3 Australian players who must step up to win T20 series vs NZ

3 Australian players who must step up to win T20 series vs NZ | 3 Australian players who must step up to come back from 0-2 down

With a T20 World Cup just months away, Australia still look unsure of their best combinations. The batting lineup is full of top order specialists, and the bowling attack is yet to deliver for the full 20 overs in the current series against New Zealand.

As a result, they sit 0-2 down in the five-match series, and the Black Caps are looking an all-round better side than Australia right now. With a limited number of matches scheduled until the T20 World Cup in India, these last three matches in New Zealand look even more crucial. The absence of crowds in Wellington due to a community outbreak of COVID-19 in Auckland could be an advantage for Australia, but for them to gain confidence and bounce back in the current series, three key players must step up to help turn things around.

Aaron Finch

Australian skipper Aaron Finch went through a similar form slump at the turn of 2019. Ahead of the 2019 ODI World Cup, questions were asked about whether Finch even makes the Australian side’s best XI as David Warner was set to return from his 12-month ban.

Fast forward two years later, and Finch finds himself in a similar position. His struggles in BBL 10 have crept into the international circuit, and Finch will have to dig deep to turn things around as he managed to do two years ago. T20 is such a format that one or two big blows can see a spike in confidence, and that is what the Australians will be hoping for in the remainder of this series.

Glenn Maxwell

3 Australian players who must step up to win T20 series vs NZ: Glenn Maxwell

Glenn Maxwell continues to land the big IPL contracts because of the potential he possesses. After a superb limited-overs series against India, Maxwell then had an indifferent BBL campaign followed by two low scores in this series. This has increased the spotlight on the hard-hitting batsman, who went for another mammoth price in the IPL Auction.

Given Australia’s middle order contains a number of top order specialists, the contribution of Maxwell is crucial to Australia’s hopes; not only for the remainder of this series, but also for the T20 World Cup. He will continue to take risks – as he should – but needs to ensure that they are as calculated as possible.

Kane Richardson

3 Australian players who must step up to win T20 series vs NZ | 3 Australian players who must step up to come back from 0-2 down
3 Australian players who must step up to win T20 series vs NZ: Kane Richardson will be key.

If Australia are to achieve glory for the first time at a T20 World Cup, as well as bounce back vs New Zealand, their death bowling needs to improve. The continued rotation of Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc, owing to a busy calendar, means that the next crop of bowlers must deliver.

Kane Richardson has regularly been touted as a death over specialist. However, he hasn’t been at his best in recent times, and is going at 10.62 runs per over this series. In their last three losses, Australia have conceded 54 in the last 4.4 overs vs India, 66 in the last five overs vs New Zealand and then 55 runs in the second game of the five-match series.

With Daniel Sams really struggling at the death in international cricket (whopping 93 runs in 5.4 overs), Richardson needs to lead the way to ensure Australia don’t let the game slip away at this stage.

One feels that if these three players perform, others can follow and Australia look a much better side. If they’re struggling, then they have a lot of catching up to do.

AFG vs ZIM 1st Test Dream11 Prediction Possible Playing 11 Pitch Report | AFG vs ZIM 1st Test Dream11 Prediction | Afghanistan vs Zimbabwe 1st Test Key Players | Abu Dhabi Pitch Report

In a world where the top sides play each other so often that inequality on the Test circuit exists, a new rivalry has the chance to develop in the game’s most traditional format. Both teams are looking to make gains amid limited opportunities, but the stories of Afghanistan and Zimbabwe are quite the contrast over the past 15 years.

After the glory days of the late 1990s and early 2000s, Zimbabwe went into Test exile from 2005 to 2011, with financial and political issues continuing to hamper the country’s cricketing prospects. During that period, Afghanistan won the ICC World Cricket League Division Five in 2008, defeating Jersey in the Final. In contrast to Zimbabwe’s decline, Afghanistan’s rise has been heartening, with two Test victories to their name and a number of T20 stars around the world, 13 years later.

