pitch Report And Weather

The Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium generally offers a good batting track. The average first innings total in three T20Is in this ground in 183 runs. Rajkot is projected to have a partly cloudy weather with temperature ranging around 32°C during the time of the game.

IPL Media Rights Auction analysis: 5 key takeaways from US$6 billion deal

Cricket News: IPL Media Rights Auction analysis: 5 key takeaways from US$6 billion deal | Analysis: 5 key takeaways from the IPL 2023-27 Media Rights Auction

The intensely-conducted media rights auction for the Indian Premier League (IPL) concluded with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) attracting revenue worth Rs 48,390 crore (approx. US$6.2 billion) for the five-year cycle beginning from 2023.

The IPL has thus become the second-most valuable sporting league in the world in terms of its per match value. It has overtaken the English Premier League (EPL) and is only behind the National Football League (NFL) in these standings currently.

Moreover, the sum raked in through this latest round of auction is close to three times more than what the BCCI got for the media rights sales (Rs 16,347.50 crore) for the previous term from 2017-2022.

The e-auctions witnessed participation from some of the biggest broadcasting behemoths in the field. In this article, Cricblog takes a look at five of the biggest takeaways from these much-anticipated sales.

IPL media rights auction analysis: 5 key takeaways

1. Star India Retains Its TV Stronghold

Star India fended off competition from the Reliance-backed Viacom18 and Sony to extend its hold over the TV broadcasting rights for the coming five years. Many expected the former to cede ground to the emerging players but they managed to bag the bragging title by bidding a total of Rs 23,575 crore for 410 games. It amounts to payments worth Rs 57.40 crore per game and allows Star to sustain its sway over the considerable audience that consumes the IPL games via the traditional TV medium.

2. Viacom18 Sparks New Digital Revolution?

Viacom18 entered this contest as a formidable player and went on to win the digital-only broadcasting rights for the India subcontinent region for Rs 20,500 crore for 410 games. It boils down to a sum of Rs 50 crore per game. Viacom18 had emerged as the highest bidder with Rs 48 crore for each match.

But Star India reportedly matched their bid and the Reliance-backed entity raised its proposal to the aforementioned victorious amount eventually. Viacom18’s bid has clear indications of the way tides are turning in the sports broadcasting spectrum. They seem to have bet big on India’s ever-expanding digital presence and look to go toe-to-toe with Star’s legacy of TV broadcasts of the IPL game.

3. Uday Shankar Accomplished Consolidated Digital Rights For Reliance?

The fact that Reliance roped in Uday Shankar and James Murdoch, both dignified former Disney executives, just prior to the media rights auctions signalled that Viacom18 would be a significant player in this process.

But rather than outbidding Star for the TV rights, they instead doubled down on the digital rights front. In addition to securing the Package B, they even won over Package C that concerned around the non-exclusive digital broadcasting rights for a special package of 18 games for the given five-year period.

With a total of Rs 3,258 crore, they are putting in a sum of Rs 33.24 crore per game for this limited set of matches. In total, with Packages B and C, Viacom18 has nearly matched the sum that Star paid only for Package A. It tells you that putting in the money wasn’t arguably an issue for the Reliance-backed entity. Instead, they perhaps wanted to concentrate more on the all-encompassing digital rights so that it can intertwiningly play a vital role in the conglomerate’s growth in the telecommunications sector with Jio.

4. Times Internet Enters The Overseas Market Fray

Times Internet has interestingly entered the international market sector by winning Package D related to the Overseas TV and Digital Rights along with Viacom18. They put up a victorious bid of Rs 1324 crore for this deal wherein Times Internet will be catering to the MENA and the US sectors. Viacom18 will provide its services in Australia, South Africa and the British territories.

Times Internet will be carrying out the broadcasts through its Cricbuzz platform, which is one of the arguably few cricket websites to have made a seamless transition to video and now the broadcasting format. This particular deal signified the entrance of emerging market players in the big game of IPL media rights and could pave the way for more entities to get involved in this exercise in the coming future.

5. BCCI Is Again Setting Benchmarks For The World To Follow

The BCCI is taking the numbers game of the IPL to a whole new level through this latest e-auction. The brand value of the league is compounding regularly and ultimately it is Indian cricket and incredible talents from all across the world who are benefitting out of it. Through its advantageous influence of the International Cricket Council (ICC), the BCCI has arguably managed to create a league that has grabbed the viewer’s attention from all across the world.

