Rewind the clock back 15 years.

Whenever one wished to discuss cricket, it would have had to be physically with another person, whether in person or over the Nokia (remember the Nokia?) phone. Now, views can be shared far and wide, in front of the eyes of thousands (sometimes millions).

The content ranges from general shitposting to some quality insights. Here, we have more of the former, which I love. With the IPL Auction generating so many talking points, fans on social were always going to have their say.

Below are some of the best and funniest takes from the Auction:

The record-breaker.

Pat Cummins became the most expensive foreign player in IPL history.

Does he have Mitchell Starc, who chose to opt out, to thank for that? That’s perhaps a debate for another day.

BBL09 Match 6: ST vs AS Preview Dream11 Possible Playing 11 Pitch Report

BBL09 Match 6: ST vs AS Preview Dream11 Possible Playing 11 Pitch Report | BBL09 Match Prediction Today | Sydney Thunder vs Adelaide Strikers Prediction Today | Sydney Thunder vs Adelaide Strikers Key Players | ST vs AS Dream11 Prediction

The second consecutive day of double-header BBL action involves the men in green once again.

Sydney Thunder play their third game in just the fifth day of BBL09. With two wins under their belt already, the scheduling now plays into their favour, with a chance now to keep the momentum going.

Similar to India vs South Africa in the 2019 World Cup, Adelaide Strikers play their first game against a side playing their third. It was a poor season for the Strikers in BBL08 after winning the Title a year earlier, so can they start the tournament off with a win?

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

  • Chris Morris is in the Thunder squad for this match, and could make his debut. His recent MSL form wasn’t too great, but he can offer the Thunder value if on his best form.
  • Usman Khawaja’s axing from the Australia ODI squad left him disappointed, but he looks determined. He is coming off 66 vs Melbourne Renegades.
  • Alex Hales and Callum Ferguson round up an important top three for the Thunder. Hales is also in good touch after slamming 66 (38) vs Renegades.
  • Alex Carey is a player to watch in BBL09. His scores in his three games against Thunder: 44 (26), 34 (28) and 59 (40).
  • Daniel Sams has been expensive, but has four wickets to his name.
  • Phil Salt, who is likely to make his BBL debut, scored 406 runs at a SR of 161.11 in the 2019 Vitality T20 Blast.
  • Jono Wells was one of the Strikers’ shining lights last season: 359 runs at average of 44.87.
  • Rashid Khan enjoys playing the Thunder. His performances against them: 2/22, 2/21, 2/34 and 2/21. Also, Peter Siddle enjoys playing the Thunder: Seven wickets in three innings.
  • Arjun Nair has taken two wickets in each of the first two games. He took 3/12 in the last meeting vs Strikers.

Head-to-Head

  • Matches: 10, Thunder: 4, Strikers: 6.
  • Strikers have won four of the past five vs Thunder. The match they lost was the most recent, bowled out for 91.

Key to a Sydney Thunder win

Each of the Sydney Thunder big guns have performed with the bat so far. It was Callum Ferguson first up, followed by Usman Khawaja and Alex Hales. Can at least two of the three go big in Canberra to hold the Thunder in good stead once again?

Also, the slower nature of the Canberra pitch can suit the Thunder’s battery of spinners. Also, with Chris Morris and Daniel Sams keen on bowling the cutters, the Thunder can look to stifle the Strikers’ scoring rate with pace off the ball.

Key to an Adelaide Strikers win

The Strikers really struggled to take wickets in BBL08. Teams are now more cautious against Rashid Khan, which puts onus on his bowling teammates to build more pressure so he can pounce. With the likes of Harry Conway, Peter Siddle and Billy Stanlake in the pace department, can the Strikers dismantle the Thunder top order?

Also, how will Alex Carey go? Picked up as an excellent value-for-money buy by Delhi Capitals in the IPL, Carey has the ability to score rapidly through beautiful cricket shots. He has a good record against the Thunder, and needs to set the tone for a team that also includes the experience of Phil Salt, Cameron White and Jono Wells.

BBL09 Match 6: ST vs AS Dream11 – Big game for Alex Carey.

Possible Playing 11

Chris Morris is in the 13-man squad for the Thunder. He could replace Nathan McAndrew, despite McAndrew’s honest efforts so far in BBL09.

