  • What a performance it was by Cameron Green in the first T20I. The all-rounder turned opener smashed 61 at a strike rate of above 200. This included 16 off six balls against Umesh, 11 off five against Harshal and 21 off eight against Chahal.
  • Steve Smith’s new approach was on show in Mohali. He struck at 145.83, which is well above his career T20 strike rate of 122.60 against India. Overall vs IND, Smith has scored 141 runs in seven knocks at an average of 23.50.
  • Can Glenn Maxwell find his rhythm? Against India in India, Maxwell has scored 245 runs in six innings at an average of 49.00 and strike rate of 155.06. This includes a century.

According to BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, the Indian Premier League (IPL) will return to a full home and away season, as was the case pre-COVID-19. Since the start of the 2020 season, matches have been played at a limited number of venues in both India and UAE, with the majority played behind closed doors. 2023 is set to see a move towards normalcy when it comes to the IPL.

IPL 2023 schedule expected to more stadiums used as per pre-2020

Ganguly, in a note to the board’s affiliated state units, said that IPL 2023 will see teams have home and away games, as was the case pre-2020. For example, Royal Challengers Bangalore will return to the Chinnaswamy, Rajasthan Royals to Sawai Masingh, Chennai Super Kings to Chepauk and so on.

“The next season of men’s IPL will also go back to the home and away format with all ten teams playing their home matches at their designated venues,” Ganguly’s note read. The president’s note also included the Women’s IPL, set for early 2023 after the T20 World Cup ends in February in South Africa. This is in addition to a new girls’ under-15 one-day competition.

“The BCCI is currently working on the much-awaited Women’s IPL. We are expecting to start the first season early next year,” Ganguly wrote.

“We are glad to introduce a girls U15 One Day tournament from this season. Women’s cricket has seen phenomenal growth across the world and our national team has been performing well. This new tournament will create a pathway for our young girls to play at the national and international level.”

Also, according to ESPNcricinfo, a full domestic season in penciled in to start in early September. This includes the Duleep Trophy – in a zonal format – and the Irani Cup, in addition to the Ranji Trophy, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah is set to be drafted into the playing XI for the second T20I vs Australia in Nagpur on Friday. 

Bumrah has been recovering from a back injury over the last two months and was hence sidelined from the Asia Cup too. However, he was included in the squad for the ongoing series against Australia, leading to conjecture that he has recuperate completely. 

Surprisingly though, Bumrah sat out of the first T20I against the visitors in Mohali on Tuesday. Now, it has emerged that the team management had decided against rushing the pacer back into action straightaway after his long injury layoff. 

However, he will be back in the XI for the second game as India will look to fight back after facing a loss in the opening game of the series. 

Jasprit Bumrah set to play 2nd T20I against Australia in Nagpur

“The team management did not want to rush him and that is the reason for his absence in the Mohali game,” a source in the know of developments was quoted in a report by Cricbuzz. 

He added, “He has been bowling full blast at the nets and he is ready for action.”

Bumrah will reportedly replace Umesh Yadav in the playing XI in the second match in Nagpur. All-rounder Hardik Pandya, who struck a swashbuckling 71* in the first T20I, also opened up on Bumrah’s importance to the side in one of the interactions. 

According to the aforementioned website, Pandya reiterated trust in the squad and asserted that these are the ‘best 15 people you have in the country and that is why they are there in the squad.’

“So Jasprit not being there obviously makes a big difference. Even if he is not there, (and as) he is coming back after an injury, it is important for him to get enough time to kind of come back. Maybe (he should) not put pressure on himself in whichever game he comes back and plays,” the Gujarat Titans (GT) skipper further opened up on the issue. 

The Rohit Sharma-led side will be edging to stage a comeback as their form has come under scanner post the early exit from the Asia Cup as well. Bumrah’s return has been highly-anticipated as the current set of bowlers have struggled in the death during the recent past. 

The final couple of T20Is of this series will be played in Nagpur and Hyderabad on Friday and Sunday respectively.

“I don’t think we bowled well. 200 is a good score to defend, and we didn’t take our chances in the field. It was a great effort from our batters, but bowlers were not quite there. We took wickets to an extent, but they played really well,” skipper Rohit said in the post-match presentation ceremony, as reported by Cricbuzz.

“We need to look at our bowling before the next game,” he further conceded whilst admitting that India needed to pick that additional wicket that could have changed the course of the game.

India will next face Australia for the second T20I of the series in Nagpur on Friday. Death-bowling has become a major cause of concern in recent months, especially in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah. Whether the team continues to persist with its strategy or opts for a change in the XI in order to shake things up remains to be seen.

Babar and Pakistan will have the opportunity to find form against a new-look England side decimated by injuries. The tourists themselves have had a tough year in T20Is, with poor performances in the powerplay with bat and ball meaning they have a lot of catching up to do.   • Khushdil Shah had a memorable PSL 2022 campaign, where many of the games were played on this ground. Also, he took the fifth-most wickets in this year’s PSL (16) at an economy of 6.89 and strike rate of 12.1.
  • No bowler has more wickets in T20s at Karachi than Shadab Khan. The legspinner has taken 32 wickets in just 21 matches at an average of 18.09 and strike rate of 14.91.
  • Mohammad Nawaz was one of Pakistan’s top performers in the recent Asia Cup. Expect him to have a say in the powerplay and middle overs as England are expected to have at least four right-handers in their top six.

