Just days after Hobart was awarded the fifth and final Ashes Test, Australia’s southernmost capital city will be treated to another potentially great event.

Not only do Hobart Hurricanes and Perth Scorchers – two sides who have a great chance of reaching the playoffs – meet in this intruiging battle, quality players are returning from Australia A duty and quarantine. The Hurricanes welcome Scott Boland and Englishman Harry Brook while the Scorchers have World Cup hero Mitch Marsh, Josh Inglis and Tymal Mills on deck for this one.

How will the battle of the openers go – particularly Colin Munro vs Matthew Wade? Both dominated in their recent outings, with Munro bringing up a century against the Strikers while Wade blew champions Sydney Sixers away. Also, both teams have good bowling units, so this promises to be an absolute cracker in Hobart.

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Hobart Hurricanes:

  • Matthew Wade was in irresistible form against the Sixers, belting 93 off 46 balls to set up the Hurricanes’ huge score of 213/2. Wade has a modest record vs Scorchers (143 runs, avg. 23.83, SR 141.58). He does have a score of 71 against them and can fire at any moment.
  • Wade has similar numbers at Bellerive Oval in T20s: 17 inns, 401 runs, avg. 26.73, SR 147.97. Can he improve on these numbers?
  • D’Arcy Short has taken a while to get going this season, but he found some fluency in his 73* off 51 balls last game vs Sixers. Short has the most runs in Hurricanes-Scorchers matches with 294 at an average of 49.00 and strike rate of 124.05. This includes a century.
  • Short has the second-most runs of any player in T20s at Bellerive Oval. He has struck 860 runs on this ground at an average of 37.39 and strike rate of 142.86.
  • Caleb Jewell has been in excellent form. He recently struck a century in Sheffield Shield and has made scores of 20 (11) and 42 (23) so far in BBL 11.
  • Tim David struck scores of 31* (23) and 27 (19) vs Scorchers last season. Also, David has a strong record on this ground with 122 runs in three innings at an average of 40.67 and strike rate of 154.43.

  • Welcome back, Mitch Marsh. The right-hander has had a dream year in T20s, making the number three position his own and leading Australia to a World Cup triumph. He has scored 203 runs in seven innings vs Hurricanes at an average of 29.00 and strike rate of 129.30.
  • Josh Inglis is also back for the Scorchers. The hard-hitting keeper-batsman has 141 runs in four innings vs Hurricanes at an average of 47.00 and strike rate of 156.67.
  • Ashton Agar has taken eight wickets in six matches vs Hurricanes at an average of 18.00 and economy rate of 6.26.
  • Jason Behrendhorff was too good for the Strikers a few nights ago, taking 3/22. He will be crucial for the Scorchers against the Hurricanes’ opening pair. He has taken seven wickets in eight matches vs Hurricanes at an average of 29.14 and economy rate of 7.29.
  • Tymal Mills promises to be a wonderful addition to the Scorchers squad. He has taken 32 wickets in 23 short-form matches this year at an economy rate if just 6.68. He will be key at the death with his variations, which increases his wicket-taking potential.

In fantastic news for all associated with Pakistan, international cricket returns to the country after a period of disappointment and heartbreak. New Zealand pulled out of their tour at the last minute, with England following suit soon after, raising doubts as to when cricket would be played again in Pakistan.

Soon after the World Cup, Babar Azam’s team will take the field in Karachi as they continue their preparations for next year’s showpiece tournament in Australia. Pakistan were so close to reaching the recent T20 World Cup Final, and then swept aside Bangladesh 3-0 in challenging conditions. As they build a solid team, they will be looking to continue the momentum against a West Indies side that will have to produce something special to challenge the home side.

The tourists are further depleted with COVID-19 infiltrating their squad. Roston Chase, Sheldon Cottrell and Kyle Mayers are all unavailable as a result, putting significant onus on the likes of Shai Hope, Darren Bravo and Nicholas Pooran to lead the way from a batting perspective. Also, there is a big question mark as to whether the Windies attack – which is set to include members who performed well in CPL 2021 – can make inroads into Pakistan’s in form top order.

