Why did Pakistan postpone the West Indies series in January 2024?

Cricket News: Why did Pakistan postpone the West Indies series in January 2024? | Details on why Pakistan postponed West Indies series

In a recent development, the Pakistan Cricket Board has postponed their home series against West Indies, which was scheduled to be held in January and February next year, to January 2025. Instead of that series, Pakistan will now be playing five T20 Internationals against New Zealand away from home.

Pakistan was also scheduled to have a separate away series against New Zealand consisting of three ODIs and five T20Is in January, 2025. However, with the West Indies series now postponed, the New Zealand tour has been shifted to April, 2025.

It is now reported that Pakistan is scheduled to play a whopping 19 T20Is from now until the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, according to the Men’s Future Tours Programme (FTP).

More than half of the 19 T20Is will be contested against New Zealand; five away from home in January next year, and five at home in April, 2024.

Pakistan tour of New Zealand 2024 schedule

  • 1st T20I – Jan 12, Auckland
  • 2nd T20I – Jan 14, Hamilton
  • 3rd T20I – Jan 17, Dunedin
  • 4th T20I – Jan 19, Christchurch
  • 5th T20I – Jan 21, Christchurch

Pakistan will also be playing three T20Is against Netherlands, two against Ireland and four against England before the T20 World Cup next year.

Moreover, after the second Test of the ongoing series against Sri Lanka, Pakistan is scheduled to play just three Tests until August 2024. The Australia series at the end of the year will be an away one for Pakistan, meaning that they will not play any home Tests the entire season.

In August 2024, Pakistan will host Bangladesh for a two-Test series.

Pakistan Men’s updated Future Tours Programme 2023/24: West Indies shifted to early 2025

2023 Women’s Ashes smashes attendance & ratings records

Cricket News: 2023 Women’s Ashes smashes attendance & viewership records | Women’s Ashes 2023 attendances and viewership

In another win for women’s sport, the 2023 Women’s Ashes achieved outstanding attendance and viewership numbers. England pushed the mighty Australia team all the way, finishing level on points after sealing both the T20I and ODI series.

The hosts very nearly pulled off a remarkable coup of regaining the Ashes after losing the one-off Test, which they were very competitive in. They lost off the penultimate ball in the opening T20I and took the second ODI to the final ball, where they lost by just three runs.

Clearly, fans were enthralled and are right behind the England team. The 2023 edition of the Ashes left 2019 for dead in terms of supporters watching at the ground as well as on broadcasts and social media.

Below are some of the numbers released by England Cricket in the aftermath of the closely-fought battle between two great rivals.

Total attendance of 110,000 across the 2023 Women’s Ashes series

The Test, three T20Is and three ODIs saw a total attendance of 110,000. This is 4.5 times more than the 2019 Ashes series.

Also, all three ODIs were sell outs. This is the first-ever England Women’s ODI series to sell out, with full crowds at Bristol, Southampton and Taunton respectively.

5.3 million viewers on live TV & 47 million video views

The 2023 Women’s Ashes series reached 5.3 million viewers on live TV, more than double 2019’s number. Also, all women’s Ashes highlights videos on the England & Wales Cricket Board YouTube channel had a total of approximately 8.14 million views at 20th July, along with two million viewers tuning into BBC TV highlights.

In addition, the series drew in 47 million video views across all of England Cricket’s social media outlets.

33.5% of ticket buyers were women

One of the key objectives of elite women’s sport is to inspire the next generation of girls. Crowds were full of young fans. Also, it is clear that the series engaged the female audience, with women purchasing over a third of the tickets sold.

Fans were greeted with a high standard of cricket right throughout the 2023 Women’s Ashes series. The women’s game continues to trend upwards. With England and other nations beginning to provide strong competition, the engagement is only going to improve further.