It has grown exponentially over the last 15 years but will only get better and bigger in the future. The BCCI has shown terrific professionalism in taking the league to this level and is only looking to double down on its efforts to make it even more enthralling and attractive going ahead. Even the entirely transparent and fair process through which the e-auctions were conducted have set a standard benchmark for similar processes to follow further from here.

Long live the IPL!

NED vs ENG 1st ODI Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report

NED vs ENG 1st ODI Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report | NED vs ENG 1st ODI Dream11 Prediction Today | Netherlands vs England 1st ODI Key Players | Amstelveen Pitch Report

It is a sign of England’s incredible white-ball depth that they could hammer 299 in 50 overs to seal the highest run chase ever in a Test at Trent Bridge and then field an incredibly strong ODI lineup a few days later. Netherlands have enjoyed famous victories over England in T20I cricket, but this is a whole different challenge against a side that looks so powerful on paper.

So, how the Dutch tackle this challenge will be interesting to see. It represents a terrific opportunity to test themselves against the best in front of their home fans, after showing some positive signs in their recent 3-0 series loss against West Indies. Tom Cooper will provide some much-needed experience, while the form of the likes of Vikramjit Singh, Max O’Dowd and Logan van Beek is something to build on.

This will be England’s first ODI after a long wait. Their last series was nearly a year ago against Pakistan, where a new-look squad sealed a famous 3-0 series win after COVID-19 ravaged through the initial team. Another opportunity awaits for a number of players to put their hands up for spots in a competitive English ODI setup going forward.

NED vs ENG 1st ODI Possible Playing 11

Tom Cooper is back in the Netherlands squad for this series. He could slot in at three.

Netherlands: 1. Vikramjit Singh, 2. Max O’Dowd, 3. Tom Cooper, 4. Bas de Leede, 5. Scott Edwards (wk), 6. Teja Nidamanuru, 7. Logan van Beek, 8. Pietar Seelaar (c), 9. Aryan Dutt, 10. Ryan Klein, 11. Vivian Kingma

England have named a very strong squad for this series. There was no room for Sam Billings. See the full squad here.

Luke Wood, despite having not played a single 50-over match in three years, is in line for an ODI debut in this series. Dawid Malan, who has two fifties in six ODIs, is expected to bat at three.

If Sam Curran is picked, he is expected to play more as a batsman as he eases in after he had a stress fracture in his back.

England: 1. Jason Roy, 2. Phil Salt, 3. Dawid Malan, 4. Jos Buttler (wk), 5. Liam Livingstone, 6. Eoin Morgan (c), 7. Moeen Ali, 8. Sam Curran/David Willey, 9. Luke Wood/Reece Topley, 10. Adil Rashid, 11. Brydon Carse

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Netherlands:

  • Keep an eye on Vikramjit Singh. In six ODIs against New Zealand and West Indies, Singh made scores of 19, 31, 25, 47, 46 and 54. He looked in good touch on each occasion.
  • Max O’Dowd struck two half-centuries in three ODIs vs West Indies on this ground recently. However, his strike rate of 66.79 is an area for improvement.
  • O’Dowd has scored 509 runs in 10 ODIs at home at an average of 56.55. This includes five half-centuries.
  • Scott Edwards is Netherlands’ leading run-scorer in ODIs in 2022. The keeper-batsman has struck 323 runs in nine matches at an average of 35.88. with four half-centuries.
  • Logan van Beek is Netherlands’ top wicket-taker in 2022 with 11 scalps in six matches at an average of 26.72. He has taken at least one wicket in each of those matches, including four wickets in three ODIs vs West Indies on this ground.

