The Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes era is in full swing. A little over a year after England refused to try chasing 273 in 75 overs against the same opponent, Jonny Bairstow and Stokes masterminded an incredible victory in the second Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge.

It’s time for Bairstow to enjoy his time in the spotlight, especially given he was having a difficult run so far in the series. His 136 will be remembered for a long while to come.

In this Test, New Zealand ammassed 553 and lost. This is the highest ever first innings score New Zealand have made in a defeat and the fourth-largest in Test history. Just over a week ago at Lord’s, England achieved the third-highest chase at the Home of Cricket courtesy of Joe Root’s brilliant hundred. Now, they can enjoy another brilliant win.

Here are the top six biggest first innings scores that ended up in a defeat.

Biggest first innings scores to end up in a Test defeat

Bangladesh 595/8 vs New Zealand, 2017

Shakib Al Hasan (217) and Mushfiqur Rahim (159) plundered the New Zealand bowling attack to all parts of the Basin Reserve. In the process, Bangladesh reached their highest total and were on track to avoiding defeat in New Zealand in any format for the first time.

But, disaster struck after New Zealand responded with 539. The Tigers then lost four quick wickets on the fourth evening, and it didn’t get better from there as they were rolled for 160, similar to the 148 all-out in the famous Fatullah Test of 2006 against Australia.

New Zealand chased down the 217-run target in just 39.4 overs, with Kane Williamson notching 104* off just 90 balls.

Australia 586 vs England, 1894

England’s highest first innings total conceded in a win was way back in 1894. Incredibly, England had to follow on after scoring 325 in response to Australia’s 586 and still managed to win.

Led by Albert Ward’s 117, England struck 437 in their second innings, leaving Australia a target of 177. Robert Peel then took 6/67 to bowl Australia out for 166 in what remains one of Test cricket’s greatest wins.

Pakistan 556 vs England, 2024

Brendon McCullum’s team again. This time in Pakistan in 2024, where they became the first team in history to inflict an innings defeat after conceding over 500 in the first innings.

Harry Brook (317) and Joe Root (262) drove Pakistan into the Multan turf. England ammassed 823/7d to take a lead of 267, and Pakistan were unable to handle the pressure, crumbling in the third innings to be bowled out for 220 on a flat pitch.

Australia 556 vs India, 2003

One of India’s famous Test wins. Just over two years after their miraculous win at Eden Gardens against Australia, India were back producing the goods this time in Adelaide.

India responded to Australia’s 556 with 523 thanks to the duo of Rahul Dravid (233) and VVS Laxman (148) once again. Ajit Agarkar then produced arguably the greatest spell of his career (6/41) to bowl a great Australia team that included Matthew Hayden, Ricky Ponting, Steve Waugh and Adam Gilchrist for just 196, leaving India 230 to win.

Led by Rahul Dravid’s 72, India won with four wickets to spare.

New Zealand 553 vs England, 2022

A win that is written in England cricket’s folklore. Even after New Zealand pummelled 553, England only had a win on their minds. The home side responded with 539 at a run rate of 4.20 that kept the match well and truly alive. From there, they displayed the kind of attacking cricket everyone expected to see under McCullum and Stokes.

It is a far cry from their mindset last year. On that occasion, Kane Williamson gave England a target of 273 in 75 overs. However, England didn’t attempt to chase it down, eventually shaking hands at 170/3 after 70 overs.

England 551/6 vs Australia, 2006

Famous Amazing Adelaide. The late, great Shane Warne masterminded a win for the ages as he pounced on a defensive England on the fifth morning. He and McGrath ripped through England in the second innings to bowl them out for 129, and when Justin Langer belted Matthew Hoggard through midwicket in the first over, Australia’s intentions were clear.

After the joy of Paul Collingwood’s double ton in a score of 551/6, Andrew Flintoff’s team were then never able to recover and eventually lost the 2006/07 Ashes 5-0.

Cricket News: Who won the 2023-27 IPL media rights & how much is it worth? | IPL media rights value for 2023-27 in excess of US$5 billion

The 2023-27 Indian Premier League (IPL) TV and digital media rights have been sold for a whopping US$6.2 billion, a huge jump from the US$2.55 billion forked out by Star India in the 2018-22 cycle.

