Piers Morgan tweets emerge on rain saving England in 2013 Ashes

Cricket News: Piers Morgan tweets emerge on rain saving England in 2013 Ashes | Tweets from 2013 shows Morgan had no issues with rain

UK media personality Piers Morgan hates when rain decides the cricket.

Except if it benefits England.

Just like footage emerged of Jonny Bairstow executing a stumping within the rules of cricket (when it suits), tweets of Morgan’s emerged during one of his many rants on Twitter.

Morgan was not impressed as Australia retained the Ashes due to Manchester weather, claiming “has there ever been a less-deserved retention of the Ashes? From the Bairstow debacle to this rain-soaked fiasco, it’s an absolute farce that smirking Australia have ended up with the urn still in their hands.” England comfortably the better side as this Test showed. Gutting.”

Piers Morgan tweets from 2013 emerge

Fans were quick to respond to Morgan with his tweets from the 2013 Ashes. Australia, 2-0 down after two Tests, had the better of the third Test, also at Manchester. After scoring 527/7d and limiting England to 368, Australia then reduced the hosts to 37/3 in pursuit of 332.

However, rain washed out the final day, meaning England retained the Ashes after winning the series in 2010/11.

Morgan was very happy for the rain to intervene on that occasion. In response to a tweet that read “It’s wrong of me to want it to rain in Manchester. Completely wrong & unsporting,” Morgan replied, “it’s Australia. Relax.”

Also, former England offspinner Graeme Swann said “Many times I have cursed the rain in Manchester, but today I would take it home to meet my grandma and marry it,” to which Morgan replied “BOOM”.

Below are some of Morgan’s receipts from the 2013 Ashes series, further highlighting England’s dismay when something – or anything – goes against them.

The 2023 Ashes series will conclude at The Oval. Some rain is forecast in London, but there should hopefully be enough play for a result.

The Oval London weather forecast for 5th Ashes Test

Cricket News: The Oval London weather forecast for 5th Ashes Test | What is the weather forecast for the 5th Ashes Test?

The weather is arguably the biggest talking point in cricket right now after the Manchester rain denied England an opportunity to level the series at 2-2.

This Ashes series, which has been enthralling and topsy-turvy in equal measure, did deserve a showpiece finish. However, the hosts, who are left to rue key moments in the first two Tests, can still deny Australia a first series win in England since 2001.

Attention now turns to The Oval for the fifth and final Test starting Thursday, 27th July. Here is a look at the weather forecast for the match.

5th Ashes Test 2023: The Oval London weather forecast – will rain have a say?

According to BBC.com, rain is likely to cause interruptions in the fifth Test as well. However, the forecast has improved slightly for day one, with chances of precipitation hovering around 40-60% as compared to 70% a few days ago.

AccuWeather forecasts “mostly cloudy, breezy and humid with a touch of rain” on Thursday. The platform predicts a 71% chance of precipitation during the day, with up 2.5mm of rain expected to fall.

Given moderately breezy conditions are expected, one can hope the rain clouds blow away quickly enough to allow for sufficient play on Thursday.

Days two, three and four look more promising. BBC.com forecasts 0% chance of precipitation from 2pm and less than 20% before that on Friday (day two).

Chances of precipitation are higher on Saturday (up to 48%), with drizzle a possibility late morning and early afternoon. Sunday looks mostly clear, with a peak 21% chance of precipitation at 1pm.

The chance of rain is higher on day five. The chances of precipitation are 66-70% between 11am and 4pm, with thundery showers and a moderate breeze forecast.

With all this in mind, there should hopefully be enough to play see a result in the fifth Test.

What will this mean for team selections?

The Oval is typically one of the better batting surfaces in England. The average first innings score at the ground since 2013 is 320.6. Australia scored 469 in the recent World Test Championship Final against India.

Will Australia pick a specialist spinner this time? Or will pace be the way to go in overcast conditions? Teams batting first have won 60% of the matches on this ground in the past decade. So, bowling last with a specialist spinner can be a matchwinning move.

Time will tell.

Test cricket vs SA20: CSA prioritise T20 league over NZ tour

Cricket News: Test cricket vs SA20: CSA prioritise T20 league over NZ tour | South Africa could send second-string team to New Zealand

Cricket South Africa (CSA) is prioritising the SA20 over their Test tour of New Zealand in February 2024. CSA CEO Pholetsi Moseki told ESPNcricinfo that while they are mindful of the national team fulfilling bilateral obligations, the SA20 takes first priority.

“Protea players in the SA20 will not be going to New Zealand and that is a directive from CSA,” said CSA CEO Pholetsi Moseki CSA CEO. “But our plans are on track. The auction will be the next milestone and Shukri [Conrad, the Test coach] will then determine player availability for the tour.”