England:

  • Jason Roy comes into this series in form. He had a brilliant PSL 2022 campaign and struck 50 and 81 in his last two Vitality Blast matches.
  • Jos Buttler is expected to bat at four given his incredible form, where he recently became the second player to hit four centuries in a single IPL season. Also, Buttler has a superb record in ODIs in Europe: 59 inns, 2,021 runs, avg. 43.93, SR 120.15.
  • Liam Livingstone is one of the hottest properties in white-ball cricket. He recently smashed 437 runs in IPL 2022 at a strike rate of 182.08. He will be incredibly dangerous against a Netherlands side that has struggled at the death at times in 2022.
  • Akeal Hosein recently tormented Netherlands with spin on this ground, so watch out for Adil Rashid. He is one away from 100 ODI wickets in Europe (68 innings).
  • Sam Curran scored 69 and took 5/30 in the same game for Surrey in the Vitality Blast on June 2. But, he is expected to have a limited role with the ball, at least early in the series. Expect Moeen Ali to do some bowling in the middle overs.
  • Brydon Carse took 5/61 against Pakistan last year. He could be key in the middle overs for England.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-head: Matches 3, Netherlands 0, England 3.
  • This will be the first meeting between the teams outside of World Cups. The last meeting between the teams was in the 2011 edition.
  • Tom Cooper played the ODI against England in the 2011 World Cup. He scored 47 that day. Overall, he averages 48.88, but has not played an ODI since 2013.
  • Phil Salt struck eight consecutive double-figure scores in the Vitality Blast. He crossed 20 on five occasions.

VRA Ground Amstelveen Pitch Report and Weather

A warm day is forecast for Amstelveen, with a top of about 30 degrees. In the recent series against West Indies, Netherlands scored 240/7 and 214 batting first. West Indies then scored 308/5 in the third ODI, with Netherlands responding well with 288 on a good surface. Expect a good batting track in this clash.

Jonny Bairstow credits IPL for Trent Bridge heroics

Cricket News: Jonny Bairstow credits IPL for Trent Bridge heroics | Bairstow speaks about how the IPL has helped his game

Jonny Bairstow has hit back at criticism of him preferring the Indian Premier League (IPL) over the English County Championship after his swashbuckling century in England’s recent, memorable Test victory over New Zealand. Bairstow struck an incredible 136-run knock in the final day of the game against Kiwis to help England chase down 299 runs within 50 overs.

Though England have taken a 2-0 lead in the series, Bairstow landed in the country only four days prior to the first game due to his IPL engagements with the Punjab Kings.

Bairstow had a middling campaign for Punjab, as he scored 253 runs in 11 games at an average of 23 and a strike rate on the upwards of 140. His form turned around to an extent after he was promoted to the top of the order and the right-hander notched two half-centuries in the season.

You play the best in the world in the IPL – Bairstow

However, he attributes his ability to win the previous game from an improbable position to the high-pressure situations that he has been involved in whilst playing in competitions like the IPL.

“There was a lot of people that were saying I should not be at the IPL and I should be playing county cricket,” Bairstow was quoted in a report by the ESPN Cricinfo.

He added, “That’s part and parcel of the game. Decisions are decisions and if I could say what I wanted to then… But there’s also elements to it where you are playing against the best in the world at the IPL. So being able to have those gears, to be able to go and switch them up, switch them down is important.”

The Punjab Kings player exclaimed that he was proud of the way he shaped his match-winning century against New Zealand. At one point in time, he was batting at 12 off 24 deliveries. But he managed to take off from there to bag 124 runs in the following 68 deliveries. “It wasn’t just a case of let’s go gung-ho. It was right, pick your times, pick your moments and then try and change the game,” he quipped.

“Because it’s those situations that you’ve gone through in the past – whether that be in the IPL, whether that be in one-day cricket, whether that be in red-ball cricket previously that you’re able to call upon evenings like that. And they’re the bits that those opportunities and environments, whether they be for good or bad, (mean) you’re able to produce performances like we as a group have done this game, last game and hopefully going forward,” Bairstow opened up on the debate.

“That’s part and parcel of the game. Decisions are decisions and if I could say what I wanted to then… But there’s also elements to it where you are playing against the best in the world at the IPL. So being able to have those gears, to be able to go and switch them up, switch them down is important.”

Jonny Bairstow

The 32-year-old gave a peek into the England Test team’s changing mentality under the new reign of captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum. England had 299 to chase in 72 overs and they broke it down to the equation of scoring close to per over to get to the target. Bairstow said that it was the prevalent scoring rate throughout the game as well and hence the challenge appeared ‘very manageable and very chasable’.

“We managed to chase it with 22 (overs) left which is a different commodity but it was great fun,” Bairstow quipped.

