The Australian women’s team clinched the gold medal after defeating India by nine runs in the Final of the Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Birmingham on Sunday.

However, Meg Lanning’s women stirred up controversy by confirming midway through the innings that their all-rounder Tahlia McGrath had tested positive for Covid-19 on the morning of the summit clash.

The toss was delayed by 12 minutes as McGrath secured the go-ahead of the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Commonwealth Games Foundation (CGF) to feature in the finale.

She was isolated from her teammates during the batting innings was required to wear a mask during the game.

It is important to note that the 26-year-old would have hypothetically been unable to play if the match was held in Australia given the Covid-19 norms and precautions. However, the regulations are relatively more relaxed in the CWG to match the English laws.

“We were all happy to play, she was happy to play. She feels absolutely fine so I think the positive result was a bit of a shock to her, but that’s Covid isn’t it – we’re all going to live through it,” pacer Meghan Schutt was quoted in a report by the Guardian.

McGrath had ensured that she didn’t get involved in team huddles during the course of the game. But she jumped in amongst her teammates after Australia dismissed the final Indian batter in Yastika Bhatia. McGrath was completely masked when she stepped on the podium to receive her medal eventually.

Schutt added, “We didn’t want to get in trouble, we felt bad for Tahlia at the end there. Obviously when you’re part of a game that’s so thrilling like that, that’s all you want to do [is celebrate] and at the end screw it, if we get Covid, so be it.”

The Aussie women’s thorough support for their teammate didn’t really find resonance on social media though. Here are some reactions on Twitter to this incident. Several users drew parallels with the Australian authorities deporting Novak Djokovic for the Serb’s refusal to take the Covid-19 vaccine ahead of the Australian Open earlier this year.

Even Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur didn’t sound overtly supportive of the nod granted to McGrath in this case. However, she rued the side’s inability to do something about the situation. “Before the toss we got to know … that was something which was not in our control and whatever the decision the Commonwealth had, we had to follow it,” Kaur was quoted by the aforementioned publication.

Eventually, McGrath didn’t really contribute significantly to her team’s victory. She scored two runs off four deliveries before being dismissed by Deepti Sharma in the 12th over.

With the ball, McGrath conceded 24 runs in her two overs. However, her inclusion in the XI certainly served up a burning debate amidst cricket’s re-introduction to the CWG.   • Nicholas Pooran has struggled against pace off the ball. Earlier this year, Pooran scored three fifties in as many matches in India, and the Windies will be hoping he rediscovers that form.
  • Kyle Mayers struck 12 boundaries in 50 balls in the third T20I (73 off 50 balls). He took his tally from 69 in five T20Is against India to 143 in six (avg. 23.66, SR 130.27).
  • Rovman Powell scored a 34-ball 54 in his last match on this ground against India, back in 2019. Overall, Powell has scored 231 runs in ten innings vs India at an average of 28.87 and strike rate of 140.85.
  • Obed McCoy remains a threat after his six-wicket haul in the second T20I. Overall this year, he has taken 32 wickets in 15 T20s.

Australia will tour India for a three-match T20I series in September prior to the World T20 Down Under in October. The three T20Is will be held on 20th, 23rd and 25th September in Mohali, Nagpur, and Hyderabad respectively.

Following that, Aaron Finch’s men will engage in a couple of T20I series each against West Indies and England at home in the first half of October.

The games against the men from the Caribbean will be played on 5th and 7th October at Gold Coast and Brisbane respectively. Australia’s series against England will begin from 9th October at Perth. The final couple of games of the series will be on 12th and 14th October in Canberra.

Accordingly, the Aussies will be engaging in at least eight T20Is against absolute top-quality opponents in the month prior to the T20 World Cup. These fixtures will hold them in good stead in their pursuit of becoming the first international team to win consecutive World T20 titles. Finch’s side had emerged victorious in the previous edition of the tournament last year in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Furthermore, the Australian selectors headed by former skipper George Bailey are likely to hand an opportunity to T20 power-hitter Tim David in the coming contests. David put up a fine show of his calibre in the 2022 campaign of the Indian Premier League (IPL) as he scored 186 runs at a strike rate of 216.27 for the Mumbai Indians.

The 26-year-old has found the backing of Ricky Ponting who described David as an ‘out and out match-winner’ who could win the World Cup for Australia.

“If I was a selector, I’d love to have someone like that in my team. He’s an out and out match-winner. He’s the sort of player that could actually win you a World Cup, he’s not just the average run of the mill guy that might just sneak into a squad,” Ponting was quoted in a report by Cricket Australia.

Hasan Ali has been dropped from the Pakistan squad for the upcoming One Day International (ODI) series against Netherlands as well as for the Asia Cup this month.

The 28-year-old has not been in the most encouraging run of form in recent times. He has taken two wickets in three ODIs at a bowling average and strike rate of 76.50 and 70 respectively in 2022. He has played only a single T20I this year but was in comparatively better touch in the format last year. In 18 T20Is, Hasan took 25 scalps at an impressive bowling strike rate of 14.32 in 2021.

However, the selectors probably took a better account of his current form through his performances in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) earlier in 2022. He had taken nine wickets in nine games at a bowling average of 40.55 for Islamabad United.

His economy rate stood at 10.84 for the season and that has reflected in his rather lacklustre outings in international cricket this year as well.