So, in this intriguing Test series, who will hold their nerve better? Can Zimbabwe, who won’t have to deal with Rashid Khan in this Test due to injury, display the patience and grit required to win in the UAE? Or will Afghanistan have too much know-how in these conditions, even without Rashid Khan?

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Afghanistan:

  • Rahmat Shah is undoubtedly Afghanistan’s most solid batsman. He is the only Afghan with a Test century, and comes into this series off the back of an ODI century against Ireland in January.
  • 19-year old Ibrahim Zadran faced 388 balls in his first two Test matches, back in 2019. If he shows that same application here, he has the potential to score big.
  • Asghar Afghan is Afganistan’s Test captain once again. He has scored three half-centuries in four Tests, and is only behind Rahmat for the most Test runs for Afghanistan (249, avg. 35.57).
  • Expect Yamin Ahmadzai to bang away on a good length throughout the series. He has 10 wickets in his four Tests, only behind Rashid Khan for most wickets for Afghanistan.
  • Amir Hamza, who took 5/79 on Test debut vs West Indies, has a superb First Class record. The left-arm orthodox spinner has 80 wickets in 14 FC matches at a superb average of 21.06. Key player.

Zimbabwe:

  • The absence of Brendan Taylor and Craig Ervine puts the onus on Sean Williams to perform. The skipper has the third-most Test runs of any Zimbabwe squad member (770, avg. 33.47). He will want to improve on his numbers in Asia (176 runs, avg. 29.33).
  • Prince Masvaure has the potential to set a platform for Zimbabwe. He has faced 695 balls in his five Tests to date, with two half-centuries.
  • Tarisai Musakanda was in superb form in Zimbabwe’s recent Regional Games in January. He scored 111 and 125 in two matches, as well as 108 in a First Class game in December.
  • Sikandar Raza averages 36.92 with the bat in Asia (7 Tests, 517 runs). Also, he has 32 wickets to his name in his 15-Test career, but will be looking to improve on his bowling average of 58.30 in Asia.
  • Blessing Muzarabani is set to play his first Test since returning to the Zimbabwe team. The tall pacer can extract some bounce off the placid Abu Dhabi surface. He and the spinners, namely Brandon Mavuta, will be key.

Stats and Facts

  • This will be the first ever meeting between the two teams in Tests. Afghanistan and Zimbabwe have played in 25 ODIs, where Afghanistan have won 15. In nine T20Is, Afghanistan have won eight.
  • Both Afghanistan and Zimbabwe have never played a Test at Abu Dhabi.
  • Zimbabwe’s 15-man squad has more than double the First Class matches than Afghanistan’s 19-strong squad. Zimbabwe’s players have featured in 747 first-class matches while Afghanistan have played in just 356.

Possible Playing 11

Sheikh Zayed Stadium Abu Dhabi Pitch Report and Weather

The Abu Dhabi track is usually placid for the first few days, before it takes more turn in the final stages of the match. This ground has played host to matches that have exploded into life in the final couple of days, as the pitch wears more. The average 1st inns (match) score is 364, and the team batting 2nd has won just once in Abu Dhabi (D4, L8).

It is winter in the UAE, but temperatures will hover around 30 degrees with total sunshine. So, expect the pitch to take more spin as the game goes on.

PSL 2021 Match 12: QUE vs ISL Dream11 Prediction Possible Playing 11 Pitch Report | QUE vs ISL Dream11 Prediction Today | Quetta Gladiators vs Islamabad United Key Players | Karachi Pitch Report

Quetta Gladiators will be taking on Islamabad United for the 12th league match of PSL 2021.

After three losses in a row, Gladiators would be looking for their first win for the tournament when they face United. Skipper Sarfraz has led from he is also the highest run-scorer for them but their death bowling has costed them heavily. Hasnain, who has been their best bowler, has just managed to pick 3 wickets in as many matches.

On the other hand, United batting collapsed against Zalmi and got bowled out for 114. In less than 24 hours of time-frame, Wahaz Riaz went from his worst T20 performance to achieving his best figures (17/4). That’s how the game of cricket works; not every day is your day.