There were four packages in total for the new cycle:

  • Package A: TV rights for India subcontinent
  • Package B: Digital rights for India subcontinent
  • Package C: Digital rights for India subcontinent for a special bouquet of matches
  • Package D: Rest of the world

There will be two separate broadcasters in the 2023-27 cycle for the subcontinent, while there will be a third for the rest of the world coverage. Disney-Star won the TV rights (Package A) for US$2.7 billion over the five years, and Viacom18 won the digital (Package B) for US$2.37 billion over the same period. Viacom18 also picked up Package C and Times Internet landed Package D.

Andy Kaplan, a former head of Sony’s India media business and US-based media expert said that while the BCCI has maximised value, it will have to work hard to manage two broadcasters.

“Splitting the rights clearly helped the BCCI maximize value. However, the trend around the world is for one broadcaster to control all rights to give the consumer the most flexibility and user experience. It’s ultimately not good for the consumer which has to take on two subscriptions to maximize utility,” he said.

IPL media rights cross US$6 billion for the 2023-27 cycle

IPL 2022 represented a shift towards a bigger IPL, with ten teams competing across 70 league matches plus four finals matches. The 2023-27 cycle now has a total of 370 matches (74 per season), with a whopping US$15.11 million per match in broadcasting fees, making the IPL the second-most valuable sporting competition in the world after the National Football League (NFL).

Package A went for US$7.36 million per match, which was 17.3% higher than the base price of INR 49 crore ($6.3 million approx.) set by the IPL. However, it was in the digital space, i.e. Package B, where the big jump was, with the US$6.41 million per match figure a massive 51.5% higher than the base price of INR 33 crore ($4.2 million approx.).

It was all guns blazing on day one of the media rights E-Auction on Sunday, 12 June. The combined TV and digital rights touched US$13.44 million per match, with Packages A and B confirmed the following day.

In total, the four packages went for a whopping INR 48,390 crore (approx. US$6.2 billion).

IPL now second only to the NFL in broadcasting value

In a clear picture of the IPL’s exponential growth, the league is now second only to the NFL in terms of per match broadcasting fees. According to Forbes, each NFL match is worth approximately US$17 million based on the 10-year rights deal signed in 2022. The IPL is next on US$15.11 million, ahead of the English Premier League and Major Baseball League (both approx. US$11 million).

Sandeep Goyal, chief of advertising firm Rediffusion, predicted that there would be big competition for the IPL rights.

“For media companies, sports rights are always considered to be the engine while everything else is like bogies of the train,” said Goyal before the e-Auction. “The ascendancy of the media companies and groups is in many ways dictated by whether they have the IPL rights. For instance, for the years that Star India had the rights, they outdistanced all competitors by many more miles. Similar was the case with Sony.”

The IPL’s growth in numbers since its inception

Ahead of the first season of IPL in 2008, the BCCI sold all eight franchises for a total of approximately Rs 2900 crore (approx. US$387 million). Also, the first media rights deal was ten years in length totalling US$1.1 billion. This then more-than-doubled to US$2.55 billion for a five-year cycle between 2018 and 2022 as the value and popularity of the IPL skyrocketed.

Now, it’s doubled again to US$5.1 billion and who knows where the competition will be by the time the next cycle comes around. One thing is for certain, the media companies will be hoping for great return on such a big but potentially very worthwhile investment.

The Protea Fire is burning hot right now, with South Africa continuing their promising rise in T20I cricket with another terrific performance. After Rassie van der Dussen and David Miller produced the goods in Delhi, Heinrich Klaasen, who came in for the injured Quinton de Kock, produced a masterclass on a tricky Cuttack pitch to hand South Africa a 2-0 series lead.

It was another sign of South Africa’s growing belief. Ahead of the series, Temba Bavuma spoke of the positive mood in the camp both on and off the field, and it is showing in their performances as the Proteas have now won 15 of their past 17 T20Is since their heavy defeat to West Indies a year ago. Now, it’s time to complete the job in India, with an unassailable 3-0 series lead right there for South Africa to grab.

It’s the kind of pressure that could serve the home team well. As questions continue to be asked about Rishabh Pant’s captaincy, a number of the players need to take greater responsibility for their performances. Also, the ineffectiveness of the bowling attack under pressure in the first two matches – apart from Bhuvneshwar Kumar – may prompt a change in personnel, but it remains to be seen if India select the uncapped Umran Malik and/or Arshdeep Singh in a do-or-die clash.

Or could it spur them on? Possibly. Both Malik and Arshdeep form a key part of India’s uncapped talent pool, and such an occasion can bring the best out of them. For that to happen no matter the bowling personnel, the batsmen will be out for a repeat of Delhi rather than the struggle of Cuttack.