ECB to charge Yorkshire and seven other individuals on racism allegations

Cricket News: ECB to charge Yorkshire and seven other individuals on racism allegations | Racism at Yorkshire: ECB to hand charges

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is set to charge Yorkshire and seven individuals associated with the racism allegations that have been levelled against them. Those under the scanner currently have not been explicitly named by the ECB.

The county club will be accused of not addressing a hostile culture against the minority-ethnic cricketers within their setup. They will also have to deal with charges of failure with respect to properly responding to complaints regarding racism or any form of discrimination.

None of the members of the present management team and players are amongst the names being investigated right now, ESPNCricinfo reports. On the other hand, the evidence given by Azeem Rafiq to the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport committee in November 2021 is very well-documented.

Yorkshire expected to plead guilty to racism allegations

However, Yorkshire is still accountable for its historic actions and the new management is expected to plead guilty, commit towards change and accept any form disciplinary action for the time being.

The Cricket Discipline Commission (CDC) is authorised to carry out disciplinary hearings in domestic cricket in England. However, the CDC cannot sit in judgment of administrators and hence they will not be charged under this case.

An independent panel of the CDC will hear these cases in September-October 2022. It could possibly last for over a week and even a cross-examination will be conducted of people who provide witness statements.

“The ECB’s investigation has been thorough and complex, with the allegations covering a significant period of time and a number of witnesses and other individuals coming forward to share their own experiences and allegations. The ECB is grateful to all those who have taken the time to speak with the investigating team,” an official statement from the ECB read, as quoted by the aforementioned publication.

The board added, “In matters of this nature, our normal practice is not to identify individuals charged at this stage. This decision is taken on a case-by-case basis. It is however standard practice for the CDC disciplinary panel to publish its decisions and written reasons in full following the hearing.”

Gary Ballance only current player facing racism allegations

Gary Ballance is the only player facing racism allegations who is still on Yorkshire’s books. However, the southpaw hasn’t played throughout the domestic season and is on an indefinite break from the game due to mental health issues.

Former England skipper Michael Vaughan along with Matthew Hoggard and Tim Bresnan have faced racism allegations in this case. Vaughan and Hoggard have repeatedly denied any wrongdoing whereas Bresnan called it a day in his cricketing career prior to the beginning of this county campaign.

Meanwhile, Yorkshire had removed 16 staff members upon the outbreak of this scandal. Andrew Gale and Richard Pyrah, two coaches who lost their jobs in this process, are pursuing claims of wrongful dismissal. They are amongst six concerned individuals who have won the right for their case to be heard at a full employment tribunal in Leeds in the English autumn.

Accordingly, a judicial mediation will now take place before an employment judge in order to reach to an agreement before the aforementioned tribunal hearing begins.

Yorkshire has maintained that their ability to respond could be limited by the refusal to give information by the people in-charge at the time of the cases. “For clarity, YCCC notes that the allegations relate to charges as far back as 2004 up until 2021 and the Club will need the cooperation of those in position during this time in order to fully consider and respond to the matters raised,” the club has stated officially.

It adds, “Unless and until that cooperation by those with first-hand knowledge and responsibility during the relevant period is forthcoming, the Club is not able to comment on the investigation, evidence, report or charges but will, of course, continue to fully cooperate with the CDC throughout this process.”

However, the club will have to live with the fear of possible point deductions as a result of this case given that the hearings will most likely conclude only after the ongoing county season.

SL vs AUS 2nd ODI Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report | SL vs AUS 2nd ODI Dream11 Prediction Today | Sri Lanka vs Australia 2nd ODI Key Players | Pallekele Pitch Report

If this was a series of Monopoly, Australia would have played their get out of jail free card. Glenn Maxwell played a blinder – one of his finest ODI knocks – to lead the tourists to a two-wicket win in a game they were under pressure in multiple times. The second ODI at Pallekele provides an opportunity for Aaron Finch’s team to improve, but they will have to cope with further injuries as Marcus Stoinis and Ashton Agar have been ruled out with side strains.

Sri Lanka’s supporters were understandably heartbroken on Tuesday, and in arguably a bigger blow than Australia’s injuries, star all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga is out of the second ODI at least with a groin strain. The Lions had their chances to win the first ODI, and they are now in need of another strong batting display to cover Hasaranga’s loss. Onus will be on the top and middle order to ensure they don’t lose wickets regularly, as Hasaranga’s finishing ability – on show on Tuesday – will also be missed.

