The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is looking to introduce the ‘impact player’ system in the Indian Premier League (IPL) from 2023 onwards. The tactical substitution concept will allow captains to replace a member of the playing XI with another player from the bench during the course of the game itself.

The topic was brought up in discussion during a meeting of the IPL Governing Council on Thursday and the franchises have been sent a note regarding the same as well.

IPL Impact Player rule details

Any team will be allowed to name four pre-decided substitutes and one of them can be introduced to the field. However, this change to the playing XI can only be made by or before the end of the 14th over of a team’s innings.

The impact player can only be brought in at the end of an over. There is an exception though. Provided that there is an injury in either team, the player could be introduced to the field after the fall of a wicket as well.

The player brought into the game freshly can bat and even bowl his entire quota of overs. On the other hand, the subbed out will be disallowed from taking any further part in the game, even not in the capacity of a substituted fielder.

“From IPL 2023 Season, a tactical/strategic concept will be introduced to add a new dimension to IPL, wherein one substitute player per team will be able to take a more active part in an IPL match. The regulations pertaining to the same will be issued shortly,” a note from the BCCI read, as reported by Business Today.

“The matter has been discussed at the IPL GC meeting and BCCI will share the details soon,” a source from an IPL franchise was quoted in a report by the Press Trust of India (PTI).

The BCCI had incidentally introduced this rule in the recently-concluded season of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Indian domestic cricket’s premier T20 competition, last month.

Below is the transcript of the Rahul press conference, which includes Bangladesh’s tight win, his form and Rishabh Pant’s removal from the squad.

On Bangladesh’s tight win…

KL Rahul: “That’s cricket, right? You have to expect the unexpected sometimes. We’ve seen it so many times; as long as cricket has been played I think these kinds of results keep happening. You’ve never won the game until the last ball or until the last run has been scored.

They [Bangladesh] fought really well, fought till the end. That innings from Mehidy… a couple of dropped chances as well, but he batted really well. Like I said, they fought till the end and they wanted it.”

On his innings of 73 off 70 balls…

KL Rahul: “It was just one of those days where out of everybody else I looked like I was timing the ball better, and the shots that I picked fortunately for me went to the boundary or every option that I took just went my way. Something that I’ve been working on even the last couple of sessions that we’ve been here in Bangladesh; the pitches even at the back have been quite similar to what we got in the middle today, so I tried to challenge myself.

All the preparation obviously happens before the game. Quite pleased with such innings; it really gives you joy as a batter because you are challenged and you have to really put your hand up when your team requires.

I enjoyed my batting today, but I ideally would have liked 30-40 more runs towards the end. I did fancy 230, 240. If I batted till the end… Siraj was batting well with me, so if I could have batted another ten overs and got 35-40 runs, it would have been the difference.”

On Mehidy’s innings and India’s mistakes…

KL Rahul: “Towards the end, it was only one way they [Bangladesh] could have won. I think Mehidy Hasan [Miraz] played a phenomenal innings and he took a few chances… took some big risks, which he had to at the end; he had to take those big risks and play those big shots. He found the boundary and when you only have 30-35 runs, one or two big shots also puts pressure on the opposition, and he did that really well.

Also, a couple of dropped chances didn’t help us. It happens in cricket and today I think Bangladesh like I said fought really hard until the end, and they’ve won the game today, but we made a few mistakes, so we’ll learn from it and come back stronger.”

On whether he feels Bangladesh understands ODI cricket better than other formats…

KL Rahul: “This is home for them so obviously playing here they understand their conditions a lot better. I don’t know, I haven’t played too many one-day games against Bangladesh. I’ve only played a few games… I remember 2019 World Cup, and I haven’t played against them too many times to answer that question.

But, whatever we’ve watched on TV and how they play at home, they obviously understand their conditions really well and they’re a really good team at home. Even away, they have always been a competitive team, and they challenge the opposition. Every team at this level is a good team and will always challenge each other. It’s international level, you have to be good to be at this level.”

On India’s injuries and depth…

KL Rahul: “Yes we do have a lot of injuries in our team which is unfortunate. But, having said that, the youngsters in the team have a lot of experience. Maybe IPL and they’ve played quite a lot of cricket, so it’s a good opportunity for them, and they’re all excited for whoever comes into the team. These are the games where you try out a few new players and unfortunately due to injuries, you have to field different players.

