BAN vs ENG 1st T20 Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report

BAN vs ENG 1st T20 Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report | BAN vs ENG 1st T20 Dream11 Prediction Today | Chattogram Pitch Report

Bangladesh pushed England in the first ODI and then won the third, but attention now moves to a format they struggle with. The Tigers have won just six of 20 T20Is since the start of last year, with two coming against Zimbabwe, two against UAE and one against Netherlands. The next T20 World Cup, to be played in 2024, is already approaching quite quickly, so any chance to build confidence is crucial.

And there is no better test than the current world champions. Despite England missing some regulars due to scheduling challenges, the tourists still possess some world class talent. Jos Buttler is a huge threat at the top as always, while the all-round duo of Moeen Ali and Sam Curran promises to be very dangerous in the middle.

Expect England to go hard at Bangladesh. How will the Tigers respond? We shall see.

BAN vs ENG 1st T20 2023 Possible Playing XIs

Tamim Iqbal has retired from T20Is. Bangladesh could hand chances to any or all of Towhid Hridoy, Rony Talukdar and Tanvir Islam, who all had strong BPL 2023 campaigns.

Bangladesh: 1. Rony Talukdar, 2. Litton Das, 3. Najmul Hossain Shanto, 4. Shakib Al Hasan (c), 5. Towhid Hridoy, 6. Afif Hossain, 7. Nurul Hasan (wk), 8. Mehidy Hasan Miraz, 9. Taskin Ahmed, 10. Hasan Mahmud/Tanvir Islam, 11. Mustafizur Rahman

England have a limited number of specialist batting options in their squad. So, Sam Curran could be named to bat as high as six.

England: 1. Jos Buttler (c & wk), 2. Phil Salt, 3. Dawid Malan, 4. Ben Duckett, 5. Moeen Ali, 6. Sam Curran, 7. Chris Jordan, 8. Jofra Archer, 9. Adil Rashid, 10. Reece Ropley/Chris Woakes/Mark Wood, 11. Rehan Ahmed

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Bangladesh:

  • Shakib Al Hasan was at his all-round best in the third ODI (75 & 4/35). He has a strong T20 record at Chattogram, with 712 runs (avg. 37.47, SR 148.64) and 29 wickets (econ. 6.24, SR 19.66).
  • Rony Talukdar hit 425 runs at an average of 35.41 and strike rate of 129.17 in BPL 2023.
  • Towhid Hridoy also had a strong BPL. He hit 403 runs at an excellent average of 36.63 and strike rate of 140.41.
  • Taskin Ahmed has the second-most wickets in T20s at Chattogram (25). He strikes every 16.96 deliveries on average.
  • Mustafizur Rahman has similar numbers on this ground, with 21 scalps at a strike rate of 17.10 (econ. 8.26).

England:

  • Jos Buttler has a strong T20I record in Asia. He has smashed 874 runs in 36 innings at an average of 33.61 and strike rate of 143.04.
  • Dawid Malan hit a superb century in the first ODI and has an average touching 40 in T20Is (1,517 runs, avg. 39.92, SR 135.81).
  • Moeen Ali could have a role with the ball given Bangladesh have a number of left-handers. He took 2/18 against them in the 2021 T20 World Cup.
  • Between overs seven and 20 in all T20s since the start of 2022, Moeen has smashed 1,125 runs at an average of 26.16 and strike rate of 153.69.
  • Sam Curran was player of the tournament in the T20 World Cup and will be aiming to bounce back after a difficult SA20 campaign. He took six wickets in two ODIs against Bangladesh.
  • Adil Rashid took the most wickets in the ODI series. He took eight wickets at an average of 14.12 and economy of 4.70.

Other Stats and Facts

  • This will be just the second T20I between the teams. England won the first meeting by eight wickets in the 2021 T20 World Cup.
  • Najmul Hossain Shanto scored the most runs in BPL 2023: 15 inns, 516 runs, avg. 39.69, SR 116.74.
  • Jofra Archer took five wickets in two ODIs on this tour. He conceded just 3.82 per over.

Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium Chattogram Pitch Report and Weather

The Chattogram surface usually isn’t as tricky to bat on as Mirpur. The bowlers did have a say in the final ODI between these teams, but T20 surfaces are often truer at this venue.

In 12 domestic T20 games in January, the average first innings score was 162, with the team batting second winning seven.

A clear and hot afternoon is forecast, with a top of about 33 degrees.

GUJ-W vs RCB-W Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report: WPL 2023 Match 6 | GG-W vs RCB-W Dream11 Prediction Today | Brabourne Pitch Report

It’s nearing must-win territory for Gujarat Giants and Royal Challengers Bangalore, who both have net run rates worse than -0.300. It has certainly been a difficult start for each side, with hopes of a strong tournament hit hard early.

Beth Mooney’s injury as well as the late collapse against UP Warriorz has added a real sour taste for Gujarat. Bangalore’s bowling has looked toothless so far, taking just three wickets in two matches at an economy rate of 11.17. With a lot on the line here, it is a test of temperament, as well as skill, for these two teams.

WPL 2023 Match 6: GUJ-W vs RCB-W Possible Playing XIs

Beth Mooney is unlikely to play. In fact, she may not even feature in the rest of WPL 2023. “I feel we may have to replace (Beth) Mooney. The scans that came out today, did not look that great,” said Rachael Haynes.

Gujarat Giants: 1. Sabbhineni Meghana, 2. Sophia Dunkley, 3. Harleen Deol, 4. Annabel Sutherland, 5. Ashleigh Gardner, 6. Sushma Verma (wk), 7. Dayalan Hemalatha, 8. Sneh Rana (c), 9. Tanuja Kanwar, 10. Kim Garth, 11. Mansi Joshi

Royal Challengers Bangalore: 1. Smriti Mandhana (c), 2. Sophie Devine, 3. Disha Kasat, 4. Ellyse Perry, 5. Heather Knight, 6. Risha Ghosh (wk), 7. Kanika Ahuja, 8. Shreyanka Patil, 9. Megan Schutt, 10. Renuka Singh, 11. Preeti Bose

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Gujarat Giants:

  • Sophia Dunkley is crucial in the absence of Mooney. After a strong 2021-22 period (992 runs, avg. 28.34), Dunkley has scored just 91 runs in six T20s this year (avg. 15.17). Now is the time to fire.
  • Ashleigh Gardner, player of the tournament in the recent T20 World Cup, showed glimpses against UP Warriorz (25 off 19 balls & 0/34). The class all-rounder can deliver at any stage.
  • It was a tough finish at the death for Annabel Sutherland against UP Warriorz (3.5-0-41-1). But, with her role up the order and key overs with the ball, she is always a factor in how the result might play out.
  • Kim Garth is coming off a magnificent five-wicket haul in the last match. Her ability to swing the ball away from the right-handers and into the left-handers will be interesting to watch.

Royal Challengers Bangalore:

  • Smriti Mandhana has the third-most runs of any player (male or female) at Brabourne. She has scored 264 runs in eight matches at an average of 37.71 and strike rate of 152.60.
  • Like Mandhana, Sophie Devine has looked in decent touch without making the big score yet. The Kiwi has struck 16 and 14 at a strike rate of 136.36, with five fours in 16 deliveries.
  • Ellyse Perry enjoys batting at Brabourne. The great all-rounder has scored 246 runs in seven innings at an average of 49.20 and strike rate of 154.72.
  • Heather Knight has shown glimpses of her best in WPL 2023, with 34 and two-for in the first match.
  • Annabel Sutherland has been dismissed twice by left-arm orthodox in WPL 2023. So, RCB may look to use Preeti Bose against her.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Harleen Deol kept things ticking along for Gujarat with an important 32-ball 46 against UP Warriorz.
  • Smriti Mandhana has looked good at times in WPL 2023, without going on to make the big score: 35 and 23.
  • Megan Schutt is wicketless so far in this tournament, but has played well with the bat.

