Why have the crowds been low in Sri Lanka for the 2023 Asia Cup?

Cricket News: Why have the crowds been low in Sri Lanka for the 2023 Asia Cup? | Reasons why crowds have been low in the Asia Cup

You would think the Super Four stage of an Asia Cup would see the kind of buzz and attendances worthy of the four cricket-crazy nations involved. However, it hasn’t been the case, with empty stands throughout Colombo’s R Premadasa Stadium for both the Sri Lanka vs. Bangladesh and India vs. Pakistan matches over the weekend.

Why and how can this be the case? Unfortunately, there are a number of factors. These are driven mainly by the organisers, who have overseen a terribly organised tournament that has made a mockery of not only a proud tournament, but international cricket as a whole.

Asia Cup 2023: Why the low crowds?

High ticket prices

Cost of living is a big issue around the globe. That is especially the case for Sri Lankans, with the country still in the midst of an economic crisis.

Fan Induneshan Sachu posted screenshots of the ticket prices for the India-Pakistan clash. Fans would have had to fork out 24,000 Sri Lankan rupees (approx. US$75) or 48,000 Sri Lankan rupees (approx. US$149) for a single ticket in Block A’s upper or lower level respectively.

The figures are quite damning. It shows a lack of awareness from the administrators. In an attempt to bring more fans back, ticket prices have been reduced for the C and D stands at the R Premadasa Stadium. But, is it too late?

Scheduling mishaps

The 2023 Asia Cup has left a lot to be desired when it comes to planning. There had been great uncertainty about the venues, with speculation the Super Four stage and Final would be moved due to Colombo’s inclement weather. However, just days before the main stage, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) confirmed that Colombo will remain host.

It has been a similar farce in the 2023 ODI World Cup. The final schedule was only confirmed in August, which doesn’t give many fans the opportunity to organise travel, accommodation and tickets to see their favourite teams and players in action.

Inclement weather

Shifting venues is a difficult task logistically. However, it’s not impossible. The decision to keep the Super Four matches and Final in Colombo was staggering.

The city has copped significant rainfall in recent times, and more of the same is expected in the coming week. Understandably, fans have stayed away with the weather likely to impact every remaining game, including both days of the India-Pakistan Super Four match.

ODI cricket on the wane?

It’s no secret that ODI cricket is under threat. Some fans believe the format’s reduced relevance has contributed to lower crowds. However, it must be noted that crowds have been healthy for the South Africa-Australia and England-New Zealand matches, with a World Cup just around the corner.

IND vs PAK Dream11 Prediction Possible 11 Pitch Report – Asia Cup 2023 Match 9

IND vs PAK Dream11 Prediction Possible 11 Pitch Report – Asia Cup 2023 Match 9 | IND vs PAK Dream11 Prediction Today | Colombo Pitch Report

India vs Pakistan needs no introduction. So much is at stake when these two sides meet in multi-nation tournaments, in addition to the bragging rights that come with victory.

However, will the weather be kind? The Colombo forecast looks ominous, but hope lies in the fact that Sri Lanka and Bangladesh were able to complete their match yesterday.

Should the weather hold, we could be in for a cracking contest. Pakistan look settled, while India are desperate for some meaningful game time. Shaheen Shah Afridi will be keen to get the better of India’s top order once again. His seam bowling partners were also excellent in the previous meeting, where they limited India to 267.

India’s approach and response in this game, where they are set to welcome back KL Rahul and Jasprit Bumrah, will be interesting to see. It is their first match of the Super Four stage, while Pakistan come into this clash off the back of a comfortable win over Bangladesh during the week.

Asia Cup 2023 Match 9 – IND vs PAK Possible Playing XIs

Jasprit Bumrah missed the Nepal match due to the birth of his child. He is set to return today, and India will be hoping he finally gets the chance to bowl again in an ODI.

Also, KL Rahul is expected to make his comeback from injury.

India: 1. Shubman Gill, 2. Rohit Sharma (c), 3. Virat Kohli, 4. Shreyas Iyer, 5. KL Rahul (wk), 6. Hardik Pandya, 7. Ravindra Jadeja, 8. Shardul Thakur, 9. Kuldeep Yadav, 10. Jasprit Bumrah, 11. Mohammed Siraj

Pakistan have named an unchanged XI. Their main focus will be more penetration in the middle overs, where they have not been as effective so far in the tournament.