In the past, Gladiators have dominated against United and have won 7 times out of 11, so it would be the perfect opportunity for Sarfraz’s men to open their account and build some momentum from here on.

PSL 2021 Match 12: QUE vs ISL Dream11 Prediction: Sarfaraz will be key.

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Lahore Qalanders

  • Faf du Plessis – Faf came in as a replacement for Chris Gayle and looked in sublime touch last game. He scored 37 runs and will be key to Gladiators batting.
  • Mohammad Hasnain – Pacer has played 3 games against United and has never gone Wicketless. He has 7 wickets in 3 matches. The onus will be on him along with Dale Steyn to step up with the ball and perform.
  • Sarfraz Ahmed – Skipper is having an impressive PSL so far and has led his side quite well. He would be hoping for better performance from his bowlers and grab the first of the tourney. He has 198 runs against United in 11 matches at an average of 27 and the best score of 51*.
  • Cameron Delport – In a surprising move, Gladiators dropped Banton and promoted Delport to open the batting. However, Delport did not last long in the first match and if they continue with him again, he will be a very good pick in Grand Leagues.

Islamabad United

  • Alex Hales –  Hales has brought his BBL form to the sub-continent and has been at his brutal best so far. In the last match also when everyone around him did not do much with the bat, the Englishman managed 41 runs off 27 balls. He has played twice against Quetta and has made 29 & 16.
  • Shadab Khan- United Skipper is having a quiet PSL so far and would be eager for a turnaround in the coming days. In the last match, he did not get a wicket but probably bowled his best spell. He has not enjoyed much success against Gladiators in past and has just 2 wickets in 8 games.  Despite all odds, he can fetch good fantasy points with both bat & ball and will be a good pick in Grand Leagues.
  • Faheem Ashraf-  Building up to the PSL, Ashraf was having a dream run with both bat and the ball but he has not much done till now. However, his numbers against Gladiators are impressive. The All-rounder has 10 wickets in 6 games & was also seen batting up the order in the last match which also makes him a good option to have in all leagues.

PSL 2021 Match 10: ISL vs PES Dream11 Prediction Possible Playing 11 Pitch Report | ISL vs PES Dream11 Prediction Today | Islamabad United vs Peshawar Zalmi Key Players | Karachi Pitch Report

Two sides who are looking impressive so far go head-to-head in what promises to be a blockbuster clash on Saturday evening.

PSL 2021 has been dominated by the chasing teams, and these two sides are proof of that. Islamabad United have won two of three games, including a successful chase of 197 last game vs the Kings in a game where a number of batsmen contributed. Peshawar Zalmi have achieved two huge run-chases in a row (194 and 199), so confidence will be sky-high.

So, can the team bowling first compete in a game between two strong chasing sides?

Peshawar Zalmi:

  • Imam-ul-Haq has two consecutive scores in the 40s in PSL 2021 (48 and 41). Zalmi will be hoping that he can build on a modest record vs Islamabad (4 matches, 98 runs, avg. 24.50, SR 144.12).

PSL 2021 Match 9: KAR vs MUL Dream11 Prediction Possible Playing 11 Pitch Report | KAR vs MUL Dream11 Prediction Today | Karachi Kings vs Multan Sultans Key Players | Karachi Pitch Report

Karachi Kings will be taking on Multan Sultan for the 9th league match of PSL 2021.

Skipper Rizwan was in blitz mode against Qalandars and helped his side secure their first win of the tournament. It was also Multan’s first win after five consecutive losses, three of which came in the last season. Multan bowlers were impressive with the ball and restricted Qalandars to 157 which was always going to be a below-par total on Karachi Wicket. Now they would like to build some momentum and get two consecutive wins in as many matches.

Meanwhile, defending Champions suffered a loss in their previous match against United.  Karachi openers Sharjeel (105 off 59 balls) & Babar (62 off54 balls) wreaked havoc on United bowled and piled a total of 196 runs in 20 overs. However, that was not enough in the end and United registered their highest chase in PSL history.

The late Prof Dean ‘Deano’ Jones went against all the odds and backed Sharjeel to come good in the last season and better late than never Sharjeel lived up to the expectations and scored his 2nd century in PSL. Deano would be smiling up from heaven and proud of his Boys!