Brabourne Stadium Mumbai Pitch Report and Weather

Brabourne is a belter of a batting pitch. RCB were way below par against Mumbai, where they scored just 155 and were beaten with a massive 34 balls and nine wickets to spare. In the first game, Delhi hammered 223 against RCB.

The question for Mandhana’s team is whether they can stem the flow of runs. The question also applies to Gujarat, who have conceded big totals themselves.

Another warm and clear evening is forecast in Mumbai.

Rohit Sharma considers Nathan Lyon as one of the best overseas bowlers to tour India

Cricket News: Rohit Sharma considers Nathan Lyon as one of the best overseas bowlers to tour India | Rohit praises Lyon ahead of 4th Test

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma hailed Nathan Lyon as the topmost overseas bowler to tour India in recent times after the off-spinner’s 11 wickets across both innings in the third Test helped the visitors pull the series back 2-1.

Sharma admitted that he has not played against greats like Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne, but explained that Lyon’s relentless accuracy makes tasks difficult for batsmen to counter him on such pitches.

“I think he should be at the top in my opinion. Obviously, I have not played guys like Murali or Shane Warne. But, to me, in the current crop, Lyon is probably the number one bowler from the overseas to come and play in India. He has got so much consistency in his line and length,” Sharma explained.

He added, “He doesn’t give you too much. Someone bowling with that much accuracy, you have got to try and do something different, find your ways of scoring runs against him because you know that he is not going to give you anything easy.”

Lyon picked eight wickets in the second innings to help Australia bowl India out for 163. He especially made it difficult for them to attack him as India looked to get some quick runs under their belt to put forth a challenging fourth-innings total in front of the Australian unit.

Sharma appreciated Lyon’s fearlessness against getting hit for boundaries and pointed at that as an important trait that has enabled him to succeed in India.

“Now obviously he has played so much cricket as well for Australia; very experienced bowler. He is not afraid of getting hit, that is something that I have noticed. That gives him a lot of confidence and that gives the captain a lot of confidence that I have got a guy who can just not worry about anything,” the captain said.

“I know that he is going to pitch it there and let the pitch do the rest for him. When you have got someone like that, it gives you a lot of confidence as a whole,” Sharma signed off.

DEL-W vs UP-W Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report: WPL 2023 Match 5 | DC-W vs UP-W Dream11 Prediction Today | DY Patil Pitch Report

Delhi Capitals enjoyed the perfect start to WPL 2023. The top four, led by Shafali Verma and Meg Lanning, produced the goods, smashing the RCB attack to all parts on Sunday. Then, American Tara Norris, who has had quite the cricketing journey, made headlines with a wonderful five-wicket haul.

Now, Lanning’s Capitals will take on fellow Australian Alyssa Healy’s UP Warriorz, who also got off to a winning start but in contrasting fashion.

Grace Harris showed why she is one of the great finishers in women’s cricket against Gujarat. The Warriorz needed 53 off 18 balls, and Harris, along with Sophie Ecclestone, pulled it off in incredible fashion. However, more will be expected of the top and middle order, with only Kiran Navgire making a 15+ score in the top five.

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

  • Shafali Verma also comes into this clash in form. The star youngster belted 84 off 45 balls against RCB.
  • Verma has struck scores of 34 and 21 at a strike rate of 166.67 in two T20 matches on this ground.
  • Marizanne Kapp struggled with the bat in the group stage of the World Cup, but is now coming into her groove. The South African all-rounder has scored 39* (17), 11 (11) and 27* (13) in her past three matches.
  • Jemimah Rodrigues struck 43 (24) in the WC semi-final against Australia, followed by 22* (15) in DC’s WPL opener. She will be key in the middle overs especially.
  • Tara Norris made headlines with her five-wicket haul on Sunday. With lowish bounce in the surfaces, Norris’ accuracy will be vital once again.