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Pakistan:

  • Babar Azam loves playing against West Indies. He has the most runs in PAK-WI T20Is, with 454 at an average of 56.75 and strike rate of 125.41.
  • Also, Babar has a remarkable record in T20s at Karachi. In 26 matches, Babar has struck 1,178 runs at an average of 69.29 and strike rate of 135.56. No player has more runs than Azam on this ground.
  • Mohammad Rizwan also enjoys batting at Karachi. In 10 innings on this ground, Rizwan has hit 390 runs at an average of 48.75 and strike rate of 134.48. Also, Rizwan is having a year to remember, with 1,833 runs in 45 short-form matches at an average of 55.55 and strike rate of 129.54.
  • Fakhar Zaman is in some great form. The left-hander has struck 55*, 34 and 57* in his last three T20Is. He has a solid T20 record at Karachi, with 563 runs in 16 innings at an average of 37.53 and strike rate of 140.75.
  • Shadab Khan has the most wickets in PAK-WI T20s. The leg-spinner has 15 wickets in nine matches against them at an average of 11.20 and economy rate of 5.28. Also, Shadab has taken nine wickets in his last four T20Is, including 4/26 in the T20 World Cup Semi Final against Australia.
  • Another first over wicket for Shaheen Shah Afridi coming up? The left-arm fast bowler has taken 15 wickets in 11 innings on this ground and is having a great year: 35 matches, 47 wickets, econ. 7.84.

West Indies:

  • Nicholas Pooran has the most runs against Pakistan out of any current WI squad member. The skipper has scored 100 runs against Pakistan at an average of 25 and strike rate of 151.52. This includes a score of 62* off 33 balls earlier this year.
  • West Indies need Shai Hope to hold the innings together. He had a poor CPL 2021 campaign (141 runs, avg. 17.62), so the Windies will be hoping for a turnaround.
  • Romario Shepherd is one to watch. And arguably a player the Windies should have picked in their T20 World Cup squad. He took 18 wickets in nine matches in CPL 2021, in addition to 109 runs at a strike rate of 165.15.
  • Odean Smith also took 18 wickets in CPL 2021 (11 matches, avg. 14.88, SR 11.8). He bowled with good pace, and his variations could come in handy today.
  • Akeal Hosein is fast improving as a T20 bowler. He was one of the bright spots in a disappointing World Cup campaign for the Windies, taking five wickets at an economy rate of 7.00.

Two teams in need of a win go head-to-head in this important clash as Brisbane Heat (last) and Melbourne Renegades (second-last) occupy the bottom two places on the BBL 11 ladder. While it is still early in the season, both sides will be aiming to ensure they don’t fall too behind from the other teams.

In a boost for the Renegades, skipper Nic Maddinson is back in their squad after leading Australia A to victory over the England Lions. Maddinson is enjoying a great season so far, and will add some much needed form and quality to the Renegades lineup that were bundled out for just 100 in their last game against the Strikers.

The Heat, who were excellent at the backend of last season, are yet to register a single point in BBL 11. They have had their chances in the opening two games, only to squander the advantage due to poor periods of play – particularly at the top of the order. If they lose again today, it won’t be curtains in a long season, but they need to get going and their first home game represents a good opportunity to do so.

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Brisbane Heat:

  • Chris Lynn has the most runs of any Heat player against the Renegades. He has scored 349 runs against them in 13 innings at an average of 31.73 and strike rate of 143.03, including two half-centuries last season.
  • Lynn has similar numbers at Carrara Oval. The right-hander has struck 251 runs in seven innings at an average of 35.86 and strike rate of 126.13.
  • Ben Duckett missed out in the last game after making 46 off 35 balls in his first match. He is striking at 146.78 in 23 short-form matches this year (662, avg. 31.52).
  • Sam Heazlett has been in some good touch with scores of 42 (37) and 34 (17) so far this season. He has a half-century vs Renegades, but just 48 runs in his remaining four matches against them.
  • Xavier Bartlett has arguably been player of the tournament so far for the Heat. He has taken 1/20 and 1/34 with the ball, and he has been strong with the bat (26* off 18 balls and 34* off 25 balls).
  • Mujeeb ur Rahman will be key against a Renegades lineup that has a couple of left-handers in their top order. He is conceding just six runs an over so far in BBL 11 and has taken 35 wickets in 27 matches this year at an economy rate of just 6.68.