11 of the 15 wickets fell to spin in the first ODI, with the seamers generally struggling for any control or threat. So, the loss of Agar and Hasaranga is a factor both teams need to overcome, and it will be interesting to see how this one plays out. Can Australia’s seamers find their rhythm or will Sri Lanka put on another good show and be rewarded with victory?

Sri Lanka could replace Hasaranga with Jeffrey Vandersay. If they want to strengthen their batting, Bhanuka Rajapaksa could come in with Dhananjaya de Silva to bowl overs.

Sri Lanka: 1. Danushka Gunathilaka, 2. Pathum Nissanka, 3. Kusal Mendis (wk), 4. Dhananjaya de Silva, 5. Charith Asalanka, 6. Dasun Shanaka (c), 7. Chamika Karunaratne, 8. Dunith Wellalage, 9. Dushmantha Chameera, 10. Jeffrey Vandersay, 11. Maheesh Theekshana

Australia are forced to make two changes. Mitch Swepson could come in for Agar, although left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann has been added to the squad. Also, Cameron Green, Travis Head and Josh Inglis are all options to replace Stoinis, with Green a chance after a century against Sri Lanka A recently.

Australia: 1. David Warner, 2. Aaron Finch (c), 3. Steve Smith, 4. Marnus Labuschagne, 5. Alex Carey (wk), 6. Travis Head/Josh Inglis/Cameron Green, 7. Glenn Maxwell, 8. Pat Cummins, 9. Jhye Richardson, 10. Mitchell Swepson, 11. Josh Hazlewood

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Sri Lanka:

  • Kusal Mendis played an impressive knock in the first ODI (86* off 87 balls). He now has three half-centuries in seven matches vs Australia, with an overall average of 48.33.
  • Pathum Nissanka provided a great start with Danushka Gunathilaka in the opening ODI. The openers combined for a 115-run stand in 118 balls. Nissanka now has three half-centuries to his name in four ODIs at Pallekele.
  • Charith Asalanka looked good for more on Tuesday before mistiming a delivery against Jhye Richardson. Asalanka has five half-centuries in 10 ODIs at home, with 506 runs overall at an average of 50.60 in Sri Lanka.
  • Plenty will be required from Dasun Shanaka in the finishing department with Hasaranga unavailable. After his magnificent knock in the third T20I, Shanaka hit a Labuschagne full toss to long on in the first ODI. He does have an excellent record in ODIs on this ground that Sri Lanka will hope he produces in this match: 8 ODIs, 298 runs, avg. 42.57, SR 113.30.
  • Maheesh Theekshana vs Australia’s openers will be a key battle. He dismissed Warner for a duck in the first ODI.
  • Jeffrey Vandersay took nine wickets in three ODIs against Zimbabwe on this ground earlier this year. Australia represents tougher opposition, but Vandersay can draw on that experience here.

Australia:

  • Glenn Maxwell was truly magnificent in the first match. His statistics against Sri Lanka in ODIs are superb: 7 ODIs, 282 runs, 56.40 average, 154.94 strike rate. Also, expect him to bowl most or all of his quota of overs.
  • Can David Warner bounce back after a rare duck? He has the most runs of any current Australian player against Sri Lanka in ODIs: 18 inns, 624 runs, avg. 34.66, SR 83.08.
  • Aaron Finch is finding his rhythm, and he has taken a particular liking to Dushmantha Chameera. Finch struck a 41-ball 44 in the first ODI, and now gets to avoid Hasaranga in this clash. One to watch.
  • After his half-century on Tuesday, Steve Smith now has four 50+ scores in nine ODI knocks vs Sri Lanka. It was a good outing for Smith – his first in ODIs since the India series in 2020 where he scored two 62-ball hundreds.
  • It was a tough day with bat, ball and in the field for Pat Cummins. However, he should be better for the run. Josh Hazlewood will also be out for a better performance. The seamer, who has been brilliant in T20s since 2021, has taken 94 wickets in 57 ODIs at an average of 25.39 and economy of 4.72.
  • Mitch Swepson, if picked, will be one to watch on a ground where 11 of the 15 wickets fell to spin in the first ODI. It will be a different pitch to the one used on Tuesday, but there should be turn for the wrist-spinner.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-head: Matches 99, Sri Lanka 33, Australia 62, N/R 1.
  • Danushka Gunathilaka struck seven boundaries and had a strike rate of 103.77 in the first ODI. He was looking in superb touch before getting run out.
  • Expect Marnus Labuschagne to get more of a bowl, particularly in the middle overs. He took two wickets in the first ODI.
  • Glenn Maxwell’s scores in ODIs since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic: 77, 1, 108, 45, 63*, 59, and 80*.
  • Cameron Green recently struck 119* in an unofficial ODI against Sri Lanka A.

