Cricket News: Twitter reactions: England sweep NZ 3-0 in emphatic fashion | Reactions as Bairstow hammers NZ again
England rounded up the Test series vs New Zealand with an astounding chase on the final day of the third game at Headingley on Monday. Chasing 296 runs, the Ben Stokes-led side reached the target in merely 54.2 overs. Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow struck 86 and 71 runs at strike rates of 68.80 and 161.36 respectively to stitch a 111-run unbeaten partnership to take their side home.
Batting at number three, Ollie Pope played a sublime knock of 82 runs in 108 deliveries in an innings that perfectly signified England’s starting turnaround under new Test head coach Brendon McCullum. Let us take a look at certain reactions on Twitter over this fantastic 3-0 series victory by Stokes’ men.
Twitter reactions: England smash 113 runs in an hour to win
England notched up the remaining 113 runs in just 15 overs after rain delayed the start of day five.
Root and Bairstow finished the series with 396 and 394 runs to their names respectively. The former England skipper was named as the ‘Man of the Series’ whereas both these batsmen struck a couple of centuries each to spearhead the team’s incredible turnaround during this three-match series.
Daryl Mitchell’s 109 enabled New Zealand to put up a challenging total of 329 runs in their first innings. The Kiwi bowlers too helped by reducing England to 55/6 at one point. However, Bairstow (162) coupled with Jamie Overton (97) to put up a phenomenal partnership of 241 runs for the seventh wicket. England eventually took a 31-run lead in the first innings and their newfound attacking approach helped the side emerge victorious in the final game of the series as well.
Stokes’ team will be buoyed with their recent form as they prepare to take on India in the decider Test of their incomplete series from last year at Edgbaston from 1st July onwards. India has taken a 2-1 lead in the series and England have no option but to win the upcoming game to avoid a series defeat.