Melbourne Renegades:

  • Nic Maddinson is in terrific touch. He smashed 71 off 46 balls in the second innings for Australia A against England Lions after some big scores in Sheffield Shield cricket.
  • Maddinson will be aiming to improve on his poor record vs Heat: 11 inns, 158 runs, avg. 15.80, SR 117.04.
  • Sam Harper has made two starts this season (33 off 28 balls and 33 off 31 balls). Can he find greater fluency today? He has scored 155 runs in five matches vs Heat at an average of 38.75 and strike rate of 135.96.
  • Jake Fraser-McGurk scored a 33-ball 40 vs Heat last season. If he gets a chance today, watch out.
  • Mohammad Nabi has been dismissed just once in three innings vs Heat (69 runs, SR 135.69). He just has the one wicket against them at an average of 103. Can he improve on this today against some of Heat’s left-handers?
  • Kane Richardson comes into this match in good form. He took 1/24 and 4/32 vs Strikers. Also, he has 10 wickets in eight career matches vs Heat at an economy rate of 7.60, plus two wickets in as many matches on this ground.
  • Zahir Khan has taken five wickets in two matches so far in BBL 11 (3/24 and 2/34). The left-arm wrist-spinner has looked in fine touch, and will be a factor in the middle overs especially.

After a long wait spanning 326 days and 210 deliveries, Australia’s off-spinner Nathan Lyon finally became the 17th man in Test cricket history to take 400 wickets. Lyon wheeled away for over 25 overs in the second innings of the Gabba Test, dismissing Dawid Malan to break the huge 162-run partnership between he and Joe Root.

Placing a silly point paid off for Australia. Yesterday, there were often times where such a fielder wasn’t in place, which gave Malan a sense of comfort. Lyon continued to wheel away on the fourth morning, hitting the right lengths with a bit of bounce to get Marnus Labuschagne – who took the catch – in the game.

Nicknamed the GOAT, Lyon has become the third Australian to reach the landmark after greats Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath. The off-spinner’s value goes beyond just the wickets he takes, but rather how he is able to hold up an end to enable the pacers to go hard at the other end. This is exemplified further in Jack Leach’s struggles in Australia’s first innings, where he went for 7.84 an over after England were rolled for 147.

In a matter of a few days, Hobart Hurricanes and Sydney Sixers will do battle once again.

And the Hurricanes will be looking to right the wrongs of a big missed opportunity a few days ago. They restricted the champions to 39/5 before letting the advantage slip, and then an awfully slow start with the bat meant they were always playing catch up. These are two key areas to work on today at the SCG, as they aim to improve on a poor season last year.

However, what the game showed is the Sydney Sixers’ superb depth. Moises Henriques has been absolutely outstanding, and the bowling attack has so many options to turn to in times of need. They will be aiming for more of the same today by limiting the Hurricanes top order, thus putting that middle order under pressure. Also, they will be out for more runs at the top themselves.

  • What a start to the new season for Moises Henriques. The skipper has smashed scores of 76* (38) and 73 (48) in the first two games. His knock of 73 against the Hurricanes got the Sixers out of a very difficult position.
  • Josh Philippe smashed 83 (49) at the SCG last week vs Stars. He has 473 runs on this ground at an average of 33.79 and strike rate of 142.04.
  • Philippe will be aiming to improve his record against the Hurricanes. He has made a score of 86 against them at the SCG, but his remaining six innings have yielded just 60 runs, including an 11-ball 5 a few days ago.
  • James Vince also missed out a few days ago in Launceston (13 off 12 balls). Overall vs Hurricanes, Vince has struck 178 runs at an average of 35.60 and strike rate of 136.92.
  • Vince loves batting at the SCG. The right-hander has smashed 526 runs in 15 matches on this ground at an average of 43.83 and strike rate of 144.11.
  • Dan Christian has made a slow start to BBL 11, but he can fire at any moment. The all-rounder has a total of 256 runs in 13 matches vs Hurricanes at an average of 28.44 and strike rate of 152.38. He also has 10 wickets.

  • Also, Wade has a great record in T20s at the SCG. The left-hander has struck 274 runs in seven innings at an average of 45.67 and strike rate of 151.38.

Nearly a week after suffering the heaviest defeat in BBL history, Melbourne Stars will play their first home game with an almost completely new look team in what could be a cracking encounter against the capable Sydney Thunder.

After fielding a team missing key players like Marcus Stoinis and Nathan Coulter-Nile, the Stars were taken apart by the Sydney Sixers batsmen before rolling over for just 61. Here, both Stoinis and Coulter-Nile are in the squad, along with West Indian T20 great Andre Russell who signed with the franchise this week. Also, Qais Ahmed is set to play after arriving from the Abu Dhabi T10 League, so we can expect to see a much different Stars performance today.

The Thunder have their own qualities, which is why they are rated highly by many fans and pundits. They started their campaign off well against the Heat on Monday night, and a victory here away from home will only increase confidence further. The form of Alex Ross and Sam Billings in the middle order is encouraging, while the bowling attack looks quite handy when Gurinder Sandhu is rediscovering his form from nearly a decade ago.