Pakistan: 1. Fakhar Zaman, 2. Imam-ul-Haq, 3. Babar Azam (c), 4. Mohammad Rizwan (wk), 5. Agha Salman, 6. Iftikhar Ahmed, 7. Shadab Khan, 8. Faheem Ashraf, 9. Shaheen Shah Afridi, 10. Naseem Shah, 11 Haris Rauf

  • Hardik Pandya was excellent against Pakistan earlier in this Asia Cup. The all-rounder top scored with 87 off 90 balls, with his effectiveness against spin a key feature of that innings.

Pakistan:

  • Imam-ul-Haq is a mainstay in the Pakistan lineup. Since the start of last year, Imam has hit 940 runs at an average of 55.3 and strike rate of 86.8.
  • In the same period, Babar Azam has made 16 50+ scores in 22 innings in ODIs. Babar will be looking to improve on his record in Sri Lanka, where he has scored 150 runs in five innings.
  • Mohammad Rizwan continues to impress in ODIs. The keeper-batsman has scored 67, 44 and 63* in his past three innings.
  • Shadab Khan should enjoy the slower Colombo surface. He has gone wicketless in his past two ODIs, but he did take 3/42 against Afghanistan on this ground on August 26.
  • Also, Shadab is striking at 108.4 in six innings with the bat this year.

In terms of the pitch, the Colombo surface has been on the slower side. The team batting first has won the last two matches, with scores of 268/8 (by Pakistan vs Afghanistan) and 257/9 (by Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh) proving too good.

Colombo weather forecast for IND vs PAK Super 4 match

Cricket News: Colombo weather forecast for IND vs PAK Super 4 match | Colombo weather forecast for IND vs PAK Asia Cup

The Asian Cricket Council’s (ACC) decision to keep the business end of the Asia Cup will surely come under the scanner. Colombo, which has copped significant rainfall over the past week, is set to receive more in the coming days, putting the IndiaPakistan Super Four clash under threat.

In an attempt to overcome Sunday’s rain threat, the ACC locked in a reserve day on Monday, September 11. However, the forecast doesn’t look too promising then either.

Colombo weather threatens IND vs PAK Super Four match

AccuWeather predicts a significent deluge during the day on Sunday. Up to 20.1 mm is forecast, with a 90% chance of precipitation. The evening also looks bleak, with up to 6.6 mm forecast and a 80% chance of precipitation.

However, the hourly forecast shows less than a 50% chance of precipitation each hour from 9am to 3pm. But, thunderstorms are expected to kick in from 3pm onwards.

Google also forecasts significant rainfall. The platform shows precipitation levels of around 80% right throughout Sunday.

What about the reserve day?

It’s a similar story on Monday. Afternoon thunderstorms are forecast once again, with AccuWeather predicting a 99% chance of precipitation – and up to 29.1 mm of rain – during the day.

Google also paints a bleak picture, with the probability of rain exceeding 90% during most hours of the day.

Should rain have the final say, it will be the second no-result between India and Pakistan in this Asia Cup. The criticism towards the ACC – specifically Jay Shah – will surely grow louder.

Back on September 2 in Pallekele, Pakistan did not get the chance to chase down India’s 267 as rain washed out the second innings.

Shaheen Shah Afridi was the star that day with 4/35. Here’s hoping the Colombo weather is kind enough to allow fans to witness the next installment of Shaheen (and Pakistan) against India.

SA vs AUS 2nd ODI Dream11 Prediction Possible 11 Pitch Report

SA vs AUS 2nd ODI Dream11 Prediction Possible 11 Pitch Report | SA vs AUS 2nd ODI Dream11 Prediction Today | Bloemfontein Pitch Report

It’s no secret Australia’s long batting lineup is a key strength of theirs. The depths of 113/7 would mean game over for most other teams, but Ashton Agar at nine – as well as Marnus Labuschagne who isn’t even in Australia’s preliminary World Cup squad – means South Africa have to be good for longer.