Both Australia and England now switch their focus to upcoming assignments. The Australians travel to Ireland for three ODIs starting Sunday July 21. England’s cricketers will soon begin their 2023 Hundred campaign before hosting Sri Lanka for three T20Is and three ODIs starting August 31.

Reactions to Zak Crawley’s 189 as England dominate

Cricket News: Reactions to Zak Crawley’s 189 as England dominate | Twitter reactions to Zak Crawley’s 189 off just 182 balls

Bazball truly is a gift that keeps on giving. The aggressive approach from England once again took the Australian bowlers by storm.

An unshackled Zak Crawley, thanks to the new fearless Bazball style of play, scored 189 off just 182 deliveries on day two of the third Test as he missed out on a terrific double ton by just 11 runs. He took advantage of overly straight bowling by the Australians early, and looked good for a big score once he got set despite some luck at times.

Indeed, Crawley never looked back after he got to his fifty. It was sheer carnage from lunch onwards. Joe Root came out all guns blazing as well. He notched up 84 off just 95 deliveries. The 226-run stand between Crawley and Root made the Australians look second rate, with the World Test Champions looking rattled for most of the day.

Australia were not as clinical in the field as they would have wanted, and some chances went begging. The pair kept finding the gaps seamlessly and were rarely troubled by the bowlers. The fair ease with which the duo cruised to their scores was an indictment of Australia’s incompetence, with the spotlight on their decision to leave out a specialist spinner and persistence of very defensive fields.

Reactions to Zak Crawley’s dominant 189, more Joe Root brilliance and Australian incompetence

Earlier, Chris Woakes completed his five-for and Moeen Ali, who was promoted to number three, also bagged a 50 and laid the platform for Root. Here is how Twitter reacted to Zak Crawley’s 189, the Root-Crawley partnership and more.

Major League Cricket action moves to Morrisville. And, Los Angeles Knight Riders are on their last legs. After three straight defeats, the team, headined by world class overseas talent, must win this clash to have any hope of reaching the playoffs.

Washington Freedom have gone about their business in efficient style. After nearly defending 144 against Seattle, the Washington attack rallied to defend 163 against Texas. Given LAKR have struggled for any consistency or fluency with the bat, Washington will see this as an excellent opportunity

WAF vs LAKR Possible Playing XIs

Washington Freedom: 1. Matthew Short, 2. Andries Gous (wk), 3. Mukhtar Ahmed, 4. Glenn Phillips, 5. Moises Henriques (c), 6. Obus Pienaar, 7. Marco Jansen, 8. Akeal Hosein, 9. Dane Piedt, 10. Saurabh Netravalkar, 11. Anrich Nortje

Los Angeles Knight Riders: 1. Jason Roy, 2. Unmukt Chand, 3. Nitish Kumar, 4. Rilee Rossouw, 5. Jaskaran Malhotra (wk), 6. Andre Russell, 7. Sunil Narine (c), 8. Corné Dry, 9. Adam Zampa, 10. Ali Khan, 11. Spencer Johnson

WAF vs LAKR Dream11 Prediction – Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Washington Freedom:

  • The talented Matthew Short was named man of the match in the last game thanks to his 50-ball 80. In all T20s this year, Short has struck 474 runs at an average of 31.6 and strike rate of 147.2.
  • Is this the day Glenn Phillips fires? He is averaging just 9.3 in seven franchise T20s this year.
  • Phillips has an excellent record against Adam Zampa in T20s: 22 balls, 42 runs, no dismissals. He has also never been dismissed by Andre Russell (17 balls, 23 runs).
  • Moises Henriques’ consistency will be key for Washington in the middle. In 11 T20s this year, Henriques is averaging 34.00 at a strike rate of 126.5 (272 runs).
  • Watch out for Marco Jansen against the struggling LAKR top order. He has dismissed Jason Roy once in seven balls in T20 cricket (four runs).
  • Anrich Nortje is a wicket-taking option to Jason Roy. He has dismissed the opener four times in 30 balls in all T20s (28 runs). Nortje also has good numbers against Russell: 19 balls, 22 runs, two dismissals.