Pallekele International Stadium Pitch Report and Weather

The pitch for the first match was used in the third T20I, so there was assistance for the spinners. It will be a different surface for this clash, but with traffic on the square over the past week, there is a good chance that spinners will have the greater say once again.

Similar weather conditions are forecast for the second ODI: Humid and cloudy with a chance of thunderstorms throughout the day.

Test batting rankings: Joe Root back at number 1

Cricket News: Test batting rankings: Joe Root back at number 1 | Joe Root overtakes Marnus Labuschagne as the number 1 Test batsman

Joe Root has reclaimed the number one position in the ICC Test batting rankings. Root, who has struck two sublime centuries in as many Tests in England’s series against New Zealand, has overtaken Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne as the world’s number one Test batsman.

It has been a dream 18 months for England’s star player. Since the beginning of 2021, Root has scored an incredible 2,371 runs at an average of 57.3 with 10 centuries. Recently, he became the second England player after Alastair Cook to notch 10,000 Test runs, bringing up the milestone with a memorable century to seal the third-highest successful run chase at Lord’s earlier this month.

Joe Root moves to 897 points in the Test rankings

Labuschagne held the number one position since December 2021, before a relatively quiet series in Pakistan where he scored 170 runs at an average of 34.00 on excellent batting pitches. However, he will get a chance to reclaim the top spot when Australia takes on Sri Lanka in two Tests starting on June 29.

Root will be looking to continue his dream form. His 115* at Lord’s and 176 at Trent Bridge has elevated him to 897 ranking points. England’s number four has another Test against New Zealand to come, as well as a one-off Test against India and three highly-anticipated matches at home to South Africa.

Who are the top 10 in the ICC Test batting rankings?

Four Australians occupy the top 10 spots in the batting rankings. Babar Azam, after his superb series against Australia earlier this year, is in fourth, while the great Virat Kohli finds himself way down in tenth.

IPL window to be two and a half months in next FTP calendar – BCCI

Cricket News: IPL window likely to be two and a half months soon – BCCI | BCCI lays out plans for bigger IPL window in the future

The Indian Premier League (IPL) will have a bigger two-and-a-half-month-long window in the next Future Tours Program (FTP) of the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Jay Shah, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), made the announcement in the aftermath of the highly-anticipated IPL media rights auction. Shah has confirmed that the IPL could consist of 84 and 94 games per season towards the end of the coming cycle that rounds up in 2027.

“That is an aspect we have worked upon. Let me inform you that from the next ICC FTP calendar, IPL will have an official two-and-a-half-month window so that all the top international cricketers can participate. We have had discussions with various boards as well as the ICC,” the BCCI secretary told the Press Trust of India (PTI), as reported by the ESPN Cricinfo.

IPL window could be in two separate phases in a calendar year

The ongoing FTP of the ICC ends with the One Day International (ODI) World Cup that will take place in October-November 2023. The BCCI is considering several alternatives to conduct the long-drawn format of the tournament in the future. There are possibilities of it being staged in two separate phases in a calendar year. Shah assured that discussions are ongoing with several stakeholders over these proposals.

With respect to enhancing the brand value of the IPL, the BCCI secretary explained that the franchises could even play some overseas friendly games in the future. “There are also multiple proposals for all the IPL franchises of playing friendlies overseas. That idea is being seriously contemplated but for that we also need to speak to other boards as we would need to know the schedule of international players,” he opened up on this newfound idea.

“That is an aspect we have worked upon. Let me inform you that from the next ICC FTP calendar, IPL will have an official two-and-a-half-month window so that all the top international cricketers can participate. We have had discussions with various boards as well as the ICC”

Jay Shah

BCCI doesn’t want to compromise international cricket

The BCCI is also working around ensuring that the international calendar isn’t troubled owing to a longer window for the IPL. Shah pointed out at the example of India playing Ireland in a limited-overs series next month and stated that the board is committed to competing even against the smaller nations to help the game grow in such countries.