In a recent CricBlog survey, 75% of respondents said they believe franchise owners will soon hold power over cricket boards. The SA20 tournament, which kicked off in 2023, has a suite of investors. IPL franchise owners have invested in the teams, which leaves CSA in a position where those owners want a return.

So, having first-choice South Africa players available for that tournament is key to keep the investors happy, which means the Proteas will send a second-string team to New Zealand.

SA20 vs Test cricket: New Zealand will not negotiate dates

CSA were hoping the schedule could be re-arranged in order to ensure that the dates do not clash with the second season of the SA20. However, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) did not agree to reschedule dates for the two-match Test series.

The two Tests will be conducted from February 4-17, 2024, and it will hence collide with the business end of CSA’s flagship T20 tournament.

“These Tests have been part of the FTP since it was announced two years ago. We’ve collaborated and agreed dates with CSA, who have confirmed the tour, acknowledged the arrangements and have been in receipt of the schedule for several weeks,” NZC manager of public affairs Richard Boock was quoted in a report by ESPNcricinfo.

Boock added, “Flights have been confirmed, dates for the practice game have been agreed, and we’re looking forward to the squad’s arrival. The Proteas are a popular and formidable Test team and we view them as an important part of our home summer schedule.”

The Kiwis were unable to reschedule the Tests with South Africa to any other time in the home season. So, the Proteas will send second-string side to New Zealand for the red-ball series.

While the CSA centrally-contracted players owe their allegiance both to the national team as well as their respective franchises, the SA20 holds the primary rights over the players in the January window.

LAKR vs SEO Dream11 Prediction Possible 11 Pitch Report MLC 2023 Match 12 | LAKR vs SEO Dream11 Prediction Today | Morrisville Pitch Report

The winless team comes up against the only team with a 100 per cent record in the inaugural season of Major League Cricket.

Los Angeles Knight Riders (LAKR) will be looking to end their disappointing season on a high, fighting off the threat of finishing the campaign without a single win. Lots has fallen on Andre Russell’s shoulders, and despite his best efforts, LAKR have not scored enough runs nor have they offered enough control with the ball.

The opposite applies to Seattle Orcas (SEO). Led by Wayne Parnell’s superb five-wicket haul, Seattle were far too good for Texas, who are also one of the better-performing teams this season. Top spot and automatic qualification to the MLC 2023 Final is up for grabs, so Parnell’s team surely won’t be letting up in this afternoon clash.

LAKR vs SEO Possible Playing XIs

Los Angeles Knight Riders: 1. Jason Roy, 2. Unmukt Chand, 3. Nitish Kumar, 4. Rilee Rossouw, 5. Andre Russell, 6. Jaskaran Malhotra (wk), 7. Sunil Narine (c), 8. Corné Dry, 9. Adam Zampa, 10. Ali Khan, 11. Spencer Johnson

Seattle Orcas: 1. Quinton de Kock (wk), 2. Nauman Anwar, 3. Shehan Jayasuriya, 4. Heinrich Klaasen, 5. Dasun Shanaka/Shimron Hetmyer, 6. Shubham Ranjane, 7. Imad Wasim, 8. Wayne Parnell (c), 9. Cameron Gannon, 10. Harmeet Singh, 11. Andrew Tye

LAKR vs SEO Dream11 Prediction – Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Los Angeles Knight Riders:

  • Andre Russell is the top run-scorer in MLC 2023 (169) at an average of 84.50 and strike rate of 164.07. His matchup with AJ Tye at the death could work in his favour, given he has strong numbers against him: 35 balls, 63 runs, three dismissals, SR 186.
  • Jason Roy has scored 134 off 84 balls against left-arm orthodox this year, with four dismissals. An interesting battle against Imad Wasim could await us.
  • Rilee Rossouw prefers to bat first in T20s. Since the start of 2022, Rossouw has scored 988 runs in franchise T20s at an average of 32.9 and strike rate of 159.6.
  • Sunil Narine has excellent numbers against Quinton de Kock in T20s: 54 balls, 51 runs, three dismissals.
  • Adam Zampa is the second-highest wicket-taker in MLC 2023 (7) at an average of 18.71 and strike rate of 12.85.