In a tournament that is crying out for quality so far, this might just be the game that delivers it.

In the matter of a few days, Melbourne Renegades and Adelaide Strikers will do battle once again. The first meeting between the two sides, which was important given their respective predicaments, went the way of the Renegades by just the two runs as James Pattinson held his nerve in the final over.

The Renegades bowled well to defend 153/9, but it is clear that both teams are flawed. It was a close battle but one also filled with errors and poor judgement, so the onus is on the players to show improvement as the action moves to Adelaide.

The Strikers look to lack firepower in the absence of Alex Carey and Travis Head, so a lot rests on the likes of Jake Weatherald, Matt Short and even Rashid Khan to strike some lusty blows. Similar questions are asked of the Renegades, who will be without Aaron Finch once again due to a knee injury. Keep an eye out for Sam Harper, Mackenzie Harvey and Jake Fraser-McGurk, who took one of the great catches on Tuesday night.

Adelaide Strikers:

  • Matt Short looked in impressive touch a couple of nights ago vs Renegades. He took a wicket and provided a blistering start (29 off 18 balls). He will be key once again in a Strikers side that is lacking some depth.
  • Can Jake Weatherald impact this game? He was victim of a brilliant catch by Fraser-McGurk last match as he was starting to look good. He has the most runs in Strikers-Renegades matches with 295 runs in 10 matches at an average of 29.50 and strike rate 140.48.
  • Weatherald is the only player with at least 1,000 T20 runs at Adelaide Oval. The left-hander has struck 1,033 runs on this ground at an average of 33.32 and strike rate of 138.66.
  • Jono Wells averages 35.43 and strikes at 135.03 in 28 T20 innings at the Adelaide Oval. He was out cheaply to Zahir Khan two nights ago (8 off 9 balls), but still has a decent record vs Renegades: 9 inns, 178 runs, avg. 29.67, SR 119.46.
  • Rashid Khan (1/30) was unlucky not to take more wickets due to a missed stumping. He has a superb record vs Renegades, with 14 wickets in nine matches at an average of 13.86 and economy rate of 5.39.
  • Also, Rashid has the third-most wickets of any bowler in T20s at Adelaide. He has taken 37 wickets in 25 matches at an average of 17.54 and economy rate of 6.62.
  • Peter Siddle continues to impress in T20 cricket. He was expensive the other night, but he took three wickets to showcase his wicket-taking ability. He has 10 scalps in seven matches vs Renegades.
  • Also, Siddle has a great record at Adelaide: 25 matches, 38 wickets, avg. 15.42, econ. 7.02.
  • George Garton will be key at the death with both bat and ball. His two wickets the other night came in the final overs and he could bat higher up the order with key Strikers batsmen unavailable.

Melbourne Renegades:

  • Mackenzie Harvey is coming off a strong half-century vs Strikers two days ago. His 46-ball 56 helped set up the innings. Can he do more of the same today?
  • Sam Harper struggled early the other night, before scratching his way to a 28-ball 33.. But, given he looks to target square boundaries, he could cash in today given Adelaide’s smaller side boundaries.
  • Mohammad Nabi has enjoyed success at the Adelaide Oval, with 132 runs at an average of 66.00 and strike rate of 134.69. He averages 36.50 in six innings vs Strikers.
  • Zahir Khan was player of the match two nights ago vs Strikers thanks to a brilliant spell of 3/24. Can he produce a similar performance here on an Adelaide pitch that could provide some turn?
  • Kane Richardson (1/24 vs Strikers) made a good start to captaincy. He has taken the sixth-most T20 wickets at Adelaide Oval with 29 scalps in 26 matches at an average of 26.72 and strike rate of 8.19.

At the end of that press statement was a little note, which did not come as a surprise to some, but was a massive development. The BCCI did what they do best, as they announced it with no professionalism and very little regard for the fans. 

“The All-India Senior Selection Committee also decided to name Mr Rohit Sharma as the Captain of the ODI & T20I teams going forward.” 

This means Rohit Sharma will take over the captaincy against South Africa in a three-match series which begins after the Test series. There has been so much speculation and even accusations thrown around on social media and in the media channels in general about this whole situation.

But you can expect there to be no rift in the actual team as everyone present are thorough professionals and will always act in the best interest of the team. The Indian team at the moment is currently made up of players who have been in the setup for quite a while now. 

But once the smoke clears, an ardent cricket fan will see the positives of this announcement. This now means that Virat Kohli, the ODI player of the decade from 2010-2020, can just go out there and bat. He can bat and start scoring hundreds again; he can bat and start breaking more records without worrying about captaining.