Having said that, it’s a good opportunity for all of them. We will learn as we play more cricket together, as they get more experienced, they’ll only get better. It’s all a learning experience, and we have a bigger goal in mind, and we need to keep getting better as individuals and as a team.”

On Rishabh Pant’s removal from the ODI squad and India’s keeping role…

KL Rahul: “Actually, we haven’t played a lot of ODIs in the last 6-7 months, but if you look at since 2020 or 21, I have kept wickets in the one-day format and I have batted at number four and five in the middle order. It’s a role that the team has asked me to do before, and when it comes to Rishabh, I’m not really aware to be honest. I just found out today in the dressing room that he has been released. I don’t know what the reasons are; the medical team will be in a better position to answer that question.

This is a role that the team has always has asked me to be ready for in white-ball cricket. I’ve done it before, and whenever the team wants me to play this role, I will play this role.

I didn’t see him [Pant] in the dressing room. We asked what happened and he has been released, but we had to focus on the game, so we did not ask too many questions.”

The auction for the 16th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to be held in Kochi on 23 December. A total of 991 players have put their name in the pool, which includes 185 internationally capped cricketers and a whopping 786 uncapped ones. 20 players belonging to associate cricketing nations have also put their name in the list.

Out of them, only 19 are capped Indian players whereas there are 166 capped international stars. There are 94 uncapped cricketers, including merely three foreigners, who were a part of the previous seasons of the IPL. 604 uncapped Indians make up for almost two-thirds of the entire auction pool but it remains to be seen whether they attract abundant interest from the franchises as most teams have only minor gaps to plug this time around. 

Here, let us see a breakdown of the players according to the price bracket that they have placed themselves in.

Rs 2 crore

Tom Banton, Sam Curran, Chris Jordan, Tymal Mills, Jamie Overton, Craig Overton, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Ben Stokes, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Cameron Green, Travis Head, Chris Lynn, Kane Williamson, Adam Milne, Jimmy Neesham, Rilee Rossouw, Rassie van der Dussen, Angelo Mathews, Jason Holder, Nicholas Pooran

The Rs 2 crore price band includes a host of England internationals who lifted the T20 World Cup in Australia this year. However, the key attraction will be in-form all-rounders like Sam Curran, Ben Stokes, Cameron Green and even Jason Holder to an extent. New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson and Caribbean star Nicholas Pooran, both released by the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), are a part of this list as well.

Rs 1.5 crore

Sean Abott, Riley Meredith, Jhye Richardson, Adam Zampa, Shakib Al Hasan, Harry Brook, Will Jacks, Dawid Malan, Jason Roy, Sherfane Rutherford

The Rs 1.5 crore bracket has some interesting games of players who are arguably unlikely to get picked by any of the sides in the auction. Most teams are already packed with their share of international stars and there are fewer probabilities of them going after names who aren’t necessarily big guns especially in a mini auction. The likes of Jason Roy, Dawid Malan, Shakib al Hasan and Sherfane Rutherford amongst others from this pool might not be the right fit for most of the teams under current circumstances and could very well end up being unsold at the end of the entire process.

Rs 1 crore

Meanwhile, the Rs 1 crore bracket comprises players who have a fairly better chance of being in the wishlist of multiple franchises’. For example, ex-Punjab Kings skipper Mayank Agarwal could be a great addition to the top-order of certain teams like SRH and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) whereas Manish Pandey, Kyle Jamieson, Rakheem Cornwall are some of the other names to keep an eye out on.

Afghan stars like Mohammad Nabi and Mujeeb ur Rahman can find some takers as well as Joe Root has also put his name in the mix after opting out of the auction for the last few years.

But overall, most teams are likely to target players belonging to the topmost bracket of Rs 2 crore along with inboarding some promising young stars who have made heads turn with their consistent and impressive performances in the on-going domestic season.

Bangladesh skipper Tamim Iqbal has been ruled out of the upcoming One Day International (ODI) series against India due to a groin injury. The setback has also put in doubt his participation in the Test series between the two countries slated to start off from 14th December in Chattogram.

The 33-year-old suffered this injury during a warm-up match on Wednesday. “Tamim has a Grade 1 strain on his right groin which has been confirmed following an MRI. We will maintain a conservative treatment protocol for him for two weeks after which his rehab will begin.”