Truth be told, South Africa’s bowling performance left a lot to be desired. Test match lengths were the order of the day on a pitch offering plenty of variable bounce. Instead, the Proteas seamers mixed the good with the bad, allowing Australia to score at a healthy rate throughout the innings.

On the batting front, Temba Bavuma provided a timely reminder of just how good he is in ODIs. His third hundred of 2023 was arguably his best, given the uncharacteristically difficult Bloemfontein pitch he achieved it on. However, it’s time for his teammates to step up, with Australia having won all four matches on tour to date.

Labuschagne, who was a concussion substitute for Cameron Green, also sent a reminder of his potential in the format. Debate will always rage on as to whether both Labuschagne and Steve Smith can play in the same XI going forward, but as long as the latter is unavailable, the former can play a vital role.

SA vs AUS 2nd ODI Possible Playing XIs

South Africa may give another chance to the same XI, although Tabraiz Shamsi is available.

South Africa: 1. Quinton de Kock (wk), 2. Temba Bavuma (c), 3. Rassie van der Dussen, 4. Aiden Markram, 5. Heinrich Klaasen, 6. David Miller, 7. Marco Jansen, 8. Keshav Maharaj, 9. Kagiso Rabada, 10. Gerald Coetzee/Tabraiz Shamsi, 11. Lungi Ngidi/Anrich Nortje

Cameron Green is out for a minimum of eight days due to concussion protocols. Marnus Labuschagne should slot in at number four.

Australia: 1. David Warner, 2. Travis Head, 3. Mitchell Marsh (c), 4. Marnus Labuschagne, 5. Josh Inglis, 6. Alex Carey (wk), 7. Marcus Stoinis, 8. Sean Abbott, 9. Ashton Agar, 10. Adam Zampa, 11. Josh Hazlewood

SA vs AUS 2nd ODI Dream11 Prediction – Fantasy Tips

South Africa:

  • Temba Bavuma has struck three centuries in seven ODIs this year. Two have come in Bloemfontein. Overall in 2023, the Proteas captain is averaging 106.80 with a strike rate of 105.10.
  • Rassie van der Dussen will be aiming to send a reminder of his ODI excellence. Since the start of 2022, van der Dussen has scored 765 runs at an average of 63.80 and strike rate of 92.30.
  • David Miller missed out in the first ODI. He does have a great record against Australia, with 713 runs at an average of 54.84 and strike rate of 104.69.
  • Kagiso Rabada in ODIs against Australia: 11 inns, 21 wickets, avg. 27.19. Rabada will be key against Travis Head, whom he has dismissed three times for 30 runs in 32 balls in ODIs.
  • Lungi Ngidi has even better numbers, with 14 scalps in six ODIs against Australia at an average of 19.92.

Australia:

  • David Warner is in need of runs. He has over 1,000 runs against the Proteas (avg. 41.95, SR 100.09) and a superb record against Kagiso Rabada: 124 balls, 155 runs, no dismissals.
  • Travis Head in ODIs since the start of 2022: 13 inns, 672 runs, avg. 61.1, SR 114.1.
  • Marnus Labuschagne enjoys batting in South Africa. In four ODIs in the country, Labuschagne has scored 229 runs at an average of 76.33 and strike rate of 93.61. This includes his match-winning 80* two days ago.
  • Marcus Stoinis is averaging just 18.2 with the bat in ODIs since the start of 2021. But, he is playing a key role with the ball on this tour, so he can fetch some strong fantasy points.
  • Josh Hazlewood caused Quinton de Kock problems in the first ODI. He conceded just eight of 21 balls. Overall in ODIs, Hazlewood has dismissed de Kock six times for 65 runs in 109 balls.
  • Hazlewood, who finished with 3/41 on Thursday, has taken 23 wickets in 12 innings against South Africa (avg. 23.17).