The next immediate record would be to score his 71st hundred and equal Ricky Ponting to stand second on the list of most international tons. Fans would expect this to happen in the ODI series itself, but with no added pressure of the white-ball captaincy, his red-ball game might be elevated to a whole new level as well.

There are not many faults you can find in Virat Kohli as a captain, the only big missing piece from his captaincy record is a major trophy which India haven’t been able to get their hands on since their 2013 ICC Champions Trophy victory. 

Under Virat, India played two 50-over global tournaments in which they finished runners-up in the Champions Trophy in 2017 and bowed out in the semi-finals to NZ in the World Cup in 2019. For many countries and captains that record would be something to target, but for Kohli and India, it was not very well received by the BCCI and the fans. 

Nonetheless, over his four years as a full-time 50-over captain, Kohli provided Indian fans with countless memories as a batter and skipper. The 2018 Virat Kohli was on a different level across formats. In the one day format, Virat Kohli scored 1202 runs at an average of 133.55 with six hundreds to his name in 14 innings. 

Now as Virat Kohli will step onto the field as just another player in the team, fans would be yearning for Kohli to wound back the clock and step into 2018 and just keep batting and batting.

The Gabba has not been a happy hunting ground for England over the past two decades, and the trend continued on day one of the 2021/22 Ashes. Former England batsman Kevin Pietersen warned that England must overcome this trend, but they made a horror start, getting bowled out for 147 after winning the toss and choosing to bat first.

Rory Burns had his leg stump uprooted on the first ball of the series by Mitchell Starc, sparking wild celebrations from the Australian players and crowd. It only got worse from there, including a duck for skipper Joe Root as England then crumbled to 29/4.

Despite the fighting efforts by Ollie Pope and Jos Buttler, you always felt a wicket could come. That’s exactly what happened, as England went on to lose their last five wickets for 35 runs to concede the advantage on day one.

Before heavy rain put an end to the day’s play, Pat Cummins made the perfect start to life as Australia captain. The new skipper took his first five-wicket haul against England, which included the big wicket of Ben Stokes. The world’s number one bowler had the ball on a string, finishing with 5/38 to give Australia a huge psychological advantage for the rest of the series.

England fans may have been tempted to go to sleep as wickets tumbled early on day one of the Ashes. Australia bowled and caught beautifully, and will now be looking forward to a big first innings with the bat. Strap yourselves in because this one could be a cracker. The highly-rated champions, Sydney Sixers, travel to Hobart after wiping the floor with the Melbourne Stars. However, they can expect this clash to be a much tougher assignment, with the much improved Hobart Hurricanes looking to improve on a disappointing campaign last season.

The Hurricanes will have some key players missing in this clash, but they still have plenty going for them. Matthew Wade and D’Arcy Short – one of the BBL’s premier opening partnerships – are together at the top. The likes of Tim David can finish the innings strongly in the absence of Ben McDermott and Harry Brook. Also, Riley Meredith (injured) is out, but Nathan Ellis is capable of leading the attack in the crunch overs.

So, a competitive display will hold the Hurricanes in good stead against a strong opponent. The Sixers were irresistible on the tournament’s opening night, with Josh Philippe (83), Moises Henriques (76*) and the bowlers proving their worth yet again. They will be aiming for more of the same in their quest to continue their very strong start to the BBL 11 season.

Hobart Hurricanes:

  • Matthew Wade is set to play the whole BBL season which is a huge plus for the Hurricanes. He has been brilliant in the BBL over the past three seasons, smashing 1,048 runs at a strike rate above 150.
  • Wade has a wonderful record vs the Sixers. He has struck 206 runs against them in four innings at an average of 51.50 and strike rate of 151.47.
  • D’Arcy Short has scored the most runs in Sixers-Hurricanes matches. The left-hander has scored 322 runs at an average of 46.00 and strike rate of 142.48. So, both openers have strong records vs Sixers and will be aiming to make a good start.
  • Caleb Jewell could get an opportunity given Ben McDermott is out injured. He recently struck a century in Sheffield Shield cricket, so he is in some decent form.

  • Jordan Silk has scored the most runs of any Sixers player against the Hurricanes. The right-hander has struck 278 runs in nine innings at an average of 34.75 and strike rate of 126.94.
  • If available, Dan Christian will look to replicate last season’s form. He has a strong overall record vs Hurricanes (251 runs, avg. 31.38, SR 153.85), along with 10 wickets.