Seattle Orcas:

  • Quinton de Kock found form in the last game with 53 off 36 balls. If he gets going here, he could go big against an LAKR attack that has been expensive for the most part.
  • Across ODIs and T20Is, de Kock has scored 64 runs off 35 balls against Zampa (one dismissal).
  • Heinrich Klaasen goes from strength to strength. His game against spin continues to amaze. He has smashed 436 runs at an average of 109.00 and strike rate of 184 vs. spin in T20s this year.
  • Wayne Parnell was outstanding against TSK. He blew them away, finishing with 5/20. One key battle we may see today is Parnell vs. Roy as the opener was dismissed by left-arm seam in the last game.
  • Parnell has enjoyed success against Andre Russell in T20 cricket: 8 balls, 10 runs, two wickets.
  • Australians Cameron Gannon (six wickets) and Andrew Tye (five wickets) are in good form in MLC 2023.
  • Imad Wasim (four wickets in MLC 2023) is conceding just 6.18 per over this season. Three of his four scalps have come in the powerplay.

Church Street Park Morrisville Pitch Report and Weather

A warm day is forecast for this afternoon clash. The forecast is for a top of 37 degrees. However, there is a chance of afternoon storms, which may impact the game later on in the contest.

Chasing has proven to be the way to go in both of the first two matches on the ground.

Footage of Harmanpreet Kaur smashing stumps – captain criticised

Cricket News: Footage of Harmanpreet Kaur smashing stumps – captain criticised | Reactions to Harmanpreet Kaur smashing stumps after dismissal

India captain Harmanpreet Kaur could find herself in hot water following her reaction to being dismissed in the third ODI against Bangladesh at Mirpur.

Harmanpreet was adjudged LBW in the 34th over of India’s chase of 226. Left-arm spinner Nahida Akter, who finished with 3/37, dismissed Kaur in an attempt to play a sweep after umpire Tanvir Ahmed gave her out.

The Indian captain was livid with the call, hitting the stumps with her bat and having stern words with Ahmed as she walked off. Here are a few different angles of the incident.

Harmanpreet was also very strong with her words in the post-match presentation following a thrilling tie where Bangladesh came back from nowhere to salvage the match and tie the series.

“I think a lot of learning from us from the game. Even apart from the cricket, the kind of umpiring that was happening, we were very surprised,” she said. “The next time we come to Bangladesh, we will make sure we have to deal with this type of umpiring and prepare ourselves accordingly.

“They [Bangladesh] batted really well, batted according to the situation. They were taking those singles which were very crucial. In between, we leaked a few runs but we controlled the game very well when we were batting.”

Kaur continued, “but, as I mentioned earlier, some pathetic umpiring was done; we are really disappointed about some decisions given by the umpires.”

Reactions to Harmanpreet Kaur hitting stumps and criticising umpires

Some fans criticised Harmanpreet for her actions as captain of India.

There were also calls for better umpiring and DRS in all women’s internationals. The argument is that the ball hit the ground after Kaur bottom-edged it.

Cricket News: Best memes & reactions to rain on day 4 of Old Trafford Test | Reactions to rain playing spoilsport on day 4 of 4th Ashes Test

England have played the near perfect Test across three days, but are now sitting nervously waiting for the rain to relent on day five at Old Trafford. The hosts have been outstanding, making World Test Champions Australia look third rate for most of the contest, putting themselves in a great position to level the series 2-2.

However, rain could very well have the final say. Going 2-0 down in an Ashes series not only poses the challenge of beating the opposition thrice, but the weather as well. Barring enough gaps in the weather on day five, it looks like the rain could beat England, meaning Australia will retain the urn.

While that is disheartening to England fans, the reactions on Twitter can make for some cheering up. As the clouds hang low, rain threatens to appear and umpires have a chat and inspect, here are some of the best memes and reactions to rain playing spoilsport on the fourth day at Old Trafford.

One session of play was possible on day four. Marnus Labuschagne struck his second away hundred right when the team needed it. He put on a 103-run stand with Mitchell Marsh (31*), reducing the deficit below 70 in the process.

Joe Root and Moeen Ali looked the most threatening of the bowlers on a pitch aiding turn and uneven bounce for the spinners. Should there be some play, batting conditions are sure to be challenging with the overcast conditions, pressure of the situation and footmarks for the spinners to exploit.

Why did Pakistan star Ayesha Naseem retire at 18?

Cricket News: Why did Pakistan star Ayesha Naseem retire at 18? | Ayesha Naseem retires from cricket at age 18

Pakistani teenage cricket star Ayesha Naseem has hung her boots from the sport at 18 years of age citing religious reasons. The batter had informed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) that she has bid goodbye to the game earlier this year itself.

The senior national women’s team skipper Nida Dar made efforts to convince Ayesha to rethink her decision but it did not bear the desired results. Ayesha has clarified that she wants to live her life as a practicing Muslim in accordance with the Islamic laws.

“She was contacted for a training camp and assignment but she told the board she no longer wanted to play cricket,” a source in the know of developments was quoted in a report by the Press Trust of India (PTI). The source added, “Efforts were made even by Nida Dar and some Pakistan players to convince her that she can be a practicing Muslim and also play cricket at the same time but Ayesha refused to rethink her decision.”