Other Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-head: South Africa 51, Australia 49, 3 ties, 1 N/R.
  • Australia’s win in the first ODI was just their second in the past 13 against South Africa.
  • Quinton de Kock has scored 710 ODI runs against Australia at a modest average of 30.86.
  • Mitchell Marsh smashed 194 runs at an average of 97.00 and strike rate of 131.1 in three ODIs in India earlier this year.
  • Adam Zampa vs SA in ODIs: 13 matches, 11 wickets, avg. 53.45, SR 58.27.

Mangaung Oval Bloemfontein Pitch Report and Weather

Historically, Bloemfontein is home to some of the flattest pitches in South Africa. However, that was not the case in the first ODI, with uneven bounce, seam movement and turn on offer right throughout the day.

According to the below tweet, a separate pitch is being prepared for the second ODI. If it plays like a typical Bloemfontein track, expect some more run-scoring. Another clear day is forecast.

Mitchell Starc to put name in IPL 2024 Auction

Cricket News: Mitchell Starc to put name in IPL 2024 Auction | Mitchell Starc intends to return to the IPL

Left-arm fast bowler Mitchell Starc is set to make his long-awaited return to the Indian Premier League (IPL). Speaking to the Willow Talk podcast, Starc confirmed he will put his name forward for the IPL 2024 Auction, ending a near decade-long absence from the tournament.

“Look it’s been eight years. I’m definitely going back in [next] year,” he said. “Amongst other things, it’s a great lead-up to the T20 World Cup.

I’m definitely going back in the IPL Auction – Mitchell Starc

Since 2015, Starc has opted out of the IPL to focus on national duties. Because Australia have a relatively quiet middle period of the year in 2024, the left-armer sees an opportunity to put his name in. Also, there is the T20 World Cup to prepare for, with the Australians aiming to repeat their 2021 efforts where they won in the UAE.

“A good opportunity to see if anyone’s interested in the IPL, then lead into the T20 World Cup. And it’s somewhat of a quiet winter next year … in comparison to this winter, so I think a perfect opportunity to put my name in,” Starc continued.

It is no secret that Starc offers value in the crunch powerplay and death overs, plus the variety as a left-arm option. One can only imagine the amount franchises will pay for Starc’s services, especially if he has a big ODI World Cup in India.

There is every chance he will have a big tournament. The 50-over World Cup is Starc’s kryptonite, taking 49 wickets overall at an average of 14.8 and strike rate of 19.1.

Currently, Starc is recovering from injury and is out of Australia’s five ODIs in South Africa. He is expected to be fit and ready for the World Cup, where he will be vital in Australia’s quest of their sixth crown.

The general consensus after Australia’s 3-0 series win in the T20s was that South Africa were missing too much established talent to stand a chance. Now, there can be no such excuse as the Proteas will field their full-strength side as preparations ramp up for the ODI World Cup.

Australia, on the other hand, are without some of their established players including Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc. However, Australia ahead of a World Cup are a different beast, so expect the players selected to put on a show with changes to World Cup squads still possible up until September 28.

The Proteas welcome back magnificent fast bowlers Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje. Quinton de Kock is also set for his last hurrah in ODIs over the next few weeks. Temba Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen are back in their favourite white-ball format, with David Miller and Heinrich Klaasen to finish things off. It’s a strong side, and they deservedly start as favourites.

Mangaung Oval, Bloemfontein Pitch Report and Weather

In the previous game of that series, South Africa scored 298/7 and won by 27 runs. In the 2020 series between the Proteas and Australia, the hosts chased down 274 with ease.

A sunny day is forecast with a top of about 21 degrees. Expect temperatures to drop in the evening with dew possible.

“Book My Show is a complete scam” – India fans slam ticketing process for 2023 World Cup

Cricket News: “Book My Show is a complete scam” – India fans slam ticketing process for 2023 World Cup | Fans slam BCCI & Book My Show

There is only one month to go before the 2023 ODI World Cup. Excitement should be well and truly in the air by now, especially given India will be hosting the World Cup on its own for the very first time.

Instead, fans have been left scrambling for tickets, being kept in queues and accusing Book My Show (BMS), the World Cup’s ticketing partner, of a scarcely-believable scam.

BMS have been adamant that high demand in a cricket-crazy country has been the reason for long wait times. This is especially the case for the India-Pakistan clash at Ahmedabad on October 14. However, fans have dug a little deeper, inspecting the code on the BMS website and sharing their findings.