Sydney Thunder: 1. Alex Hales, 2. Usman Khawaja, 3. Callum Ferguson (c), 4. Matthew Gilkes (wk), 5. Alex Ross, 6. Daniel Sams, 7. Chris Morris, 8. Chris Green, 9. Arjun Nair, 10. Chris Tremain, 11. Jono Cook

Adelaide Strikers could field three club debutants. Phil Salt, Cameron White and Harry Conway are all named in the 13-man squad.

Adelaide Strikers: 1. Alex Carey (c & wk), 2. Jake Weatherald, 3. Phil Salt, 4. Cameron White, 5. Jono Wells, 6. Matthew Short, 7. Cameron Valente, 8. Rashid Khan, 9. Peter Siddle, 10. Harry Conway, 11. Billy Stanlake

Pitch and Conditions

Very hot conditions are forecast for Canberra (maximum of 41 degrees). Also, there is expected to be some smoke haze from the bushfires engulfing New South Wales. In regards to the pitch, it is typically a slower-paced track in Canberra – spinners and seamers who bowl cutters could be in the game.

IPL 2020 Auction: 7 Best Value Buys of the Auction

IPL 2020 Auction: 7 Best Value Buys of the Auction | Best Buys of the IPL 2020 Auction | Which teams made the best buys in IPL Auction 2020?

Written by Robin Rounder and Charbel Coorey

So, an action-packed IPL 2020 Auction is done and dusted. There were many unexpected buys, with some unbelievably high prices to boot.

Fans had their say on Twitter as Pat Cummins, who, at 15.5 CR, became the most expensive foreign player in IPL history. As RCB and DC battled it out for Cummins, KKR swooped in and had their man. It was also a great outing for Glenn Maxwell (10.75 CR) and Chris Morris (10 CR), who rounded out the top three most expensive players.

However, it wasn’t all about huge spending. The IPL 2020 Auction served up some excellent value-for-money purchases, and here we take a look at seven.

7. Alex Carey

Delhi Capitals bought Alex Carey for 2.4 Cr, which is a very good deal considering that he is a very talented T20 batsman.

He opens for Adelaide Strikers in the BBL and is very good at the top of the order. He has scored 772 runs from 24 innings including a century.

The only problem for DC is where they play him as they already have a number of players for the top order. Could Carey be a fine finisher?

IPL 2020 Auction: 7 Best Value Buys of the Auction | Best Buys of the IPL 2020 Auction | Which teams made the best buys in IPL Auction 2020?

6. Chris Green

Much was made about the huge money KKR paid for Pat Cummins. However, they did display some good business in picking up Chris Green at his base price (just Rs.20 Lacs).

It is a very decent buy considering the value he brings to the team. Chris Green is a T20 globetrotter and has a knack of picking wickets with the new ball. To go with that, he is a very handy batsman down the order.

IPL 2020 Auction: Chris Green is an excellent value-for-money option.

5. Josh Philippe

Whether RCB have solved their death bowling issues remains to be seen. However, they did pick up an excellent value-for-money purchase in Josh Philippe for his base price (Rs.20 Lacs).

Philippe has already lit up BBL09 after showing plenty of promise in BBL08. With such great talent at such a low price, RCB could get significant value from Philippe in IPL 2020.

IPL 2020 Auction: Josh Philippe can prove to be an excellent buy.

4. Chris Jordan

Chris Jordan is underrated. A bowler who has improved markedly over the past 18-24 months, Jordan has proven to be a fine option for any T20 team (England included) in the crunch (powerplay and death) overs.

So, KXIP picking Jordan up for 3 Crore is a fine result when you consider the likes of Nathan Coulter-Nile and Chris Morris went for 8 and 10 Crore respectively.

IPL 2020 Auction: 7 Best Value Buys of the Auction | Best Buys of the IPL 2020 Auction | Which teams made the best buys in IPL Auction 2020?

3. James Neesham

Jimmy Neesham is not only king of social media. He is also a handy cricketer, and to pick him up for just Rs.50 Lacs is an excellent result for KXIP.

Neesham represents an excellent replacement for the likes of David Miller and Sam Curran. Importantly, he can star with both bat and ball, particularly at the death.

2. Tom Banton

Purchased for 1 Crore. 1 Crore!

The latest sensation in the cricketing community; Tom Banton, is another steal for KKR. “The young KP” is a perfect replacement for Chris Lynn at a significantly lower price.