“Unfortunately it means he will not be available for the ODI series and will be doubtful for the Test series,” Bangladesh team physio Beyjedul Islam Khan was quoted in a report by ESPNcricinfo.

Tamim Iqbal joins Taskin Ahmed on the sidelines

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has called up Shoriful Islam from their ‘A’ squad as a back-up for Iqbal. The board hasn’t named a replacement for the southpaw yet but the squad will be regretting another key player biting the dust for this ODI series after Taskin Ahmed was ruled out of the first ODI on 4th December in Mirpur due to a back injury.

The 27-year-old pacer has been taking a pain-killer injection to cure the injury that he suffered during a Bangladesh Cricket League (BCL) match on 20th November.

This follows the shoulder setback that ruled him out of international action earlier this year. Ahmed has come up as a prominent force in the pace bowling department since his comeback to international cricket in 2021. In 2022, he has taken 12 wickets in nine ODIs at an impressive economy rate of 4.88.

The first two ODIs will be played in Mirpur on 4th and 7th December, with the final one to be played in Chattogram on 10th December.

“I am a strong believer that an Indian should coach the cricket team. There has to be emotions involved. We give a lot of importance to foreign coaches. They only come here and make money and they vanish,” he added, according to a video that the former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) skipper shared on his Instagram handle.

In his 13-year-long international career, Gambhir played under the tutelage of multiple international coaches like John Wright, Gary Kirsten and Duncan Fletcher. The southpaw even played an instrumental role in helping India lift the 2011 One Day International (ODI) World Cup under Kirsten’s watch.

Gambhir spoke about the emotional aspect of the game, indicating that only a native coach can resonate with the sheer love that Indians carry for the game.

“Emotions are involved in sports. And the only people who can be emotional about Indian cricket or Indian sports, are people who have represented their country. So whether it is now Rahul Dravid, before that Ravi Shastri and Anil Kumble, I hope this trend continues,” Gambhir explained.

He further quipped, “You ask Rahul Dravid, he will be more passionate than all those other guys. Wish I had played under Dravid or Shastri or Kumble.”

Gambhir actually did play under Kumble’s stewardship for a short while made he made a brief comeback into the Test team during England’s tour to India in October 2016.

England’s 506/4 is the highest number of runs scored on a day one of a Test match. Incredibly, play ended 15 overs early due to bad light with Brook (101* off 81 balls) and Ben Stokes (32* off 15 balls) keen to flatten Pakistan’s bowlers even further.

The highest number of runs on any day of Test cricket is 588/6 by England against India at Manchester in 1936. There is little doubt that England would have beaten that in Rawalpindi.

England’s 2022 team broke a 122-year record. The previous best was Australia’s 494/6 against South Africa way back in 1910. Warren Bardsley (132 off 150 balls) and Clem Hill (191 off 200 balls) took South Africa’s bowlers to the cleaners en route a victory by an innings and 114 runs for the hosts.

Speaking of double centuries by Australian captains, the great Sir Don Bradman smashed 244 off 271 balls on a remarkable day at The Oval in 1934. Opener Bill Ponsford also hit a double century (266) off a total of 422 balls. Incredibly, Australia scored 701 and went on to win by a massive 562 runs.

Two years later, England belted 471/8d in one day against India. The great Wally Hammond hit 217, supported by Stan Worthington’s 128. The hosts went on to win by nine wickets after chasing the small target of 64 with ease.

4. Major League Baseball (MLB): US$10.93 million per match

MLB signed a new broadcast deal for the 2022-28 cycle totalling US$12.24 billion with partners ESPN, FOX and TBS. With a total of 1,134 games over seven seasons, the broadcast value per match stands at approximately US$10.93 million.

3. English Premier League (EPL): US$11.23 million per match

The EPL is one of the most popular football leagues on the planet. The league generates approximately US$5.3 billion in revenue annually. Also, between 2022 and 2025, the broadcast value per match is US$11.23 million, which is the third-highest in the world.

2. Indian Premier League (IPL): US$15.1 million per match

The IPL is second for highest broadcast value per match. Formed in 2008, the league has experienced exponential growth in 15 years, with the first broadcast deal worth a total of $US1.1 billion over ten years. This then more-than-doubled to US$2.55 in 2018 and then again in 2022 (US$6.1 billion).

The 2023-27 cycle will have a total of 370 matches (74 per season), with a whopping US$15.11 million per match in broadcasting fees.