UP Warriorz:

  • Alyssa Healy has made scores of 37, 25 and 7 on this ground at a strike rate of 150. If she gets going, watch out.
  • Kiran Navgire was the only Warriorz top five player to hit a 20+ score in the last match. She made 53 off 45 balls.
  • Tahlia McGrath will be aiming to bounce back after a golden duck. She averages 61.50 with a strike rate of 142.69 in international T20s, and can replicate that kind of form here.
  • Grace Harris blew viewers away with her 26-ball 59* on Sunday. In five T20 innings so far this year, Harris has slammed 94 runs at an average of 31.33 and strike rate of 204.35.
  • Since the start of 2022, Sophie Ecclestone has taken 68 wickets in 48 innings at an economy of just 5.84.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Delhi’s 223/2 on Sunday is the second-highest score in women’s T20 cricket.
  • Deepti Sharma has taken three wickets in as many T20s on this ground (econ. 7.67, SR 20.33).
  • The winner of this match will join Mumbai Indians in the top two.

DY Patil Sports Academy Pitch Report and Weather

Mumbai Indians smashed 207 on this ground batting first, followed by UP Warriorz’ superb chase – both against Gujarat. Expect another good surface for batting, but with some possible assistance for spinners as the game progresses.

Indore effect? No instructions from Team India for Ahmedabad pitch for 4th Test

Cricket News: Indore effect? No instructions from Team India for Ahmedabad pitch for 4th Test | Ahmedabad pitch report & update

The Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA), hosting the fourth India-Australia Test in Ahmedabad, is focused on preparing a balanced track after the furore created by the Indore pitch for the third game this week.

Speaking to the Press Trust of India (PTI), a GCA source revealed that they have not received any instructions from the local team management and that they are working on dishing out a ‘normal track’ as has been the case throughout the season.

“We haven’t received any instructions from the Indian team management and our local curators are preparing a normal track as we have always done through the season,” a state association source informed PTI.

The last Ranji Trophy game in the Narendra Modi Stadium took place in January between Gujarat and Railways. The latter had scored 508 in their first innings and Gujarat notched above 200 in both their essays of play. Though the home side suffered an innings defeat, the nature of the surface suited batsmen and the pitch is not expected to turn out to be too different this time around either.

“Obviously, last few days the BCCI’s grounds and pitches committee instruct the local curator. But, certainly, from our end our endeavour is to produce a good Test match pitch,” the source further added.

It is likely that the curators will be cautious against dishing out a square turner track following the consequences of the third Test.

The pitch in Indore churned out turn of 4.8 degrees on the first day of the game itself and the Indian batsmen struggled to tackle the Australian spin troika in both the innings. It was handed three demerit points by International Cricket Council (ICC) match referee Chris Broad who assessed that the ‘very dry’ track did not provide a balance between the bat and ball and favoured spinners right from the beginning of the game.

MI-W vs RCB-W Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11: WPL 2023 Match 4 | MI-W vs RCB-W Dream11 Prediction Today | Brabourne Pitch Report

It’s go time for Royal Challengers Bangalore after a hammering at the hands of Delhi Capitals. The nature of the defeat, which has seen their net run rate stand at -0.300, means there is little room for error in a competitive league. The standard of the WPL has been outstanding so far, and RCB need to display some of that here.

It certainly won’t be easy, though. Mumbai Indians lit up the stage on the tournament’s opening night, winning by a massive 143 runs against Gujarat Giants. The sheer depth of the Mumbai side, led by the magnificent Harmanpreet Kaur, will be tough for any team to overcome. The key for Kaur’s side is a strong start, given that early wickets is RCB’s best chance of keeping Mumbai’s middle order as quiet as possible.