Los Angeles Knight Riders:

  • Jason Roy made an immediate impact in his first game of the season. He slammed a 21-ball 45 against San Francisco.
  • In all T20s since the start of 2022, Rilee Rossouw has scored 1,293 runs at an average of 39.18 and strike rate of 167.05 in the first innings. When batting second, the average drops to 26.67 with a strike rate of 162.1.
  • It’s time LAKR send Andre Russell higher up the order. The all-rounder has hit 99 runs at a strike rate of 150, but has faced just 55 balls in three matches.
  • Sunil Narine can keep Glenn Phillips quiet. He has conceded just 50 runs off 42 balls against him, with one dismissal.
  • Adam Zampa is LAKR’s leading wicket-taker with six. He is striking every 11 deliveries. Also, Zampa has dismissed Matt Short once in 14 balls in T20s, conceding 20 in the process.

Other Stats and Facts

  • The consistent Saurabh Netravalkar is conceding less than six per over so far this season (total figures of 1/40 off seven overs).
  • Ali Khan is striking every 14 deliveries this tournament. But, he is conceding 11.05 per over.
  • Akeal Hosein will be key. The left-arm spinner has picked up three wickets at an economy of 7.50.

Church Street Park, Morrisville Pitch Report and Weather

This will be the first match at Morrisville. Conditions are cooler than the Grand Prairie Stadium with temperatures in the early 30s rather than touching 40.

In terms of the pitch, expect the captain who wins the toss to bowl given there are unknowns. In this image, the surface looks similar to the pitch to the Grand Prairie, where teams batting first dominated. But, given it’s a new pitch, there may be decent carry and either team may want to take advantage bowling first.

When is the IND vs PAK match in Asia Cup 2023?

Cricket News: When is the IND vs PAK match in Asia Cup 2023? | Details on Pakistan vs India in the 2023 Asia Cup

India and Pakistan will meet in the 2023 Asia Cup on September 2. The match will be played at Pallekele in Sri Lanka, a few days after the tournament begins on August 30 according to ESPNcricinfo.

The two Asian heavyweights are in Group A alongside Nepal. Pakistan, Bangladesh and current Asia Cup champions Sri Lanka are in Group B. The top two teams in each group will qualify for the Super Fours stage.

Both Pakistan and Sri Lanka will host matches after much deliberation on where the tournament will be located. Four will take place in Pakistan, while Sri Lanka will host the remaining nine according to the draft schedule put forward by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC).

A rare IND vs PAK ODI awaits in 2023

India-Pakistan tussles are now limited to multi-team tournaments, namely the ODI World Cup, T20 World Cup and Asia Cup. The last time the two teams met in an ODI was in the 2019 World Cup, where Rohit Sharma starred with 140 in an 89-run win for India.

There is a possibility India and Pakistan will meet three times in this tournament. They will meet on September 2 and could go head-to-head in the Super Fours and Final should they both qualify.

According to the draft schedule, Pakistan is slated to host one Super Fours match. Should both India and Pakistan progress to this stage, they will meet again in Kandy (Pallekele) on September 10.

The final schedule for the 2023 Asia Cup is expected to be finalised in the coming days.

Is the 2023 Ashes the closest ever Ashes series?

Cricket News: Ashes 2023 the closest series since 1907-08 | Is the 2023 Ashes the closest ever in Ashes history?

Numbers say the ongoing 2023 Ashes is turning out to be the most closely-competed one since the 1907-08 edition of the series. The slim margins of victory in each of the three games so far has given birth to this interesting fact.

Australia won the first two matches by two wickets and 43 runs in Edgbaston and Lord’s respectively. England emerged triumphant in the third Test by three wickets. Only in 1907-08 did three games of the Ashes occur where the victorious team claimed the win by less than 50 runs or by fewer than three wickets thrice.