Ayesha Naseem showed plenty of promise

The Abbottabad-born cricketer emerged as a regular in the Pakistani T20I team in her short international career. She was renowned for her hard-hitting skills with the bat and earned praise from none another than Wasim Akram for her splendid talent. She represented Pakistan in 34 international matches, which included 30 T20Is and four ODIs.

In the shortest format, Ayesha struck 369 runs at a strike rate of 128.12. She played multiple cameos of significance and hit 18 sixes, which demonstrated her impressive power-hitting abilities. Touted to be the next big thing in Pakistan’s women cricket, Ayesha’s retirement comes as a shock to the cricketing fraternity.

Videos of several of her innings against top international teams have been circulating all over Twitter since the news broke out.

Cricket News: Why did Pakistan postpone the West Indies series in January 2024? | Details on why Pakistan postponed West Indies series

In a recent development, the Pakistan Cricket Board has postponed their home series against West Indies, which was scheduled to be held in January and February next year, to January 2025. Instead of that series, Pakistan will now be playing five T20 Internationals against New Zealand away from home.

Pakistan was also scheduled to have a separate away series against New Zealand consisting of three ODIs and five T20Is in January, 2025. However, with the West Indies series now postponed, the New Zealand tour has been shifted to April, 2025.

It is now reported that Pakistan is scheduled to play a whopping 19 T20Is from now until the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, according to the Men’s Future Tours Programme (FTP).

More than half of the 19 T20Is will be contested against New Zealand; five away from home in January next year, and five at home in April, 2024.

Pakistan tour of New Zealand 2024 schedule

  • 1st T20I – Jan 12, Auckland
  • 2nd T20I – Jan 14, Hamilton
  • 3rd T20I – Jan 17, Dunedin
  • 4th T20I – Jan 19, Christchurch
  • 5th T20I – Jan 21, Christchurch

Pakistan will also be playing three T20Is against Netherlands, two against Ireland and four against England before the T20 World Cup next year.

Moreover, after the second Test of the ongoing series against Sri Lanka, Pakistan is scheduled to play just three Tests until August 2024. The Australia series at the end of the year will be an away one for Pakistan, meaning that they will not play any home Tests the entire season.

In August 2024, Pakistan will host Bangladesh for a two-Test series.

2023 Women’s Ashes smashes attendance & ratings records

Cricket News: 2023 Women’s Ashes smashes attendance & viewership records | Women’s Ashes 2023 attendances and viewership

In another win for women’s sport, the 2023 Women’s Ashes achieved outstanding attendance and viewership numbers. England pushed the mighty Australia team all the way, finishing level on points after sealing both the T20I and ODI series.

The hosts very nearly pulled off a remarkable coup of regaining the Ashes after losing the one-off Test, which they were very competitive in. They lost off the penultimate ball in the opening T20I and took the second ODI to the final ball, where they lost by just three runs.

Clearly, fans were enthralled and are right behind the England team. The 2023 edition of the Ashes left 2019 for dead in terms of supporters watching at the ground as well as on broadcasts and social media.

Below are some of the numbers released by England Cricket in the aftermath of the closely-fought battle between two great rivals.

Total attendance of 110,000 across the 2023 Women’s Ashes series

The Test, three T20Is and three ODIs saw a total attendance of 110,000. This is 4.5 times more than the 2019 Ashes series.

Also, all three ODIs were sell outs. This is the first-ever England Women’s ODI series to sell out, with full crowds at Bristol, Southampton and Taunton respectively.

5.3 million viewers on live TV & 47 million video views

The 2023 Women’s Ashes series reached 5.3 million viewers on live TV, more than double 2019’s number. Also, all women’s Ashes highlights videos on the England & Wales Cricket Board YouTube channel had a total of approximately 8.14 million views at 20th July, along with two million viewers tuning into BBC TV highlights.

In addition, the series drew in 47 million video views across all of England Cricket’s social media outlets.

33.5% of ticket buyers were women

One of the key objectives of elite women’s sport is to inspire the next generation of girls. Crowds were full of young fans. Also, it is clear that the series engaged the female audience, with women purchasing over a third of the tickets sold.

Fans were greeted with a high standard of cricket right throughout the 2023 Women’s Ashes series. The women’s game continues to trend upwards. With England and other nations beginning to provide strong competition, the engagement is only going to improve further.

Both Australia and England now switch their focus to upcoming assignments. The Australians travel to Ireland for three ODIs starting Sunday July 21. England’s cricketers will soon begin their 2023 Hundred campaign before hosting Sri Lanka for three T20Is and three ODIs starting August 31.
