The 59th match of IPL 2025 is a day-time encounter, with Punjab Kings (PBKS) looking to seal their first playoffs’ appearance since 2014. PBKS have been strong for the most part this season, with the makeup of the squad working a treat in terms of depth with bat and ball.

Mitchell Johnson believes no overseas player should be “coerced or feel pressued” into returning to the Indian Premier League (IPL) and Pakistan Super League (PSL).

In his column for West Australian, the former left-arm fast bowler wrote that overseas players should prioritise their safety and other international commitments such as the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) Final. Also, Johnson wrote that it wouldn’t be fair if overseas players are punished in the future for an understandable decision they make now.

“Opting not to play could lead to disappointment or even professional and financial repercussions down the track, but prioritising safety is first and foremost,” Johnson wrote.

“Hearing accounts of the challenges faced in those regions only underscores the need for caution. It’s reported that players are weighing up the potential risks and the broader implications of their decisions.

“Ultimately, the choice should be about what feels safest and most right for each individual, rather than just a commitment to a franchise or winning a tournament.”

Safety of everyone must be the priority when conducting IPL and PSL – Mitchell Johnson

Johnson said he would not return to the IPL if he was currently playing. “It’s a no from me. Lives and safety are the most important thing, not pay cheques,” Johnson wrote.

“It’s a personal decision. No one should be coerced or feel pressured into going back, even if the IPL and Pakistan Super League, which has also been halted, push hard for it. Both tournaments should just end now or consider moving, which then becomes a huge financial issue.”

The Punjab Kings-Delhi Capitals match on May 8 was abandoned midway through the first innings at Dharamshala due to a blackout following air-raid warnings in nearby Jammu and Pathankot. The decision was taken to suspend the IPL the following day.

Following a ceasefire, the league will resume on May 17 with Royal Challengers Bengaluru taking on Kolkata Knight Riders. However, overseas players flew out of India soon after the league was suspended, and franchises have been scrambling to get players back on deck.

It has proven particularly tricky for Australian and South African players set to feature in the upcoming WTC Final. The IPL Final will now be played on June 3, just eight days before the big Test. South Africa have been more strict than Australia regarding their players missing the IPL playoffs, to Johnson’s surprise.

“Let’s not forget that some Australian and South African players will need to prepare for the upcoming World Test Championship final,” Johnson wrote.

“With the IPL final now pushed back to June 3, just a week before the WTC final starts at Lord’s, the impact on players’ preparation for what is supposedly as Test cricket’s showpiece match is another issue.

“South Africa appear to be taking a much harder line with their players than Australia, which is interesting given the financial ties between India and South Africa through the SA20 competition.

“Proteas coach Shukri Conrad says their players must still be home by May 26 regardless of the IPL being pushed back, while CA will “support players in their individual decisions” and “work through preparation implications” for the WTC final.”

The winner of the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) Final between Australia and South Africa at Lord’s will receive US$3.6 million in prize money. This is more than double what it was in the WTC 2021 and 2023 editions.

The runners up will also receive a nice payday, with US$2.16 million headed their way. This is an increase from US$800,000 in the previous two editions.

ICC confirms prize money for WTC Final: “Exhibits our efforts to prioritize Test cricket”

In a statement, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said the increase in prize money is part of their effort to make Test cricket a more attractive proposition. Also, the ICC wishes to continue building on the momentum of what is now three WTC cycles.

“The increase in prize money exhibits the ICC’s efforts to prioritize Test cricket as it looks to build on the momentum of the first three cycles of the nine-team competition,” read the ICC release.

The 2025 WTC Final promises to be a fascinating clash at Lord’s starting June 11. Australia are aiming for the second-straight title after beating India in 2023, while South Africa are seeking an elusive ICC title after 27 years. Their last ICC trophy was the 1998 Champions Trophy.

“I am sure spectators at Lord’s, along with fans tuning in from all over the world, will be treated to some top-class cricket in this revered format when Australia and South Africa take the field less than a month from now,” said ICC chair Jay Shah.

It was this tongue-in-cheek comment that gave birth to a legendary event. It was later that year that England toured Australia and the Australians presented England with a small urn that was said to contain the ashes of a burnt cricket bail. Regardless, ‘The Invincibles’ captured the imagination of the post-war generation, including a chase of 404 at Leeds

The 1981 ‘Botham Ashes’

The 1981 series turned more dramatically than any other ever had or has since. After falling behind in the third test, it was fair to say that England’s chances were all but gone. However, then came Ian Botham who produced an outstanding 149 at Headingley. England came back from the brink and ended up winning the series 3-1. This was one of the best comebacks of all time.

2005 and a Modern Classic

The 2005 contest is often referred to as the greatest Ashes series ever. It saw England get its hands back on the urn for the first time since 1986-87. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) came in for criticism with the Punjab Kings-Delhi Capitals match going ahead in Dharamshala despite the city’s close proximity to the India-Pakistan border. The match was called off after just 10.1 overs due to a blackout following air-raid warnings in nearby Jammu and Pathankot.

According to Sydney Morning Herald, some Australian players have expressed concern over the situation and are keen to leave India. Sam Perry and Ian Higgins from The Grade Cricketer Podcast have cancelled their remaining live shows and will head back to Australia.

On Friday, the IPL was officially suspended due to the escalating situation.