PSL 2021 Match 9: KAR vs MUL Dream11 Prediction: Big game for Babar.

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Multan Sultans

  • Mohammad Rizwan – Rizwan is topping the run chart with 188 runs in 3 matches. All eyes will be on him how he performs against his previous team Kings, which benched him for the whole season and picked Chadwick Walton. The skipper is in magnificent form.
  • Carlos Braithwaite-  On several occasions, we have found that Consistency and Carlos don’t go well together. But, for a change, the Windies All-Rounder is showing some ominous signs with the ball and can fetch good fantasy points as he is bowling crucial overs.
  • Braithwaite has just played once against Karachi and scored 8 runs and picked up a wicket.
  • James Vince- After missing out against Qalandars Vince would be looking to be back among the runs. He has just played one game against Kings and scored 16 runs.
  • Chris Lynn – has missed out in the last three games now and there will be pressure on him to perform, especially when he is occupying an overseas slot and Shan Masood in on the bench. He will be a good pick in Grand leagues.
  • Shahid Afridi would be looking to bounce back and pick crucial wickets after recording his worst figures in a T20 match. If he plays he will be a good pick in Grand League.

Karachi Kings

  • Babar Azam –  King Babar is a world-class player. He scored 473 runs at an average of 59.12 last season and is a favorite again to top the run charts again. In 7 matches against Sultans, he has scored 225 runs at an average of 45 with the best score of 77.
  • Sharjeel Khan – Karachi Opener would be high on confidence after a swash-buckling century and will take confidence against Sultans and look to improve his numbers. He just has 20 runs in 3 matches against Multan.
  • Mohammad Amir- After Karachi failed to defend a mammoth total of 196 runs in their previous encounter, they need Amir to step up as he is leading the bowling attack. He has 8 Wickets in 4 matches against them.

Key Stats and Facts

  • Karachi has dominated against Multan in past and has won 4 out 7 matches, 2 matches have been No Result.
  • Nothing new in PSL 2021. All matches have been won by chasing teams.

Predicted Playing 11

PSL 2021 Match 8: PES vs QUE Dream11 Prediction Possible Playing 11 Pitch Report | PES vs QUE Dream11 Prediction Today | Peshawar Zalmi vs Quetta Gladiators Key Players | Karachi Pitch Report

The eighth match of PSL 2021 shapes up to be important between two sides outside the top four in the early stages of the season.

It is particularly important for Quetta Gladiators. Currently in last position, the Gladiators have taken a mere four wickets in 32.2 overs so far this season. Their batting has been carried by Chris Gayle, who has now left for national duty for West Indies in their upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. So, the onus will be on skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed to lead the way, with support from the likes of Tom Banton, Saim Ayub and Ben Cutting.

With regards to Peshawar Zalmi, they are coming off a fine chase against Multan Sultans a couple of nights ago. Tom Kohler-Cadmore‘s 32-ball 53 trumped James Vince’s 55-ball 84 as his side chased 195 with a whole over to spare. In this match, they’ll be keen to improve their bowling, with skipper Wahab Riaz (0/53 off four overs) looking to bounce back after a poor outing last game.

PSL 2021 Match 7: LAH vs MUL Dream11 Prediction Possible Playing 11 Pitch Report | LAH vs MUL Dream11 Prediction Today | Lahore Qalandars vs Multan Sultans Key Players | Karachi Pitch Report

Lahore Qalandars will lock horns with Multan Sultan for the 7th league match of PSL 2021.

Qalandars have finally broken the jinx by winning the first two league matches in PSL history. They were mighty inconsistent in the first four seasons of the tournament but the tables have turned now and Qalandars would be looking for their third win on the trot. Rashid Khan has left to join his national side and won’t take a further part in PSL 2021.

In their last league match against Gladiators, Qalandars chased down 179 in just 18.2 overs with 9 wickets in hand, Fakhar Zaman (88 of 52 balls), and Professor Mohammad Hafeez (73 of 33 balls) fired on all cylinders and crushed Sarfraz’s Gladiators in some style.