  • Ishan Kishan is an almost must-pick in a fantasy XI. The left-hander has struck scores of 45, 51, 6, 43, 48, 76 and 34 in his past seven knocks. He is the top run-scorer this series with 110 at a strike rate of 159.42.
  • Shreyas Iyer’s last seven scores in T20Is: 25 (20), 25 (16), 57* (28), 74* (44), 73* (45), 36 (27) and 40 (35).
  • Eyes will be on Hardik Pandya and Dinesh Karthik in the finishing department. Hardik struck 31* off 12 balls in the first T20I, and Karthik helped India reach a competitive score in the second with 30* off 21 balls.
  • Dinesh Karthik had the best strike rate of any player with at least 300 runs in the recent IPL (183.33).
  • Bhuvneshwar Kumar is looking in irresistible touch. The seamer is the leading wicket-taker this series (5), four of which have come in the powerplay.
  • Also, Bhuvneshwar has experience bowling on this ground. He has taken six wickets in as many matches at Visakhapatnam at an economy of 7.05.
  • Harshal Patel will be tasked with limiting South Africa’s momentum at the backend of the innings. He has taken 51 wickets in the past two IPL seasons and two in two matches in this series.

South Africa:

  • What a knock it was by Heinrich Klaasen in Cuttack (81 off 46). He has a very favourable record against Yuzvendra Chahal: 25 balls faced, 71 runs scored, no dismissals, strike rate: 284.
  • David Miller is having a dream year. He has been dismissed just twice when chasing since the beginning of IPL 2022. He struck 320 runs at a strike rate above 150 (two dismissals) when batting second in the IPL and is yet to be dismissed this series (64* off 31 and 20* off 15).
  • Rassie van der Dussen will be key for the Proteas in the absence of Aiden Markram and potential absence of Quinton de Kock. In 25 T20I innings since the 2019 ODI World Cup, van der Dussen has struck 756 runs at an average of 42.00 and strike rate of 142.64.
  • Kagiso Rabada has just the one wicket so far this series, but his economy rate of 6.25 is priceless for South Africa. He will be key both upfront and at the death as he was in the recent IPL where he took the most wickets by any seamer (23).
  • Anrich Nortje is South Africa’s leading wicket-taker this series (3), with two coming at the death. The other was the crucial wicket of Ishan Kishan in the 7th over at Cuttack.
  • Dwaine Pretorius is conceding an expensive 10.71 per over, but he could offer value with bat and ball today. He is being used as a pinch-hitter, and it came off in the first match where he scored 29 off 13 balls.

  • Hazratullah Zazai has already racked up 800 runs in 24 T20Is so far. He has average of 36.36 whilst striking at a rate of 148.42 in the shortest format of the international game.
  • Zazai has smashed scores of 45 and 27 this series at a strike rate of 187.17.
  • Najibullah Zadran fancies playing against Zimbabwe. He has featured in all but one of Afghanistan’s T20Is against them. Zadran has notched 323 runs at an average and strike rate of 46.14 and 150.93 respectively in these games.
  • Rashid Khan’s impressive batting prowess hasn’t been optimised by the Afghans so far. He has batted at number eight or below in 25 out of his 30 T20I innings so far. With the ball, Rashid has taken three wickets in this series at an economy rate of just 6.62.
  • Karim Janat’s only T20I half-century has come against Zimbabwe. He had scored 53 runs when the two sides faced off each other at Abu Dhabi in March 2021.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has become the second-most lucrative sports product after the NFL in a day of intense bidding at the IPL media rights E-auction on Sunday.

The value of a single game is now US$13.44 million, which may yet increase as bidding is set to continue this week. Only the NFL (US$35.07 million) is higher in world sport, with a game of IPL now more valuable than a game in the English Premier League (EPL). As per the figures in the 2022-25 cycle, the EPL is valued at US$11.34 million per match.

IPL media rights value: Lucrative T20 tournament reaches new heights

Heading into the E-Auction, the general consensus was that the media rights could cross the US$5 billion mark. According to Cricbuzz, after the first day, the combined sum bid stood at approximately US$5.5 billion (INR43,050 crore), already a 140% increase than the US$2.55 billion Star India forked out for the 2018-2022 IPL rights.

Bidders Disney-Star, Sony, Viacom-Reliance, Zee, Fun Asia, Super Sport and Times Internet showed no signs of budging. Bidding will resume with little idea of just how large the IPL media rights package will be for the 2023-27 cycle.