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Mumbai Indians:

  • Harmanpreet Kaur is in superb touch. She has hit 52 (34) and 65 (30) in her past two T20s. At Brabourne, she has scored 191 runs in seven innings at an average of 31.83 and strike rate of 114.37.
  • Hayley Matthews had an excellent T20 World Cup campaign (130 runs, avg. 43.33 & four wickets) and started WPL 2023 with a bang thanks to 47 (31) against Gujarat.
  • Nat Sciver-Brunt is always a threat with bat and ball. The star all-rounder hit 23 (18) and took 2/5 in the WPL opener.
  • Same with Amelia Kerr. She had the dream game with 45* (24) and 2/12, soon after taking six wickets (econ. 5.05) and scoring 113 runs in the T20 World Cup.
  • Issy Wong’s pace is always a factor. She took 1/7 in three overs against Gujarat, including the big wicket of Ashleigh Gardner.
  • Saika Ishaque starred with 4/11 in the WPL 2023 opener.

Royal Challengers Bangalore:

  • Smriti Mandhana started well for RCB. The captain will be looking to build on her 23-ball 35 yesterday.
  • Also, Mandhana has strong numbers in T20s at Brabourne: 8 inns, 254 runs, avg. 36.28, SR 152.

  • Heather Knight to bat up the order? The England captain batted down at six yesterday, where she made the second-highest score for RCB (34 off 21 balls).
  • Richa Ghosh is key. The keeper-batter scored 136 runs in the recent World Cup, where she was dismissed just twice.
  • Can Megan Schutt lead the RCB attack effectively? She recently took the second-most wickets in the T20 World Cup (10) at an average of 13.50 and economy of 6.13.
  • Schutt at Brabourne: 7 inns, 10 wickets, avg. 17.80, econ. 6.94.

Other Stats and Facts

  • Sciver-Brunt recently struck 216 runs in five innings at an average of 72.00 and strike rate of 141.17 in the T20 World Cup. Also, she averages 51.67 in five matches at Brabourne (155 runs).
  • Renuka Singh took seven wickets in the T20 World Cup, including 5/15. She is capable of producing memorable performances.
  • Sophie Devine has made scores of 0, 16, 0, 3* and 14 in her past five T20s.

Brabourne Stadium Mumbai Pitch Report and Weather

Expect another belter of a surface at a ground that favours batting. A good batting pitch and smallish boundaries is often on the menu, on show yesterday as Delhi piled on 223 against RCB.

The average first innings score here in WT20Is is 185 runs. Chasing sides have won 50% of the games.

A very warm and clear evening is forecast. Dew is a possibility.

Mumbai Indians look very strong. They look good for another win.

Smith not keen on full-time captaincy despite Indore masterclass

Smith not keen on full-time captaincy despite Indore masterclass | Steve Smith says no to full time captaincy

Australian talisman Steven Smith has dismissed full-time captaincy ambitions after leading the team to an emphatic comeback victory against India in Indore on Friday. Standing in as the skipper for Pat Cummins, who returned back home to attend to his ailing mother, Smith was in-charge of a full-blown Australian onslaught in the third Test.

He manoeuvred the spin bowling options available to him brilliantly by keeping newcomer Matthew Kuhnemann in the XI who picked five wickets to help bundle India out for 109 in the first innings.

The visitors looked down and out after thoroughly uninspiring outings in the first two Tests. However, they sprung a surprise in this game that many believed to be a result of Smith’s more proactive and ingenuity as a skipper. Post the game though, the 33-year-old warded off any suggestions of returning back as the permanent skipper at any point in the future.

“My time is done. It’s Pat’s team now. I have obviously been able to stand in this week, obviously in tough circumstances with Patty going home. Our thoughts are still with him back home,” Smith mentioned, as quoted by the Times of India (TOI). He added, “But India is a part of the world I love captaining … it is probably my favourite place in the world to captain.”