On the contrary, last year table-toppers have lost their opening two matches of the tournament. Mohd Rizwan & James Vince have been the star with the bat for Sultans but their death bowling has let them down. With Imran Tahir & Sohail Khan in the ranks, Sultans will be looking for an improved performance from their bowlers.

PSL 2021 Match 7: LAH vs MUL Dream11 Prediction: James Vince has been in superb form.

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Lahore Qalandars

  • Mohammad Hafeez –  Professor schooled Sarfaraz Boys in the last match and yet to be dismissed in the tournament. He also made some news yesterday when PCB offered him a Grade’C contract and it was turned down by the Veteran, rightly so after serving Pakistan Cricket for decades, one expects better things at his disposal.
  • Hafeez has 148 runs against Sultans in 5 innings at an average of 37 and the best score of 59.
  • Fakhar Zaman –  Zaman showed good form against Gladiators and he will be up against Rizwan-led Sultan, who has taken his place on the national side. The Left-Hander would be eager to put a show against his counter-part and get on Selectors radar again. Fakhar has 303 runs against Sultans in 7 matches at an average of 43.29 and the best score of 63.
  • Shaheen Afridi –  After an impressive performance in the opening encounter, Afridi did not look at his very best in the second match and was outbowled by Haris Rauf who picked up 3 wickets. The left-arm would be keen to get his mojo back. He has 12 wickets in 7 matches against the Multan Sultans which includes a 5-fer.
  • Samit Patel has played two matches and neither batted nor bowled in the tournament so far. Now with Rashid Khan gone, it will be interesting to see how Qalandars utilize him. Patel has just 66 runs and 3 wickets in 5 matches so his numbers don’t tell a great story but depending on the combination Qalandars play tomorrow, users can pick him only in Grand leagues.
  • For example, If Qalandars goes with 5 bowling options with 5th bowler in Patel, he is worth a shot in Grand Leagues.

Multan Sultans

  • Chris Lynn –  Lynny was part of Qalandars last season and he ran riots on Sultan bowlers in his knock on 113*. Interestingly, now he will be playing for Multan Sultans against his previous side and all eyes will be on him how he performs after missing out in the first two matches.
  • Mohd Rizwan –  Man believes in hard work than form, rightly so his hard work over the year is paying from heaps of dividends. Rizwan is the leading run-scorer of this year PSL with 112 runs so far. Skipper would be hoping for better support from his bowlers and looking for the first win of the tourney.
  • James Vince – Vincey resumes from where he let off in the BBL. With this kind of form, he would be itching to get back on the national side. In 5 matches against Qalandars, he has 137 runs which include the best score of 84.
  • Sohaib Maqsood – Not many people are familiar with his name but this lad had a terrific domestic season building up to the PSL and can hit the ball long. Watch out for him a breakthrough PSL might be on the cards for him. He scored 36 runs off 21 balls in the last match.
  • The onus will be on Sohail Tanvir & Carlos Braithwaite to step up with the ball.

Key Stats and Facts

  • Multan Sultans are on a 5 match losing streak (Two losses in this season and lost their last three matches in PSL 2020 as well)
  • Qalandars have 4 wins in 7 matches against Sultans.
  • Rizwan is the leading run-scorer of this year’s PSL with 112 runs. Hafeez & Vince are not far behind with 106 & 100 runs respectively.
  • All 6 matches have been won by the chasing side in PSL 2021.

Possible Playing 11

Qalandars can bring in Maaz Khan for Rashid Khan.

Lahore Qalandars: 1. Fakhar Zaman, 2. Sohail Akhtar (c), 3. Mohammad Hafeez, 4. Agha Salman, 5. Ben Dunk, 6. Samit Patel, 7. David Wiese, 8. Ahmed Daniyal, 9. Shaheen Afridi, 10. Haris Rauf, 11. Maaz Khan

Imran Tahir/Sohail Khan could come in for Shahid Afridi.