“We are very happy with the day’s proceedings,” said IPL chairman Brijesh Patel to Cricbuzz. Each of the ten franchises will hold similar views as their share from the central revenue pool is set to exceed Rs 400 crore (approx. US$51.14 million). During IPL 2022, seven of the ten franchises were valued at US$1 billion or more, and the IPL media rights will be another big boost to their respective values.

Bidding began for Package A (television rights) and Package B (digital rights) at base prices of Rs 49 crore (US$6.3m) and Rs 33 crore (US$4.2m) per match respectively. The highest bid for Package A on was INR 57 crore (USD 7.29 million), 16.3% higher than the base price set. The highest bid for Package B was INR 48 crore (USD 6.14 million), a huge 45.4% higher than the base price.

South Africa, who continue to show plenty of promise in T20I cricket, are aiming for a 2-0 series lead, while India have the challenge of bouncing back after failing to defend a 200+ score in Delhi.

Indeed, it is the Proteas’ belief that is standing out. Temba Bavuma’s team were terribly unlucky to miss out on the Semi Finals of last year’s World Cup, and they have continued to build on that effort since. They have a number of players in form, most notably David Miller, whose 2022 gets better and better. He and Rassie van der Dussen will be key again, after the two showed how brilliant they can be in the middle and death for the Proteas.

For India, we got a taste of life without Rohit, Virat and KL Rahul. Their approach in the opening T20I was good to see, with the top order laying a quick platform for the likes of Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya to play with total freedom. However, on the day where the next IPL broadcasting rights could go for upwards of US$6 billion, the spotlight will be on their bowling and fielding as they seek a response to level up the series.

  • Shreyas Iyer has looked in good touch at number three for India. He has struck 57*, 73*, 74* and 36 in that position in T20Is this year, and he looked particularly strong against spin in the first T20I.
  • Hardik Pandya took 3/29 in the last T20I at Cuttack, back in 2017. He comes into this match off the back of a brilliant 12-ball 31* and successful reign as captain for Gujarat in the IPL.
  • Hardik’s battle with Rabada could make for interesting viewing. Pandya has struck 60 runs off 40 balls and has been dismissed twice by the Protea quick. Against Nortje, it is 25 off 14 balls with one dismissal.
  • Dinesh Karthik will be itching to get a decent batting opportunity. He recently struck 330 runs at a strike rate of 183.33 in a memorable IPL 2022 campaign.
  • Bhuvneshwar Kumar has taken the second-most wickets in IND-SA T20Is (9). He dismissed Temba Bavuma in the first T20I, and has dismissed de Kock once in seven deliveries in T20 Internationals.
  • Yuzvendra Chahal recently took the most wickets by a spinner in a single IPL season. However, he has taken just one wicket in his past four T20s. Can he turn this around?

South Africa:

  • David Miller is in arguably career-best form, especially when chasing. Before his brilliant 31-ball 64* in the opening match, Miller belted 320 runs when chasing in the IPL at a strike rate above 150 with just two dismissals.
  • Rassie van der Dussen was also excellent in the first T20I, displaying some of his key tips to batting in the middle order in T20s. In 24 T20I innings since the 2019 ODI World Cup, van der Dussen has struck 755 runs at an average of 44.41 and strike rate of 144.36.
  • Quinton de Kock has struck two half-centuries in four T20Is vs India. He will be aiming for another here after notching 508 runs in the recent IPL.
  • Dwaine Pretorius recently spoke of MS Dhoni’s incredible influence, and he displayed some of that in the first T20I. He dismissed Shreyas Iyer and struck an important 13-ball 29. He could be used as a pinch-hitter once again.

And how right he is. Sri Lanka once again showcased their bowling potential, led by the excellent Hasaranga who took 4/33. However, there simply aren’t enough runs to play with at the moment. The move to Pallekele may help as the surface in Kandy is often a beauty to bat on, so Dasun Shanaka’s team need to get going with the bat. If they do, they are every chance of picking up a confidence-boosting victory as they have won just two of their past 14 T20Is.

That being said, Australia will also be looking for some improvement as the middle order crumbled against spin after Aaron Finch and David Warner got the job done in the first T20I. While various players will be after some improvement, attention is still focused on Steve Smith, who has received further backing from management regarding his role in the T20I team. If he can make a contribution here along with another solid bowling effort by the attack, it will represent another strong outing for the current T20 world champions.