Banton is an explosive opener and made his name after the recently concluded English T20 Blast. He scored 549 runs including four fifties and one century at a strike rate of 161.47. At 1 Crore, this really is a steal-deal for KKR, and can further enhance his reputation in IPL 2020.

KKR: Winners of the IPL 2020 Auction?

1. Chris Lynn

Many may have expected Chris Lynn to go over 5 Crore, given his hitting abilities. However, Mumbai Indians picked him up for only 2 Crore, which is arguably the biggest steal in this Auction.

We all know what he can do on his day, and he can be devastating on the Wankhede track. And, he knows it, too!

IPL 2020 Auction: 7 Best Value Buys of the Auction | Best Buys of the IPL 2020 Auction | Which teams made the best buys in IPL Auction 2020?

BBL09 Match 5: BH vs MS Preview Dream11 Possible Playing 11 Pitch Report|BBL09 Match Prediction Today|Brisbane Heat vs Melbourne Stars Prediction Today|Brisbane Heat vs Melbourne Key Players|BH vs MS Dream11 Prediction

Two of the favourites for the BBL09 Title descend on the Gold Coast for an important game early in the new season.

Brisbane Heat, coming off a disappointing first-up loss to Sydney Thunder, need to kickstart their campaign. Their batting approach left plenty to be desired, often getting a dot, boundary or out with nothing in-between.

For Melbourne Stars, we’ll see whether they have moved well beyond their choke in the BBL08 Final. Their squad looks strong again, but will they fire? Indeed, the Heat in Gold Coast will be a good test first up.

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

  • Marcus Stoinis had a BBL08 campaign to remember. He finished third in the run-scoring charts with 533 at 53.30. He also took 14 wickets at an average of 16.14.
  • Also, Stoinis has the most runs in Heat-Stars matches (246).
  • Chris Lynn, purchased by MI in the IPL Auction, will be out for a game. He is second in most runs in Heat-Stars matches with 216.
  • Ben Cutting loves playing the Stars. He has 178 runs against them at a strike rate of 191.40, and Tom Banton is a dangerous player.
  • Cutting and Max Bryant blew the Stars away in their last meeting.
  • Glenn Maxwell’s last four innings vs Heat: 8 (5), 50 (30), 3 (4), 5 (3). Due for a big one?
  • Nic Maddinson has been in superb form in FC cricket. His last seven scores: 224, 37, 37, 28, 69, 22, 59.
  • Mitch Swepson (10) has the most wickets in Heat-Stars games. His economy rate is just 5.70 against them.
  • Josh Lalor, who took 20 wickets in BBL08, has seven wickets against the Stars in four matches.
  • Nathan Coulter-Nile: last five List A games: 3/47, 2/59, 2/60, 5/48, 3/47.

Head-to-Head

  • Matches: 10, Heat: 7, Stars: 3.
  • Last meeting: Brisbane Heat chased down 157 in 10 overs without the loss of a wicket at the Gabba.
  • Brisbane Heat lost both their games at Gold Coast in BBL08.

Key to a Brisbane Heat win

The Heat’s approach against the Thunder left plenty to be desired. There was no commitment to rotating the strike effectively, rather focusing on hitting every ball for a maximum. It did seem they believed in their own hype, which is something to avoid today. Can their big hitters string together some partnerships?

Also, can their bowlers keep the pressure on the opposition? The Heat made a great start against the Thunder, taking three in the powerplay, but then fell away. The likes of Marcus Stoinis, Peter Handscomb and Glenn Maxwell will be key, so can the Heat cut off the Stars’ main supply at the source?

BBL09 Match 5: BH vs MS: Ben Cutting has a solid record vs Melbourne Stars.

Key to a Melbourne Stars win

Marcus Stoinis’ BBL08 campaign was magnificent. Opening the batting, Stoinis remains just as important in BBL09, with a capable list of players to follow. The priority for the Stars first up would be to win each stage of their batting innings en route to a solid total.

Also, can their mix of leg-spinners and wily seamers disrupt the Heat’s power game? Early wickets, just like the Thunder took against the Heat, will be key for the Stars in stifling the Heat’s progress. Then, regular wickets can help get a foothold in the game as the Heat look for momentum.

Brisbane Heat have retained the same squad of players that lost to Sydney Thunder. They could go with the same XI again.