What happened in the Ashes 1907-08?

That Ashes series was held in Australia. The hosts had won the first Test of that series by two wickets. The Three Lions came back to level the series with a one-wicket win in the second match. Finally, Australia sealed the series by 49 runs in the fifth Test in Sydney. Australia eventually dominated the series with a 4-1 scoreline.

Will the 2023 Ashes go down as the closest ever Ashes series?

The remaining two games of the series will be held at Old Trafford and The Oval starting from July 19 and July 27 respectively. The series hangs well in balance right now. The first and the third games of the series were remarkably close. The second game was bossed over by Australia, however, Ben Stokes’ stunning 155 in the fourth innings ensured that the home side was not completely dragged out of the contest.

As of now, it is difficult to make out which side the current series will go. Australia looked well settled to seal the Ashes. But, the setback in the previous game has given England enough headway to find their way back in the proceedings.

“We’ve kept the series alive and we just have to park everything from this week, but continue the way we play,” Stokes said after the game in Headingley.

If the weather holds up at Old Trafford, we could be heading to The Oval locked at 2-2. Who knows.

Australia predicted playing 11 for 4th Ashes Test

Cricket News: Australia predicted playing 11 for 4th Ashes Test | A look at Australia’s predicted playing 11 for Old Trafford Test

Australia have had some selection headaches to consider in the ten days following their defeat at Headingley. David Warner’s form and continued struggles against Stuart Broad is once again in the spotlight, and there is the question of how many all-rounders can fit in the XI.

On the eve of the fourth Ashes Test at Old Trafford, captain Pat Cummins confirmed Josh Hazlewood will replace Scott Boland. The latter has not had the impact many thought he would in England having only dismissed Zak Crawley (twice) in the series.

Also, Cummins confirmed David Warner will play. So, Australia will stick with the same top five.

Australia predicted 11 for 4th Ashes Test at Old Trafford

1. David Warner, 2. Usman Khawaja, 3. Marnus Labuschagne, 4. Steve Smith, 5. Travis Head, 6. Mitchell Marsh, 7. Alex Carey (wk), 8. Cameron Green, 9. Mitchell Starc, 10. Pat Cummins (c), 11. Josh Hazlewood

With Warner and Hazlewood confirmed, the final spot is likely to be between Cameron Green and Todd Murphy.

The former, who was a mainstay in Australia’s XI, missed the last Test due to a minor hamstring injury. Green could come in for Todd Murphy, who bowled just the two overs in the fourth innings at Headingley.

Green’s inclusion gives Australia a very lengthy batting lineup, and the spin duties can be passed onto Travis Head when needed.

However, coach Andrew McDonald, post Headingley, said Australia enjoy having the spinner. Conditions at Old Trafford may tempt Australia to play Murphy given the surface seems to lack a decent covering of grass. But, the weather forecast is for overcast conditions with periods of rain throughout the Test, so the seam bowlers can have a say.

“We like a spinner,” McDonald said. “We like to have a balanced attack and it gives you options, you can take pace out of the game and you become one dimensional … without the ability to turn to a spinner.

“We’ll have to assess that, but as it sits at the moment we do like to have the spinner in the team.”

Cummins, who spoke to Sports Entertainment Network (SEN) on the eve of the Test, said all options are possible.

When asked whether Australia could go without a specialist spin option, Cummins said “I think all options are open. They are the kind of things you discuss when you get into details of how you would use bowlers, in what situations. That helps with clarity of who the final batting or bowling lineup ends up being.”

A win or draw for Australia in this Test will seal the Ashes for the fourth straight series. With rain forecast on the final two days, England will have to play out of their skins to keep the series alive.

Image of Jasprit Bumrah in nets excites fans

Cricket News: Image of Jasprit Bumrah in nets excites fans | Jasprit Bumrah back training in the nets after long layoff

Indian speedster Jasprit Bumrah is returning to cricketing action soon as a picture of him bowling at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) nets in Bengaluru is going viral now.

