Cricket News: Whopping 350 million viewers have tuned in to watch IPL 2024 on TV in big ratings for the league

The Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) has reported that 350 million (35 crore) viewers tuned in to watch the first 10 matches of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. These figures only take into account television ratings on Star Sports.

The 350 million figure is the highest at this stage of a season in IPL history. It surpasses the strong figures set in the campaigns played during the COVID-19 pandemic where there were no crowds and fans were at home.

IPL 2024 ratings up 20% on 2023 edition

Sanjog Gupta, Head of Sports at Disney Star, said the broadcaster is overwhelmed by the record-breaking figures. Disney Star’s coverage spans 14 feeds in 10 languages, catering also for the deaf and visually-impaired fans in a special feed in Indian sign language.

“We are overwhelmed with the record-breaking viewing figures for IPL 2024. Disney Star has continued its commitment to fan-centric initiatives, which have undoubtedly resonated with viewers,” Gupta said.

“The immense support and love received from fans reflect the enduring appeal of IPL and its capacity for further growth. Our efforts to enhance the IPL viewing experience through broadcast innovations and engaging programming have been validated by these exceptional numbers.”

The total watch-time for the tournament surged to a huge 80.20 billion minutes; a 20% increase compared to 20%. Disney Star has committed a lot of effort in engaging different fan segments.

  • New programming initiatives. This includes custom highlights and shows such as “Cheeky Singles” which is hosted by popular YouTuber Carry Minati.
  • “Super Funday” program targeting children aged 8-12.
  • Marketing campaign titled ‘AJAB IPL KE GAJAB RANG’ that captures the vast array of emotions that fans experience throughout an IPL season.

Ratings justify huge TV rights investment

The figures certainly justify the huge amounts of money put on the table by broadcasters for the IPL rights. The TV and digital media rights for the 2023-27 seasons were sold for a whopping US$6.2 billion in 2022. The result put the IPL second only to the National Football League (NFL) in terms of broadcast value per match.

Disney Star can look forward to another big week. April 8-14 is “Rivalry Week”, with a number of blockbuster games. These include Chennai Super Kings vs Kolkata Knight Riders on April 8 and Mumbai Indians vs Royal Challengers Bangalore on April 11.

Earlier, Shubman Gill continued his love affair with the Narendra Modi Stadium. His 48-ball 89* is his seventh 50+ score in 16 innings on this ground. Contributions from Sai Sudharsan (33 off 19 balls) and Rahul Tewatia (23* off 8 balls) enabled the Titans to score 116 off their final ten overs to score what looked to be an imposing 199.

The score looked even more imposing when Punjab Kings lost regular wickets to fall to 111/5 by the 13th over. Then, the dangerous Jitesh Sharma fell to a Rashid Khan full toss to leave the Kings needing 50 off 27 balls for an unlikely win.

Cricket News: Kagiso Rabada says it was unacceptable that players had to miss Tests in New Zealand due to SA20

Star fast bowler Kagiso Rabada has slammed Cricket South Africa (CSA) for how they handled the schedule earlier this year. Their two-match Test series in New Zealand coincided with the SA20 tournament, with CSA prioritising the T20 competition given the impact it has financially.

The Proteas sent a second-string team for their two-match Test series, where they predictably lost 2-0. Neil Brand’s team fought well in the second match, where Kane Williamson had to dig deep to ensure the Black Caps chased 267 without much fuss.

Very unacceptable for SA20 to clash with Tests – Kagiso Rabada

Speaking to PTI, Rabada said the whole episode was unacceptable. The fast bowler believes it’s not fair to have a go at the players who toured New Zealand, but rather the focus should be on the board.

“It was very very unacceptable and remains unacceptable to date; it was obviously a planning issue. It is unacceptable that is all I would say about that,” Rabada said.

“If I can go back on that point it is not fair to go at the players. It is not fair to say that players are being picked and they got free Test caps. I don’t think it is fair to put that criticism on the players. They simply got asked to go there, and at the end of the day they are not going to say no.”

Rabada then acknowledged the importance of the SA20. The tournament is crucial to CSA’s finances, with strong investment from IPL franchises forcing their hand to ensure the top domestic players are available for the whole competition.

“That is a planning issue and it has got to do with what is happening at the higher level; what happened with Cricket South Africa. It was basically a double book, that was what it was,” Rabada said

“End of the day, we didn’t really get a choice to even go there (New Zealand) because of the importance of the SA20. It is like shooting yourself in the foot.”

Test cricket is my favourite format – Rabada

However, the fast bowler believes Test cricket is the premier format. Rabada said that more needs to be done to ensure the format’s survival beyond the “big three” of India, Australia and England.

“Cricket comes from Test cricket and Test from my perspective is the best format. I would imagine all great players who play all formats would say Test cricket is their favourite format. It is the same for me as well,” he said.

“How do you incorporate other nations playing the same amount of Test cricket…I am not sure. If you are looking at prolonging Test cricket, if you want kids to keep playing Test cricket globally, then a plan has to be made.”

  • Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad hasn’t performed up to his reputations thus far. While playing in opposition of Sunrisers, 270 runs in five innings with SR 148 satisfies the fact that he likes to play against them.
  • Another CSK opener Rachin Ravindra gave two fantastic starts [37(15) & 46(20)] to the CSK innings in the powerplay. The talisman would again like to break the bowlers’ rhythm and set the tone on a potential batting friendly wicket.

Despite a flicker of hope from the Hardik Pandya-Tilak Varma partnership and fine Akash Madhwal spell, RR were always in control.

The nature of the defeat is concerning. A lot of the talk before the tournament was how the decision to replace five-time winning captain Rohit Sharma with Hardik would impact the team. There seems to be a sense of distraction among the playing group with outside noise growing more deafening by the minute.

Boos even rung out at the Wankhede during the toss.

R Ashwin came out in support of Hardik Pandya a few days ago, as have pundits and analysts. Sanjay Manjrekar even told the crowd to “behave”. There is a big focus on MI at the moment and it’s not on the cricket itself, which is greatly impacting their game.