Brisbane Heat: 1. Tom Banton (wk), 2. Max Bryant, 3. Chris Lynn (c), 4. Matt Renshaw, 5. Sam Heazlett, 6. Ben Cutting, 7. Mark Steketee, 8. Josh Lalor, 9. Mitch Swepson, 10. Ben Laughlin, 11. Zahir Khan

Melbourne Stars have picked their 13-man squad for their opening game of BBL09.

Melbourne Stars: 1. Ben Dunk, 2. Marcus Stoinis, 3. Peter Handscomb (wk), 4. Glenn Maxwell (c), 5. Nic Maddinson, 6. Hilton Cartwright, 7. Nathan Coulter-Nile, 8. Haris Rauf, 9. Daniel Worrall, 10. Sandeep Lamichhanne, 11. Adam Zampa

Pitch and Conditions

No rain is forecast for the Gold Coast in this clash. Also, the drop-in pitch typically plays quite well, as seen in the BBL last year.

BBL09 Match 4: HH vs SS Preview Dream11 Prediction Possible Playing 11 Pitch Report | BBL09 Match Prediction Today | Hobart Hurricanes vs Sydney Sixers Prediction Today | Hobart Hurricanes vs Sydney Sixers Key Players | HH vs SS Dream11 Prediction

The first day game of BBL09 serves up a delicious-looking menu in central Australia. If the result is as good as its potential, we could really be in for a cracker.

Hobart Hurricanes, BBL08’s most consistent team, begin their campaign against a side that showed plenty of great signs mid-week. However, they fell away at the back end of last season, and it remains to be seen how they go without Matthew Wade and Jofra Archer.

Sydney Sixers, led by the bowlers and the superb Josh Philippe, swept aside Perth Scorchers. If there was one negative of the Sixers’ BBL08 season, it was their inability to put good performances together consecutively. Can they do so here against Hobart?

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

  • How can you look past the openers from each side? D’Arcy Short has been leading run-scorer in each of the past two BBL seasons. Josh Philippe was out of this world against Perth Scorchers. What a battle this could be.
  • Also, Philippe scored 86* (49) in Sixers’ last meeting vs Hurricanes. James Vince scored 74* (50) in the same game.
  • George Bailey (210) and D’Arcy Short (199) have the most runs in Hurricanes-Sixers matches. They average 52.50 and 49.75 respectively vs the Sixers.
  • Sean Abbott (9) has the most wickets in Hurricanes-Sixers matches.
  • However, the slower pitch in Alice Springs could bring the spinners into the game. Ben Manenti, Steve O’Keefe and Qais Ahmed can be key players in the match.
  • Also, James Faulkner can be effective with his slower balls

Head-to-Head:

  • Matches: 10, Hobart Hurricanes 5, Sydney Sixers 5.

Key to a Hobart Hurricanes win

Will the departure of Jofra Archer prove fatal for Hobart? Time will tell, but onus is on their inexperienced seam attack to lead the way against a potentially dangerous Sixers lineup. Importantly, a platform needs to be set for the spinners – particularly Qais Ahmed – to perform well.

Also, eyes will be on D’Arcy Short. Leading run-scorer in each of the last two BBL seasons, Short has provided many-a-great start for the Hurricanes. With Matt Wade missing, it is important Short does so again to set a platform for the likes of Ben McDermott, George Bailey and David Miller.

BBL09 Match 4: HH vs SS Dream11: Short to make a strong start?

Key to a Sydney Sixers win

Can the Sixers top order back up their blistering showing against Perth Scorchers? Led by Josh Philippe, the Sixers made 131 look like child’s play. However, the challenge will be to repeat the good work again, with the likes of Daniel Hughes, James Vince and Moises Henriques also needing to show their experience.

Also, can the Sixers produce the goods on what could be a slowish Alice Springs track? D’Arcy Short will be a huge wicket up front, and if they can get him early, they will be sure to ask questions of a Hurricanes middle order that did often go untested in BBL08.

Sydney Sixers have made one change to their 13-man squad. Jack Edwards is out, with Lloyd Pope coming in. Whether Pope lines up in the XI remains to be seen.