The shocking revelation found that only 8,334 tickets were allegedly made available for the match at Narendra Modi Stadium. The stadium fits 132,000 people. Speculation is rife that the majority of tickets have been withheld from the public in favour of corporates, celebrities and the like.

According to Business Outlook India, tickets for the sold-out match are available on online black-market forums for “three-to-four times the original price”.

BMS, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the International Cricket Council (ICC) are yet to provide an official response to the claims.

Fans slam Book My Show and overall planning for the World Cup

Tickets for the India-Pakistan showdown went live at 8pm (IST) on Monday September 4, just over a month before the match. Users reported that BMS kept them in the queue for hours even when the tickets were sold out within minutes. Others tried to book using multiple devices, but had no luck.

Also, fans were left disgruntled at the app’s lack of transparency regarding the number of seats available at a given point in time.

The struggle for tickets so close to the tournament comes after the final schedule was only confirmed in August. The draft schedule was changed numerous times, which has left fans scrambling to organise tickets and accommodation to be able to witness their favourite teams and players in action.

“The 2023 World Cup in India was supposed to be a huge spectacle. Never has India hosted it all by itself,” one fan wrote. “Instead it has turned into a complete mismanagement of all sorts. Tickets being sold barely 2-3 weeks before World Cup, scheduling issues, fans not getting even 10% of ticket share, international fans having no idea about anything, etc.”

Here are further reactions to the debacle that has been the build up to the 2023 World Cup.

ACC likely to shift venues of Super 4 matches of the Asia Cup

Cricket News: ACC likely to shift venues of Super 4 matches of the Asia Cup | Will the Super 4 matches be moved from Colombo?

The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is considering rescheduling Super Fours matches of the 2023 Asia Cup away from Colombo. The city has copped heavy rainfall in recent days, with more rain forecast in the coming week which can lead to washouts.

The marquee India-Pakistan clash in Kandy on Saturday delivered a no-result, and organisers may want to limit such instances.

Will the Super 4 matches and final be shifted?

However, zeroing upon an alternative venue at this point in time is a cause of concern for the tournament organisers. Dambulla has emerged as an option but the Indian team has had issues with the hotel and accommodation facilities there. Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan Cricket (SLC) officials claim that there is some work going on regarding the floodlights in the stadium, as reported by ESPNcricinfo.

On September 4, ESPNcricinfo reported that the Super 4 matches and final could be moved Hambantota. According to PCB sources, the venue has been signed off. However, organisers have had to deal with logistical issues, given high-quality hotels are at least 45 minutes away from the ground given its location is essentially in a jungle near the small town of Sooriyawewa.

Further, official broadcasters are against the idea of holding the matches across two venues. They would have to either transport the necessary equipment via road or maintain the required infrastructure at different locations in the island country.

The 2023 Asia Cup schedule has been under the scanner right from the offset. Pakistan was originally the official host of the tournament. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) insisted that India will not be traveling across the border for the matches. This resulted in the games being shifted to Sri Lanka, with teams flying back and forth between the two countries for their games.

AFG vs SL Dream11 Prediction Possible 11 Pitch Report – Asia Cup 2023 Match 6 | AFG vs SL Dream11 Prediction Today | Lahore Pitch Report

Group B, the group of death, predictably comes down to the final match. Sri Lanka, despite their injuries, swept aside Bangladesh in impressive fashion last week, while Afghanistan had a match to forget in the Lahore heat against the same opponent.

The Afghans can still qualify for the Super Fours. Using 275 as the first innings score, Afghanistan will need to win by at least 68 runs. If they bat second, they must chase any target in 35 overs or less. It looks a challenging proposition against a Sri Lankan side who have won their past 11 ODIs, including two in a row against them in June.

The key question for Afghanistan is whether their batting can hold up against Sri Lanka’s skilled attack. Conditions are magnificent for batting at Lahore, so Hashmatullah Shahidi’s team must look to be more proactive up top compared to their struggles against Bangladesh. Also, while there should be dew in the evening, batting first will be the way to go given the stifling Lahore heat.