Multan Sultans: 1. Mohammad Rizwan (c & wk), 2. Chris Lynn, 3. James Vince, 4. Rilee Rossouw, 5. Sohaib Maqsood, 6. Khushdil Shah, 7. Carlos Brathwaite, 8. Shahid Afridi/Sohail Khan, 9. Usman Qadir, 10 . Sohail Tanvir, 11. Shahnawaz Dhani

National Stadium Karachi Pitch Report and Weather

The last two matches have reminded everyone that Karachi is an excellent batting wicket. Chasing seems to be the way forward for the teams. Depending on the number of pitches curators have in store as the tournament progresses spinners’ role will become important.

There are no chances of rain with the temperature around 24 degrees. The humidity will mostly be in the 20s.

Twitter reactions to Joe Root’s amazing figures of 5/8

Twitter reactions to Joe Root’s amazing figures of 5/8 | Twitter reacts to Joe Root taking an incredible 5/8 on the 2nd day of the 3rd Test vs India

When they say cricket can be a funny game, this is what they mean.

As India sat well-placed at 99/3 overnight, trailing England’s paultry 112 by just 13 runs, one couldn’t help but think that England misread the pitch and played three seamers due to the pink ball.

Enter Joe Root.

The England skipper, who is enjoying an amazing year with the bat, made a huge impact with the ball. Never before had he taken a five-for in First Class cricket, so even two or three here from him would have been a huge bonus.

After he dismissed Pant with his very first delivery, Root went on a rampage, bowling with excellent control on a turning surface. Fans picked up on this, as the skipper brought England roaring back into not only this Test, but World Test Championship contention.

Here are the Twitter reactions from Root’s incredible 5/8 off 6.2 overs.

India’s lead of 33 could prove to be vital on a difficult surface. However, Joe Root’s brilliant performance has given England a real chance of taking a 2-1 series lead, which puts them on the brink of the World Test Championship Final.

CSK IPL 2021 Auction Analysis: How did they perform?

CSK IPL 2021 Auction Analysis: How did they perform? | A look at Chennai Super Kings’ performance at the IPL 2021 Auction

This article is part of an Auction Analysis series, where we look at each team. Check out the analysis of:

Retained players: MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, KM Asif, Deepak Chahar, Dwayne Bravo, Faf du Plessis, Imran Tahir, N Jagadeesan, Karn Sharma, Lungi Ngidi, Mitchell Santner, Ravindra Jadeja, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shardul Thakur, Sam Curran, Josh Hazlewood, R Sai Kishore

Players bought: K Gowtham (INR 9.25 crore), Moeen Ali (INR 7 crore), Cheteshwar Pujara (INR 50 lakh), K Bhagath Varma (INR 20 lakh), C Hari Nishaanth (INR 20 lakh), M Harisankar Reddy (INR 20 lakh)

Purse remaining: INR 2.55 crore

Best Probable XI: Faf Du Plessis, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Suresh Raina, Moeen Ali, MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo, Sam Curran, K Gowtham, Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar

Alternate XI: Moeen Ali, Faf Du Plessis, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo, K Gowtham, Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar, Imran Tahir

The Chennai Super Kings fared well in their hometown as they picked their main targets. The 3-time champions indulged in a bidding war with the Royal Challengers Bangalore for Glenn Maxwell but couldn’t get their hands on the Australian all-rounder.

Instead, they picked Moeen Ali and the Englishman was available at a cheaper price of 7 crores. The all-rounder fits CSK’s requirements as the franchise needed a southpaw as well as an off-spinning bowling all-rounder.

The MS Dhoni-led franchise bought Krishnappa Gowtham for a whopping sum of 9.25 crores and in the process the Karnataka off-spinner became the costliest uncapped player in the history of the IPL auction. The franchise needed a mainstream off-spinner as Harbhajan Singh was released by the franchise. Lack of off-spin options hurt the franchise in the IPL 2020 as they lacked variety in their spin-bowling attack.

CSK IPL 2021 Auction Analysis: Gowtham was bagged for a big fee.