Sydney Sixers: 1. Daniel Hughes, 2. Josh Philippe (wk), 3. James Vince, 4. Moises Henriques, 5. Jordan Silk, 6. Hayden Kerr, 7. Tom Curran, 8. Sean Abbott, 9. Ben Dwarshuis, 10. Steve O’Keefe, 11. Ben Manenti

READ: Thunder vs Renegades Preview and Dream11: January 15 2020

It’s time for the defending champions. And the team who has already played a game in BBL09.

Melbourne Renegades, off the back of their first ever Title, begin their campaign against a Sydney Thunder side with a win under their belt. The excellent Renegades squad is a serious contender for the BBL09 Title, but can they make a good start to their campaign?

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

  • Callum Ferguson was outstanding against Brisbane Heat. His 72* rescued the Thunder from a precarious spot.
  • Also, Ferguson has scored 80 runs in two innings for the Thunder vs Melbourne Renegades, including one fifty (52).
  • Aaron Finch has the most runs in Renegades-Thunder matches: 247 (average 35.29).
  • Usman Khawaja vs Renegades: 148 runs at an average of 44.00.
  • Shaun Marsh joins the Melbourne Renegades. His BBL record reads: 37 matches, 1,435 runs, SR: 129.98.
  • Kane Richardson has the most wickets in Renegades-Thunder matches: 9.
  • Jono Cook took two wickets in the opening game, along with two vs the Renegades in their last meeting.
  • Daniel Christian has a T20 five wicket haul against the Thunder.

READ: Thunder vs Renegades Preview and Dream11: January 15 2020

Head-to-Head

  • Melbourne Renegades have won eight of the last nine matches vs Sydney Thunder.
  • However, the Renegades lost both matches at Geelong last year quite heavily (scores of 126/9 and 91).

Key to a Melbourne Renegades win

The Renegades look to have an excellent squad in BBL09. This is even with the experienced Mohammad Nabi and Marcus Harris missing for the first game, with the likes of Aaron Finch, Shaun Marsh and Sam Harper out to set a platform for Tom Cooper and Dan Christian.

Also, Kane Richardson loves playing the Thunder, and will be keen for a big start to the tournament. With the experience of Harry Gurney, Richard Gleeson, Cameron Boyce and Dan Christian alongside him, the Renegades can look to put the squeeze on a dangerous Thunder top order.

The Thunder top four looks crucial to their chances. The experience of Alex Hales, Usman Khawaja and Callum Ferguson needs to come to the fore, with at least one of the three needed to play a significant knock, as Ferguson did in game one.

Also, can the Thunder spinners work their magic again? Chris Green, Arjun Nair and Jono Cook combined for six wickets in Brisbane on Tuesday night, so the key will be for them to dry up the runs again. Can the spinners build dots of which the seamers can try build on with wickets?

They have never lost five straight ODIs at home, so West Indies have a shot at history. Led by Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer, the Windies put on a clinic on a turning track in Chennai, and have the chance to finish 2019 on a high with an ODI series win in India.

Chasing team to win?

West Indies enjoyed chasing last time out, and India have an excellent record when chasing. Also, when you consider the team batting first has won just one of the last six matches on this ground, the trend could continue.

BBL09 makes its first stop in Sydney, as one of last season’s overachievers play undoubtedly the biggest underachievers.

Sydney Sixers were tipped by many to miss out on the playoffs. However, they found form throughout the season to reach the business end of the season, only to fall at the Semi Final hurdle.

Their opponents, Perth Scorchers, missed the playoffs for the first time in BBL history, finishing last in a forgettable season. The loss of Michael Klinger, Shaun Marsh and Nathan Coulter-Nile in particular leave a hole, but the talent is there for the Scorchers to have a better season this time.

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

  • Moises Henriques (290) has the most runs in Sixers vs Scorchers matches.
  • Daniel Hughes (62) and Jordan Silk (67) starred in the corresponding fixture last season. Hughes was superb in the recent Marsh Cup.
  • Steve O’Keefe (3/19) and Sean Abbott (3/29) shared six wickets between them vs Scorchers at SCG in BBL08.
  • Cameron Bancroft (87) and Ashton Turner (60 off 30) enjoyed playing the Sixers in the last match between the teams.
  • James Vince was strong in BBL08: 8 matches, 269 runs, average: 44.83, SR: 136.55.
  • Chris Jordan took seven wickets in four matches for England in their recent T20I series vs New Zealand.
  • Liam Livingstone is a dangerous T20 player, but needs to build on recent T20 starts: 25, 39, 8, 27, 8, 10.
  • Head-to-Head: Sixers 4, Scorchers 10. In Sydney, Scorchers lead 5-3.