  • Welcome back, Alex Hales. England are in need of a powerplay boost, and Hales has been magnificent at that stage in T20s this year, with 876 runs at a strike rate of 171.1.
  • In 14 innings at the National Stadium, Hales has smashed 411 runs at an average of 31.62 and strike rate of 141.24.
  • Phil Salt has struck 553 runs at a strike rate of 156.2 between overs 1-6 this year. The keeper-batsman will be looking to make amends after a poor PSL 2022 campaign where he scored just 63 runs in eight innings at an average of 9.00.
  • Watch out for the impressive Harry Brook. He smashed a century in PSL 2022, part of 874 runs in 35 short-form matches this year at an average of 33.62 and strike rate of 156.07.
  • Moeen Ali will be key as a spin hitter in the middle overs. Between overs 7-16 this year, Moeen has scored 615 runs at an average of 27.95 strike rate of 148.55. Also, there are a few left-handers to target with his off-spin.

The SA20 player auction resulted in massive paydays for young South African players with Tristan Stubbs bagging the highest bid of Rand 9.2 million from the Sunrisers Eastern Cape. 

24-year-old Titans all-rounder Donavon Ferreira was roped in by the Johannesburg Super Kings (JSK) for Rand 5.5 million. Marco Jansen joined the Sunrisers for Rand 6.1 million whereas his brother Duan was acquired by the MI Cape Town for Rand 3.3 million. Duan was a part of Mumbai Indians’ developmental squad that had toured the United Kingdom (UK) recently. 

The Pretoria Capitals shelled out Rand 6.9 million and Rand 5.6 million for Rilee Rossouw and Wayne Parnell respectively. 

The Paarl Royals had swung into action early on in the auction as they signed up the likes of Lungi Ngidi, Tabraiz Shamsi and Bjorn Fortiun to bolster their bowling attack. Irish all-rounder George Linde along with pacer Beuran Hendricks went to the MI Cape Town, a team that has already made heads turn with their significant acquisitions during the draft. 

On the other hand, the Super Kings had to chart a completely different course of action to rack up their squad with multiple fast-bowling alternatives to suit the prevalent conditions in Wanderers. Alzarri Joseph, Lizaad Williams, George Carton, Lewis Gregory along with Romario Shepherd and Gerald Cortzee make up the team’s pace-bowling battery.

SA20 Auction: “I’m still shaking” – Tristan Stubbs

“Yeah, I mean it’s crazy and I’m still shaking. It’s crazy! I played most of my cricket in St George’s [Park, which will be the home of Sunrisers Eastern Cape] and I really enjoy playing cricket there. Like Neil [McKenzie] said after the SA A tour [I’ve been travelling everywhere],” Stubbs, who caused a major bidding war amongst the Sunrisers, MI and the Super Kings, was quoted in a report by ESPNcricinfo. 

“I really enjoyed the Hundred and played seven consecutive games. I do feel I have more experience and I have played more cricket in different situations. The Hundred comp helped my bowling more and look to keep evolving. I’m open to whatever the team needs [from me],” the 22-year-old reflected upon his recent experiences of turning up in the Hundred. 

Amongst the big names, South African skippers like Dean Elgar and Temba Bavuma found no takers whereas Eoin Morgan went to the Royals after being unsold initially. The Capitals and MI snapped up all-rounders James Neesham and Odean Smith respectively.

For the first time since the memorable Gabba Test, old foes India and Australia will do battle. This time, context points towards crucial preparation for the upcoming T20 World Cup, with both sides looking to iron out some of their most pressing questions ahead of the showpiece tournament.

For India, Virat Kohli’s drought-breaking 71st century was welcome news after another disappointing performance by India in a multi-team tournament. The recent Asia Cup was an opportunity for the Indians to build momentum, but stumbles at key stages, especially in the death overs whilst defending, left Rohit Sharma’s team with plenty to answer ahead of the World Cup. This series serves as key game time to settle on a batting lineup; one that is set up to win all three stages of the innings, as well as a settled bowling combination.

Defending T20 World Cup champions Australia aren’t without their questions, too. The form – or lackthereof – of skipper Aaron Finch prompted him to hang up the boots in ODIs, so whether a different format can be the catalyst of a resurgence in form remains to be seen. Also, David Warner (rested) and Mitchell Marsh (injury) are big shoes to fill, with eyes on how Steve Smith delivers in the number three role in the series. Indeed, if the top order can set a platform, we could be in for fireworks with the Glenn Maxwell-Tim David combination.

Ravindra Jadeja is out for an extended period after knee surgery, so Axar Patel is set to take on the role of the left-arm spin all-rounder. Both Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel return. One key question for India is the wicket-keeper position. Rishabh Pant’s role in the batting lineup is still up in the air in this format, while Dinesh Karthik is a specialist finisher. However, playing Karthik would mean six right-handers in the top six.

  • How Kohli approaches spin will be interesting to see. In all T20s against Adam Zampa, Virat has hit 98 runs in 72 balls with two dismissals.
  • Suryakumar Yadav has the highest strike rate (182.31) of any India player this year (min. 3 inns). He has batted 17 times in T20Is in 2022 for 567 runs at an average of 37.80.
  • Hardik Pandya had an under-par Asia Cup after a great start against Pakistan. However, he is still having an excellent year in T20s (818 runs, avg. 37.18, SR 135.43, plus 20 wickets). Expect him to be used as a wicket-taking option in the middle overs with Patel and Bumrah back on deck.
  • Axar Patel could be crucial against Glenn Maxwell and Tim David. David has been dismissed four times by slow left-arm orthodox for just 51 runs (SR 115.9) in T20s this year. Maxwell fares worse, dismissed six times for 52 runs at a strike rate of 115.55.
  • Jasprit Bumrah has the most wickets in IND-AUS T20Is (15) at an average of 20.13 and strike rate of 16.2. Also, the pacer has taken six wickets in four T20s at Mohali (econ. 7.15, SR 15.67).
  • Bumrah has a great record against Maxwell in T20s. The pacer has dismissed the big hitter seven times in 65 balls, conceding just 75 in the process.