IND vs NEP Dream11 Prediction Possible 11 Pitch Report – Asia Cup 2023 Match 5 | IND vs NEP Dream11 Prediction Today | Pallekele Pitch Report

The Pallekele weather is in the spotlight once again as India and Nepal look to improve on their recent performances against Pakistan. Victory for either team – and it certainly would be a massive story if Nepal were to win – will send them to the Super Fours, but for India in particular, it is about getting players in rhythm ahead of the World Cup.

Speaking of rhythm, Jasprit Bumrah won’t have the chance to find any today. He has travelled home for personal reasons, but should be available for the Super Four stage. At the other end of the lineup, the top order will be after an improved showing after Pakistan’s seamers had their way in the opening 15 overs.

This is where an opportunity lies for Nepal. They started nicely against Pakistan, reducing the co-hosts to 124/4 before falling away. Had Karan KC taken a chance off his bowling with Babar Azam on 55, the Nepalese could have caused a scare. So, India, who are clear favourites, need to be aware and on their game.

Asia Cup 2023 Match 5 – IND vs NEP Possible Playing XIs

India: 1. Rohit Sharma (c), 2. Shubman Gill, 3. Virat Kohli, 4. Shreyas Iyer, 5. Ishan Kishan (wk), 6. Hardik Pandya, 7. Ravindra Jadeja, 8. Shardul Thakur, 9. Kuldeep Yadav, 10. Mohammed Siraj, 11. Mohammed Shami/Prasidh Krishna

Nepal: 1. Kushal Bhurtel, 2. Aasif Sheikh (wk), 3. Rohit Paudel (c), 4. Aarif Sheikh, 5. Sompal Kami, 6. Gulsan Jha, 7. Dipendra Singh Airee, 8. Kushal Malla, 9. Sandeep Lamichhane, 10. Karan KC, 11. Lalit Rajbanshi

IND vs NEP Dream11 Prediction – Fantasy tips

India:

  • Virat Kohli missed out against Pakistan. But, the great batsman is enjoying a strong year in all white-ball cricket (IPL and ODIs): 24 inns, 1,070 runs, avg. 50.95, SR 128.61.
  • Shubman Gill also missed out against Pakistan, but you’d be brave to leave him out of your fantasy team. Since the start of 2022, Gill has struck 1,398 ODI runs at an average of 66.60 and strike rate of 104.20.
  • Ishan Kishan played arguably his best knock in ODI cricket a few days ago. He struck an excellent 81-ball 82 against Pakistan under pressure.
  • Hardik Pandya in ODIs since the start of last year: 13 inns, 467 runs, avg. 38.9, SR 97.9.
  • Mohammed Siraj will be key in the powerplay in overcast conditions. Since the start of 2022, Siraj has taken 26 wickets at an average of 16.80 and economy of 4.24 between overs 1-10.

Nepal:

  • Rohit Paudel and Aasif Sheikh are key for Nepal up top. Both are the only two Nepalese players to hit over 1,000 ODI runs.
  • Sompal Kami top-scored for Nepal (28) and took two wickets against Pakistan. He did find the going difficult at the death, so this will be an area of focus for he and his team.
  • Karan KC impressed in the early overs against Pakistan. India were shaky in the powerplay last game, so Karan will be looking to test the Indians with his accuracy.
  • Sandeep Lamichhane is vital to Nepal’s hopes of a competitive showing. The legspinner is the only Nepalese player with 100+ ODI wickets. He averages 17.71.

Other Stats and Facts

  • This will be the first ODI between the two nations.
  • Out of India’s 267 against Pakistan, 138 came in one stand between Hardik Pandya and Ishan Kishan.
  • Virat Kohli has scored 29 runs off 18 balls without dismissal against Sandeep Lamichhane in T20s.
  • Kushal Bhurtel is six away from 1,000 ODI runs.
  • Kohli needs 98 to reach 13,000 ODI runs.

Pallekele International Cricket Stadium Pitch Report and Weather

Google’s weather forecast does not look promising, but AccuWeather paints a more positive picture. Overcast weather is expected all day, which may make it challenging for the batsmen as it was a few days ago in the India-Pakistan match.