Key to a Sydney Sixers win

Daniel Hughes recently finished the Marsh Cup, Australia’s domestic One-Day competition, as the leading run-scorer. He, along with the very talented Josh Phillipe, James Vince and Moises Henriques represents a top four that can dominate any BBL attack on their day.

Also, the Sixers’ attack contains a number of seasoned performers, but can they hit their stride right away? Sean Abbott and Steve O’Keefe have been consistent performers in BBL cricket, and when you add Tom Curran, who was superb in BBL08, the Sixers have a strong bowling platform.

BBL09 Match 2: SS vs PS: Can Abbott celebrate his Australian selection with wickets?

Key to a Perth Scorchers

The Scorchers’ inconsistent batting in BBL08 was a big reason they finished bottom. The loss of Klinger and S. Marsh can be difficult to replace, which places onus on the likes of Cameron Bancroft and Mitchell Marsh to set a platform at the top. With Ashton Turner and Liam Livingstone dangerous propositions, a strong start can hold the Scorchers in good stead.

Also, how well will the Scorchers attack fare in the first game? Possessing a strong mix of pace and spin, the Scorchers will be out to get the better of the Sixers’ top order, of whom a lot depends on. Then, with the likes of Matt Kelly and Chris Jordan, the Scorchers have strong assets for the death overs.

Possible Playing 11

Sydney Sixers have named a 13-man squad for this clash.

Sydney Sixers: 1. Daniel Hughes, 2. Josh Phillipe (wk), 3. James Vince, 4. Moises Henriques (c), 5. Jordan Silk, 6. Jack Edwards, 7. Tom Curran, 8. Sean Abbott, 9. Steve O’Keefe, 10. Ben Dwarshuis, 11. Ben Manenti

Perth Scorchers have also named their 13-man squad for the match. Liam Livingstone, Chris Jordan and Fawad Ahmed are set to make their Scorchers debut. Cameron Green has been in superb batting form for Western Australia, and could line up despite not being able to bowl.

Also, Andrew Tye and Jason Behrendhorff are out with injury.

Perth Scorchers: 1. Cameron Bancroft (wk), 2. Josh Inglis, 3. Mitchell Marsh (c), 4. Ashton Turner, 5. Liam Livingstone, 6. Cameron Green, 7. Ashton Agar, 8. Chris Jordan, 9. Matt Kelly, 10. Jhye Richardson, 11. Fawad Ahmed

Pitch and Conditions

Air quality is expected to be poor for Sydney on Wednesday, due to smoke from the bushfires that have engulfed the state of New South Wales over the last several weeks.

In relation to the pitch, the SCG track is typically slower, providing value to bowlers who take the pace off.

READ: January 6 2020: Thunder vs Heat Preview Preview and Dream11 Prediction

Just like that, another year has passed and the ninth edition of the Big Bash League is about to begin.

The 2010-2019 decade – about to end – saw the birth of the BBL and a significant change in the Australian summer landscape. It all kicks off again as Brisbane Heat and Sydney Thunder, both BBL underachievers despite one Title each, kick off the season at the Gabba.

READ: January 6 2020: Thunder vs Heat Preview Preview and Dream11 Prediction

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

  • Chris Lynn has four 50+ scores in his past six T20 innings. Also, he loves Sydney Thunder, scoring 427 runs against them in nine games at an average of 71.17 and strike rate of 175.00.
  • Tom Banton is also one to watch. He is coming off a very successful T20 Blast campaign, scoring 549 runs at a strike rate of 161.47.
  • Usman Khawaja is out with a point to prove at his home ground in domestic cricket. He has 87 runs in three games vs the Heat, with starts a key feature he needs to build on.
  • Callum Ferguson is coming off 70 (55) in a trial game vs the Sixers. Usman Khawaja scored 66 and Arjun Nair scored 42 and took 3/25.
  • Alex Hales lands in Australia having scored 97 off 55 balls in the Mzansi Super League.
  • All-rounders Daniel Sams and Ben Cutting can provide excellent value with both bat and ball.
  • Josh Lalor finished fourth in the BBL08 wicket-taking chart with 20.