“All bilateral international commitments across all formats will be honoured. We are playing Ireland in two T20 Internationals this month only. We want a strong robust international circuit and want to help the smaller cricketing nations by playing against them,” Shah was quoted in the aforementioned report.

He added that two separate Indian teams could play international matches in different countries simultaneously. England have done this in recent years, and they will do so again when the ODI team takes on Netherlands this week during the New Zealand Test series. Shah has already held discussions with the National Cricket Academy (NCA) Director VVS Laxman to expand the talent pool and it is important to reiterate that the IPL has and will have a significant role to play in that.

“I have had discussions with NCA [National Cricket Academy] head VVS Laxman and we will always have 50 players in our roster. In future, you will have a scenario, where the Indian Test team will be playing a series in one country and the white-ball team will be engaged in a series in a different country. We are going in that direction where we will have two national teams ready at the same time,” the BCCI secretary signed off.

List of highest successful run chases in Tests at Trent Bridge

Cricket News: List of highest successful run chases in Tests at Trent Bridge | What is the highest successful run chase at Trent Bridge?

Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes helped England pull off a heist on the final day of England’s second Test vs New Zealand. The home team chased down 299 runs on the back of a swashbuckling 136 by Bairstow and an equally incredible support act of 75 unbeaten runs by Stokes.

The feat is even more incredible considering that the average fourth innings score at Trent Bridge is only 161 runs. On that note, Cricblog takes a look at the top five run chases in Tests in Trent Bridge.

Highest run chases in Tests at Trent Bridge

1. England: 299/5 vs New Zealand, 2022

The flavours of England’s terrific style of playing limited-overs cricket was visible in the second half of their chase on Tuesday. They stood at only 93/4 in the 26th over when Tim Southee dismissed Alex Leech for a well-made 44. England went on to score a whopping 206 runs in the next 24.4 overs to emerge victorious in the contest. Both Bairstow and Stokes notched runs at a strike rate of 147.83 and 107.14 respectively to scale a feat that looked quite unlikely at the start of the fifth day of the game.

2. England: 284/6 vs New Zealand, 2004

Interestingly, New Zealand was at the receiving end of another such bashing from England on this ground in 2004. Graham Thorpe was the hero of that game as he scored an unbeaten 104 runs in the fourth innings to take the side home along with a gritty 36-run knock from Ashley Giles. Mark Butcher had played a handy innings of 59 runs to in the initial half of the chase too. However, the Kiwis had an arguably lesser proficient bowling attack at that time as compared to the one this time around!

3. England: 247/2 vs South Africa 1998

Back in 1998, Mike Atherton and Alec Stewart had powered England to take a fancied South African attack, comprising the likes of Jacques Kallis, Allan Donald and Shaun Pollock to task at Trent Bridge with a successful chase of 247. Atherton remained unbeaten at 98 whereas Stewart scored a quickfire 45 to help England win the game against all odds.

Even Nasser Hussian put up a strong fight for his 58 runs off 170 deliveries but it was Stewart who struck nine boundaries to enable England emerge triumphant in the final phase of the chase.

4. West Indies: 209/8 vs ENG, 1980

Who else but the charismatic Caribbeans from back in the days could make it to this list? The Clive Lloyd-led side was given a target of 208 runs by the Englishmen in this very stadium in 1980. Sir Vivian Richards provided a strong start by scoring 48 of the team’s first 69 runs. England saw an opening via his dismissal by Sir Ian Botham but the likes of Desmond Haynes (48), Andy Roberts (22) and Faoud Bacchus (19) put up a spirited performance with the bat to help the West Indies cross over the finishing line in the conTest.

5. England: 189/3 vs AUS, 1977

The fifth-highest fourth-innings chase in this ground was by the English team led by Mike Brearley against Greg Chappell’s Australia in 1977. Having reached to the target at a brisk pace in the 82nd over, England’s win was particularly driven by Brearley and Geoff Boycott’s laudable knocks of 81 and 80 runs respectively. Boycott ensured that he remained not out and saw through the chase for England irrespective of them losing three quick wickets near to the target.