Cheteshwar Pujara’s buy might have got the yellow franchise an applause in the auction room but the buy was puzzling given that the Test specialist last played the lucrative tourney in 2014 and scores at under a run-a-ball in the format. It might be interesting to see what CSK plans for the experienced batsman as Ruturaj Gaikwad or N Jagadeeshan can play the anchor role in a better way for the franchise.

K Bhagath Varma, C Hari Nishaanth and M Harisankar Reddy were the 3 uncapped players bagged by the franchise for their base price towards the end of the event.

IPL 2021 Prediction

CSK’s plans were all over the place as the tournament shifted to UAE and majority of their players were better suited to the track in Chepauk. This year, irrespective of the venue, CSK will be expected to fare well as they have a long batting line-up and have the majority of their bases covered. A playoff spot will be a certainty for the franchise.

KKR IPL 2021 Auction Analysis: How did they perform?

KKR IPL 2021 Auction Analysis: How did they perform? | A look at how the Kolkata Knight Riders performed in the IPL 2021 Auction

This article is part of an Auction Analysis series, where we look at each team. Check out the analysis of:

Retained players: Eoin Morgan, Andre Russell, Dinesh Karthik, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Kuldeep Yadav, Lockie Ferguson, Nitish Rana, Prasidh Krishna, Rinku Singh, Sandeep Warrier, Shivam Mavi, Shubman Gill, Sunil Narine, Pat Cummins, Rahul Tripathi, Varun Chakravarthy, Tim Seifert

Players bought: Shakib Al Hasan (INR 3.2 crore), Harbhajan Singh (INR 2 crore), Ben Cutting (INR 75 lakh), Karun Nair (INR 50 lakh), Pawan Negi (INR 50 lakh), Sheldon Jackson (INR 20 lakh), Venkatesh Iyer (INR 20 lakh), Vaibhav Arora (INR 20 lakh)

Purse remaining: INR 3.20 crore

Best Probable XI: Shubman Gill, Rahul Tripathi, Nitish Rana, Eoin Morgan, Dinesh karthik, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Lockie Ferguson/Pat Cummins, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Shivam Mavi, Varun Chakravarthy

Alternate XI: Shubman Gill, Rahul Tripathi, Shakib Al Hasan, Eoin Morgan, Dinesh karthik, Andre Russell, Kuldeep Yadav/Harbhajan Singh, Lockie Ferguson/Pat Cummins, Shivam Mavi, Prasidh Krishna/Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Varun Chakravarthy

The Kolkata Knight Riders were one of the most impressive teams on the auction table. The team had to buy backups for the opening slot, spin-bowling all-rounder, pace-bowling all-rounder and an Indian wicket-keeper batsman. They strengthened the bench strength after picking players for 3 out of the 4 categories.

The franchise opted not to buy an opening batsman and in all likelihood, they will trust the Indian options in their squad. The Eoin Morgan-led side roped in Shakib Al Hasan after a brief bidding war with the Punjab Kings.

KKR IPL 2021 Auction Analysis: How did they perform? | A look at how the Kolkata Knight Riders performed in the IPL 2021 Auction
KKR IPL 2021 Auction Analysis: How did they perform? – Shakib is back at KKR.

They got their hands on Ben Cutting who will be on the bench but might come in, if the injury-prone Andre Russell is unavailable. Towards the end, experienced Indian internationals Harbhajan Singh and Karun Nair were bagged by the franchise as well for their base prices.

Venkatesh Iyer and Vaibhav Arora were the uncapped picks of the franchise while Sheldon Jackson will be the backup for Dinesh Karthik as he was the only keeper in the team prior to the auction.

The 2-time champions will stick to their playing XI from last season but in case of injuries and unavailabilities, they have their options sorted out. KKR didn’t quite optimise their resources in the previous season and if they give an opportunity to the players, they will be a fine team.

IPL 2021 Prediction

They have filled the backups as well which is crucial in a long tournament like the IPL. Unlike the last season, if KKR gives a long run to players at a specific position, reaching the playoffs is a realistic task for the franchise. However, in a competitive tournament, KKR must avoid a poor run of form that has hampered their past two campaigns.