Key to a Brisbane Heat win

The power in the Brisbane Heat lineup is scary. The much-anticipated debut of Tom Banton is upon us, and how quickly he can make an impact will be interesting to see. With Max Bryant, Ben Cutting and Chris Lynn also powerful hitters, the Heat will be out to push the Thunder onto the back foot early, of which the middle order, if needed, can build on.

However, can the Heat bowling withstand the pressure? Much like RCB in the IPL, the Heat’s bowling has often let them down despite their batsmen hitting big. Ben Laughlin, BBL’s all-time wicket-taker, will be out to take wickets in the crunch overs, along with the likes of Josh Lalor and the spinners keeping the Thunder batsmen quiet.

BBL09 Match 1 BH vs ST Preview Dream11 – Can Chris Lynn start strongly?

Key to a Sydney Thunder win

Shane Watson, who starred at the Gabba last season, is no longer at the helm. This is a worry for the Thunder, who often relied on Watson for his experience. However, Usman Khawaja, architect of the Thunder’s only Title, along with Alex Hales and captain Callum Ferguson, need to steer the ship of what is an inexperienced Thunder squad.

Also, can the Thunder limit the Heat’s hitting ability? Plenty of talent, such as Liam Hatcher (injury replacement for Gurinder Sandhu) and Tanveer Sangha, is available, but can they overcome inexperience and keep their cool? The slow bowlers, such as the ever-reliable Chris Green, might hold an important key in limiting the Heat batsmen, despite a good pitch expected.

BBL09 Match 1 BH vs ST Preview Dream11: Can Ferguson lead Thunder to a win?

Possible Playing 11

Brisbane Heat have named their 12-man squad. They found plenty of success by opening with Ben Cutting at the end of last season, and could do so again.

Brisbane Heat: 1. Tom Banton, 2. Ben Cutting, 3. Chris Lynn (c), 4. Max Bryant, 5. Matthew Renshaw, 6. Sam Heazlett, 7. James Peirson (wk), 8. Mitch Swepson, 9. Mark Steketee, 10. Josh Lalor, 11. Zahir Khan/Cameron Gannon

Sydney Thunder have also named their 12-man squad. Liam Hatcher has replaced Gurinder Sandhu, who is out with a calf injury. He could line up.

Sydney Thunder: 1. Usman Khawaja, 2. Alex Hales, 3. Callum Ferguson (c), 4. Alex Ross, 5. Daniel Sams, 6. Matthew Gilkes (wk), 7. Chris Green, 8. Arjun Nair, 9. Nathan McAndrew, 10. Liam Hatcher, 11. Chris Tremain

Pitch and Conditions

The forecast looks great for the first game of BBL09: about 25 degrees by the time the first ball is bowled. Traditionally, the Gabba surface offers very true pace and bounce – expect the same here.

Should be a blockbusting start to the BBL09 season.

5 BBL09 Predictions: Who Will Step Up and Who Will Win?

5 BBL09 Predictions: Who Will Step Up and Who Will Win? | 5 Predictions for BBL09 | Who will win BBL09 | BBL09 Predictions

It seems like yesterday that the likes of David Hussey, Travis Birt and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan lit up the first edition of the Big Bash League.

Nine years later, the BBL has become a key part of the Australian cricket season. Big guns such as AB de Villiers, Rashid Khan and Chris Lynn will grace BBL09, making it one of the most anticipated seasons to date.

After Melbourne Renegades won in the most incredible circumstances back in February, all eight teams will be back on deck to fight for the BBL09 Title. This article will explore five key BBL09 Predictions:

  • Leading run-scorer
  • Leading wicket-taker
  • Bottom-placed team
  • Top five teams
  • Winner

Leading run-scorer: D’Arcy Short (Hobart Hurricanes)

D’Arcy Short loves the BBL. He has been top-scorer in each of the past two seasons, amassing 1,209 runs in this period at an average of 54.95. With Short being such a dominant figure at the top of the order for Hobart Hurricanes, it is tough to go past him as the leading run-scorer once again.

Leading wicket-taker: Chris Jordan (Perth Scorchers)

Perth Scorchers have picked up Chris Jordan, an excellent T20 performer for England, for the entirety of the BBL09 season.

Chris Jordan is an excellent chance to finish as leading wicket-taker as he bowls in the crunch overs. Indeed, a key reason why the Scorchers drafted him in was because of his ability to bowl at the death – a period which can yield plenty of wickets.