Bumrah posted a short video on his socials on Tuesday morning and captioned it tagging the official handle of the Indian cricket team. The pacer has been sidelined since September 2022, when he last played in the T20I series against Australia. He has undergone multiple rehabilitations since then due to successive injuries that have repeatedly delayed his comeback.

India fans excited to see Jasprit Bumrah in the nets

In the meanwhile, the 29-year-old has missed multiple important assignments in the past year. He sat out of the ICC Men’s T20I World Cup in Australia in October-November. Post that, he was slated to come back into the team as India hosted Sri Lanka and New Zealand in limited-overs’ assignments in January.

However, that was not to be and even his return in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy was pushed back. Many expected him to at least feature in the final two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy but suddenly news broke out that Bumrah will be out of action for the entire duration of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 as well.

India will desperately need Bumrah back in the squad for the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup later this year. The team has underperformed in ICC tournaments for a decade, and they will need their pace bowling spearhead in the ranks to lift a home World Cup for the second time after 2011.

Bumrah debuted in ODIs in 2016 and he has played 72 matches in the 50-over format so far. He has taken 121 wickets at an economy rate of 4.64, making him one of the greats in the format.

It’s go time for Los Angeles Knight Riders (LAKR). After two defeats, including a horror 50 all-out in a game they looked liked winning against MI New York, LAKR must win this match with the MLC playoffs looming.

San Francisco Unicorns (SFU) are better placed. After a magnificent display by Corey Anderson that led the team to victory against New York, the power of the team batting first was on show again as the Unicorns fell short against Seattle. Every player in the top six crossed double-figures, with only Shadab Khan (37) making more than 28. Indeed, this is an area of focus today.

For LAKR, their death bowling and top order batting is in the spotlight. They have mustered just 162 runs in two matches so far, with only Unmukt Chand (26) making double figures in their horror show a few nights ago. The time is now to turn it all around otherwise an early exit awaits next week.

  • Finn Allen has a strike rate of 253.33 this season, but has faced just 15 balls. If he gets through the powerplay, watch out.
  • Can Marcus Stoinis overcome the slow surface? The all-rounder has hit just 21 runs at a strike rate of 77.77 so far.

Australia tour of New Zealand schedule 2024

Cricket News: Australia tour of New Zealand schedule 2024 | Australia to tour New Zealand for T20Is and Tests in early 2024

For the first time since 2016, Australia will play Test cricket in New Zealand.

The tour, pencilled in for February and March 2024, will start with a T20I in Wellington on February 21. The next two games of the series will be in Auckland on February 23 and February 25 respectively. These matches will give shape to the two teams ahead of the ICC Men’s T20I World Cup in the United States of America (USA) and West Indies (WI) later that year.

The two Tests will be played in Wellington and Christchurch respectively. The first Test will last from February 29-March 4, followed by the second match, scheduled for March 8-12. This Test series will be Australia’s first assignment after the home summer that will round off in January.

Veteran opener David Warner has revealed plans to bring curtains down on his red-ball career after the SCG Test against Pakistan. The New Zealand series could see a new full-time opener for the Australians, which will be a test against a potent Black Caps attack.

Australia had whitewashed New Zealand 2-0 during their last tour to the country eight years ago. They played under the captaincy of Steven Smith back then and they emerged victorious in the first Test by an innings and 52 runs. They then won the second game by seven wickets as Adam Voges was named the Man of the Series for his splendid performances with the bat.

Australia has dominated New Zealand in Tests both home and away. The Kiwis have won only eight games out of the 60 between the teams.

Australia has emerged victorious in 34 instances whereas 18 matches have resulted in a draw.

Australia 2024 tour of New Zealand schedule

First T20I: Wellington, February 21

Second T20I: Auckland, February 23

Third T20I: Auckland, February 25

First Test: Wellington, February 29-March 4