It is unarguable that Smith has been one of the more impressive Australian skippers to have toured India in recent times. The Michael Clarke-led side was whitewashed 4-0 by India in the Border-Gavaskar series in 2013 whereas Cummins looked completely out of sorts in the two games he captained in this series.

However, Smith’s team in 2017 had really given the Indian side a run for their money. They had won the first Test of that series in Pune and contested well in each of the remaining games despite their losses in Bengaluru and Dharamshala.

Australia defeated India by nine wickets to win the third Test in Indore on Friday and thereby qualified for the World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23 final at the Oval in June. The visitors sparked an incredible comeback powered by an impactful performance by debutant Matthew Kuhnemann and veteran spinner Nathan Lyon.

The pitch in the Holkar Stadium received a poor rating by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Steven Smith-led side landed a fatal blow to the Indian team’s prospects by outperforming them in all departments especially after the drubbing they received in the first two Tests. Here are some of the most pertinent reactions on Twitter following India’s loss in the Indore Test.

Indian skipper was adamant on defending the Indore track irrespective of the criticism that it received from all quarters. He insisted that spin bowling and depth in the batting line-up are India’s strengths and that the team is interested in playing on surfaces that suit them on those fronts.

“Honestly speaking, these are the kind of pitches we want to play on. We want to play to our strength, and that strength is spin bowling and that batting depth. And everyone uses that advantage outside [India], so what’s wrong in that?” Rohit remarked.

He added, “We have got to do that as well, especially when we are getting results. If we were not getting the results, I would think otherwise, but I think we are playing well, we are getting the results that we want

Meanwhile, all the focus now shifts to the fourth Test starting in Ahmedabad from March 9 onwards. India will straightaway make it to the WTC final if they win that game. If the game ends in an Australian victory or a draw, then India’s chances for the same will rely on Sri Lanka not whitewashing New Zealand 2-0 in their series starting from March 9 in the Kiwi backyard.

After a very long wait, the Women’s Premier League is finally here. There are a total of five teams, with players from all around the globe participating in the showpiece tournament. A total of 22 matches will be played including the playoffs. Gujarat Giants will lock horns with the Mumbai Indians women in the historic first game.

Gujarat Giants have the likes of Beth Mooney, Ashleigh Gardner, Harleen Deol, Sophia Dunkley, Kim Garth, Annabel Sutherland and Sneh Rana as their big names. They have some good batters and quality all-rounders but they look a little light in the pace bowling department and lack experienced domestic pacers. Deandra Dottin is ruled out of the tournament and it is a huge loss for Gujarat, but they have an excellent core of overseas players who need to perform consistently for them to do well.

Mumbai Indians, meanwhile, have a strong line-up. The likes of Harmanpreet Kaur, Natalie Sciver-Brunt, Amelia Kerr, Hayley Matthews and Heather Graham form a very strong core. However, they also lack a bit in the pace bowling department as both Pooka Vastrakar and Natalie Sciver-Brunt are in not the best of form with the ball. Heather Graham will be their lead pacer. They have an explosive batting unit with good depth. Mumbai will be eyeing a win to start off their journey in the WPL.

WPL 2023 Match 1: GUJ-W vs MI-W Match Prediction – Who will win?

Mumbai Indians have a very strong side with excellent depth in both batting and bowling. They are expecting to win this game.

The lowest Ashes scores posted in England in recent memory

2023 will see the oldest rivalry in all of cricket return as Australia travel to England to contest the Ashes series. The most recent series took place down under and ended with a resounding 4-0 victory for the hosts. Australia will be looking to retain the urn on foreign soil for the second consecutive time; something they haven’t achieved since the turn of the millennium when the likes of Shane Warne and Glen McGrath were at their peak.

But since former New Zealand wicketkeeper batsman Brendon McCullum took over as England’s head coach last summer, his side have gone from strength to strength. His captain, Ben Stokes, is leading brilliantly, and the duo are aiming to bring cricketing glory back to England.