Also, with key contenders such as Jhye Richardson and Kane Richardson a chance to play ODIs for Australia during the BBL, as well as most international signings playing a portion of the tournament, Jordan looks to be a great contender for leading wicket-taker. Other contenders include Sean Abbott (Sixers), Rashid Khan (Strikers) and Matt Kelly (Scorchers).

BBL09 Predictions: Chris Jordan is a genuine wicket-taker.

Bottom-placed team: Sydney Thunder

Tough call, given that the Sydney Thunder is the team I support.

However, while there is talent in their ranks such as Chris Green, Jason Sangha, Oliver Davies and Tanveer Sangha, along with Shane Bond at the helm, the Thunder, on paper, lack the depth that other teams have. Couple this with the retirement of Shane Watson, and the Thunder lack some key experience. It is a tough call, but in a close competition, they could finish bottom.

BBL09 Predictions: Can the Thunder cope well without Shane Watson?

Top five teams

One of the poor aspects of BBL09 has been the move to a top five rather than the top four. Now, the fifth-placed team will be involved in the playoffs stage, which is ridiculous in an eight-team competition.

Anyway, below are the five teams I think will qualify (in no particular order), which an explanation why for each.

  1. Melbourne Renegades: The champions look settled. The addition of Shaun Marsh, along with the experience of Aaron Finch, Dan Christian, Mohammad Nabi, Harry Gurney and Kane Richardson will hold them in good stead. Add the exciting youngsters they have, and the Renegades should be good enough to win enough games.
  2. Melbourne Stars: An all-time choke in the BBL08 Final shouldn’t be enough to write-off the Stars. With strong international signings in Sandeep Lamichhane and Dale Steyn in their ranks at times this season, the Stars possess plenty of talent. The likes of Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis will be out for big campaigns.
  3. Sydney Sixers: The likes of Daniel Hughes, Moises Henriques, Steve O’Keefe and Sean Abbott are consistent BBL performers. Add the cameos of Nathan Lyon and Steve Smith throughout the season, the potential of Josh Phillipe and Jack Edwards, plus the contributions of James Vince and Tom Curran, and the Sixers have a solid squad.
  4. Perth Scorchers: Perth had a horror season in BBL08. Finishing in last place, the Scorchers missed the playoffs for the first time ever. But, while they have lost Shaun Marsh, Michael Klinger and Nathan Coulter-Nile, they still possess plenty of excellent talent. Can they turn Optus Stadium into a fortress?
  5. Brisbane Heat: The power in the Brisbane Heat squad looks scary. Tom Banton (first eight games) and AB de Villiers (final six games) are the big international recruits. Add Chris Lynn, Max Bryant and Ben Cutting, with the poise of Marnus Labuschagne (after the NZ Tests), and the Heat boasts a side that has enough big totals in them to win games. Sure, the bowling remains a worry, but the power they have should be enough to get them in the top five.

Who will miss out:

  • The loss of Jofra Archer for Hobart Hurricanes leaves a huge hole in their lineup, along with Matt Wade missing the first part of the season. They look to be lacking depth in the bowling department, with not quite enough batting firepower to overcome that.
  • Sydney Thunder lack the balance and experience. Sure, the likes of Usman Khawaja will be out to prove a point, but they are slightly short of quality compared to the other teams. However, it wouldn’t be too big a shock if they punch above their weight.
  • Adelaide Strikers possess pretty much the same squad that struggled with the ball in BBL08. This is not to say they’ll struggle again in BBL09, but the question is whether they have enough depth to deal with Alex Carey going off to ODI duty during the campaign.

Winner: Melbourne Renegades

BBL09 looks to be very competitive. Each team can beat the other on their day, which makes predicting the winner a tough one.

However, the Renegades, defending champions, look to have most bases covered. They are very strong at their home ground (Marvel Stadium) and have the players to do well in the slow conditions there. But, should they need to adjust to pacier wickets, they have the likes of Zak Evans and Kane Richardson to take advantage.

The Renegades possess excellent experience. Also, the likes of Jack Wildermuth, Mackenzie Harvey and Marcus Harris can provide amazing value across BBL09. With a maiden title under their belt, along with the excellent leadership of Aaron Finch, the Renegades can go all the way.