“We have done our homework, especially for the players who have served Pakistan well and have won so many games for the country. To give them a longer run is a part of the plan, but then there is the stage when you realise that now is the time, we think he needs a break for his own and the team’s betterment,” men’s chief selector Mohammed Wasim was quoted in a report by ESPNCricinfo.

He added, “So we had a similar thought process with Hasan Ali, to give him an extended run, but now we think he needs to regather himself and return as a match-winner. We hope going forward we will find the same old Hasan Ali.”

19-year-old Naseem Shah has been drafted into the squad as a replacement for Hasan Ali. The teenage pace sensation has featured fairly regularly in the Test squad in recent times. He averages 36.30 with the ball along with two four-wicket hauls and a solitary five-wicket haul in 13 Test matches so far. However, Shah’s experience in limited-overs cricket is quite limited as of now.

In fact, he has played merely four List A games. In 45 T20s, Naseem has garnered 44 dismissals at an economy rate of 8.17 and a bowling strike rate of 21.9. The selectors are banking on the additional pace that he generates in the hope of that translating into a wicket-taking option in white-ball cricket.

“Naseem Shah is a quality bowler, and we have seen him in domestic white-ball cricket. He has got express pace and we wanted to include an attacking option; it is important to take wickets in white0ball cricket. He has that ability. He can swing the ball, he has got pace, and if we talk about his temperament, we have seen the evidence in Tests,” Wasim further spoke, as per the aforementioned publication.

The selected players will assemble in Lahore for a six-day training cap prior to leaving for the Netherlands on 12th August. Suryakumar Yadav has shot up to the second spot in the ICC Men’s T20I Rankings following his 76-run knock in India’s third T20I vs West Indies. The Mumbai Indians (MI) batsman is merely two points behind (816) top-ranked Babar Azam’s current rating point of 818. With his form, there is a significant chance of the 31-year-old pipping the Pakistani skipper to the first spot after the remaining two games of the ongoing five-match series.

Suryakumar Yadav up to 2nd in the T20I rankings thanks to consistent form

Yadav debuted for India in February 2021 and has been a mainstay in the setup since then. He has already recorded five half-centuries and a century with an average of 38.12 and strike rate of 175.61 in 20 innings so far. The batsman has been promoted to the top of the order in the ongoing series and has made a formidable case in the absence of KL Rahul.

The batsman’s first major jump in the ICC rankings came after his blistering 117-run innings in the final T20I of India’s series against England last month. He moved from the 49th spot to the fifth-place post that match.

Now, the batsman has jumped past Mohammed Rizwan and Aiden Markram, who occupy the third and fourth spot in the standings currently. Dawid Malan has been placed fifth whereas Aaron Finch, Devon Conway, Pathum Nissanka, Nicholas Pooran and Martin Guptill make up for the next five rankings in the top 10. As of now, Babar is the only batsman placed amongst the top three spots in all three formats of international cricket.

Meanwhile, Josh Hazlewood, Tabraiz Shamsi and Rashid Khan hold the first three spots in the ICC Men’s T20I Bowling Rankings. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, placed seventh, is the only Indian in the top 10 rankings. Akeal Hosein’s fairly impressive performances have taken him three places up to the sixth spot. England has always been able to count on the undoubted quality that Ben Stokes possesses, both with the bat and ball. But, since his appointment as Test team captain in April, it’s become clear that as a leader, he has perhaps even more to offer to the national team’s cause.

After England’s disastrous 4-0 loss in the Ashes and their limp defeat in the West Indies, the summer visits of New Zealand, India, and South Africa will have seemed like something to fear.

Ben Stokes recently took a big decision to quit one-day international duties, and given the crowded nature of the cricketing calendar, it’s probably a wise move that the 31-year-old has taken.

That decision came with something of a warning from the skipper, who has rightly pointed out that players are not capable of meeting the demands of modern-day multi-format cricket as it currently stands.

“I will play my last game for England in ODI cricket on Tuesday in Durham. I have decided to retire from this format.”

“This has been an incredibly tough decision to make. I have loved every minute of playing with my mates for England. We have had an incredible journey on the way,”

“Three formats are just unsustainable for me now,”

“Not only do I feel that my body is letting me down because of the schedule and what is expected of us, but I also feel that I am taking the place of another player who can give Jos (Buttler) and the rest of the team their all,” Stokes added.

Fresher Ben Stokes to lead England against South Africa

ODI’s loss should hopefully be Test cricket’s gain. The 50-over format of the game is seemingly the weak link in the chain right now, and Stokes has made the brave decision to move away from the one-day game. That should hold him in good stead for both the long-form and the highly popular T20 format.

Having helped England to a glorious run of four successive wins over New Zealand and India, Ben Stokes will now switch his focus to South Africa, and he knows that his team will have a tough time of it against the Proteas.

South Africa is also on a decent run of form, having eased past Bangladesh in two-match Test series in April. This followed a drawn series against New Zealand, which came after successive triumphs over West Indies and India.

The first Test starts on August 17th at Lords and will be followed by games at Old Trafford and The Oval. There will be a great deal of expectation weighing on the shoulders of the captain, but as history has proven before, Ben Stokes is more than capable of delivering the goods when England is in most need of him.