When Australia hosts the Ashes, they tend to dominate. England haven’t won a series down under in over a decade, and the aggregate score since they last won a Test in Australia is 13-0. But when the series takes place on English soil, the series tend to be tightly contested.

Also, the dreary weather in the UK can cause swing bowlers to have an absolute field day, resulting in some paltry scores posted. Here are the two lowest totals posted in an English Ashes Series since 2005.

Broad’s Trent Bridge Masterclass

The 2015 Ashes Series was on a knife-edge as we headed into the fourth Test at Trent Bridge. England held a slender 2-1 lead however, Australia had flexed their muscles in recent Tests and managed to pick up a whopping 405-run victory in the second Test at Lord’s. England knew, however, that victory in Nottingham would rip the Ashes away from their biggest rivals.

On the first morning of the first Test, the clouds formed over Trent Bridge, and whoever won the Test knew that opting to field could result in a healthy first innings lead. Luckily for the hosts, it was they who won the toss, and captain Joe Root happily elected to field. Openers Chris Rogers and David Warner came to the crease knowing that they were in for a tough time, however, they couldn’t have known just how tough things were about to be.

Rogers was duly dismissed after just three balls, and three balls later danger man Steve Smith was removed, both victims of the brilliant Stuart Broad. On the second ball of his spell, Mark Wood dismissed Warner, and England had the tourists reeling at 10/3 after just eight balls. Brilliant Broad could smell blood, and he sprung into action.

Broad went on a rampage in the 2015 Ashes

Shaun Marsh was the next to depart, caught at slip by Ian Bell after another wicked delivery. Then it was the turn of the hapless Adam Voges who nicked another stunning delivery by Broad to Ben Stokes at slip. The current England captain flew to his right and took a stunning catch to leave Australia at 21/5.

Captain Michael Clarke would survive just 15 balls before Broad removed him, then Steven Finn picked up his first and only wicket when he clean bowled wicketkeeper Peter Nevill for just 2 runs. Australia were now 33/7 and in real trouble of being humiliated. Mitchell Johnson managed to hit a quickfire 13 – the best score of any Australian batsman – however both he and Mitchell Starc were removed within three balls of each other, once again by Stuart Broad.

Tailenders Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon managed to post 13 runs between them before Broad had Lyon caught behind leaving Australia all out for a measly 60 runs. Broad ended the session with career-best figures of eight wickets for just 15 runs and England eventually romped to victory by an innings and 78 runs.

Stokes Rescues England From the Brink

Just as was the case four years prior, the 2019 Ashes Series was also on knife edge as we headed into the third Test. Australia led 1-0 prior to the showdown at Headingley and they knew that if they managed to win this Test, they would retain the Ashes on English soil for the first time since 2001. They couldn’t have wished for a better start when they had England bowled all out for 67 on the opening day.

This time around, England once again won the toss and once again elected to field. They had Australia bowled all out for 179 and were feeling quietly confident of victory. But on the evening of the first day, everything that could go wrong did go wrong.

Australia’s brilliant bowling attack of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and James Pattinson was in devastating form. Openers Rory Burns and Jason Roy managed to survive until the fourth over, but once Cummins had the aforementioned Roy caught behind, the wheels began to come off for England. Captain Joe Root was gone for a second ball duck off the bowling of Hazlewood, and the Aussies began to fire.

Burns, Stokes, Joe Denly, and Jonny Bairstow would all fall in quick succession. England’s tail end did their best to survive the onslaught however, the dangerous Jos Buttler was removed and the writing was on the wall. Chris Woakes, Jofra Archer, and Jack Leach were all sent packing and the hosts finished 67 all out.

Thanks to the brilliance of Ben Stokes on day four, who smashed an unbeaten 135, England somehow managed to pick up the victory and keep the series alive.
